Gatineau in Oxford

For my daughters 40th birthday party I ordered three cakes from Gatineau in Summertown… Chocolate Framboise, Larieux, and Tarte aux Fraises. They were delivered the following morning well in time for the party, and looked absolutely amazing! “But how did they taste?”, I hear you ask! Well, I have never seen cakes disappear so quickly, with plates and forks licked clean! They were superbly delicious! Well done Gatineau, and thanks from a very pleased dad. Xx

Best pastries in North Oxford. Ordered a savoury and sweet pastry - faultless. Coffee wasn't great though and hopefully that will improve (server argued with me about that they thought a flat -white coffee was and how everyone else in Oxford was doing it wrong).

I went twice for coffee and cakes. The French breads and cakes and chocolates looked amazing but the coffee was not up to the same standard. I had an abricotine(?) which was fabulous - very crunchy pastry with soft gooey apricots inside. The other cake was disappointing - I think it was a rum baba but it did not taste remotely alcoholic and was very small and bland. The coffee was in a very small cup and was pretty tasteless. It was made by a young man who was having trouble working the machine - maybe he was new. They said they were a bakery not a coffee shop and it showed - but perhaps they should look into improving the coffee side of their offering to match the great bakery selection.

Had a lovely breakfast- not too expensive- with patisserie as good as we’ve had in France! Nice cups of coffee and tea and a pleasant space to sit outside that’s dog friendly!

Why save up for a mortgage when you use your life savings to buy the best pastries in oxford instead! LOL JK its delicious but over priced...

The coffee was average, decent French like cakes, slightly overpriced. Visited twice so far, suburban location.

Lovely bread, cakes, pastries. Love the quiche and a good cup of coffee. All looks wonderful as soon as you walk in. Very friendly staff and very welcoming.

Several neighbours and I have enjoyed the delicious treats from Gatineau now and again during the pandemic. We all particularly love the Viennoiserie. This morning’s batch were as delicious as ever and we all get a lift from a bit of luxurious French baking. Thank you so much.

Consistently fanatastic bread and viennoiserie. Everything is delicious, our favourites are the traditional bageutte, vanilla brioche and almond croissants. The homemade jams are exceptional -we recently had cherry and it was the best we have tasted by a long margin. Service is always impeccable and friendly Thank you to the staff, it has been really appreciated that you have been open through the months of restrictions.

Simply the best for French breakfast in Oxford. Tha almond pain au chocolate is a favourite of mine.

We had our fourth visit to Gatineau this morning, & wished we had heard of this place sooner. The staff are super warm and friendly, and have made us feel so welcome every time we come. We have sampled many of the Viennoiserie (croissants, pain au chocolat & raspberry creation) for breakfast and they were gold standard. The patisserie were so beautiful to look at, and even more beautiful to eat. You can taste the quality of the ingredients that they are made with, we can’t wait to try even more. The sandwiches were delicious, thick crunchy bread, enveloping salty salami and sour cornichons, transporting me back to France. They have little bags of treats like madeleines, langue du chats, and florentines that our friends have been very grateful to receive. We couldn’t recommend this place enough! Although this place is 50 mins drive from our house, we keep finding excuses to return! Don’t leave it as long as we did to visit! Tres Bien!

We got the most amazing cakes from here..they are a real treat:) We also loved their bread - it tastes so good fresh, and is also excellent toasted the next day. Loved it!

We've always had lovely fresh bread and tried a number of different cakes which never fail to be both eye catching and delicious. We also love the macarons in all their different flavours and jewelled colours and the quiches.

Almond Croissant and plain croissant to die for. Campaillou, Sourdough and ciabattas bread - yum yum. Quiche - oui oui In short this is a great and personal gastro delight. We travel 10 miles for these on a Saturday morning. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed. An Oxford French gem.

Gatneau es mi lugar para ir cuando quiero darme un capricho y para comprar pan. El Compaillou es delicioso, al igual que los brioches azucarados. Even though we have moved to East Oxford we regularly make the trek over the bridge to get the best French bread and patisserie in town.

I haven't eaten here but I have frequently bought the produce - the quiches, croissants and macarons are all great but the bread is fabulous.

A real find. The only place in Oxford we've found for proper French patisserie, made on the premises - and wholly delicious. Pleasant surroundings too. Yiou can sit outside and watch the world go by while drinking your coffee. An excellent range of bread too.

Tuve el Biskelia, el Cheesecake de grosella negra y la Tarte au Citron. ¡Me apresuro a agregar que los compartí con alguien más! La Biskelia estaba deliciosa, pero podría haberlo hecho con un poco más de sal. Me encantó el Cheesecake de grosella negra, aunque personalmente me hubiera gustado un poco más de acidez. La señora a quien compré los pasteles no me entendió cuando le pregunté si la Tarte au Citron era esencialmente un pastel de merengue de limón, parecía pensar que no lo era; Le pregunté si era merengue en la parte superior y ella dijo que no lo era, pero que era una crema. Así que cuando lo mordí y encontré que era un merengue suave, supongo que me decepcionó un poco que fuera más familiar de lo que esperaba, aunque ciertamente no me decepcionó la calidad, que fue excelente.

As a French person myself, I can say this is one of the best places for bread, cakes, viennoiseries and patisseries. But it's a shame it is so overpriced.

I love the pastries and baguettes at Gatineau, their pain au chocolate is divine and their baguettes are by far the best in Oxford, but why oh why can't I ever get a decent coffee here? I've had coffee made by four or five different members of staff over the last year and not one can make a flat white that doesn't taste watery, bitter or, on being asked for a stronger/less milky coffee, one so excessively strong that it's undrinkable. Gatineau now uses coffee beans from Missing Bean and so I thought 'perfect, my favourite coffee combined with my favourite patisserie' but they don't know how to make it. Please employ an experienced barista, buy some modern coffee cups and customers will appreciate a 10/10 experience on both fronts.

I love this place, I though I did not like macaroons until I tried theirs. Now I love them :) Amazing bread as well.

I recently hosted a charity event and Gatineau kindly donated a stunning and delicious Larieux cake which truly wowed my guests! I am touched by their professionalism, excellent products and generosity. I had also purchased my 4 year old's birthday cake from them a few months ago and that was delicious as well. I highly recommend!

Gatineau made a beautiful chocolate tower for my daughters 21st. She didn’t want a cake and this was fun beautiful and her friends had not seen one before. Delivered to the hotel and Gatineau could not have been more friendly or helpful - thank you!

It's busy because it's good and the goodies are worth queuing for. Primarily food to go but if you're lucky on a nice day you might be able to sit at one of the tables outside on the pavement and watch the world go by.

My daughter and I had a delicious quiche followed by our selection from the array of French patisserie. A really good Tarte au Citron and unusually flavoured macaroons, were what we chose and they were extremely good. We took away an apple and cinnamon pastry for our breakfast and their bread and chocolates looked amazing too.

Gatineau is the best patisserie in Oxford, it offers high quality cakes and biscuits. Unfortunately there are just few seats but it's worth a visit anyway!

Oxford is lucky to have chef-owner Herve Gatineau and his patisserie in the Summertown suburb, just north of Oxford Center. I love his individual vegetarian quiches: zuccini & goat cheese, spinach walnut & stilton, cherry tomato & cheddar. Superb quality. Take away 2 quiches from Gatineau, a bag of organic baby leaf rocket salad from M&S; across Banbury Rd, with Waitrose spiced & herby yogurt & green harissa dressing, and you have a great meal. Reserve your quiches if afternoon visit. Closed on Mondays. Gatineau is a wonderful half-hour walk from Oxford Center along the Oxford Canal which is peaceful and green, exit the canal at Elizabeth Jennings Way bridge which is labeled, and follow it east to Banbury Road. Enjoy. I love Oxford.

Nothing beats the cakes here, a real slice of France in north Oxford. Have only ever taken away a box of cakes but have never been disappointed. They almost always have a gluten free choice too, which is amazing.

I ordered Petits Fours to take to the office for my birthday. They are a smaller version of the larger cakes, but I prefer them that way. Absolutely wonderful, and some of the best cakes I have ever had. Everybody in the office was extremely impressed. They certainly made my day. I will go back to try other things.

Gatineau is a must visit and a crucial part of everyday life in Oxford. I bought the most fantastic Viennoiserie I have ever tasted along with an incredible selection of breads. Needless to say my wife and children were very happy on Sunday morning and they haven't stopped talking about the dark and white chocolate baguette which was so different and a real treat.Loved watching the bakers and pastry chefs making everything in the back of the shop.Amazing, thank you!

Gatineau was extremely accommodating to prepare a tray of brownies, shortbread biscuits and macaroons for our daughters surprise birthday. Manager Debora was so helpful both with guidance on what to order, as well as quick responses to my many questions. The treats were delicious and enjoyed by all! I highly recommend this wonderful bakery.

This boulangerie is superb - offering a range of different quality bread and wonderful cakes and pastries + great coffee ( small area with high stools or a few tables outside) Their seeded sour dough and baguettes are my favourites although they produce a heavenly range of croissants and chocolates too.You can see the bakers and pastry makers hard at work in the kitchen whilst the mainly French staff are pleasant and welcomingNot open Mondays but in true French tradition you can pop in for a coffee and croissant at 7.30 onwards. Their breads and pastries are of the highest quality. The best I can find in Oxford. The whole grain baguettes are outstanding. Great brioche. Everything I have tried has been good. Excellent service too.

And yes, I've tried all the others (Natural Bread Company, Gail's, etc). Cakes are lovely, too, of course.

Very French, friendly patesserie and small coffee shop. The breads, breakfast pastries, gateaux and French chocolates are of high quality, including traditional and innovative recipes. Busy and popular with locals and those who come to seek out Gatineau's specialities like a Gallette des Rois.

Excellent baguettes , & millefeuiles , cakes and tartes well well presented, as were gateau., large selection.

Amazing place to have a delicious pastry with your coffee . There is a huge variety of pastries , croissants , cakes ,pies and bread you want to try everything in this shop ! The stuff is really friendly and helpful. Probably is the only decent place in Oxford that you could have REAL pastry and not some cake or sponge ! Definitely, you need to try the huge selection of these pastries .Well done to the chef !

We come from Canada every other year to visit our daughter and her family. We look forward to having coffee and a French pastry at Gatineau Patisserie. The pastries here are the very best in all of Oxford. In our two week visit we visited Gatineau Patisserie eight times and look forward to visiting them again in 2018!

Love this place as to be the only place you can get a great coffee from and the cakes look nice. Staff are friendly and helpful if your passing get in there.

They speak French here and you can see all the patisseries and bread being prepared in front of you. Indeed some customers had their gateaux made whilst they were waiting. The pastries are some of the best I have tasted (here or in France) and are substantial, unusual and look fantastic on display. You can have coffee and also sit outside watching the traffic of the Banbury Road.

We visited Gatineau Patisserie in Oxford at lunch time today. We had delicious savory tarts (onion and cheese, tomato and goats cheese) espresso coffees and an apricot slice. All absolutely great. We were so impressed that we also bought an apricot jam and a bottle of Orange Douce a la Fleur d'oranger Go and have a look and try. Very friendly staff too.

I'm an Oxford local and have been coming for years- mainly on a Saturday morning!All the food is prepared freshly on site, and carries a certain joie de vivre- I highly recommend the apricot tart, brioche and macaroons!A bit of a local secret, this north Oxford cafe is staffed by friendly professionals and the owner is extremely knowledgeable and always happy to help. I've taken friends in need of comfort for home made (real!) hot chocolate, bought cake for family occasions, bought macaroons as hifts for visiting colleagues and rushed in for coffee to go over the years and have been pleased to support such a great local business.Highly recommended! Amazing bakery which is a bit expensive but worth every penny for the quality. The pastries are delicious and the bread, especially the sour dough is absolutely fantastic. I haven't tried the cakes but they look amazing too. During good weather you can sit outside and enjoy a coffee.

--The bread.Well if I were thin I would buy it every day.The baguette both white and rustic and poppy seed is just wonderful and when you toast it the next day it's even more moreish.The campaillou seems to be a bit famous locally it seems to sell out quickly.As I said I can't say for certain that any other croissant in France is any better.It is like glass in your mouth exploding into thousands of heavenly shards.If I were thin I would ask for a job so that I could eat all the leftovers.....

This patisserie does the most wonderful cakes. They are a bit expensive, but well worth it's! I recommend the gateau basque!

You can't find better than this, their cakes and products don't belong to this world, they are heavenly exquisite, thank God we have it in Oxford, their staff are very welcoming and kind I don't understand other comments, a place where they serve you smiling and happy to see you again. My family loves everything they have!!!.

I used to come here often when I lived in the area so I thought I'd visit again and bring some friends along. Customer service is lacking. Seems like they just want to get rid of us. Very dissapointing.

I was recommended this by the person who we rent from.(Airbnb) The shop owner is very friendly and the staff are very helpfully as well.The food that they make, is out of this world. Its was real nice that something excited my taste buds. For a change, when it comes to bakery food. And had surprise birthday cake done there as well, for my wife. Once again it was top class taste and presentation. Every time I think of Oxford, I think of this little special bakery.

Nice food which is why I return but virtually every time I have I wonder why I do because the staff are not welcoming bordering on rude!I keep thinking maybe its a one off but seems to be the same 90% of the times that I've been in there. Seems to me that staff need to work on their customer service skills on all customers not just regulars.

This is a patisserie in the French tradition. There is a sidewalk cafe outside too, though I have not used this. The artisan bread is what I go there for mainly, particularly their campaillou countryside bread, made with a mixture of white and wholemeal flour. It is airy and tasty, with a good crust, an excellent complement to a sharp cheddar. Well worth cycling quite a few miles for, even in the rain.

Very nice cakes and fair enough bread (but a limited range) and all quite expensive - worst thing is the ridiculous set-up where you queue behind people wanting the full café service while all you want is a loaf. It seems generally on a Saturday morning to be full of bien pensant punters who imagine they are doing something rather St-Germain-de-Pres when in fact it's just a Summertown shop. They work hard but need to think about segregating different kinds of customers and having more than one till.

I had several items here and it's one of the best sweet spots I've ever visited. The cheesecake was the best I've ever had. Ever. Other pastries were great and the chocolate - superb. The staff is friendly and willing to help you pick out something when you have a tough time with all the great choices. I wish I could have brought some of them home with me but they never made it to the airport! :)

never imagined i would find another great patisserie place after my favourite one Sweet Spot in Sydney.this is a remarkable place where the artisan Herve works with love and dedication and turns out each piece more delicious than the other.it was a pleasure to meet another humble person.

I have been on a few occasions - either to pick up pastries to take home - or to sit on the chairs outside for a la carte coffees! The pastries are top notch!

Amazing pastries, baguettes, macarons and Other goodies. There is often a queues for the *to die for* sourdough loaf (Campaillou) at the weekends.

I am a pain au chocolat addict and this is the only place I will buy them. Everything here is excellent and delicious. I've been getting my fix here for years and continue to make a detour to this side of town. Once you've eaten here you realise that all the other pastries sold in coffee shops don't taste anything like they're supposed to!

I love traditional patisserie fare, and this is what this shop provides. My recommendation: a strawberry tart (or two), perfect in summer. The strawberries are super fresh and glazed and the custardy crème pat under the strawberries is delish...

Stands head and shoulders above other Patisseries. Utterly delicious creations at very reasonable prices. Cheaper to have a really good coffee and wonderful hand-made pastry at Gatineau than at chain coffee shop across the road! A real treasure.

What a wonderful patisserie to stumble upon right in the middle of Summertown. I had a very tasty spinach and walnut quiche plus a bag of the most delicious langue de chats which of course, were polished off almost immediately! Everything is immaculately displayed and packed and a steady stream of visitors attests to Gatineau's popularity. It was nice to see the two patissiere's in the kitchen at the back of the shop and would be nicer still to see the French girl at the counter serve up a smile or two!

Gatineau is the only place in Oxford that comes close to the ideal of a Parisian boulangerie/patisserie. Yes, it's more expensive than Tesco (though not more expensive than the Parisian equivalent - I've just done the comparison) but this is real food! Their campaillou is my favourite bread of all time. It's often still warm, and sold by weight. The cakes are works of art, and a regular feature of our special occasions. We're so lucky to have a place this good in Oxford!
