Gaskells Fish And Chips in Wigan

When the shop was first taken over we noticed a difference in the fish and it wasn’t as good as the old Gaskells. However we have been twice since and they have been great, back to normal and the chips are delicious. Give it another try instead of leaving a bad review, they were just getting going.

Horrible,chips awfull, peas plonked on top like slop, no taste in fish steak pudding dry, waste of £16. ended up in the bin.

Worst fish I've had if ya gonna leave fish frying longer be better if there was fish in it all batter won't be rushing back to soon.

Wrong order given! Spent over £20 for 1 fish (ordered 2) chips, gravy and peas. I rang to complain but I couldn’t understand the person shouting at the other end of the phone. We won’t be going there again.

Went last week bought fish chips and curry x 2 and had to thrown it all away I don’t know who has taken over but gone down hill also change your oil as your batter on your fish was black

Used to be a fab chippy but the standard has definitely slipped. It isn't as tasty as used to be. Can't quite put my finger on the issue but the chips tasted different( not nice) and the gravy was lacking flavour. My son even comment its a good job Grandad isn't here anymore he usednt9 love this chippy he wouldn't now.

The chippy was freezing cold saying they had to leave door open due to condensation, staff where perished through.peas were horrid undercooked and a vile false colour, fish was fresh cooked to order but sadly overcooked will not be returning

Just called at this chippy and it's awful really expensive gravy all full of lumps chips taste like they have been there for days will not be going again I am not surprised there was not 1 person in the place this used to be 1 of the best in wigan how things have changed for the worse

The worst chips I have ever had and this is not the first time, chips were chewy either been stood a while or warmed up. Had to throw them away. Will definitely not be going again.

Very disappointing. My Large portion of chips not as big as the normal Portion the guy next to me was given. Served by a very surly young lad, dark hair & tee shirt. Will think twice about going again as it’s pricey for what you get.

i have been here many times and i rated it at the top of the tree but today it failed. The fish was beautiful and couldnt be bettered but the chips were dried up and had been waiting to be used for some time, and i left more than half of them. a very disappointed me and a high price of over £8 didnt help.

I had to put the fish and chips in the bin inedible also I asked for large chips the young man the served me didn't give me much of a portion but it didn't matter in the end .I won't go back

Been to the chip shop on many occasions. Don't know why!!!!. Chips were like drinking a bottle of cooking oil really underdone.Took my meal back on most occasions. Only went there because I work full time. Very expensive. Cheaper going Miller and Carter Don't go there. Don't want to even give it 1 star!!!

Sorry despite the quality being fine the basic price was poor £3.05 for a large bag of chips. Wasn’t even a large portion to be honest. £2 for twice as much and same quality 2 miles away in Billinge. Taking advantage of the current climate I think. Disappointing.

Wait wasn’t too bad, only came here because every other chippy in Billinge and Orrell was closed. Won’t visit again as I prefer other places. Food was nice but nothing special. Thought it was rather expensive compared to other local places. Staff were helpful and friendly.

After being recommended by the in laws we weren’t disappointed. Me and the Mrs were treated to two portions of fish chips & peas. Though a touch expensive (but then what isn’t these days) the food was brilliant. Freshly cooked to order fish, the chips were spot on and the peas were just how they should be nice and mushy. The staff were very pleasant and chatty I may add. We know where we’re going on our next trip up north. Keep it up Gaskells 👏

Just been to Gaskell Fish & Chips (Running Horses) @156 St James’s Road, Orrell, Wigan. WN5 7AA. I Ordered 1 Large Chips, 2 Large Sausages & a Small Gravy….. and charged. £8.84p Upon opening the bag of chips I found a NOT-SO-LARGE Greasy Over cooked mess So called Chips & the tub of gravy was ok but I would like to warn everyone that the Sausage what I bit into WAS Undercooked as it was Cold & Pink in the middle… It’s the WORST CHIPPY IN WIGAN ! Im also Considering to contact Wigan Health & Safety Food Hygiene….As they handle money & food without washing there hands…DISGUSTING 🤢🤮

they use really good quality food and you can taste the difference we had to queue but it was well worth the wait fish was nice and crisp and the chips are always perfect we travel 20 miles to visit here and come every Friday

Gaskells is commonly regardeed as one of the best finsh and chip shops in the immediate area. I have to say that I disagree. The fish and chips are perfectly acceptable, but they do not stand out for me.

this relatively small chippy has some of the best fish around, fish, chips and peas is our favourite from here, if it's busy you'll be standing outside as theres not much room inside

My experience was wonderful, Both myself and the wife had fish and chips and the children had sausage and chips. Nice to see a real English chippy flourishing. The size of the servings where excellent, staff as helpful as you need them to be. Definitely would recommend and return as a happy and satisfied customer.

I have used this chippy every week for a couple of years, previously it was always good, recently (last 2-3 months) I would say it has gone downhill, there is always a wait for food, the chips look like they have been cooked a couple of times and either the fish or the chips are cold, the interior looks grubby and outside looks no better, previously it always looked clean and tidy and the food was always hot both fish and chips. I wont be using this place again and I am surprised to still see a queue waiting for there meals.

Its getting very hit and miss, portion sizes seem to be dwindling whilst the price goes up. Chips can be good one day but bad the next time, depends on who's cooking i guess. Used to love come here.

My sister had chips and fish from Gaskells and shared them with me - they were of the delicious standard that I remember before my last posting.

Gaskells Chippy is very traditional in the the menu is the same now as it would of been for years. All the staple chippy produce is available. Service is good so even if there's a queue outside, it's still worth waiting for. Best Chipy for miles. You can also get traditional pop such as Dandelion and Burdock(in a glass bottle too).

Called in at 8.02 they shut at 8.30 cleaning the warmers, so it looked like they were ready for home. Ordered large chips (£1.80) just put a few more chips in a small tray. Took them home to find a tray full of scratchings (used to be free) & the odd chip that was rubbery & obviously been sat in the warmer for ages, tried to eat them but ended up in the bin ( sacrelidge ) come on its a chip how hard is it to get right. Thats me done terrible, terrible chippy.

Go here all the time. Never had a bad meal. Even on days like good friday when people are queuing out the door the wait isn't very long. They still cook the food properly rather than rush it.

Just called in for fish and chips 5 1/2 mile round trip but the fish is always nice . Waited for chips and thinking of all the times stood in a queue "waiting" for chips it never crossed my mind that like a lot of chippy,s that this one would rush them . We visit Gaskells on a regular basis, as the food is consistently good.I haven't scored a 5 as more often than not many items are not available, even in the middle of their opening hours.If you sold 20 in one day, why not try buying or making 40 the next? Increased customer satisfaction and profit too.

Gaskells is a small, unassuming place between Orrell and Billinge with parking alongside and friendly staff. Its quite traditional and the food is really nice but i do think that its overpriced, as the portions are quite small.

I have been going to the shop for many years never had a problem it is good quality ingredients freshly cooked

Gaskell chippy is by far the best around. Recent refurb had brought it up to date and modern and has given extra space or its popular customers to wait. Great chips every time !!!!

I am or was a frequent visitor to Upholland and the chip shop on St. James Road could be relied on for quality food. The fish unfailingly well cooked. Sadly my visits will be far less frequent

gaskells is a really good takeaway and you will go a long way to find any better . we go every few weeks and have never been disappointed.

Its hit or miss here. Its exceedingly expensive and the portions are minute. If you are lucky you may get a great tea, if not its in the bin then off somewhere else. Service is also verrrrrrrrrrrrrry sloooooooowwwww.

Great traditional popular chippy, parking outside. Fish goujons are lovely. Staff are friendly, always get a good meal.

Despite the refurb and counter move recently (and change of ownership a few years earlier) it still boasts the best fish and chips in the area, not to mention mushy peas.

Been here about 4 times as it's by my Fiancé's house, the fish and chips are great but can't have them as much as it would like as I'll get fat , the staff are friendly and helpful.

Been here for years and years. I remember the original Mr Gaskells! However, despite changing hands, and being refurbished and even rebuilt, this chippy remains one of the best around as can be testified by the queues on a Friday tea time!

Food expensive and small portions for the price of the food. Not impressed at all. These are the same kinda prices I pay in London.

Fish Chips and Peas and a chip barm were very nice but not value for money when compared to other chip shops in the area. This is a shame as it's a nice little chippy but with a overpriced menu.

They always say Fish and chips taste better at the seaside but it seems the tide must have come in as far as Billinge after the recent storms! First time visit but was very impressed by the traditional service, excellent food (would thoroughly recommend the Cod) and good valuel. Will definitely be making a return!
