Gateway Of India in Cardiff

Disgusting curry January 2025 Probably the worst curry we have ever had. We pre ordered our meal so no rush on NYE. Ordered an aloo gobi which was unbelievably bad.,it consisted of 3 tiny new pots not even skinned ( how lazy is that) and 2 florets of limp cauli with no sauce on them. Chicken madras was in a yellow sauce and no spice. Chicken tikka masala had no char to the chicken as it was just added to the bland sauce. Chicken rogan rosh had no tomatoes in there only what I can describe looked like a tomato was peeled with a peeler and placed on top. Bland and yellow. The tarka dahl. Was good. On opening the allo gobi I immediately phoned them to complain the lady who works there disagreed with me and put the owner on. I was told to return for it to be sorted. I wish I had also phoned about the curries. I returned this morning had my money back for the aloo gobi. Would not return please people save your money. Our son brought us a lamb pathia from spice delight in penarth omg it was delicious. I have attached photos. One is of the rice in the bin. Cheap and nasty. The last pic is of our gorgeous lamb pathia.

Odd experience in store, expensive food and totally tasteless - probably the worst curry we have ever had. Judging by the5 star reviews can only believe we were unlucky but honestly can’t understand how this place is even in business let alone getting such good reviews. It took them 10 inexplicable minutes just to put our curries in a bag. Once home and reheated they were disgusting. Most went in the bin. Tesco ready meals have more flavour and a fraction of the price. Baffled. Utterly baffled by the popularity.

Shocking! Ordered from uber eats and the only indication of the food being chilled was tiny writing saying ‘heat and eat’ under the title banner. Heat can be interpreted as spice when ordering a take away and there’s nothing else to indicate you have to heat the food yourself. I would also argue that the food is overpriced, poor standard, and way too much heat/spice with very little flavour. The bread I had to go with the prawn puri and the samosa’s were rock solid and I’m not sure the heat guidelines are correct meaning once you’ve heated it according to their guidelines and may not be satisfied with temperature of food.. you’re then in the realms of further poor food quality and safety. I wasted £35 for all of mine to go in the bin. They should make it bold and clear to customers on any site they use to sell their products that it is served cold and must be heated by the customer!!

Very good. Food is packaged easy for heating. It's is prepared by chefs that know the food. Very friendly service.

Great concept but all dishes are quite spicy - even those dishes that shouldn’t be such as yoghurt dip.

Disappointed to learn that this restaurant serves halal meat only. I personally avoid halal meat. To have 'india' in its shop front name is a crude way of fooling ppl to think that this is authentic indian cuisine. Authentic Indian avoids serving halal meat. Always ask b4 you book.

First time visiting the Gateway of India Rhiwbina location. My partner and I made a mistake and ordered pick up from Penarth. The gentleman at the front was able to help us out super quickly. He made a call to the partner restaurant and sorted out our problem. He then persisted to get or food prepared. Once we walked home we noticed he had gifted us free samosas and pakoras. Left as very happy customers of this place, food was excellent and we will be returning. Thank you!!

First time trying, lovely welcome in the shop. The lady who served us was very helpful and polite. The food was outstanding and you can tell they use quality ingredients! Will definitely be coming back.

My husband and I had been meaning to try Gateway to India for years and finally got around to it. The door to the store was open so we walked in. The person who worked in the store advised that they didn’t open until 5 (it was 3pm) but he was more than happy to serve us! We picked our meals which were all clearly labelled with prices, ingredients etc and went to the till to pay. The server asked if we could wait 5 minutes, which we did but unsure why! After 5 minutes. The gentleman brought us out FREE bags of vegetable samosas and chicken pakora - fresh! He stated he’s gifting them to us as it’s our first time coming to Gateway of India and he was certain that it would become our regular takeaway - he was right! Although a little pricey for our normal takeaway, it was definitely worth the price and he will definitely be returning! The flavours were stunning, the meat was perfect and the portions were huge. It didn’t taste oily or greasy like some takeaways can! Service was excellent and the cooking instructions easy to follow! Super impressed!

Great selection of meals, extras and service. All the dishes we had were really nice plenty of meat and loads of flavour will definitely be back.

Beautiful food The curry’s were outstanding. But my naan bread was like a supermarket naan cut in half very dry and tasteless. Not what I expected from an outstanding takeout .

£12 for a main, without rice or bread that you have to cook yourself. I just don't get it. I spent £40 on naans, two mains, some rice (cauliflower and pilau). The shop is lovely, the staff similar, the packaging great but the food isn't anything special and massively overpriced. It's not often I stop eating out of choice and just didn't want to eat this food. Great for my waist, not great for my wallet. The rice and bread are just horrible. The mains had good amount of meat, but the sauces were boring. I love Indian food, but this is just over priced for what it is. I'd rather save money and have a supermarket cook your self (which whilst not containing as much meat, has far better naan and rice) and if willing to shell out £40 (20pp) why wouldn't I order a takeaway which is bar far the nicest option and its delivered to my door. Overpriced, overhyped. I shall not be returning.

Just had our 1st takeaway experience at Penarth Gateway of India. A lamb dish and a chicken biryani. Lots of big pieces of chicken and lamb, tasty meals and very filling. Could have shared either meal, will know next time. Will definitely be paying more visits. It was from their chilled section and it was like homemade curries. 👍👍

Best indian takeaway ok so you choose what you want and it comes to you cold. You have to either microwave or oven cook it at home. Think this is better as you there is nothing worse than lukewarm food plus buy it and eat it later on if you come home late from a night out and get a bit peckish. Food is really nice prepared in store and the staff are great as well. You might have to wait at peak times but its reasonable price I'm a regular.

Interesting concept , but ultimately feel its more clever marketing than anything Firstly the food is as expensive as if you were order it cooked from a top notch takeaway Considering you have to cook this yourself i'm not really seeing where the value for money lays The quality was good but again not any better than my usual takeaway I probably wouldn't rush back primary because of how expensive it is and the element of cooking it yourself isn't really a selling point for me

Amazing choice, reasonably priced, staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful. The premises is clean. I cannot fault Gateway Of India and certainly recommend them

Really nice lamb in the lamb pasanda, nice chicken pasanda. Naan bread nice, rice nice. Didn't get any little extras like we usually do which was disappointing - no little pakoras or samoas. Delivery guy had a poor sense of direction...

Sadly the worst chicken tikka ever. It was as hot as madras and could not eat. Their attitude was oh well we think it’s not hot. Awful

Good quality food. Very unclear that it requires heating and everything arrives cold. Expensive considering you have to cook it yourself. Probably won't order again as we'd like a takeaway to arrive ready to eat.

Literally the worst and unhygienic Indian ( bangali ) food. Firstly the staff was extremely rude saying where did we come from and that, when we replied they made weird faces which we took extreme offence. When we asked the same question the manager replied Bangladeshi. Basically clickbating irl. And lastly dog water food ngl. Don’t go there save your taste buds!!!!!! 😢🤝

What can I say I was slightly apprehensive with ordering from this takeaway after a recommendation from a friend as the food is served chilled but my fears where totally unfounded this is honestly one of the best Indian restaurants in Cardiff maybe Wales and I have had a fair few of them!! This is a must try Indian restaurant!!! and there is so much more on offer than just your usual bog standard Indian takeaway you name it they have it your missing out if you have not tried there delicious food!!

Really great Indian takeaway, great quality food accompanied with great customer service. They sell local spice kits, honey, chutneys and pickled vegetables which is a lovely addition. This is a cold takeaway place so bare in mind that you have to factor in some heating time, but this can be done through microwave or oven.

We bought a selection of meals for 8 people. Really delicious food. Excellent quality. We were give a complementary plate of mini samosas and pakoras. Cardboard containers are great being biodegradable been but do start to tear after being in oven if you are keeping them warm for longer than 30mins

We ordered 2 Chicken Mekhani but what arrived neither looked or tasted like mekhani, it was closer in both to a korma with far too much cinnamon in it. We also ordered peshwari nann which was very floury. It was edible, but just not what we had ordered.

This is the nicest Indian food we have ever had. Me and my parents return frequently as the food is amazing and the staff are delightful. They are so happy to help and offer so many alternative food options for vegan or vegetarian.

The Gateway of India was recommended by a friend. Just had my first meal and it was delicious. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the fridges are well stocked with plenty of choice. I'll definitely be back.

Fantastic food and service. Obviously busy Saturday night, and so would rather be told a longer delivery time from the outset. Food was absolutely outstanding. Definitely order again.

I feel bad leaving this review as the driver seemed nice and the food was well packaged. But, it is delivered cold and you need to heat it yourself. It’s not that clear and easily missed, I feel it should be highlighted. I am in a hotel and have no means of heating, so £20 went in the bin and I had to buy something else.

The food from this establishment is first class so didn’t mind it arriving a little late 😊

Be aware that you have to cook these meals yourself! Was very surprised when the 'takeaway' came stone cold in cartons. You then heat it up at home. Personally i didn't find the time involved heating these dishes up and the extra washing up involved to be very convenient. Defeats the purpose of a takeaway. Food when we cooked it was OK but the curries and rice were too spicy, and i love spice! Wouldn't order from here again!

Absolutely fabulous. Just can't believe it has taken me over three years of living in Rhiwbina to try it. The two guys who were working in there are two of the nicest guys you could wish to meet. The food itself is absolutely stunning. Full of flavour and packed with spice, not blow your head off spice but really flavoursome spice. Will certainly be back.

Absolutely brilliant food that covers all dietary requirements with a fantastic range of menu options - it's far and away the best Indian I've tried in Cardiff. Both delivery and collection services are fantastic, with great online ordering functionality too. The 'get now - cook later' concept is a real winning formula - and with such friendly and accommodating service from all of the staff there as well, you can't go wrong! I would 100% recommend!

Great food, staff willing to make up a curry to your choice of not in one of the fridges.

So I was aware after ordering that food is cooked, presented in takeaway containers, blast chilled and stored. These are then assorted according to order and sold. So my expectation wasn’t great however! Blow my socks off!. They delivered on all areas. The concept is weird but it works. You simple put the perfectly microwave safe containers in and the food is presented in the containers really well. I was impressed by the quality and amount of food that came. The curries ain’t for desi pallets as subtle in kick but heavy on variety of flavours in your mouth. I would order from here again and can see why this has been a long running family business.

Food was delivered promptly and by a very well presented, professional, friendly gentleman. Food was as always, delicious! Big portions and loved the added extras thrown in, we have enough for lunch tomorrow too. One of the best takeaways in Cardiff.

Food 25 mins late and completely cold. But the delivery guys was friendly, there was extra samosas and pakora. Tasty food once we had heated it up.

The food was fantastic. The instructions for heating the food were straightforward and we even got some bonus nibbles. All the food was great and portions were a good size too.

By far the best Indian cuisine I’ve ever had. Absolutely faultless and beautifully cooked with complete authenticity and lovely fresh ingredients. Looking forward to my next meal already!

We missed the fact the food is served cold, which admittedly is on us, however at almost £9 a main dish it wouldn’t have even crossed my mind. Cooking food then chilling it to be re-heated is not “fresh” food. When we went to collect it it took best part of 10 minutes for them to get the food together, which was ridiculous considering they were taking cold pots out of a fridge. Also didn’t think that the food itself was very nice, have genuinely had nicer microwave curries. Really fed up to have wasted a chunk of cash on such a disappointing meal, and definitely won’t be going there again!

This food doesn't taste like Indian food!!! and the food have been delivered cold! A waste of money!!!
