Recently refurbished, I've watched and waited for opening. Only had fish n chips but it was excellent then took our drinks and watched granddaughter have fun in the play park next door. Lovely evening.

Mildly disappointing. Decent place, nice decor, great menu supported by good cooking and presentation. Fish and chips were huge portions and really good pork chop. Let down by sterile atmosphere - staff seemed pleasant and competent enough but with very limited interpersonal skills: no “nice to see you” or “where are you from” and not even a “thank you for coming” when we paid. In a competitive market, we were surprised at the lack of warmth.

We had a brilliant out the blue meal here last night! Happened to be driving past late and managed to arrive just in time for food still being serviced. Some of the best pub fish and chips we’ve had - a side of curry sauce included very much welcomed! Great service and great atmosphere. Wish I had my dog with me as it’s very dog friendly. Will definitely be returning when next driving through!

Went to the Freemasons for the first time for an early dinner today. The staff were really welcoming and professional and the bar and restaurant area is full of character and the atmosphere is very relaxed and dogs are welcome in the bar area. My wife had Rarebit with Tomato Chutney for a starter and Mushroom Risotto for her Main Course. I had Croquille St Jacque to start and Ox Cheek Bougignon for my Main. It was all beautifully cooked and easily the best meal we've had in a pub for years - a different standard altogether from the other pubs we've visited in the surrounding area. The menu had plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options too and was easy to read and understand the information about allergens. All in all a fabulous meal in a lovely, characterful pub, with friendly, professional staff who made you feel welcome. Thanks to all at the Freemasons and hopefully see you soon x

Came for opening night and it was amazing, highly recommend!! Arrived and the atmosphere was lovely, both log fires on, very clean and cosy. Great selection of drinks on bar. Big big compliments to the chef! the food ( Yorkshire tapas ) was to die for. We will be coming back for Sunday dinner! Lovely hosts, lovely staff. All round top pub!

Popped in for a pint on route out… extremely nice lady behind bar managed to squeeze me in for a light lunch as I had commented how nice the food looked and I wasn’t wrong it was lush

One of the BEST meals we’ve had anywhere in a long long time! Absolutely superb and can’t wait to go back again on our next visit up to Yorkshire in August for hubby’s birthday! Lovely to see so many villagers as well as outsiders use this pub. Refurbishment done very well, staff super friendly and doggy friendly in the bar area! Do book as it gets super busy even on week nights! Highly recommend

Never disappoints, one of our favourites locally

Would 100% recommend The Freemasons Arms for food which is very good. I had the steak pie which was one of the best I have ever had. I followed this with the crumble which was again very very good. However can I mention Hannah who greated us with the warmest of welcomes and was very friendly during our visit. It goes a long way when you get 1st class service along with superb food. Will definitely return.

We walked over from West Tanfield on a Wednesday night and had an excellent time. Staff were excellent, food was lovely, 100% recommend.

Staying locally it was recommended. The service was really good, attentive without being overbearing. The food lived up to the recommendation. We will.return. Sorry for the corny dad joke 😉

Just home from a wonderful Sunday Lunch at the Freemasons Arms. Selected based on reviews as we were meeting family from Newcastle (we travelled from South of Leeds) to celebrate Mum's 86th birthday. The atmosphere, food and staff were all excellent. Easy to find and no problem parking. Thanks to all who served us! Highly recommended.

Gorgeous decor, friendly staff, superb food. Between us for starters, mussels, goat's cheese & mushrooms on sourdough, all nice but especially the mushrooms, beautiful sauce. Mains - hot dog, Thai green curry & lamb rump, again all beautiful but especially the lamb, melted in the mouth. Nice choice of desserts but too full to try. Portion size was just right if you want to have several courses, some places try to impress with huge portions but most is wasted

First proper family dinner in a restaurant for nearly a year and didn't disappoint, food was amazing, service was extremely friendly, everyone had a great night and we will be back.

Staff were very pleasent and couldn't do enough for you! The food menu was good, with lots of different options. The quality of the food was very good, I would recommend the Steak of the day, this was cooked to perfection. Would definitely recommend and return.

The service is extremely slow. We waited over an hour for our main course. The duck was so tough it could not be eaten. Overall experience very poor. Will certainly not be back

A complete gem of a gastropub only minutes away from junction 50 on the A1. Car parking available opposite the pub is a little limited but the premises are modern and tastes fully appointed. The service is personable, friendly and helps makes a fantastic ambience. The menu is interesting and varied, with good quality produce and beautiful presentation. Two wood burners just add to the effect. Excellent food - would strongly recommend.

A good portion of roast beef which was tender and tasty. A better selection of vegetables would have been appreciated as we were only given French beans and cauliflower cheese with one very small carrot. However, the ice-cream dessert was delicious.

We as a family had a faultess meal, served in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. A good selection of draught beers and a variety of quality and affordable wines. A good time had by all.😀

Unbelievably high standard of quisine. Very successfully creative dishes. Taste, texture combinations are mind-blowing. This chef would blow any TV chef out of the water. Very relaxing environment and subtly decorated. Fantastic range of Yorkshire beers and we'll informed staff. I will return and happily travel a long way for another evening there

We were hungry and passing this place we thought we would give it a try. I'm glad we did. Front of house was excellent, she made us feel very welcome. The decor is very beautiful, very traditional country with large table's to sit at. I ordered the beef ciabatta and my partner the roast pork ciabatta. It was beautiful. The chips were outstanding with gorgeous gravy to dip them in. In all honesty I have never had better chips and I don't usually like them. I very rarely give 5 stars unless I am experiencing excellence and that's what the whole moment was.

Lovely country pub, very comfortably appointed. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the service was excellent. The food we had was also excellent, large portions and hearty, and there was a selection of real ales on hand pull at the bar (three I think).

Having visited here many times over the last 15 years we were really looking forward to our meal. What a disappointment! We will not be going back. The quality of the food was unrecognisable from our previous visits.

Lovely pub, great service, excellent food. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, both when we stopped by just to use the restroom and when we had dinner. Steak and ale pie was quite tasty. Burger was good though different - a bit heavy on the spices for my taste. Cozy inside.
