waitresses were useless busybodies plenty of tables free, noone there to seat you so after we settled in on our own one of them got all uppity about it - if they were there in the 1st place doing her job that hassle would not have happened - we just left and will not return - same happened to friends of ours too

Clare's Café is our favourite place to go for coffee when shopping in Llandudno. It is a haven of peace in a busy town. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the food is especially good. Even the humble tea-cake is a real treat with plenty of butter, rather than the usual meagre amount offered in other places. The cakes are sensational too. The café is on the top floor, and even the ride in the original lift is a special event. To visit Clare's Café is to step out of today's hustle and bustle and into a more tranquil and elegant environment. Try it and see for yourself!

We have visited the café on a number of occasions over the last five years and always found the grub nice and the staff friendly. On Thursday they absolutely excelled themselves with one of the best roast beef dinners we have ever tasted. The beef was succulent and soo tasty, and I might add plenty of it. The Yorkshire was straight from heaven and the peas seemed hand picked. Everything was perfect and the staff were excellent. 10 out of 10.

We were looking forward to a nice lunch in this restaurant that we had found by visitIing the store downstairs. The young waitress was pleasant & friendly. The cafe was light and airy. However we could see the food being prepared in the kitchen from where we were sitting. Unfortunately we witnessed the chef using her bare hands to dish out the carrots, potatoes AND the peas on to our plates. We would have thought the correct and hygienic way would be to use serving utensils. We brought it to the attention of the young waitress and then left.

My wife and I have been to the cafe at Clares on at least two ocasions and find it ideal. The restaurant is pleasant, the staff friendly and most importantly the food is very tasty and for a department store very reasonably priced. My wife had a delicious cream tea for just over £4 while I had the teacakes and tea package for less than £3. There are also sandwiches, jacket potatoes and paninis. The lift up to the restaurant on the second floor is a bit antiquated but overall, a very nice meal for anyone visiting Llandudno.

I have previously worked here, and I would not suggest to others. The management spend their day gossiping and b*tching about customers, aka Emma. If you want a nice shopping experience, this isn’t the shop for you. If they come over seeming nice, they are just being two faced to get their bonuses. The young staff are lovely, they clearly know what they are doing, as they doing everything because the witches that work their are too and old and far too lazy.

I went for a sandwich here on Tuesday and they are now served differently on a thicker bread which was nice, they used to be on thin bread (which were also very nice), I would however prefer the side salad rather than crisps like they used to do. I also had afternoon tea which I enjoyed but I have to say that - please could the tea be served in china cups and not the bog standard cups as in my opinion a nice cuppa should be served in this way. Not sure if I also like the fact that you now have to get up and get your own knife/forks as it slightly takes away the fact that we used to feel a bit special when we was waited on. The prices are still the same which is fine but the service has changed and for me it kinda takes the shine out of what this lovely Restaurant used to deliver. I would still go again but will be on the lookout for the traditional place we have come to love.

We stopped here for Saturday lunch after browsing the store. All the staff to get us to the 2nd floor with our extended family where very very helpful. Then the lady who appears to the main one, grumpy and can't be bothered attitude. She was huffing and puffing that she had to make room for a wheelchair, then said the wheelchair couldn't be positioned in a certain place, what a load of fuss for nothing!!! The younger girls who served us where a little overwhelmed with the big order, but they had service with a smile and happy to accomodate our strange requests. The food was average and cheap, however due to the poor service, or lack of interest from the leading lady, we will not return. We where not asked was everything ok, placing hot drinks directly in front of children is not a good start. I payed on card, and i can honestly say the only smile i got was when i put £2 in the tin, which was for the younger girls. If my youngest daughter would have not been upset, then i would have asked to speak to the manager. It was such a shame as the atmosphere was lovely and someone obviously makes the effort by the looks of the cake stand

As other reviewers have pointed out, this cafe is reached via an antiquated lift in a traditional old fashioned department store in a charming sea side resort. On entering the cafe you are suddenly whisked to France by somewhat over the top wallpaper featuring Parisian night life scenes! Otherwise very British decor with old fashioned chairs & tables. So far so good. Ordered a simple afternoon tea which took ages to come and was served on works canteen type crockery by a somewhat harassed girl. Quality of food was OK but the "strawberry jam" was a pink pulp in a tiny plastic ready pack. I doubt that patrons of a works canteen would have been impressed even if it was for free.On paying I commented to the only girl looking after the place that it would be nice if they could spend a little more on better quality jam. Only a small point, but an interesting reaction. "We are not allowed to". "There's never enough money for things" "It's dreadful" "we are short staffed".A great shame; A little care and attention to detail could transform a rather soul-less place into a lively welcoming, yet traditional, cafe in a town that is not short of more vibrant venues, I leave the readers of this review to draw their own conclusions.

One of our drinks arrived quickly but the other never materialised so eventually we had to ask for it and it was brought to us. We ordered sandwiches which were nice but our main problem was that the staff were scraping all the customers left over food into an open top bin in full view and right next to where we and other people were sitting and it really put me off my lunch. This should be done at the back out of the sight and hearing of the customers. Had the cafe not been as full we would have asked to move to another table.

It looks very vintage which was nice enough and the staff were quite friendly, the food however was greatly lacking! We had the chicken and mushroom pie from the specials board. When it arrived we were disappointed straight away! The veg was rubbery tinned rubbish, the mash tasted like smash, the roasts were definatly pre made frozen mush and the pie was slimey inside and it was impossible to eat for a while as it was obviously over pinged in the microwave to the point of boiling hot! The nicest thing about the dish was the pastry on the pie! Looking around we noticed that almost every customer was over 70 which is why this nursing home style food does ok here. It cost us £20 for 2 small dinners and a tea for two so quite dear for what you get! This place should stick to being a department store and leave the food to the many better restaurants in town! I would avoid if your under 70 and appreciate good food.

We have been visiting Clares for over seven years at least three times a year. Sadly today August 4th was our last.As a treat for our special needs son we booked a hotel for a long weekend and planned to eat as Clares before our journey home. We asked for thnree sandwiches anmd tea for two with another cup for our son so that we could give him drink as we have found in the past that there is plenty for two in the pot. Our son will only take sips and has less than half a cup.We were amazed when the waitress (with a smirk on her face) refused us another cup, when I asked why she said the cup has to be washed. When I was paying my bill I again asked the cashier why we was refused, she said it stops people coming in and buying a pot of tea for one and sharing it with others. I said but we ordered three sandwiches and two teas surely you could have used some common sense. Sadly no.So its goodbye to Clares in the future.

My Father and I came in here yesterday for a light lunch. We were shown to a table directly under an air conditioning vent so were very uncomfortable from the minute we sat down. My Father put his cap on to keep warm. I went to the lavatory which had a sign on announcing it was only for the use of cafe customers (as opposed to department store customers?). The toilet was tiny and had run out of soap. All this was not great but it did not get better. We decided to order soup of the day. We waited about 15 minutes and the witress apologised as they were so busy but that was ok although we were both pretty cold by this time from the air conditioning. When we tasted the soup I could not believe it! It tasted exactly like Campbells condensed mushroom soup - straight out of a tin. The modest portion of soup was served with the cheapest and nastiest bread roll possible. I looked at what the other diners were eating. The jacket potatoes looked ok but very small and the toasted sandwiches and quiche looked better however I can only rate on what I had which was dreadful.TIP - enjoy your ride up in the vintage lift then head straight down again and find somewhere else to eat.

This department shop in the middle of the main street in Llandudno has a timeless feel about it, or it is in desperate need of refurbishment, depending on one's view. One could imagine "Are you being served?" doing a seaside special here, with the staff discussing the latest event to befall Mrs Slocombe's pussy. Sadly the cafe is even more of a time warm. The decor may have been fashionable in the 1980s, but I doubt it's been updated since. Clean loos though.Never ask for the scrambled egg. My version was microwaved to an inch of its life and resembled lumps of rather firm latex. You're probably safe with soup and sandwiches though. I've had that combination a few times. What this place needs is a greater understanding of what is meant by catering and food preparation. Get rid of the microwave and use some of the pans they sell in the basement.A pity because the staff are delightful.

We found the food to be of a good standard and was reasonably quick even though it was quite busy. Competative prices, and the finishing touches with fresh cream were lovely. It was nice to see an old fashioned department store with quality products, and the old lift still being used made a nice touch.

I used to go to Clares a lot..loved the service, and the food was nice even if a fairly limited menu.it was always very very busy and we often had to queu to get a place...but we felt it was worth it...However..I had not been there for several years, and last Wednesday 6th November , I took my now partner there as a treat..(he does not like eating out but I felt Clares would be a turning point ) Wrong...It was not busy so we chose a seat easily..A fairly brusque waitress came over after a while and took our order, we waited three quarters of an hour for the meal to arrive, and since I saw it all being heated in a microwave I could not understand this delay...everything was soggy and overcooked, and the meat was something sort of re constituted, but worse..I had beef.and it smelled awfull..It had actually "gone off" I took it over to the cooking area ..where they just looked at me ,and said would I rather have the lamb,I said I would, more so as not to make a fuss, that was another 20 min wait, and it was pretty horrible,no apology offered and no refund on the bill...My partner now has a valid reason not to want to eat out............................

Visited on a busy Saturday afternoon, all staff I came across were very helpful and polite, visited the restaurant again standards were good the cream tea was of good standard and nicely presented, only little criticism is that not enough jam was given, but that's only my opinion! (No need for anyone to be out in the stocks)!! I have read the negative reviews and feel they have been written by people of a certain age! No disrespect! But!! Stop moaning its a department store and it's 2013 :)

We had lunch here earlier this week and although the quirky Art Deco decor enticed us in, the menu was disappointing. If you're not looking for anything more than a cheese or ham sandwich, you'll be fine but if you're after anything a bit more interesting, find somewhere else. The menu is uninspiring and the food quality was ok but nothing more. I didn't spend much time in the department store itself, mainly due to the shop assistants staring and looking like they were ready to pounce at any moment!

The trip up to the restaurant is in a 1930's Agatha Christie type lift, you are then taken to your seen and shown the menu.As it was late morning we decided to have a bacon sandwich and a coffee, they turned up and they were just as you would have at home, we are both fans of crispy bacon. Both the coffee and sandwich were fine, with just a small amount of salad.Loved it..

Don’t bother!Tired and worn décor, also tired and worn crockery, perfunctory staff and a rather plain menu. Although, price-wise this place represents the budget end of the range available locally, I would struggle to suggest that meant good value!

Very helpful and knowledgable staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. They offered to look after the purchase until we had finished shopping.

We just wanted drinks and snacks, so this seemed like it might suit. Luckily we were fine with the stairs, but these would be challenging to those less mobile. There is a lift, but it looked pretty antiquated - the sort that has cage doors. The decor in the restaurant area is very much French art posters all over every available wall, even in the toilets. All in all, rather busy on the eye! The staff were friendly enough although the service was quite disorganised. Cream cakes are displayed in a glass cabinet to tempt you, and one of our group was...however, his thick cream slice came with yet more cream piped on the side! Cheese and onion toasties were tasty and the accompanying salad garnish was appropriate, but not really topped with a slice of orange! All in all it was a satisfactory experience, but there was nothing special enough about the food or the service to make me want to brave the stairs for a repeat visit.

The first thing about Claires,Mostyn Street Llandudno to note is its one very quaint, yet utterly inadaquate lift. Its one of those cage-type lifts.VERY small and with a manual cage door you have to open and close yourself, and unless its closed properly after use, this lift wont go to other floors,so causing annoyance when users dont even bother to close the door after use,so if youve a disibility, avoid this store or stick to the ground floor,in summer, when tourists hit town, its a disaster. Now,if your into clothing for seniors, older styles, then this venue is ok for you.It does NOT do young!.Like its vintage lift,Claires has an old world feel.A hangover from bygone days..,
