We attended the restaurant for my birthday the 15 December. I’ve never felt so unwelcome and felt being rushed, the restaurant was part full. The waiter took our food and drinks order. Starters arrived no drinks, after finishing our starters, we asked where our drinks were, the waiter forgot to order them. We paid the bill including a service charge, no thank you nor thank you for your custom, no apology for the drinks delay. We were out of the door within 1 hour. Poor poor service. I will never

Honestly one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had, made even worse by the fact that it was my birthday. Me and my group of 5 walked into the restaurant and were eventually given a table for an hour. We collectively decided not to order much as the staff emphasised we needed to be gone before 5. Multiple waitresses and waiters were overheard badmouthing my group and I for our small order while one of us was near the bar area. I also looked up during our meal to see more staff laughing at the bar while staring at our table. Was not expecting high school bully treatment. We also received multiple side looks during our time. Waiting for someone to take our order took over 20 minutes, and asking for someone to get our bill took very long also as waiters seemed to purposely ignore our calls for the bill. Despite the small order and limited time to eat, we were all told to order a drink by force; which was shocking, as the prices did not match the quality or sizes of the drinks. Was also shocking how one of party ordered a bottle water for them individually, yet it was shared around between all of us…despite the waiter saying we all had to order individually? The food we ordered was almost tasteless and sad looking. When we left, we walked past a group of women who immediately were greeted and offered to have their coats taken; which was a stark contrast to how we were greeted. Will NEVER come back here again; and I advice that people think twice before considering here.

Big booking, clearly understaffed, didn't bring mains to some of our party, didn't bring veg/potatoes at all and given the food was all pre-ordered days before, there is really no excuse. To top it off the staff were argumentative regarding the issues with our party and each other and tried to absolve themselves of any ownership of the issues and no apology. VERY POOR !! Food we did get was average

Throwing an A4 folder in front of someone when there is barely space to read the menu let alone cross reference the menu items against the HUGE FOLDER and then looking at the menu to find the items you can actually have is not my idea of a lovely chilled dining experience. IF YOU HAVE ANY ALLERGIES INCLUDING NEEDING TO BE GLUTEN FREE AVOID THIS RESTAURANT. Staff were absolutely lovely even if it did take them a long time to finally come over but their policies and procedures for food preferences need to be bought into the twentieth century. It's equivalent to if there were a fire bringing someone the fire procedure manual rather than guiding them professionally to the nearest fire exit.

I do NOT expect to be BAD-MOUTHED by a member of staff, on leaving,when I have just paid £109 for TWO people - do you think we are deaf? My meluzzo (hake) was beautiful, but my husband's veal was bland and dry, and his cocktail was served in a badly chipped glass, that admittedly was replaced, but at £13 per cocktail, should never have made it to the table. I would have been happy to return for the very good fish cookery, but now I know with what disdain customers are viewed, never, never again

Our food was really tasty and portion sizes just right but my tortellini was lukewarm. The interior of the restaurant is quite striking, and the staff were really friendly and welcoming,but like other reviews I do think the service needs some tweaking. Although it was a quiet lunchtime visit, the wrong main courses were brought out, and returned, then I was given the wrong dessert. Because we were off to the theatre and needed to leave, I ate it. The waitress waited until my last mouthful to apologise for the mistake. When a service charge is added to your bill this does seem a shame

We were in Manchester to see a concert at the nearby Bridgwater hall so happened upon this restaurant as we were looking for somewhere to eat before the show. We love San Carlos on King St W so we’re expecting much of the same. The place has a nice buzz but as we were walk-ins and it was also a Friday we were taken upstairs. The restaurant itself was in a slightly weird conference style centre but nevertheless the ambience was nice as we entered the room. We both ordered Lasagne which these days (anywhere) can be a bit hit and miss as the plates arrive sizzling but the lasagne can be stone cold in the middle! Anyhow we decided to risk it and as soon as it was placed on the table we checked the temp and thankfully it was piping hot. So as we were stirring we were both thinking er…where is the meat? I am honestly not exaggerating when I say we couldn’t find any at all! It was tasty but if you can imagine just pasta and tomato sauce that’s all it was. I was going to say something but we didn’t have much time and my husband said look it tastes fine let’s just eat and go. So we did but when I went to pay (nearly £70 for 2 lasagne 2 Garlic bread 1 beer 1 wine) I mentioned about whether they had given us a veggie version as there was no meat and the waiter said well why didn’t you tell me which is fair enough. I declined the service charge but left feeling ripped off and disappointed unfortunately.

My favourite restaurant in Manchester. Lovely decor. Cloakroom available. Very clean. Soft mood lighting. No annoying music in background. Large open bar. Open floor plan. Extensive menu. All dishes arrived beautifully presented. The staff are profession, smartly dressed and very polite. Many good food recommendations are offered. Service is good. Would recommend this restaurant to everybody.

Booked dump as it looked nice and is part of San Carlo chain staff were excellent food though was disappointing to say the least. On a busy weekend they had run out of oysters by 8pm Saturday alternative starters were ok 1x calamari and 1x chilli prawns not great but just ok. Mains sadly were inedible 1x carbonara Which had clearly been left standing because it was nearly warm and had set! And a lasagne that was probably one of the worst I’ve tried both meals were so heavily salted they couldn’t be eaten and were sent back alternatives were offered but we cut our loses and left. Initially nothing was knocked off the bill but after a short debate the price of both mains were removed . Overall very disappointed and the experience ruined what was supposed to be a special evening

Went in to celebrate my son’s graduation and what a lovely place it turned out to be. We received a warm welcome and the decor and ambiance was first rate. After being shown to our table the waiting staff were very helpful and friendly, the interaction with our group, including my grandson, was absolutely amazing. The menu was extensive, although not a lot of choice for vegi/vegan, and when the food arrived it was served hot and was delicious. I can thoroughly recommend the oysters and frutti di mare and my wife who is vegan had the penne arrabbiata. All in all the evening was great with the staff going above and beyond to make sure it was an unforgettable night.

We went here to celebrate my husbands graduation and it was by far the best experience we’ve ever had at a San Carlo. In particular the staff were just incredible. Our 4 year old son (who never sits still) was entertained the entire time. They were so attentive, kind and accommodating. We live outside of Manchester now but we will definitely travel back regularly to visit. Highly recommend.

Terrible Experience – Food Poisoning! I recently dined at Fumo and had an awful experience that I can’t ignore. Shortly after my meal, I started feeling extremely unwell, and it quickly escalated to food poisoning. I had to spend the night sick and in pain, which completely ruined my weekend. The food itself was subpar, and I should have known better than to continue eating after noticing some signs of poor hygiene in the restaurant. I reached out to the management to express my concerns, but they were dismissive and did not seem to care about the health risks involved. I won’t be returning, and I advise others to think twice before eating here. It’s just not worth the risk

The worst experience of dining out I have ever had in my life. My meal had a black hair in it that looked like a pubic hair. We where completely disgusted by this and I said that I didn't want to have it replaced as it put me off completely. Myself and my Mum had agreed to share our mains and was going to half each of them. After this I didn't want to eat anything. My Mum finished her meal and then the waiter brought me over my meal again, I explained I can't eat it now as I have been put of. He said sorry and said please eat it which made me feel really uncomfortable as a customer. Why would I want to eat food that I am worried is not sanitary. To also make matters worse my Mum had finished her food so it wasnt like we could enjoy our meal together and have a lovely time like we planned. When the bill came the only removed meal was my meal. To be honest I was so shocked the whole bill was not wiped given the fact we had such a poor experience and the whole situation ruined the evening. I asked the waiter if she thinks it is fair we have to pay, she said they have removed the cost of the meal with the hair in it. I explained my feelings about this and said that regardless of the meal with the hair being removed the experience has been ruined and I don't feel it's fair to charge us. She sent over the male waiter and he then explained we had eaten the other food and therefore we must pay. He showed absolutely no understanding or consideration for what had happened at all. My Mum told him we are happy to pay for the drinks and starter but the two main meals should be removed of the bill as we had plan to share food and the whole experience had been ruined. He didn't want to do this and it was only because people where now looking over to the table he agreed to do this. When he returned he said 'happy now' and I said no I am not. He then looked at me with disappointment and shock as if I should be impressed that an establishment that is so lucrative and well known thinks it's acceptable to still charge someone after serving food with a hair in it. He then proceeded to tell me that this has not happened for over 8 months Asif this should reassure me about the level of hygiene. This is not McDonald's and it should never happen. The whole evening was ruined and just left a really bad impressed of the business for me. I have gone to San Carlo in Liverpool for years and go 1s a month and never ever had an issue. This experience has made me never want to put another penny in the business again and I will also be telling everyone I know how it made me feel and saying they should never come to the restaurant. Don't let the nice decor and name fool you.. this place is dirty and unclean. Take close note of the light shades when you look up and the amount of dust on them. The whole place needs a deep clean and they need lessons on how to manage disappointment customers without trying to transfer a level of guilt onto the customer for being very upset about their poor experience. I am simply disgusted. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Absolutely awful, do not book here. If you are expecting the usual san carlo standard this is not it. The garlic bread was just bread with lots of oil, the arinchi was just plain boiled rice, the meatballs were watery and mushy and the linguine was awful. All the food was bland and tasteless. Would not recommend.

San Carlo on King street is one of my favourite restaurants, but Fumo is nothing like it. I will never go back there again. Our last night in Manchester was made so special by Fumo by San Carlo. A warm, friendly welcome at the door though we had no reservation. Our taste sensation journey began with prawns that lead to our mains of lobster ravioli and seafood spaghetti. Washed down with delicious cocktails. Finished with a delectable tasting plate of desserts and a nutcracker cocktail. The service was fun without being rude and attentive without being intrusive. It was one of my WORST experience ever in life. I ordered spagetti with lobster. Spagetti itself was semi raw. When I turned lobster I saw empty shell and there was absolutely zero meat inside shell. Beleive me ABSOLUTELY nothing !!!!!!!!! It was only for decoration and only 2, 3 small pieces of meat was mixed with spagetti. Staffs were not looking after people, always in rush. Becayse I was one person they asked me to sit in bar not restaurant and when I refused they offered me a table in dead spot while they had more available table. When I decided to leave then they offered me better table. Food was served after 30min from ordering. I ordered champagne they gave me prosecco and I had to change it. Somrthing was wrong in my bill and day after when I came to correct it he told sorry madam we cant do correction we closeed system and what ever is for last night is locked. All in all wasn't good experience I spent over 60 pound and didn't enjoy. Its mess, stay away from them. The other thing I didn't like was how bad they treated black man beside my table and he left. They are really annoying. I believe the low rate in Google review is what they deserve

a group of 9 of us attended on Friday night. We were seated and my husbands chair was so close to another table he was constantly bumped into all night by staff passing and not one apologised. . our waitress was frankly downright miserable and very abrupt to the point that my husband actually asked if she was alright. the food was average at best and in my opinion extremely overpriced. When we paid our bill the waitress cane back at the end to say we were 11p short despite the fact they had worked out the bill! it was embarrassing to be stopped as we were leaving to pay a measly 11p on a bill that was already over £500 especially given that we'd had poor service.

Disappointing visit, really overrated restaurant chain. The food was good but nothing special considering the price. The service was poor, took away plates before finished eating, got several orders wrong, staff were quite rude at times, almost arrogant which was a bit ironic. We even called up to have a surprise drink at the table for when we arrived (occasion for someone with us). Paid for it, arrived and there was no record of it at all on the booking. Removed from the bill which is fair but I don’t feel like it was a tough ask.

Myself and 7 friends visited Fumo during a recent trip to Manchester to celebrate my 50th birthday. The staff were fantastic and I got a complimentary pudding and ‘Happy Birthday’ was sung to me! Our meal was great, we all enjoyed it and the drinks. One waiter in particular was great fun and posed for a photo with us! The decor is also very nice. All in all, I’d definitely recommend Fumo!

So... Lovely setting but no atmosphere, no music ect, just as we were leaving the lights came down which gave a good ambience. Food... We opted for the sea food sharer starter prawns, calamari and scallops. everything was battered and deep fried which was not explained on the menu. Such lovely delicate foods in my opinion ruined. Only 1 prawn and 1 scallop each the rest was a plate of calamari. Mains... I went for the veil escolop unless you order separate sides you have a plate of meat again not explained on the menu. The saving graise was the pudding the turimusu was delicious. And the wine was good too. Table for 2, 3 courses a bottle of wine £188.00 wouldn't revisit but a lasting experience probably for the wrong reasons.

Probably the busiest time we could pick, therefore service was a bit slower and it was noticeable that staff were rushing , felt like they were undermanned, nevertheless it did not spoil the evening. But what a place to eat !!! Fantastic atmosphere, beautiful restaurant decor, and Italian food possibly the best in Manchester! To whom this may concern, I would like to start by saying I have heard numerous amazing reviews about San Carlo Fumo, so I was eager to try it for myself however, I was severely disappointed with the service I received. I booked a table at 5pm for myself and 4 for my friends for my 18th birthday celebrations. The woman who greeted us at the door was lovely and gave us a warm welcome and seated us to our table. Following that, when asked for our drinks orders, only three of us were asked if we wanted something to drink and the other two members of my party were given no interest what so ever. It took half an hour for a gin and lemonade and a jug of water to be brought to our table, with another 10 minutes for us to wait for out food order to be taken. I can appreciate that the restaurant was not exactly quiet, yet other tables that were seated around us were being served food and drinks before us. I work in hospitality myself and I assume your bar and kitchen work the same, who ever is seated first gets their food and drinks made first. At 6:10 our food finally arrived, cold, and the pasta was sloppy, whilst all us were served our dishes, one of my friends was waiting an additional 5 minuets for her cold carbonara to arrive. Non of us were asked if we would like parmesan or black pepper on our food, which is arguably the best part of coming to an Italian restaurant. Not once did we get asked if the food was up to standard, or if we wanted any more drinks. In my attempt to asked for our water jug to be filled, the waiter sped off in the opposite direction. I am truly disappointed at the professionalism at this restaurant, it made me feel quite deflated for my birthday, as all the staff seemed to be dementors. I encountered smiles and manners from 2 members of staff the whole time I was there - the woman who greeted us and the waiter with split hair dye. I was sat next to a group of women who were having a bridal party and seemed to be having amazing service. I do not know if your staff were being rude on purpose to a group of young girls, however the attitude we received, was something quite else. I hope this email will reach your staff members so they can learn how to smile, after all, it is the most important part of a work uniform!

I really really tried liking it but honestly a lot let me down starting with the service. The receptionist seemed like she was having a bad day, I wasn’t greeted, she wasn’t even happy to be there. When I initially booked, I left a note saying it’s my anniversary and I would want a nice table. I was given the worst table in there, in a corner, by the till and cleaning products. The whole resteraunt was empty I could have been seated anywhere! The man who served us also wasn’t as friendly, he didn’t do anything wrong. He just had no enthusiasm or happiness. Almost like WE wasn’t wanted there. However, there were 2 waiters who were amazing. I wish I got their names, but they were super friendly. One was skinny and tall and the other was slightly shorter with a healthy build. I’ve been to Italian resteraunts before but the food at san carlo Fumo was a bit disappointing, the penne pasta was just a can of tomatoes used for their sauce, sprinkled with cheese. No flavour, just the tanginess of raw tomatoes.

So me and my husband went here and we asked if everything is halal as to which they said yes after asking multiple times, when we asked for our dishes, two of mine were not actually halal one had alcohol and one served pork and had me questioning if this place even is halal? and as Muslims we should not eat here if serving pork but we did ask if everything keyword everything is halal. So this made me very uneasy as to why they said everything they should of said no not everything… but on the plus side they was very honest what was in their dishes without even having to ask, which i respect and was happy about. But if you are a muslim there is better food out there and better options, as you don’t know if cross contamination is happening in the kitchen with non halal meat, pork or alcohol, And if the Manager sees this, do you have a HMC certificate for halal food? And the food isn’t all that. But overall nice staff and nice clean place.

As always I had a great dinner at Fumo restaurant. Once again the manager Pietro was very kind and he made my birthday celebration really special and unique. The entire staff lead by Pietro is amazing. Last time I have been in, Giovanni was assigned to my table and he was very kind and friendly. Strongly recommend, a true Italian experience in Manchester city centre.

Myself , my 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters had a very good meal at Fumo last night. The staff were attentive and made us feel very welcome, especially the 2 waitresses and Ciprian. He definitely made our first visit very special. As I told him I was apprehensive as had read poor reviews of the attitude of some staff. Definitely will go again .

Me and my daughter ate here before a show. Starter came out really quick. It was cold and aioli was missing. The main was the mixed fish and it was like warm and no taste at all. Don’t chefs know how to season. Nothing on it it was bland. The staff were running around like headless chicken. Best thing about it was the wine I chose. Wouldn’t eat there again

Really poor experience tonight. We were told there would be a wait for a table (which was absolutely fine and we agreed). We sat, ordered, starters took a while to come out but not too bad. Then we waited 1.5 hours between starter and mains. It was only when we asked how long it would be, that it came out 5 mins later, no apology. Food was nice (not worth the wait) but a dish was missing. When we ordered the dish for the 2nd time, it still didn't come. The service was really poor, waited ages to order another drink, really frowny staff who seemed inconvenienced every time you asked for something e.g. A steak knife for a steak, a drink. No check back for food, asking us how anything was etc. We spent a lot of money and weren't happy so complained (politely) . We were told by the server that it wasn't her fault and that everybody was complaining about the wait. She said 'in my opinion, it's bad management'. No apology. She said she'd take the service charge off but I don't feel this is adequate given it's optional. When speaking to the manager, he said he had warned us about the wait. We emphasised that we were told about wait for a table, and even a wait for food would surely mean less than 1.5 hours? He eventually apologised and knocked 10% off which we were grateful for. However, still a poor experience and wouldn't recommend. It was busy but they had 4 staff on the floor and still could have forced a bit more friendliness in place of the scowls.

10/10 food and service, but above all front of house and the staff are exceptional!! We first tried to dine at another Italian across the road and were treated so poorly. We crossed over to Fumo (without a reservation at 4pm post Manchester Half) and were not expecting such a warm, lovely and KIND welcome. The older gentlemen at the front of house took my suitcase, laughed and joked with us and seated us at such a beautiful table. We were all SO thrilled. The food was delicious 10/10 for everything - I had the lobster ravioli - would recommend, and the tiramisu doesn’t have alcohol and is DELICIOUS. Even if the food was awful (which it was NOT) I would come back based on hospitality alone. You guys nailed it, Grazie Millie! 🫶🏼🍝

My friend and I Came here on Thursday for first time and there was a gentleman waiter Ciprian who made the experience one of the happiest in a restaurant , he was so attentive made us feel so welcome nothing too much trouble . Came today two adults one child had a small issue with the steak been undercooked but then sent out burnt but the front of house staff were amazing. Attended a private investment dinner hear, moved from San Carlo due to a flood. Before we sat down we stood around for 10 minutes before someone turned up to take drink orders, despite there being a bar in the room. When the first course arrived it contained sections of Avocado. These were old, brown and actually rotten in the centre and inedible. The rest was bland and tasteless. The main was some sort of flattend chicken covered in a tomato sauce, just that on the plate. The presentation was paused for us to eat, but many were asking if there was anything else. Nothing arrived so we all began, and the gentleman next to me had finished his meal when bowls of a simple salad arrived. I laughed and said " they will probably bring out chips when we have all finished". In fact the potatoes did arrive at the end of the meal! One of the organisers ( one of the biggest insurers in the UK) told me they had paid a fortune to hold the event at San Carlo. They were furious and after a working life of these events I can honestly say it was the worst venue I have ever experienced.I have not rated atmosphere as we were in a private room, but not a good business plan to treat a major company and a room of business people in this way.

Fumo was a great choice for our group of more than 65 people. The asked us to make our dining covers in advance which was a good idea. often for big groups the service is lacking, but Fumo did a great job of staffing our event. We had a private dining area on the second floor that was beautiful but we did not feel isolated.

To begin, once we sat down we were immediately rushed to order drink and food. Staff made it apparent they were eager to get us out asap. Food came suspiciously quickly, with the pasta seeming undercooked, or potentially microwaved?( considering the price, not expected) The main waiter was not only rushing us, but was unfriendly and impolite, barely speaking to us when ordering, coming across judgy. The overall experience was uncomfortable, and found being a younger couple, we were treated differently to those around us (older and clearly spending a lot more). We don’t recommend, and won’t be coming again .

Fabulous Italian restaurant within walking distance from Deansgate train station. We had a company event for circa 36 colleagues and were catered for on their upper floor, which we had to ourselves. They provided place names and our pre selected menu choices on all tables... it's the little things that matter. 😉😊👍

Webt for dinner for a friend's birthday, service was absolutely tremendous. Our waiter was brilliant, though I can't remember his name. The mixed grill meal was not up to par however for one of the group members; very small portion, not very diverse and was costing a fortune for nothing; it was around £30. Other meals were well prepared and flavouful throughout, from starter to main, every bite was glorious! Otherwise would recommend visiting.

Beautiful food and lovely staff, we came in just before the kitchens had closed due to being at an event at the AO Arena on a Friday evening and they were so accommodating, and the food was as gorgeous as ever. Fresh homemade pasta for the Ravioli Aragosta and dough for the calzone. Huge langoustines for the Fritto Misto. Disappointed to see the bad reviews on here, these guys don’t deserve it, if you’re going to come here , order true Italian - you won’t be disappointed! Thank you so much.

Seems like a really nice restaurant but unfortunately didn’t get to try the food. We took our daughter and her friend here for my daughter’s birthday. We sat for 40 minutes and nobody even came to offer us any water or drinks. We asked for tap water at the bar and hung around for service but unfortunately we had plans at 8 after arriving at 6 so after waiting 40 minutes to be offered drinks we found it unlikely that we would have fit 3 courses in in the time we had left. It’s a shame as we were all really looking forward to the food.

We came here tonight for my daughter’s 15th birthday she loves pasta and lasagne so thought this would be perfect. Our booking was for 6pm perfect as we had a fun activity booked at 8pm. we was a bit early 5.50 and was asked if we wanted to sit at the bar or sit down. We sat down at our table 6.15 we had to go to the bar to ask for our own water for the table, 6.20 a waiter came over and asked if we wanted menus I said No we have already been waiting to order for 30 mins. He took 2 wine glasses of the table and then we was left again for a further 10 minutes with no drink order or food order. All in all we waited 40 mins for any acknowledgment and that was only when we got up to leave. Lovely atmosphere but didn’t get to enjoy it. Ended up at Archie’s better customer service and amazing food.

We were shocked by the bad service which just seemed to get worse as the meal went on. Even trying to pay seemed like a burden to them and trying to talk to anyone working there was an impossible task, not because they were busy because they didn’t care to listen. A simple question like asking for dessert menus (after waiting 30 minutes for one) they ignored us to our face and turned around unbothered. It’s such a shame because the food was nice but to have such rude and unfriendly service was a waste of our time and money. I wish we’d gone somewhere else that appreciated their customers and I’d definitely avoid San Carlo in the future if they treat their customers with such little respect.

We love visiting Fumo when we are in Manchester. Meet and greet is always welcoming and the service is very professional. Food is superb, cooked fresh and outstanding taste. Would recommend Fumo and any of the other San Carlo restaurants in Manchester, just wish we had one where we live.

Came to this restaurant to get food whilst coming to see the markets. Not much in the way of atmosphere, weird little stools to sit on without backs, order is via a QR code (but asks you to pay and tip before you’ve actually had any service). Food and drink came at wildly different times, and the pasta was…not good. Lukewarm and chewy, like it had been made a couple of days ago and microwaved. Would not come here again.
