Green Lane Fish and Chip Restaurant in Wigan

I had heard good things about this chip shop, looked on line and good reviews. We ordered haddock, chips and fish twice, a pot of curry sauce and a pea fritter. Unfortunately it was not a good experience. The fish was bland, it tasted of nothing and the batter a bit thick and soggy. The peas were OK to be fair& the pea fritter too greasy. However, the chips were a disaster, undercooked (to the point that I could crunch some of them!) and pale. The curry sauce is that sweet very mild tasting stuff. It also took the girl ages to wrap it up to the point of thinking has she been trained. The other staff didn't offer to help and were not busy. 1/5 is a fair score. Loads of food uneaten it was that poor and £23 worse off.

Took my grandson to The award winning Green Lane Chippy in Leigh. We opted to dine in. The food, and service were second to none. We’ll be be back!

Staff are always lovely and serve you pretty quickly, even during busy periods. This is our chippy of choice, although on one occasion the chips were slightly undercooked (not raw, just not very browned), because every other time as been great. I especially like their home made fish cakes.

Simply THE BEST!!!!! Quality of fish consistently excellent!

If you want a good British fish and chips this is the place. Still best chippy in the area.

Just went on the spare of the moment and fortunate they had a table. Always have fish, chips and mushy peas when here. It has never disappointed. Visited again today (Sept 24). Still excellent 👌

Excellent food every time we go

Food was lovely and the lady who served me was equally as lovely but the man who may have been the manager (not owner) was extremely unkind to firstly a lady working in the back who came to the front of house. The way he spoke to her was nasty. He then started shouting at someone else, the atmosphere was not nice. Because of this I won’t be returning, treating staff like this is archaic, bad for business and shows a real lack of management skills. I hope the staff team see this as I want them to know it was noticed and don’t stand for it!

Green Lane Chippy . Honestly can't fault this eat in eat out restaurant . The food is just spot on , all of it is great , we've dined in several times & had take away , tasty scran very flavour full , you can't get the food in your grid fast enough to keep your taste buds satisfied , everything we've eaten is just mint . The service on the take out is fast friendly , always a queue that just disappears never wait long at all , loads of staff to get your order filled quick , hot hot hot food evertime . Love this place glad we live so close to visit often mint mint mint Chippy in Leigh , going from Leigh to Astley down Green Lane adjacent to mini roundabout quality gaff . You must try 😉

Gluten Free Fish & Chips!! The food is good. It's great for somewhere to go that offers GF. Lots of staff serving. The serving staff was all fabulous. The same can't be said for the 3/4 grown-up men bickering and shouting at each behind the counter. Not a good or welcoming look to customers.

Owner screamed at a server for getting an order wrong, and made the overall atmosphere an unpleasant place. Do not support a place with such a horrible man in charge.

Food is sometimes too salty and sometimes unfortunately too oily. When not it's great consistency needs a bit of work.

Visited here yesterday with my very elderly parents , who struggle with their mobility. One of the waiters , a lovely lad with a Liverpool accent, put a ramp out to help them , he was so funny and lovely with my parents , what a star ! The fish and chips were amazing as usual , never disappointed, just love this place !

Our first time eating in the restaurant, it definitely won’t be the last! It’s probably the best fish and chip eating establishment in Leigh and surrounding area. The staff are very polite and friendly, spotlessly clean.

We don't live locally but when we visit family we make sure to visit here too. The chips are the best chips ever and everytime we come they taste the same whereas chippies near us can be hit and miss! Never change! 😋

Worst fish and chips I have ever had, chips undercooked and fish was soggy, what has happened to the lovely batter and fresh fish, definitely below par! Even tried the lightly battered and that was just as soggy.

Spur of the moment decision to eat out. On arrival the restaurant was full but they found us a table after a small wait. Waiter is a really nice funny guy especially with the grandchildren. Hubby had fish and chips was amazing as always. Kids meals one sausage and chips the other was fish bites and chips the fish bites equated to a medium size fish so fantastic portion. I had a fishcake which I honestly was disappointed with but everything else was second to none.

Had a lovely lunch here today. I'm gluten free so it's great to have proper fish & chips! The food was lovely and fresh and piping hot too! Staff are friendly and attentive. Des even made me some gluten free specials to take home! Been here many times and will be back again.

Went to Green lane chippy at 3pm on the 2nd May , both my wife and I had fish chips and mushy peas. As usual the fish were excellent, but the chips were terrible, hard and obviously re-heated. This is not the first time the chips have been poor as the chip are an important part of the meal it’s not acceptable. Will be trying somewhere else next time

Best fish and chips in the Northwest. It's got to be up there with the best in the country. Great, friendly service. The fish is as fresh as it gets. Amazingly good value.

Had a takeaway. Food was amazing and the place was really clean. Really decent amount of gluten free options, even gluten free vinegar. Slightly longer wait for gluten free as its cooked to order. If you ring ahead they'll have it ready for you.

I anticipated that this traditional chippy would be good, yet it exceeded my expectations significantly. The food was excellent. The chips were tender on the inside and encased in a crisp exterior. The fish was exceptional and a generous portion. I felt compelled to sample the pea fritter and rag pudding, and both I'll be having again. The staff were friendly and engaged in conversation. The chippy presented itself as clean, orderly, and spacious, offering seating for those who might prefer dining in over take-away. Additionally, a modest car park is situated adjacent to the chippy. NOTE: they edited my Facebook review to say it is recommended so do not trust the 4.6 star review as it uses Facebook to measure this shocking. used to go here regularly for a bit of something on a Friday night and it was amazing. dont know if the management has changed or what but the prices have soared and it wouldn't take a blind baby to tell you that costs are being cut at every corner. bones in the fish. flimsy trays. hair in the food. £7 for a rag pudding, small chips and gravy when i can go anywhere else and get something far better for the same cost. they seem to have added the restaurant and had an ego boost that puts kanye west to shame. my parents are refusing to go back after we ordered a meal for the 5 of us and were left with poor quality food, hairs and trays that barely made the 5 minute drive home for a shameful £30. either we were overcharged (wouldnt be the first time) or theyve gone mad. if you value your money, go somewhere else. (penny place is better quality for the price, kirkall lane is better for value, great chippy but not best for vegetarians and any weatherspoons or pub would give you a nice night out and probably not be much different in terms of price)

Best fish and chips I've had for years

This is one of those gems you discover and just cannot believe your luck. The place is amazing and the quality of the food was outstanding. They offer an amazing selection of gluten free food as well and if you have a gluten intolerance you won’t be disappointed. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and kind making you feel right at home. The food is amazing and the choice is fantastic.

By now most places have removed the "COVID 19" screens from their counters, but not at Green Lane Chippy. As a result it seems at least one of the staff has trouble hearing the orders, especially when traffic noise is factored in. We use this place a fair bit both the restaurant and takeaway sections but this time the dark haired female member of staff in the takeaway was rude, ignorant and grumpy. As my old Gran would say "put your face straight". Fish and chips as good as ever - hence the 4* star review - not 5* though due to the grumpiness on this occasion.

Finally got to visit Green Lane Chippy after many recommendations. Didn't disappoint. Food was excellent, staff were friendly and we felt it was great value. Small fish, chips and peas, a regular fish, chips and peas, an extra side of gravy plus bread and butter and a drink each for £26 and change. Will definitely be returning.

The food is nice to be honest but the tables are that squashed together you can barely get in & out of your chair. Bit of a clique in there, if you're not a regular don't expect to be spoken to. The floor is like a skating rink, greasy as hell so watch your step.

I absolutely love coming here with my partner and 3 year old son. It’s just quick and easy, the service is like no other place I’ve ever been to as soon as you order the food arrives within minutes. It’s a fairly small restaurant that offers proper hearty delicious dishes. Over the past couple of months they have added new Greek dishes and the Kleftico is out of this world😍 The staff are all amazing with my son and they have been for years. Highchairs are available and I even tried to pick up my son’s mess from the floor and the staff insisted that I sit down and they were to do it. I really do love coming here and would highly recommend visiting here whether you be a solo diner, a couple or a family there is something for everyone on the menu.

What happened? The customer service in this place has gone downhill massively! I used to come here almost every week. The past few times however, have just been one bad experience after another. Rude staff, always seem to have a chip on their shoulder, they make you feel like you're an annoyance just by simply ordering food. No manners, no thank you, no goodbye, it's like they can't wait to get rid of you! I'm not usually one to leave bad reviews, but I've had enough now, I live locally and was probably one of the most regular customers, but now I feel I should just go somewhere else in future when I fancy a 'chippy'. A few months back I came to get my usual grab and go chips for my dinner. My partner was home so I thought I'd bring her back a surprise treat. She's vegan, so I asked if they sold vegan pies. A yes or no answer would've been fine. But no. I was told by one of the men who works there something along the lines of "yeah, but they take about ten minutes", to which I said I'd be happy to wait, but their response was "you wanna wait ten minutes?", said in an irritated tone. I was then told by another man at the till "vegan pies cost £££ by the way." I can't remember the price I was told, but he was clearly trying to talk me out of buying a vegan pie for my partner. In the end I just ended up asking for another portion of chips, told the man at the till I'll just not have the pie if it's an issue. I don't understand how a paying customer could be treated with so much disrespect? I get the whole veganism thing is alien to most people, but if vegan food is something that is avaliable, then why scoff and make paying customers feel stupid for ordering it? Especially when the customer is happy to wait patiently if it is cooked to order? I work in the food and hospitality industry myself, and I can honestly say that my restaurant would never treat customers this way! There's no excuse! The two men who tried to talk me out of ordering the pie were obviously in a managerial role. I suppose they've never heard of the term 'lead by example', the poor staff have terrible role models to look up to, no wonder the majority of them are miserable most of the time, I feel sorry for them, knowing the managers running the place have no respect for their customers; I can't imagine they treat their staff very well either. If you can be bothered to read this Green Lane Chippy, take note, because you've lost a whole family of loyal, regular customers, due to your inexcusable actions. I've given your restaurant and it's staff far too many chances to redeem yourselfs! I don't know the names of the two men that I mentioned, but I'm sure this review is detailed enough for them to remember me! And yes, the group of four ladies and two babies that you served the other day were my family, one of the babies was my daughter. Tried to have one of the prams moved out of the way? Disgusting! Coming home to find my partner upset because of your horrible treatment was the final straw for me. Now all of your potential customers can see this review and will hopefully think twice about paying a visit. 'Award winning' 👏👏👏

Faultless as ever! The thing about this place is that everything is great - the choice, the quality, the price, the staff. Perfect every time. Their adaptability to your requests, their gluten free and vegetarian choices cannot be beaten. Michelle and Paul are friendly, welcoming and polite. Like family! You will not be disappointed 😊👌😊👌. visited on 3rd feb 2024 around 3 pm i discover this little lovely gem 2 years ago. i love their creative cuisine dish, large portions great prices for all dish. today i tryed Kleftico lamb on bobe cooked in the oven with deliciouse tomatoes ,carrots onions and red wine. amazing dish , well cooked the lamb ,melts in your mouth

Food was so tasty - such a great choice and the Greek specials are amazing. I would definitely recommend that you try this place if you haven't already - you won't be disappointed

We booked to go to Green lane chippy today. We booked a table for 4 people and room for two prams to which the restaurant said was fine. When I arrived at the restaurant with my pram, I was made to feel like a complete nuisance. I was asked if I could move my pram elsewhere, I said I could temporarily but would need it back as my baby needs to sleep (he’s 7 months old and can’t stay in a high chair for long stretches of time), I was huffed and puffed at, told my pram was in the way and given a sour attitude and dirty looks across the room. I didn’t say anything at the time as I was with my grandma and didn’t want to cause a scene, but decided to ring later in the day to file a complaint, genuine feedback as I felt one member of staff was rude and thought the business should know. Turns out the rude member of staff was the owner, who I had the displeasure of speaking to on the phone. When I tried to explain I didn’t appreciate the way I had been treated, I basically was told I was wrong, and that he wasn’t rude to me, then continued to say “I’m not rude love, you’re rude”, “I’m sorry if you think I was rude, but I wasn’t”. Still in complete shock that that’s how a business owner treats paying customers. Definitely won’t be going back. Food is nothing special, they’re still riding off the back of awards they won in 2013… it’s 2024.

Came here with my family today and 2 prams which when I called to book I requested this and was told it would be fine. One of the best fish and chips I had

This is an exceptional, traditional chippy and a regular haunt of ours. The food is always fresh and hot. My hubby always has the prawn cocktail to start (it's amazing). Mario and the staff are friendly and chatty. A real gem of a place.

I love this restaurant. If you were born before the 2000’s you’ll recognise the wonderful taste of chips the way they used to be. They also have a very good Gluten Free menu and all the Gluten Free food is cooked separately. We have a friend who can only eat gluten free and this is a great place to eat. Green Lane Chippy serves the usual chip shop food, pies, battered sausage etc and there is a take-away counter as well as dining in section. It is worth looking at the specials menu too though. I’ve had the home made pie before and it was lovely. They serve alcoholic drinks as well as soft drinks, tea and coffee. The staff are always polite and helpful. We were offered extra chips but we were too full to have them. There is a small car park behind the restaurant and a convenience store next door. You can park on the road but remember it is a residential area. Thanks for reading

Visited 11th January. What an absolute gem this place is. I have visited chip shops from all around the UK as travelling around is part of my job and can honestly put this chip shop in the very premium top level establishments for both service and food quality. It is clear to see why awards have been given to them. Well deserved. Thank you for the amazing meal, will be visiting again as soon as my travels bring me back in this part of the country.

Visited for wife's 50th Birthday gluten free options really good excellent food and service would highly recommend
