Galleon Steakhouse in Chesterfield

We came here on Sunday to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had to pre order our meals as we were a large group which is absolutely fine. For dessert myself and my husband ordered the 'chocolate wreck' there was no description of what this was on the menu. When we were eating this I quickly realised the chocolate mousse contained alcohol. Now I don't drink alcohol as it has a bad effect on my mental health and my husband is over two years sober due to alcohol issues. My friend who also came with us often orders deserts off the adult menu for her young children but again would not have been aware that the mousse contained alcohol. We mentioned this to a young waiter who spoke with his manager she then sent him back to the table to explain that yes the dessert contained alcohol, we informed him we weren't happy as this was not documented on the menu. Again the young waiter went to his manager who was watching us from across the room and sent him back to us. You would think the manager would come directly to us due to the complaint. After asking her to come she stated that they don't have to state on the menu whether it contains alcohol as food is often cooked in it and we should have informed them prior that we can't have alcohol. No apology was given. Will not be going here again.

Horrendous customer service by management, a group of 20 booked in for a meal, we had a complaint that the pudding served contained alcohol in and was given to a recovering alcoholic nowhere on the menu does it state they have alcohol in puddings, they were only concerned when they thought one of the children had had some, we had a young waiter who was very informative and he was great, he went to explain to the manager our concern to her response she sent him back and said yes there is alcohol in the pudding we asked to speak with her she shrugged it off like it was nothing, never once did they apologise they were all discussing our table behind the bar and after that complaint not one staff member came over to offer anymore service never will I return to this pub a little customer service training is needed!!

We pre booked for 20 people and gave our order via the menus on the website. Two of my friends don’t drink, one due to medical reasons and the other is a recovering alcoholic. The puddings they ordered contained alcoholic! This was not described on the menu. We then notified a member of staff to check this to be told it did contain alcohol and basically - tough! We understand mistakes can be made but this was a very serious mistake and the lack of apology or to rectify the issue. Would not return

Wow now THIS is the place to go for a Sunday lunch, complete atmosphere as soon as you walk in, the staff are impeccable and the food?! The food is for the foodies out there, flavour town! WHAT a roast that was! ❤️

Possibly the worse dining experience I have ever had. Me and and my girlfriend returned here 3 years after having our first date here. We arrived here at 9pm on valentines day. By quarter past we had both received our drinks and ordered our food. By 20 to 9 we'd had enough of being sat waiting with our empty glasses so I asked for a drinks menu, to which nobody returned. I then asked another member of staff for a drinks menu, to which I got told someone will be over shortly to get you another drink. It now hits 10 o'clock at night, we'd had 1 one drink each, no food and no service. Finally we get to order our second drink at just gone 10, to which I ask where our food is as I spot the kitchen staff cleaning down. They had lost the ticket! In the space of an hour and 15 minutes not a single member of staff had noticed we were drinkless and foodless! I then got told by a waitress don't worry it'll only be a minute they've already cooked it, I can only guess they reheated both our meals as both steaks were overcooked. The manager offered very little sympathy or apology, we just got a shrug of the shoulders. I will never return here again and am disgusted at the level of service from what used to be a very pleasant restaurant. Very disappointed.

What ever you do don't bother with the takeaway from here! The service is shocking! We have dined her for many years and always enjoy the food, we even had takeaway through covid when the restaurant was closed but today the experience was awful. They cannot get a simple order right and it took two attempts and after that we gave up and had to go to the restaurant to get our refund. Not one apology came out of the staffs mouth and after I mentioned this to them they still could apologise. Simple shocking. We will never go back to the restaurant again. It appears that the restaurant has been taken over by a new staff team and what was a lovely place to eat is now awful. What a shame!!

Have no issues with paying higher end prices for food as long as the food lives up to it. Our table had a range of meals from the menu. The fillet steak and fillet steak kebab were more like rump than fillet, parts very chewy, whether not aged or straight out the fridge into the pan we don't know, but when paying £32 for 8oz fillet it needs to be better. The menus don't say what comes with a mix grill or seafood platter for some reason, so we asked the waitress and 1 item mentioned was gammon. When the mix grills arrived - no gammon, when we asked again got no response, when asked again waitress wasn't sure ? Sausage also seemed cheap on the Mix Grills and would expect a mushroom for £35 each so disappointing also. The Tomahawk steak was also a bit too chewy in places and had better. Three of our diners didn't have any issues with their meals, but 3 out of 7 diners isn't the best and slightly overshadowed a birthday celebration. Personally I was also a bit disappointed that the 3 draught lagers were all non-premium weak larger's. All in all wont be rushing back unfortunately.

We booked the Galleon for a club night out. 13 people all came away having had an excellent night.. super tasty food, delivered promptly.. a very well organised night and courteous staff who didn't intrude on our conversation.. can't thank you enough.

Went for a new year's eve meal with friends. Shared a variety of boards pictured, garlic bread tear and share with cheese, bread board & charcuterie board. All very nice, the chorizo in particular had a lovely kick to it. Most of us had steaks which were all lovely. Should note that most steaks do not include sauce in the price. Sauces are £4 which is a little steep, however the serving is very generous and you could comfortably share one between two. I had the 16oz ribeye which was a lovely cut and cooked perfectly with a rich bearnaise. Lovely place to eat for a special occasion. Staff were attentive and service was fast.

Simply the best steak house in Chesterfield

We have just had a takeaway delivered on Christmas Eve. We had a prawn cocktail starter then gammon and filet steak. The food was superb. Cooked perfectly and a very reasonable price. What a treat.

Had the mixed Grill, £35, the lamb and hand cooked chips were delicious, however a few things weren’t, black pudding was as thick as a door wedge and cold in middle, asked for medium rare, my “first” steak came medium to well done, and was really fatty, and my egg was solid, waitresses no where to be seen for a while so went to the bar to ask for a steak that’s cooked to my order, plus a dippy egg! They replaced the steak and egg, x 2 of each! The first steak was rare-medium, and the second was just right. The sausage tasted cheap and I was expecting better things from a steakhouse where a chef can get the order right, even more so at £35. We were the first ones in the restaurant, came to take drink order then was left for ages before they came to take food order, I had to go to the bar to complain, found 3 bar staff chatting around the corner, when cleared plates away after 11 minutes from finishing, was asked if wanted anything more, I replied with “just the bill” I ended up going to the bar to ask for the bill again, to see 4 staff chatting in the corner and ignoring me. Didn’t leave a tip as usually do as Poor service, and food wasn’t up to standard.

Fist time visiting with the family for Sunday lunch. Fantastic food and the portions huge! Great value for money.

Second time we've visited and the standards here remain high. Service is spot on, not rushed and not too slow. The food was cooked to perfection and well worth the money, we will visit again. FYI: Lobster and Prawn Cocktail, Seared Scallops, Venison with sides, Sirloin with sides... too full for dessert this time so we just had coffees.

Stayed at the Galleon Restaurant and Stakehouse Hotel. What a fantastic place to stay and we had brilliant meal the restaurant was probably one of the best we've ever eaten at, what a great menu, the staff were brilliant the food was excellent and plentiful. The accommodation was also nice and cosy our room was very clean really big, the continental breakfast is served just outside the bedrooms which is a really good idea there was a really good selection of cereals, fruit, toast and jams.

A lovely place to eat beautiful food, great service and a beautiful cooked 16oz sirloin steak with red wine gravy 😋 I definitely recommend eating here as the food was top draw! Great service from James and a nice stay above the restaurant a lovely weekend in Chesterfield

Absolutely first class, Five people in party every meal perfect and it included Three Steaks all cooked to varying degrees as ordered. Stayed in rooms overnight they are all a good size and spotlessly clean. As stated first class from check in to check out.

Celebrated at The Galleon for our daughter’s 18th. Party of 17 so we pre-ordered. The food was superb and all the meals came out together and piping hot. Service was great-we were well looked after and the birthday girl was made to feel special. Steak ordered medium rare. Cooked to perfection. Atmosphere not great as it wasn't busy but it was Sunday teatime and we chose that tone because if our young children. The waiter was very child friendly and entertained our children.

I grew up in Chesterfield, and hadn't lived here for ten years before moving back in mid-2022. I had never heard of The Galleon before making the reservation on this occasion, and it is a sad thing that I hadn't experienced this restaurant until now....

Dined here several times and has always been good but tonight’s visit was by far the best! Great service, top marks for all the food we had, great quality & cooked to perfection! As always the restaurant was spotlessly clean with a great environment!

We stayed for one night. We didn’t eat here, however the food looked beautiful and I did hear customers commenting on how nice the food was. Our room was perfect. The young lady who checked us in was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend and stay again in the future.

Went for lunch today with my daughter. This was my first visit and it definitely won’t be my last. I had the pork Sunday dinner and my daughter had the hanging fillet steak skewer and both were cooked to perfection and delicious. I had the sticky toffee pudding after and it was by far the nicest I’ve ever had. Prices were reasonable and all the staff were attentive and friendly. What more can you ask for. They replaced the steak when we complained which was better but not wow, but there was no discount or complimentary drinks or deserts by way of apology for putting a dampener on the whole evening. When the replacement arrived the waitress said there would be a discount from the bill as an apology but when the bill came there was no discount and when challenged the waitress said “no discount as I went above and beyond with the replacement”. How is it above and beyond to give you what you ordered in the first place. Plus we had the sides separate to the meat. The whole meal ended up being disjointed. Money is hard earned and this was well below what it should have been. This is supposed to be an upmarket steakhouse but in reality it was not. We have been in the past and it was far superior then. Your hard earned money is better spent elsewhere. UPDATE: in response to owner comment we most certainly did not swear at the waitress and we are very unhappy they have shared my wife’s job. Very unprofessional and in fact suspect is against GDPR laws.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but having dined there last night with my family on my son's birthday, I can only say I was disappointed. Very high expectations based on reviews from others, but 4 out of the 5 steaks ordered were flavourless and not at all tender. And we're all very well aware of what a good steak should be. In anticipation of the owner's potential response, no, I didn't give the staff any feedback as they were rather disinterested. Took 30 minutes for them to take our order (when I eventually asked them to). Then a list of poor service standards from there on. With only 4 tables in the restaurant occupied and 3 serving staff, I struggle to see why this is challenging. The staff did explain to some potential customers that they could have a long wait for food due to the demand for 'Just Eat', which was very apparent. Not sure if this was the reason for our experience, but either way it fell short.

The food is 5 stars so the review has to be 5 stars, althouh I was initially charged £5 extra for a drink that I didn’t order. That’s why the service is only rated with three stars. But the cooks and the food deserve the five stars. What a nice surprise at a deserted Chesterfield on an august monday!

Last year we went it was excellent. This year sadly not. Halibet was very dry looked like it had been left under the grill. My friends steak was quiet fatty. Would not return. Must be a new chef

Well where to start, we ordered starters of the tempura chicken with sweet chill and crab cakes. The chicken was tough and a bit dry, and the batter was very hard, so was not a good start. When ordering the mains I asked the waitress what the steak was that the guy on the next table was having and was told it was a rib eye which it wasn't. I also queried the contents of the long island ice tea cocktail that was listed on the drinks menu as I have had a lot in my time and it wasn't in my opinion how it should be made. The waitress went to ask her managers who said they add triple sec but it wasn't listed, and it normally has tequila, which wasn't there. For the mains I ordered the rib eye and cod. Cod looked OK, rib eye was a bit over cooked. Overall it was OK but in comparison to a lot if other places I have been it doesn't stand out for example if you were to try smoke bbq in Sheffield and compare. This is just my take in things and of course everyone has there own opinion so by all means try the place.

The food, ambience and dining experience were second to none. My friend complimented the chef on his cooking of a rare steak , saying it was the best he'd ever had. My compliments go to James Gaunt who clearly knows how to manage a superb restaurant. Thank you so much for a fabulous evening xx

One of the best steakhouses I've been to. An upmarket feel, with excellent food to match. Food - Fantastic food, easily the best steak around. We had various other sides which were equally as good. Desserts are tasty and excellently presented. Service - Generally good, only knocked one star on service, as I've experienced friendlier staff who have gone the extra step to make you feel welcome - that being said service is still great and attentive. Atmosphere - It's a nice upmarket atmosphere without making you feel out of place. Would recommend and return.

£3.65 for a lime and soda is just plain greedy. Food was meh, rocket wasn't fresh, yellow and wilted in a ball in the middle of the plate. Nice pesto on the undergrilled tomato was different. I few chips just under undercooked, I think they finished cooking themselves at the table. Steak was over cooked on one side, nicer on the thick side, nothing to write home about, it's meat put on a fire. Diane sauce super watery, tested good. Service was attentive but rushed at the end, with the check being bought over after the desert menu, without us even asking, we didn't order anything else as we saw the price of the drinks! £7+ for 2 lime and sodas. It's alright, definitely propped up by the people who stay, didn't realise it was actually attached to rooms upstairs, guess that's where most of the business and reviews come from.

I booked a two night stay in one of the four double rooms above the steak house restaurant our first night we ate in the restaurant and the food and service was faultless friendly and helpful, the room was spacious and well presented the ensuite was spotless modern and spacious, The location was ideal for walking into town it's literally across the road overall experience definitely 10/10.

I came here because I read the reviews The only thing I can say is this place is merely a staek house from the food to the waiters every thing was cheap and nasty with no flavour our quality that you receive anywhere else i who'd not recommend this place in any way very disappointed last night..

Amazing is the first word that comes to mind. Had a large table booked for a birthday meal and the staff were great. The food was amazing, had children and fussy eaters and everyone was very happy with their meals and very full at the end! Will be returning soon

I will give one star only because of the service. The food is indeed good but it takes an extremely long time to have it delivered at your table. I have ordered a starter and I had waited 40 minutes for it, ice cream for my mother but it never came however it was added on the bill. Staff are ok but the wait make the whole experience unpleasant. And seeing how the owner answers the complaints, makes me think he has no idea of what customer service is, instead of turning a negative review into a positive one, you choose to use exclamation signs and take no accountability for your staff’s errors. Irrespective of how many people were in the restaurant at the time I was in, it’s your business, your passion, learn from mistakes, and you are definitely right, a place where the owner insults people isn’t the place for anyone for that matter no matter what you serve inside.

We visited The Galleon Steak House for my mums birthday as a party of 5. The waiter who served us was brilliant, really accommodating when we were waiting for the 5th member of our party to arrive and especially when my mum accidentally turned off their computer/music! The food was brilliant, really tasty and fresh! There is plenty of choice on the menu too and also plenty of drink options. We each order slightly differing levels of "doneness," and everyone was happy with how they arrived. All in all we had an absolutely lovely night, plenty of good food and brilliant service, we would definitely come here again!
