Best Italian restaurant in Manchester? Probably yes! The place is very elegant, nice, clean and well-kept. The food is very good, well served and well presented. The service is also good and the staff is really professional and friendly. Loredana is definitely the best server ever you can ever. Definitely a nice place to go

Underwhelming food at overwhelming prices.

Authentic little Italian with a lovely courtyard seating area. We stopped by for lunch without booking and enjoyed excellent food and service. The sun was shining as well!

Was very disappointed took my partner here on Saturday afternoon and had a starter for two people which was advertised on the menu as £15 didn't realise until the bill came that it was per person 😳 for main course we both had a calazone pizza when it came it was over cooked and 90% of it was dough with the smallest bit of filling 😡 so shall not be recommending your restaurant to anyone

Ciprian was our waiter....totally awesome. Food was great, service was great. Good laughs and a great attitude! I'll be back...in 2 years when I return to Manchester again!

We were really looking forward to trying Fumo, but unfortunately, the experience was a letdown from start to finish. Both carbonaras arrived congealed, clearly left sitting under a heat lamp while other dishes were being prepared. One had nearly all the bacon while the other had barely any, and both were far too salty — we each managed only a third before giving up. It seemed like they might’ve been cooked together and just split unevenly. The chicken Voldastano was just as disappointing — burnt on top, dry inside, and the sauce had completely soaked into the breadcrumbs making them soggy. The cheese was already hard by the time it reached us, which made it obvious the dish had been sat out. For £24, I expected far better quality and at least one side dish included. We did order a side of baby potatoes, but they were swimming in oil and only just lukewarm, adding to the feeling that food was being left sitting around before service. The prices across the board felt completely unjustified — particularly the meatballs, which were £19 for just four small meatballs and a handful of dry pasta. It honestly felt like a rip-off. The garlic bread with cheese was overly oily and limp, and even something as simple as the oyster mignonette didn’t taste fresh or balanced. To top it all off, the layout of the restaurant made for an uncomfortable evening — staff were constantly squeezing past our chairs and bumping into us due to the cramped seating. It also felt like we were sitting practically on top of the neighbouring table. Trying to get the bill was another challenge. We caught the eye of four different staff members — all of whom looked at us and kept walking. The only person who actually stopped and helped was a young lady with short hair — thank you to her. Sadly, this is what often happens when a big chain tries to pump out too many locations — the quality drops and the experience suffers massively. Definitely won’t be returning. If you want an authentic Italian experience, read the reviews and save your time- go to Vincenzo Trattoria.

Went tonight for the fourth time and the food was extremely poor and mostly cold and bland, we were totally gutted. Ordered the risotto which I've had multiple times and each time it's been a huge portion except this time it felt like they'd split the usual sized portion between the 3 of us and it was luke warm at best and there was very little taste of cheese or truffle. Gutted. Ordered seafood spaghetti again arrived cold so mostly left uneaten lots of empty clam shells but no clams. There was a chicken calzone ordered that was devoid of chicken and was 3 inches thick in places of just dough and almost impossible to chew it was that tough. Same with the lobster ravioli it was tough to eat. Tried to order a dozen oysters but they didn't have them. I'll give them the 1 star as the starters were spot on just a shame that all the mains were all so poor, come on Fumo you can do much better than you did tonight. It'll be the last time I ever eat there as they say vote with your feet, to add we went round the corner to black sheep coffee to have coffee and I bought a ham sandwich because I was still hungry due to the small portion of Risotto I received.

After having my birthday dinner ruined by the miserable staff and bad food at Giovannis we stepped into San Carlos for dessert ! I originally wanted to eat at San Carlos but sadly they stopped serving spaghetti au vongole so we had to go to Giovannis!!! Never again. The staff at San Carlos are so friendly and happy and helpful the ambiance was great and they turned around my birthday disappointment and made my evening special and fun! They even sang a fabulous rendition of happy birthday to me 🥳💝😘 they had so much energy and attention for every single table they served and nothing was too much trouble! Thank you all for your care and attention 😘

Warm welcome , our second time after visiting The Palace. Just as good as our first time. Fantastic staff & food. We will definitely return again - thank you for the birthday cake and sing song for my dad / Grandad !

The welcome and service throughout the meal was exceptional, couldn't be faulted. The food was perfect, especially the risotto which was served in a most unusual way.

The sign of a good restaurant is when everyone at the table literally cleans their plate. This was the case for the six of us at Lunch today 11th April. Compliments to the Maitre D who attended to us in a very friendly helpful manner. The food, Starters and Mains, were delicious and importantly came to the table hot. This meal was a total success and not one of us could find anything to give a bad comment. I will not hesitate to visit this restaurant again.

We came last summer and it was fabulous….. to say we felt like an inconvenience to the staff this evening was an understatement …. Food was average… disappointing… we won’t return.

We called in Friday evening on the off chance. Lucky we could get a table. The restaurant was super busy and had a great ambiance. The service was exceptional. Every member of the staff was super attentive really chatty and friendly. The food was excellent. It was freshly cooked and super tasty. The wines were great also. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Food choice not as good as it used to be

Food was okay , nowhere near as nice as the normal san carlo , staff seemed absolutely rushed off their feet so of course meaning their service couldn’t be as good. We ordered garlic bread , the bottom was very burnt and gamberoni which was pretty nice no complaints there. Then a carbonara and gamber pesto pasta for mains, the pasta was okay , meatballs I did enjoy. The toilet absolutely stank and needed a clean which I’d expect more from as a higher end restaurant. Wish the service was a little better from the rest of the staff , music was decent.

Had the absolute best time here last night! The food was delicious and the service was out of this world. The staff there are so attentive and friendly - special shoutout to Giovanni who made our evening with his funny quirks and compliments! It was my friend’s birthday so on the night the manager offered to give her a dessert and to sing which topped everything off. Can’t wait until the next time I’m here! 😍. Comedy of errors! Forgot my starter, ended up waiting for almost 10mins, so my wife ate her's. Main course was amazing, 12oz ribeye, made a mistake going with fries, should've had the potatoes (guy next to me had those, they looked awesome). In the meantime a server smashed a couple of glasses. Couldn't decide on dessert so we had a medley of desserts to share and a shot of limoncello each, nice. Then another dropped tray of bottles, same server I think. Overall the food was amazing, service was abit poor but it was Saturday night and restaurant was busy.

I would avoid at all costs. The food was genuinely horrific. I ordered the Spaghetti frutti di mare (seafood pasta) which had about 4 pieces of seafood in it, and was mostly just a dry red pasta served lukewarm. The pizza was also served cold and it felt like a cheap Italian chain restaurant, the restaurant has definitely gone downhill I would not recommend. I will say however that the servers and staff were all lovely.

We returned on Sunday 16 February, we were served by Gabriele and Giovanni the Sicilian and we ate as well as at home. Thanks for everything. See you soon.

Generally a good experience. Service from the staff was very good. Food was okay, we both ordered pasta - carbonara and a tomato gnocchi. Both were slightly bland. I would come here again and try something else.

San Carlos puede estar expandiéndose, pero esta sucursal está negociando con glorias pasadas. Está en una ubicación privilegiada cerca de los teatros y la calle Peter’s Square, pero no puede hacer frente a la multitud preteatro. Todo es apresurado y caótico y el ambiente no se ayuda cuando las grandes mesas cercanas no reciben la comida que han pedido o tienen que esperar siglos. Nos dieron nuestra comida en un tiempo razonable, pero definitivamente no valió la pena, un pedazo quebradizo frío de tostadas de masa madre con unos cuantos tomates echados hechos para una morenita muy pobre. Mi principal estaba bien, pero mi marido tenía la lasaña y me gustaría haber leído las otras críticas, ya que realmente era del tamaño de un sello postal y toda la salsa de tomate y sin carne. El vino tampoco era mucho a pesar del costo. Solo queríamos salir y llegar al teatro, así que tal vez deberíamos habernos quejado, pero había tantos otros haciendo esto que simplemente lo dejamos ir. Huelga decir que nunca volveremos y que de hecho nos ha apartado de todas las ramas vinculadas a esta cadena. Definitivamente el estilo (y no mucho de eso) sobre la sustancia.

This is a lovely place , we have been many times the food is normally good staff are friendly and efficient and its a shame for me to say that this night it was busy but two of us out of a party of 8 had warm to cold food this is a shame , I complained and got a replacement and pritty quick but my friend didn't want to make a fuss .again, shame, but it shows that the staff dealt with it quickly . Would I go again, yes !

We ate here before seeing Kinky Boots at the theatre. The food was reasonably priced and there was a good choice. Our dishes were all tasty, though a little garlicky. What stood out most was the service. The waiters were attentive,polite and fun. I mentioned the birthdays we were celebrating and the waiters brought out complimentary deserts with candles and sang for the birthday girls. I’d absolutely visit again.

Food would have been lovely had we had time to eat it . We waited an hour and ten minutes before it to arrive. Understandably it was busy as pre theatre time but we did ask how long we would have to wait . Food arrived about 25 minutes before the show so we had to leave half as we had about 10 minutes to eat it . They did give us a discount but would have been better not service charge for as well plus we did get the bill before the meal .

Took my partner here for her birthday for the first time and wasn't disappointed! It was very quiet when we went due to snowy weather however the staff were lovely and attentive. Super quick service and beautiful food. The fries are the best fries ever.. been wanting some more ever since!! They even made us up a small dessert platter just for one so we could share, Highly recommend

The atmosphere was great for a Saturday evening and all staff were pleasant and polite. However our food came very late and arrived cold (it had obviously been sat out on the side) and for the first time in my life I had to ask for it to be reheated. Our side order I chased twice and it arrived about 5 minutes after we'd finished our food so was no longer needed. I'm sure that isn't a frequent occurrence but made our experience quite poor overall.

Visited on a Monday afternoon the most aesthetically pleasing place!Food was spectacular tasted even better with each bite!Staff were on point timely service and very polite.Would definitely recommend portions were generous too!

Came here for dinner with friends just before Christmas. The resturant looks so beautiful inside. The food was amazing and the staff are very friendly and attentive. We were served by Ciprian and Misha, who both made us feel very welcome and gave helpful recommendations of what to try from the menu plus had a chat with us. Overall lovely dining experience and would recomend!

Fantastic! It was so welcomeing , clean and warm. The staff was amazing could not do more to help you. Food was amazing not much of a waitng time , and food made at table side so fun to watch. Such a fantastic atmophers and the decor was brilliant i loved just lookin around the restaurant.

Poor, below what was expected for this type of restaurant. Food was especially disappointing. Garlic bread with no garlic. Most main courses were cold. It's more a party place where people come to celebrate without worrying too much about the quality. Unfortunately the quality was badly lacking. Would not recommend.

Booked for the evening of December 31st, we also returned on the evening of the First, since we were staying in a hotel in the building behind the restaurant. Great food, excellent staff (especially Gabriele) and almost all of it originally from Italy, so it didn't even feel like Manchester. Fast service for the evening of the 31st with a full room, but the quality of the food did not suffer at all. On the evening of the first we limited ourselves to a couple of pizzas, quite large and very loaded with toppings, in fact I wasn't able to finish mine. Already booked for the evening of February 16th when we will be back in those parts.

Love the food at the King St San Carlo and have been to Fumo before and had a nice experience. On this occasion however we had the worst service from start to finish. Couldn't fault the food but sadly the service spoilt the evening. Won't be back.

Lastminute dinner plans for the nephews birthday on boxing day ! The service was friendly and attentive throughout, couldn't thank Claudio and his team enough for looking after us. The cocktails were great, everyone enjoyed their food. A bunch of 18 year old teenagers are somewhat difficult to please but this exceeded their expectations. Thankyou for the birthday dessert and signalong- always great seeing restaurants adding that extra effort to mark the occasion. Definitely will visit again when back up north. 👌🏾❤️

Fumo was a fabulous introduction to Manchester hospitality for our family. We walked in at closing time on Christmas Eve and they treated us like family not just guests. Claudio was a fantastic with great recommendations. We enjoyed the carbonara, bolognese, lasagna and risotto , they each were delicious and very well done. We finished up our meal with sorbets and crème brule. We are very grateful for the memories made and the meal shared tonight!

Cold restaurant, cold food. Service was ok but everything else doesn’t reflect the price point.

Service very slow, forgot to bring wine forgot to bring children’s drinks, brought second bottle of wine but not same as first bottle we ordered but £25 dearer than first bottle! Starters average, main Luke warm, not busy on entering but busy when we left. 4 adults 3 children in party. Use San carlo often which we love but won’t be returning here sadly.

Claudio was amazing, we came for my mums birthday. She loved everything, the service was 10/10 and I’d be back again just for his attention to detail and for his recommendations.

Honestly one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had, made even worse by the fact that it was my birthday. Me and my group of 5 walked into the restaurant and were eventually given a table for an hour. We collectively decided not to order much as the staff emphasised we needed to be gone before 5. Multiple waitresses and waiters were overheard badmouthing my group and I for our small order while one of us was near the bar area. I also looked up during our meal to see more staff laughing at the bar while staring at our table. Was not expecting high school bully treatment. We also received multiple side looks during our time. Waiting for someone to take our order took over 20 minutes, and asking for someone to get our bill took very long also as waiters seemed to purposely ignore our calls for the bill. Despite the small order and limited time to eat, we were all told to order a drink by force; which was shocking, as the prices did not match the quality or sizes of the drinks. Was also shocking how one of party ordered a bottle water for them individually, yet it was shared around between all of us…despite the waiter saying we all had to order individually? The food we ordered was almost tasteless and sad looking. When we left, we walked past a group of women who immediately were greeted and offered to have their coats taken; which was a stark contrast to how we were greeted. Will NEVER come back here again; and I advice that people think twice before considering here.

Big booking, clearly understaffed, didn't bring mains to some of our party, didn't bring veg/potatoes at all and given the food was all pre-ordered days before, there is really no excuse. To top it off the staff were argumentative regarding the issues with our party and each other and tried to absolve themselves of any ownership of the issues and no apology. VERY POOR !! Food we did get was average

Throwing an A4 folder in front of someone when there is barely space to read the menu let alone cross reference the menu items against the HUGE FOLDER and then looking at the menu to find the items you can actually have is not my idea of a lovely chilled dining experience. IF YOU HAVE ANY ALLERGIES INCLUDING NEEDING TO BE GLUTEN FREE AVOID THIS RESTAURANT. Staff were absolutely lovely even if it did take them a long time to finally come over but their policies and procedures for food preferences need to be bought into the twentieth century. It's equivalent to if there were a fire bringing someone the fire procedure manual rather than guiding them professionally to the nearest fire exit.

I do NOT expect to be BAD-MOUTHED by a member of staff, on leaving,when I have just paid £109 for TWO people - do you think we are deaf? My meluzzo (hake) was beautiful, but my husband's veal was bland and dry, and his cocktail was served in a badly chipped glass, that admittedly was replaced, but at £13 per cocktail, should never have made it to the table. I would have been happy to return for the very good fish cookery, but now I know with what disdain customers are viewed, never, never again

Our food was really tasty and portion sizes just right but my tortellini was lukewarm. The interior of the restaurant is quite striking, and the staff were really friendly and welcoming,but like other reviews I do think the service needs some tweaking. Although it was a quiet lunchtime visit, the wrong main courses were brought out, and returned, then I was given the wrong dessert. Because we were off to the theatre and needed to leave, I ate it. The waitress waited until my last mouthful to apologise for the mistake. When a service charge is added to your bill this does seem a shame

We were in Manchester to see a concert at the nearby Bridgwater hall so happened upon this restaurant as we were looking for somewhere to eat before the show. We love San Carlos on King St W so we’re expecting much of the same. The place has a nice buzz but as we were walk-ins and it was also a Friday we were taken upstairs. The restaurant itself was in a slightly weird conference style centre but nevertheless the ambience was nice as we entered the room. We both ordered Lasagne which these days (anywhere) can be a bit hit and miss as the plates arrive sizzling but the lasagne can be stone cold in the middle! Anyhow we decided to risk it and as soon as it was placed on the table we checked the temp and thankfully it was piping hot. So as we were stirring we were both thinking er…where is the meat? I am honestly not exaggerating when I say we couldn’t find any at all! It was tasty but if you can imagine just pasta and tomato sauce that’s all it was. I was going to say something but we didn’t have much time and my husband said look it tastes fine let’s just eat and go. So we did but when I went to pay (nearly £70 for 2 lasagne 2 Garlic bread 1 beer 1 wine) I mentioned about whether they had given us a veggie version as there was no meat and the waiter said well why didn’t you tell me which is fair enough. I declined the service charge but left feeling ripped off and disappointed unfortunately.

My favourite restaurant in Manchester. Lovely decor. Cloakroom available. Very clean. Soft mood lighting. No annoying music in background. Large open bar. Open floor plan. Extensive menu. All dishes arrived beautifully presented. The staff are profession, smartly dressed and very polite. Many good food recommendations are offered. Service is good. Would recommend this restaurant to everybody.

Booked dump as it looked nice and is part of San Carlo chain staff were excellent food though was disappointing to say the least. On a busy weekend they had run out of oysters by 8pm Saturday alternative starters were ok 1x calamari and 1x chilli prawns not great but just ok. Mains sadly were inedible 1x carbonara Which had clearly been left standing because it was nearly warm and had set! And a lasagne that was probably one of the worst I’ve tried both meals were so heavily salted they couldn’t be eaten and were sent back alternatives were offered but we cut our loses and left. Initially nothing was knocked off the bill but after a short debate the price of both mains were removed . Overall very disappointed and the experience ruined what was supposed to be a special evening

Went in to celebrate my son’s graduation and what a lovely place it turned out to be. We received a warm welcome and the decor and ambiance was first rate. After being shown to our table the waiting staff were very helpful and friendly, the interaction with our group, including my grandson, was absolutely amazing. The menu was extensive, although not a lot of choice for vegi/vegan, and when the food arrived it was served hot and was delicious. I can thoroughly recommend the oysters and frutti di mare and my wife who is vegan had the penne arrabbiata. All in all the evening was great with the staff going above and beyond to make sure it was an unforgettable night.

The servers are welcoming and social, though will leave you to your own devices if you'd like. Food wonderful for an acceptable price, my food was wonderful and came quickly. The atmosphere is warm and fancy, making you feel like your high dining. Overall great place to eat, would heavily recommend

We went here to celebrate my husbands graduation and it was by far the best experience we’ve ever had at a San Carlo. In particular the staff were just incredible. Our 4 year old son (who never sits still) was entertained the entire time. They were so attentive, kind and accommodating. We live outside of Manchester now but we will definitely travel back regularly to visit. Highly recommend.

Had lunch there with my daughter recently. Lovely environment and service good. Meal very tasty and well presented. Watch out for price of wine per glass and service charge!

Terrible Experience – Food Poisoning! I recently dined at Fumo and had an awful experience that I can’t ignore. Shortly after my meal, I started feeling extremely unwell, and it quickly escalated to food poisoning. I had to spend the night sick and in pain, which completely ruined my weekend. The food itself was subpar, and I should have known better than to continue eating after noticing some signs of poor hygiene in the restaurant. I reached out to the management to express my concerns, but they were dismissive and did not seem to care about the health risks involved. I won’t be returning, and I advise others to think twice before eating here. It’s just not worth the risk

A lovely meal here. Delicious food and some great service with a really friendly waiter/maitre’d. Only disappointment was a more sullen gentleman serving which let down a little. Felt as if he was doing us a favour… and a contrast to the rest of the staff who were great.

The worst experience of dining out I have ever had in my life. My meal had a black hair in it that looked like a pubic hair. We where completely disgusted by this and I said that I didn't want to have it replaced as it put me off completely. Myself and my Mum had agreed to share our mains and was going to half each of them. After this I didn't want to eat anything. My Mum finished her meal and then the waiter brought me over my meal again, I explained I can't eat it now as I have been put of. He said sorry and said please eat it which made me feel really uncomfortable as a customer. Why would I want to eat food that I am worried is not sanitary. To also make matters worse my Mum had finished her food so it wasnt like we could enjoy our meal together and have a lovely time like we planned. When the bill came the only removed meal was my meal. To be honest I was so shocked the whole bill was not wiped given the fact we had such a poor experience and the whole situation ruined the evening. I asked the waiter if she thinks it is fair we have to pay, she said they have removed the cost of the meal with the hair in it. I explained my feelings about this and said that regardless of the meal with the hair being removed the experience has been ruined and I don't feel it's fair to charge us. She sent over the male waiter and he then explained we had eaten the other food and therefore we must pay. He showed absolutely no understanding or consideration for what had happened at all. My Mum told him we are happy to pay for the drinks and starter but the two main meals should be removed of the bill as we had plan to share food and the whole experience had been ruined. He didn't want to do this and it was only because people where now looking over to the table he agreed to do this. When he returned he said 'happy now' and I said no I am not. He then looked at me with disappointment and shock as if I should be impressed that an establishment that is so lucrative and well known thinks it's acceptable to still charge someone after serving food with a hair in it. He then proceeded to tell me that this has not happened for over 8 months Asif this should reassure me about the level of hygiene. This is not McDonald's and it should never happen. The whole evening was ruined and just left a really bad impressed of the business for me. I have gone to San Carlo in Liverpool for years and go 1s a month and never ever had an issue. This experience has made me never want to put another penny in the business again and I will also be telling everyone I know how it made me feel and saying they should never come to the restaurant. Don't let the nice decor and name fool you.. this place is dirty and unclean. Take close note of the light shades when you look up and the amount of dust on them. The whole place needs a deep clean and they need lessons on how to manage disappointment customers without trying to transfer a level of guilt onto the customer for being very upset about their poor experience. I am simply disgusted. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Absolutely awful, do not book here. If you are expecting the usual san carlo standard this is not it. The garlic bread was just bread with lots of oil, the arinchi was just plain boiled rice, the meatballs were watery and mushy and the linguine was awful. All the food was bland and tasteless. Would not recommend.

Poor service and tasteless food. Visited on my partners birthday, and it was spoiled, very expensive, tasteless food.

This restaurant is not worthy of the brand “San Carlo” it is a very low quality almost high street chain quality. San Carlo on King street is one of my favourite restaurants, but Fumo is nothing like it. I will never go back there again. Food is bland, with no taste or effort, complained twice and was told “this is how we make things here”

The staff here are incredibly friendly and kind, and the food is absolutely delicious!

What can I say, a fantastic restaurant with excellent food and very professional staff. This is a jewel in Manchester.

Our last night in Manchester was made so special by Fumo by San Carlo. A warm, friendly welcome at the door though we had no reservation. Our taste sensation journey began with prawns that lead to our mains of lobster ravioli and seafood spaghetti. Washed down with delicious cocktails. Finished with a delectable tasting plate of desserts and a nutcracker cocktail. The service was fun without being rude and attentive without being intrusive. The decor modern, the atmosphere moody with dim lighting. Thankyou to the wonderful staff at Fumo 😊

We had a super dinner at San Carlo Fumo last night. A regular patron at the King St West restaurant this was my first visit to Fumo. A more relaxed and intimate setting with the usual top tier food as I have come to expect from the group. A very warm welcome and continued liveliness was provided by Ciprian front of house and our waiter Misha was very professional, chatty and provided an attentive and super enjoyable service. Well done once again San Carlo!

Disaster .Food is too bad . Pasta is like tomatoes are as a whole in it and half of plate is filled with just tomatoes. Calazone is bad too. Charged us 59 pounds . Never ever coming back .
