Good menu, lots of choice, fast service and delicious food. It’s a bit pricey, but once in a while you deserve it. A great place just to sit and talk and on a fine day, you can do this outside.

Lovely October day. Went into this wonderfully situated cafe and asked for 6 people to be seated at 2.45. We wanted tea and cakes. Assistant said no seats.very odd attitude. Lunch only til 4. Said Cafe full even though there were seats. Most unhelpful staff. Won’t be going back. There were seats outside which we would have taken. Obviously making money and don’t want custom. Very disappointing.

Having viewed the NAtional Gallery collections we had lunch in the Restaurant which is on a terrace overlooking the ravine and grassy banks. As it was a beautifully sunny day, we chose to sit outside to dine. My Cullen Skink was delicious and served with lovely focaccia, made a substantial meal. My Husband chose the Haddock and Chips with pea puree, and was impressed with the quality of an exceptionally generous portion. The service was good and the standard of cleanliness was high.

My title just about sums this place up. Our baguettes were tough to the point of being stale and they were quite pricey, though the price is what you would expect at a prestigious location such as this. The very basic plastic chairs and tables let down the atmosphere. Altogether a bit of a shame that it couldn't be a bit more enticing.

The staff are pleasant and friendly, if a touch incompetent, and the coffee is good but it's very overpriced. I had a Goat's Cheese, Rocket and Pesto roll which actually tasted nice with good ingredients but at £6.95 for one slice of cheese cut in half, a few leaves and a tiny spread of pesto it was very poor value for money.

Located within the gallery complex and lacking in the queue's and noise of the cafe, this restaurant offers a quiet, tranquil setting, good food and attentive service. We called in for afternoon tea and the selection of cakes and sandwiches was good, served on the traditional three-tiered stand. Good to see a choice of teas and the use of lose leaf with a proper strainer. The cheese board is also to be recommended and was plentiful.Definitely NOT cheap, but very much in keeping with the tranquility and quality of the gallery. The additional of harp playing in the background was a nice touch and added to the ambiance. The cost probably rules this out as a venue for general dining, but as an addition to a visit to the gallery it makes a lot of sense. I left feeling content and nicely full, if a little lighter in the pocket.

Prices mean that this isn't a gallery snack bar, but the locally sourced produce does taste good, and for the rest, service is OK (but it's big and busy so don't expect to be 'cared for'), portions are about normal and at lkeast half of what we ate was clearly made for the table. Decent, handy for Art lovers, a touch pricey for what you actually get.

I've been to Contini in the art gallery before for tea and cake. The cake was a bit tasteless and dry that time, but I agreed to meet my brother there yesterday for lunch. Surprisingly, it was very busy, as the prices are high and there are lots of better value places nearby. We only wanted a light lunch and, due to limited choice, ended up ordering an Aberdeen-style buttery roll with ham and cheese. It was grilled, solid, greasy, with a thin slice of melted cheese and a slice of ham that had also been dried up during the grilling process. For this poor version of a sandwich they charged £8.95 each. We won't be back. (having discussed it with friends since, they also had the opinion it is overpriced with poor food.)

There is a quick self service coffee bar in the galleries reception area that serves nice cakes, but the main tearoom next door offers a more extensive menu including afternoon tea. A table for afternoon tea can be booked online - which is a good service as the tearoom can get busy. The food is of a high standard and the location in the National Gallery in the heart of Princes Street gardens is very nice.

I went here with my partner mid afternoon. They were quite busy but certainly not packed out by any means. We were seated quickly and supplied with a menu. There appeared to be plenty of staff but we were left for 20 min before we managed to stop a staff member and ask to place the order. I had a glass of wine, which was fine. My partner ordered a Knickerbocker Glory. It looked very good and tasted good, but was perhaps their version of this retro dessert, being a much smaller glass than I recall and without some of the ingredients.

We stopped here to refuel after walking around the excellent Turner exhibition upstairs. The restaurant was almost empty, and we were seated in no time after walking in. Menus were immediately forthcoming, and then.........we waited for 10 minutes, towards the end desperately trying to catch the eye of any of the waiting staff drifting back and forth past our table, before someone finally came to take our order. It's never a good sign when you're actually considering walking out before you've even tried the food, is it? Or when you actually have to ask a waitress to take one's order.I had coffee and a slice of cake - the cappucino was excellent, a really nice cup of coffee. The slice of chocolate gateau on the other hand was dry, processed and very average indeed, especially considering its not insubstantial price. The gallery upstairs is a class act, and I'm surprised that the standard of catering downstairs doesn't reflect that.

We had a nice lunch at the Gallery restaurant last summer so decided to go there again today but were very disappointed. My wife ordered Venison Stew which had just three meagre and tough pieces of meat in an indifferent gravy while our guest had salmon which was badly overcooked on the outside. The third order, smoked haddock stew, was acceptable. The dessert, apple pie and quince, was also acceptable but lacking in quince. A point to note is that the comfort of the seating varies. The wooden sideways benches in the upper level are set too low and their backrests are angular and awkward to lean back against. The service was pleasant and quite efficient and the atmosphere is very agreeable - it is a pity it is not matched by the quality of the food. When my wife complained about the Venison stew, she was offered a free cup of coffee. This duly came but there was such a long delay in serving the apple pie and quince that the coffee had gone completely cold by the time she was ready to have it.

Having been a big fan of the National Gallery restaurant and having used it for personal and business meals, I was shocked by the drop in quality at my last visit in March 2009. I struggled through my starter of butternut squash risotto - the rice was more al concrete than al dente and the cubes of butternut squash were equally brick like. I suffered in silence as I didn't want to upset my dining companion. However, when I found myself hunting around my plate for some scraps of lamb amongst the fat and the tasteless gravy I drew the line and sent it back to the kitchen. The service was equally woeful and when we paid our bill and commented that our experience had been less than pleasant we were greeted with the most insincere and sarcastic apology by a girl of school age who would be well advised to avoid a career involving anything to do with customer service. I will not be going back and I would advise the restaurant to embark on some urgent staff re-training before the rest of the Edinburgh locals abandon the experience. Tourists be warned.

I almost never leave reviews, but I felt I had to because I felt so ripped off here. I'm a local and had time to kill before work so I popped in for lunch. The staff were friendly and the service was quick, but I got the smallest piece of avocado toast I've ever seen for a tenner. I'm still hungry. I sort of knew it would be a mistake to go somewhere touristy but now I know I definitely won't be back. There are nicer places on Cockburn Street, never mind the rest of the Old Town.

I had read some of the negative reviews and was a bit wary after booking but it was a really nice experience. They took us up to the lounge and again we had friendly service . All made for a great night , well done
