Pennington Plaice in Wigan

We were regulars when Martin owed the chip shop and have had good food here since but the place can be hit and miss. Today was the worst ever. Ordered 3 large fish with small chips also peas & gravy. An order we’ve had regularly so we no what fish we should have been given. Fish was small dry over cooked, covered in dry hard batter, part of the batter had no fish, chips oily and cold. 3 meals costing £20 most of which went in the bin. Won’t use this chippy again

So I order of the Uber eats website and when I got it the food was really badly burned and the chips was dark brown and made me ill had to report this place as it wasn't right for them to sell chips like this no refund what so ever they should be shutdown for what they had did.

Just attempted to eat an order delivered for 3 of us, the last order I had was really nice. But this time we all commented the chips were very gritty, we left most of it, very disappointed!

We always go here the food is hands down the best in town and they have great staff and are always friendly

Great food, great staff plus they deliver, another good chippy, Worth a visit, very friendly. Highly recommended.

Ordered food through uber,the order was short ,I rang the chippy and a member of staff drive to my house with the rest of order ,not many people do this ,I was so grateful.the good is lovely every time we order.

Great arrangements for social distancing and very cleanLast Saturday we went fish dry and nearly all the chips were bitty.Thinking this was a one off as food in past always been very good.Went again today and exactly the same as last week fish over cooked chips bitty and hard left most of them.

I’ve visited this chippy regular and could honestly say the puddings are the best tasting ones however I visited today to find the puddings are no longer the same full of gristle certainly a different brand

Really nice food, fish and chips were great and very tasty. We did order the food via Uber eats and less than 24 hours later my card details had been scammed. ( taking this up direct with the company / police / bank.)I would say that this has no effect on the food we had which was great. Just would not use Uber eats ever again.

We ordered to cod fish which was very tasty my partner said it was a little small for him but we both loved the taste. The chips were great cooked to perfection. Curry was ok. All in all great food and taste fab.

Our daughter and giant South African husband have recently moved to Leigh and we had a supper from this restaurant two weeks ago. As a retired hotelier of 45 years experience I am aware of the power of interet sights such as this and am reticent to give reviews.This is probably the best 'Chippy' I have been in for a very long time. The batter on the fish was beautifully light and the fish must have drawn it's last breath just before it was placed in the fryer. The chips were excellent and non of the greasy excuses served normally in other chippys. These were light, fluffy and grease free. We ate just at the end of the summer potato season so they were not as brown as you would expect but this is nothing to do with the establishment.Well done to the proprietor/fryer who was cooking on the night of our visit with his friendly support team. Can't wait for or next visit to our daughter! Congrats you should have qualified for the recent national chippy awards. Maybe next year?

great chippy been a few times now always good and even better now on uber eats as can get delivery , there fish and chips are lovely the hubbie love the half rice half chips with curry

Not Been for a while and won’t be going again,the fish was probably the worst I have ever tasted, too much batter over cooked and and no fish inside the batter hardly ,the chips where so bitty and can’t describe how bad it was never again,will stick to holden road chippy in the future !

One of many good chip shops I have visited in Leigh. Cod was cooked fresh to order and really white and tasty. Chips dry and crisp and very tasty mushy peas. Would advise one portion of chips and peas is enough for 2 people. Nice staff and very clean shop. Would go again.

Despite it not being my closest Fish & Chop shop and having to travel 4 miles each way I have visited Pennington Plaice regularly over a period of time, but after last night never again.After being asked by the fryer ‘how many fish’, she then said ‘just waiting for chips’. The server was completely oblivious to this and immediately asked for my order. She went straight to the chip store, which was clearly sparse of chips, but set about scraping together what she had. She got almost 3 scoops of the small ladle they use, before adding the last three chips, closing the lid and asking if I wanted salt and vinegar. She was deliberately being very careful to limit the opening of the tray so I could not see what was inside. I said I’d asked for a large portion of chips, she replied it was, but as opposed to opening the lid to show me, she closed it completely so I could not see inside.Her behaviour was very furtive and deliberate and clearly hoped I would not witness what she had done until I got home, disgraceful behaviour and clearly no respect for her customers.

Superb chippy, best we’ve had around the area, frequent visitors. Everything always hot and fresh. 👍🏻

Arrived for late lunch and despite being busy a table was found for us. Impeccable service throughout with starter and main, hard pressed to find anywhere else offering such great fish.

Great local fish & chip shop used regularly and never disappointed. Keep up the good work and will be back soon.

Great chippy and the bonus for us is on a Wednesday it is Gluten Free day for my ladies condition great job.

Thi is without doubt the best chippy in Leigh and one of the cheapest to boot. Give it a go but if you go on Friday be prepared for a wait !

My wife and children decided they wanted fish and chips last Friday, I was given the usual short notice and set off to find the food. I decided upon Pennington Plaice as I had been here before, having called at the garage to put some diesel in I decided to check what time they closed. Having checked the website it stated 9pm, it was 8.50 already and I was a good 10 mins away. I decided to call them and see if it was possible to call if I provided them with what I wanted, the lady who took my call was amazing, she noted down my order and assured me they would be able to do it.

Fantastic food, always plenty to choose from, the best Chippy around just very expensive towards other chip shops around the area,

Nos trasladamos a principios de 2015 en Leigh, así siendo tradicionales algunos lugares para pescado y patatas fritas, pero sólo los platos basura. Yo viajé a y de Preston y vio este lugar que siempre parecía estar lleno, así que dije a mi amigo de la casa que deberían probar. Así es, de lejos, la mejor de la ciudad. Un buen pescado y "fish and chips" hecha a la orden. Yo personalmente creo que de todos los sitios de comida para llevar disponibles incluyendo diferentes cocinas este es mi favorito, ya que trae un sentido de inicio en Londres. Nada sabe igual!

Orden de pescado tomada a la llegada, ligeramente con mantequilla si se prefiere. Patatas fritas, así que no tener constante que los sat las edades. El personal es amable y servicial, que dan las porciones son muy generosas. Muy sabroso, guisantes, patatas fritas y la salsa de curry de pescado es imprescindible también. Sin duda volveremos de nuevo

La comida recién hecha, brillantemente pricedxand personal muy amable. Qué más puedo decir aparte de probarlo.

Siempre excelente pescado fresco y sirven salsa bastante bien. Tienen una buena selección de comidas para niños.

Top fish and chips. Excelente comida de calidad y las porciones son muy grandes. Las patatas fritas de pescado guisantes no estándar y dos de nosotros.

Fish are cooked beautifully, the batter thin and crispy, chips are always nice mushy peas and curry sauce are a must.

This has to be our favourite chippy. We have never had any complaints and the kids love the children's menu offered. Fish is nice and not greasy and good size potions. Staff are pretty friendly though it can get really busy which is a sign of just how good the chippy is.

Definitely best chippy in Leigh. I always get fish, chips mushy peas and carton of curry. Always enjoy it.Lovely friendly staff.

Been here a few times now and i can say i dont kno why people rave about this chippy its not the best.went last nite and it was awful.the whole lot went in the bin.i agree the staff are not plesant.wont be goin again.

Pennington Plaice is the place for fish and chips, the fish are cooked fresh as you walk in they ask how many fish you want, the fish is a good size ,nice crispy batter with lovely fish, the chips are very big portions ,we share 1 portion between two of us. They also do pies and puddings too to order and curry dishes. I will deffinetly be calling again and recommend this good chippy. . The only drawback is sometimes it can be a busy spot to ark on a busy teatime has it is on a main road

We have visited here a couple of times since our last review and are glad we returned. Food was back to usual high standards. Fish freshly cooked, crisp and tasty with very good chips. Best place by far for a 'lightly battered'! Service was friendly and efficient as always, even though it was a really busy teatime.

Eat there every week friendly staff good portions in my opinion it's the best chippy in the Leigh area

Won best fish and chip shop north west 2015 , always fresh and cooked to order , delicious . There tends to be a queue but waiting time is minimal, staff friendly and efficient.

I am a regular user of Pennington Plaice, the staff are really helpful, if you have special request you can order it as soon as you get through the doors and it's ready as soon as you come to get served.The chips are an amazing prize winning treat and the fish are battered just as you want them to be, try the scallops for a nice change, absolutely scrumptious.I highly recommend this traditional chippy as one if not the best in the local area.Fantastic menu at very reasonable prices, a great family tea to be picked up here

We have gone here for many years and have considered it to be the best place for fish and chips locally. However, our last two visits have been a bit disappointing. We have called in earlier than usual, just after teatime opening, to pick up food for us and my parents who prefer to eat earlier. We found that the fish has been poorer quality and I would say 'rubbery' in texture and the chips not as nice as when we have visited later in the evening. I'm not sure what went wrong on these occasions but wonder if it had been left for some time? The consensus was that it tasted as if it had. On the plus side, service was good - prompt and friendly as we have always found it.

Some time good and sometimes not ..too hit and miss...the staff aren't very customer friendly either sadly..they rarely smile and are quite stroppy and rude..you don't often see that as a customer anymore...most places do make a great effort..I know its only a chippy but they should have SOME standards..bloody awfull service..

Called in here today and saw a meal deal offer on the wall Pie,Chips,Peas & Gravy for £3,20 so decided to have that along with 2 scollops at 35p each but asked for no gravy as i dont really like it, she tilled it up and said £4.00 well its been a long time since i was at school but that should have been £3.90 so i asked how do you get £4.00 well the young lady says because your not having the gravy its not a meal deal offer, i said so your charging me 10p extra because i don't want something, i got my £4.00 back and went to a chip shop round the corner. I have been before and the chips are ok but the staff need to learn how to bend a little

The best Fish and chips in the area, the fish is cooked to order, so at its best , and not left to sweat away under a hot lamp, and the chips are always hot and golden brown and not so greasy, the curry sauce is excellent thick and tasty , the mushy peas were abit to stodgy for me , but we're very tasty , highly recommend for a fantastic fish supper

The chips here are far superior, cooked longer and not insipid in colour like Green Lane, its easier to get served and you dont just get 6 chips per portion !!!

This is the best chippy in Leigh ! Yes I know Green Lane is number one , but if you just want a take away meal this is better value and just as good.Usually we get 2 small fish, chips, gravy & peas for under £7 !!The fish is always spot on and cooked to order, the chips are freshly done as it always so busy.

Great fish and chips best in leigh by far, as my daughter says the standard has been raised:) friendly staff are also a plus
