Gardners Arms Bar & Restaurant in Mid Sussex

My wife took me here for a birthday lunch. The pub restaurant is traditional and very comfortable. We chose from the main menu and the specials menu and the food was excellent, to start my wife had the crab ravioli and I had the beetroot and goats cheese salad, outstanding. For mains we both had the pork belly and wow, it did not disappoint, compliments to the chef. I would highly recommend it!

We had a really good dinner. All the dishes were very well cooked and presented - high quality restaurant standard rather than pub grub but reasonably priced. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxing.

Everything was perfect until we had our bill, our glass of wine was £12.00 each, such a shame, everything else was lovely

The staff are attentive and friendly. The atmosphere and cleanliness is good. However the food is mostly frozen, and mass prepared, probably so it’s easier to recruit kitchen staff. Everything is great except the food

Utterly disappointing! Second worst meal I have ever eaten in my life. Friends took us out for special birthday dinner on a Saturday night. Lovely decor but that was it. The menu had very small print that many of the dishes were made with vegan friendly ingredients. There was no normal Parmesan cheese available whilst serving butternut squash ravioli. Odd! It was disgusting. A few pieces of soggy veg & supposed confit tomatoes - purely halved & heated cherry tomatoes added. Terrible. The waitress could have checked to see if we wanted to order a vegan meal when the menu has roasts etc included. It was not clearly a vegan based menu, it was as if the chefs were subversively feeding us alternative food. I ordered arancini as a starter- it had vegan “cheese” grated over it - smelled terrible. They kindly made me another portion without “cheese” on top but the small balls were frozen in the middle. My husband had shepherds pie as a main which was a tiny portion, sloppy & tasted like a salt pit- as if it was an Iceland frozen ready meal. The only custard available with desserts like sponge & crumble was dairy-free. Half way through the meal the waitress greeted two people & said to us- “oh my chefs are back from holiday” - they should have closed the kitchen if they couldn’t find suitable replacements. Go for a drink at a cozy fire but don’t waste your money.

Great British pub with logs fires, great food and service - loads of parking and opposite the South of England Show if you fancy a walk first - dogs allowed in the pub in a special area too !

Lovely pub Sunday roast inedible the roast beef was awful, chicken alternative was a cheap leg not breast as expected. Very poor value.

Sadly this was a dreadful experience. It took an hour and a half to get our main course despite complaints to a waiter who could not have cared less. He said they were busy but that did not stop all the people around us who arrived after us being served before us. When it came, the food was tasteless and certainly not worth the wait. We won’t be returning here.

I am vegan. There were three vegan options which is good. I had the nut-free roast. Basically tasted like bread-based stuffing with a few seeds and cranberries thrown in. Vegan food needs to contain protein. Adults need at least 50g of protein a day. 100kg of pumpkin or other seeds would be needed to get a decent amount. Nuts are great - why not have them in the vegan roast? (or have them as an option on top of the roast eg roast walnuts/flaked almonds). The beetroot wellington had no high protein containing ingredients - why not add some lentils, chickpeas or nuts for a protein boost? My partner had the hake which was tasty but quite a small portion. Luckily he had ordered a side of mixed vegetables, which was OK.

Only one meat for Sunday roast on the menu. Beef? Tough as old boots. Seriously, this is really bad. The rest of the plate was ok’ish apart from the raw parsnip. For £17.95 there are better offerings elsewhere. Staff were lovely, and helpful. Although food came out before drinks. If you’re only offering one meat on the main menu; surely it would be the best you can do. Not in this case. The special of the day is roast chicken , which runs out within an hour. Now I understand why. The place itself is lovely - sort your beef out and add more choices on a Sunday.

Awful, just awful! Bad service, miserable staff, stale atmosphere. Place was dirty and looks very tired. Will not return. My advice is…avoid!

Last time I ate here it was not very good but I had heard that changes had been made. The refurbishment / decorating is really nice. Lovely atmosphere. happy to say the food was excellent. Starter portion on the small side but absolutely delicious. Restaurant was quite busy but the waiting service was very good. Attentive and friendly staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would recommend and return.

Disappointed to give a 2* review but we’ve visited many times before mainly as my husband loves the beer and although have had to complain once in the past about a terrible waitress and food, nothing like yesterday. We were with our grandchildren, and when I enquired about the children’s roast beef, was told that the veg was more ‘child friendly’ in as much as it would be potatoes, carrots, peas etc without things like leeks parsnip and red cabbage so we were surprised when her roast had exactly the same veg as ours, so we ate her red cabbage and parsnips. My husband got no potatoes on his roast at all so we were bought some separately. The 2 roast beef dinners were so tough, even I couldn’t cut my granddaughters up, even with the steak knife my husband had been given to eat his, not a good sign! I had roast pork, which was dry but edible and all the veg, apart from the potatoes, were cold. I’m not sure what cut of beef it was as the slices were almost square with a piece of gristle running right across the bottom and top, and it definitely wasn’t 21 day aged as claimed. We mentioned about the beef to the waitress when she cleared and she didn’t seem surprised as she finished our sentence and told us the beef was tough so I’m guessing ours wasn’t the only complaint? She deducted my granddaughters roast from our bill. Another gripe we had was the fact that as part of the refurb, they’ve crammed a lot more tables into the area where we sat. We had a round table, with at first, just 3 chairs even though we’d booked for 4 which meant we were even more crammed when the extra chair was bought as the table was right against the wall but there were no other empty tables to move to. We came home feeling very disappointed and definitely won’t be going back, which is a shame, as we’ve been going for years, with various family members, all of whom have enjoyed their food and experience, I’d appreciate feedback from the management…

Pub has easy parking and a nice ambiance inside but food on this visit was disappointing. Steak in particular although nicely presented was as tough as old boots. We won’t be hurrying back I’m afraid.

Friendly, welcoming and efficient staff. Warm ambience and comfortable well kept surroundings. Great choice of food. I had the Venison Bourgignon with mash and carrots - very tasty.

An very average Sunday Roast. Beef was very tough and certainly not medium rare which is a shame as we thought it was under new management.

The food and atmosphere are fantastic. The menu has a good selection. The lovely open fire on a cold evening is a real treat. The staff were very friendly but it was a little unorganised, no cutlery on the table we were a party of 7 and some members had finished their main meal before others got there's, which was a little disappointing. Also its a cash less restaurant so someone had to pick up a big bill and then we sorted it afterwards which isn't great. But we did enjoy our evening.

The new interior and makeover is great and very welcoming. Sadly our food was disappointing - the fish pie had try potato and was tasteless, very little fish. The pastry was the same (not sure if pastry is a good idea with a fish pie - but tasteless and dry pastry definately not), my husbands tanglefoot pie (which used to be good before the new menu) was similar although the filling was nice. We live locally and were feeling excited to have a revamped cosy space with great food but the food was a let down. The prices are not cheap either, which is not a problem if the food is great. I hope this inspires the team to improve the food, as many locals would go often if the food standard was high. We certainly would.

Popped in here for an impromptu supper and with only a short amount of time available. Staff showed us to a table and despite it being busy, our food arrived within 10 minutes. Our waiter (a chap in training for taking on a management role elsewhere with company-he will be great!), was super friendly and helpful as indeed were all the staff. It is so rare to find attentive staff nowadays but everyone working here seemed to be really customer focused.Food was great too. We will be back.

This was our first visit to the Gardners Arms following a recommendation and what a wonderful experience it was. From the moment we arrived the waitress could not have been more helpful or attentive, nothing was too much trouble. She recommended a lovely bottle of Sauvignon blanc to accompany our meal and talked through the menu options which as a pescatarian was very helpful. I had the toasted crumpet with crab which was delicious and my husband the pigs in blanket sausage roll which had also been recommended and he gave it 9/10, it would have been 10/10 if it had some slices of tomato with it but that’s his personal preference. As an after thought I’m sure if we’d of asked the waitress she could have accommodated this. For the main i had (from the specials board) the Katsu fishcake and my husband had the steak and tangle foot pie with triple cooked chips instead of buttery mash and he asked for extra gravy which was not an issue at all. Both main meals were delicious and as with the starters neither of us left a morsel on our plates. For the puddings we both chose the coffee and Irish cream cheesecake, I can honestly say it’s the best homemade cheesecake we’ve ever had! From start to finish the food, the waitress service and the deputy manager Nicola who we met was absolutely sublime. It was also nice that we had the opportunity to thank the chef who obviously takes great pride in his food. We would thoroughly recommend the Gardners Arms and look forward to our next visit very soon.

What a little gem of a place! Beautiful food, atmosphere, staff and service. All 4 of us throughly enjoyed every course. The staff we just a joy, and nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend the Raspberry Creme Brulee and Pigs & Blanket Sausage Roll. We will be back here again soon. Thank you for having us

We always visit this wonderful pub when we attend Paws in the Park at the Showground. The first time we visited, we were cold and needed comfort, we were met by a huge open fire. We didn’t know if we would be allowed in with our dogs. We were welcomed by the friendliest staff that you could hope for. We’ve visited many times since then and every time is such a happy experience. If it was our local, I don’t think I’d bother cooking again. We’re vegetarians and we certainly don’t feel like we’ve just been offered one vegetarian option as an afterthought. There are so many vegetarian starters and main course options and every one is delicious. The tables have plenty of room around them so you don’t feel like you’re on top of your neighbours. We recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary and chose The Gardener’s Arms to take some friends. The staff were amazing, as usual, they couldn’t do enough to make our evening a lovely happy night to remember. The champagne was delicious! We love their Paarl Heights wines so much, we found where we could buy them online when we are at home. Can’t decide whether I prefer the white or the red, both delicious. We will definitely be visiting The Gardener’s Arms the next time we attend Paws in the Park. I’d like to thank the staff for being so lovely.

I booked a table to celebrate my partners birthday greeted by a very polite team member on arrival and taken to out table then mr misery arrivecd to take our order no how are you etc Staters arivved no would you like any saucers to go with it the food was very good no complaints Main meal arrived thrown at us and guy walks away no would you like any mustard etc on the steak we then had to leave our meal and ask the bar staff to provide the mustard the guy walks pust at least 5 times but no hi guys are you happy with the food etc After this we asked for the bill and left and went to a local pub to finish our evening The pub was not busy so customer service should of been very high but sadly not Sadly i would not recommend or come back to this restaurant

Another poor meal with poor service. This place could be amazing with the right staff or somebody that owned the pub instead of just managing - such a shame as the setting & location is superb.

We had arranged to meet friends for lunch, but had not realised that there was an antiques fair being held at the show ground, so the pub was exceedingly busy. The staff, though, were more than a match for the conditions. We were shown to our table, drinks orders taken and served in the blink of an eye. The kitchen staff were also on the ball. Our food arrived quickly, it was all freshly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and even presented more elegantly than pub grub. The portion sizes were also generous. Throughout our stay the staff worked at flank speed, but with a smile on their face, and I was left with the impression that they could even move up a gear, if it were needed.

We decide to get fresh air and lunch while the sun come up and covid situation a bit better. We cam here before and had sunday roast lunch with friends. I knew I will be back here and try other menu as previous luch are really good. Place is easy to find on map. It has big capacity car park. We love the outdoor area however this time the wind suddenly a bit strong so we decide to sit inside.We need to scan barcode for NHS apps when we arrive. Staff locate the guest in distance, so we feel comfortable.Food was delicious and the portion were big. The bread was good and enough to make u occupied before main course arrive.My main course was big portion, however I manage to finish it as it taste so good. My husband had pie steak which is very good too.The food were come very quick and we like it. Staff asked us to take it from the tray. Keep the social distance, which is good. We really want to have dessert but no room for it.We will back again and try other menu. We have had mixed results at the Gardeners Arms in the past but thought we'd try again for an evening meal. Having chosen our drinks, I was surprised that there was no draft lager available to make a lager-shandy (I was driving) so it was Peroni and separate glass of lemonade. All three of us had the same whitebait starter which was exceptionally good and not covered in breadcrumbs. Three separate main dishes all of which were good although despite asking for plenty of tomato ketchup, two small dishes arrived insufficient for even a light coating on the large chips. The deserts sadly went down hill with one being correct, one being wrong and the third (white chocolate cheesecake) not arriving until the others had finished. When it arrived, it tasted more like a slimy blancmange with a meringue on top and not like cheese cake. To be fair, due to its lateness, without asking they took it off the bill. They did the same to the next table who returned a salad so something appeared to be wrong in the kitchen. We will try it again once we have given the other pubs in the area a chance.

Excellent lunch after booking easily with just over an hour’s notice. Maître de welcoming and waitress very polite and solicitous. Food good, service brilliant and dessert excellent too. Well worth a visit!

Waited at booked table for over 20 mins before being told that we had to use the table app which none of us could work and when did finally get onto the menu app, couldn't see properly as sun strong and very long winded, he reluctantly agreed to take the order manually ....and then had to wait and wait for drinks, then again very long wait for food which clearly had been rushed as short staffed. Fish tasted 'fishy' and undercooked, chicken burgers had peculiar taste as did the orange mayo. Half a lager is £5.45 ... bit pricy for small village pub. Prices of food generally okay but need a new menu and a chef who can cook and in good time .. we nearly left completely... what happened to a menu you could actually understand such as pate and toast, ploughmans, smoked mackerel salad, chicken and chips?? Seems menus these days are geared for maximum profit and very little enjoyment from the customer, you can still get a good profit from a simple menu, I would love to have been allowed to order from the childrens menu, how about a dieter's menu same as childs menu with same prices!! So a lovely pub for ambiance but not for food sadly, just change the menus and get new staff, by the way the waitress was good at her job and liked people very good at her job....pity about the rest buy room for improvement once managed better.

First trip out after lockdown. Easy booking process online. Friendly staff. Good COVID precautions and sanitisation. Reduced menu, but good selection of some classics. Steak Frites for me and Chocolate Torte for myself, both excellent, washed down with some refreshing Badger Fursty Ferret. I’m also told that the Steak and Tanglefoot pies were packed with meat and delicious and the sticky toffee pudding excellent too. Thanks to the team for your efforts, great to have you all back and look forward to my next visit. Highly recommended.

Unplanned stop here on the way home from a soggy evening at glow wild. We didn’t have a booking but they found us a table. Lovely waitress couldn’t do enough for us and very COVID compliant. I had the burger my partner had soup as a main course. Burger was delicious and all food piping hot no complaints whatsoever and very pleased with meal and service Would go again if passing by

Have been to the Gardners Arms on numerous occasions, usually with friends but due to COVID it was just myself and my husband to celebrate his birthday prior to visiting Glow Wild. Sadly the meal did not meet our usual expectations with luke warm meat, hard luke warm potatoes and even luke warm gravy! I was ready to complain but my husband didn’t want to spoil the evening (and the waitress was so lovely) so I left it. Hopefully this was just a bad night in the kitchen!

My son says he would eat here every night if he could! Staff had a good understanding of COVID guidelines and the pub seemed very clean, wasn’t to cold even though we were sat near the door. Food served quickly (hungry children happy) and very reasonably priced. Was also nice to see menus that could be wiped down rather than single use thrown away

My wife and I visited with our 2 young children recently and as usual had a lovely meal. The food is always great at The Gardeners Arms but what makes it special is the atmosphere / feeling you get there - its a warm, cosy location that almost feels like home.Visited a few times since living in Sussex and will continue to do so once this 2nd lockdown is over.
