Freddies in County Durham

We were in Stanhope and decided to pop in to Freddie's however before I placed my order I asked if they took cards, I was then totally shocked when this rather abrupt woman said if I must, then started ranting on about the bank charging her £1.20 for each transaction. If this is the case then I would suggest a notice on the window saying cash only or even a polite I would prefer cash but no problem if you only have a card response. I am very much in favour of supporting local businesses but this one does not deserve it with an attitude like that In the end we ordered 2x small fish and chips which were mediocre to average but obviously do not recommend this place and will not return.

I HAVE NEVER HAD FISH AND CHIPS LIKE THIS I'VE HAD BIGGER FISH FINGERS IT'S THE FIRST TIME I'VE HAD A BURNT FISH THERE WAS LESS THAN A HANDFUL OF CHIPS AND 2KG OF AWFUL BATTER NEVER AGAIN DON'T GO HERE

Terrible fish and chips batter was soggy not cooked properly,all chip ends rock hard supposed to be large but no way,won’t be returning

I went here on Saturday to collect some food. I asked for fish and chips and sausage and chips, plus curry sauce. They asked if I wanted large or small. I asked for large. When I got to the caravan and opened the paper I was absolutely disgusted. The portions were tiny, the food was cold, the batter was soggy and I was ripped off to the sun of £16.10. Daylight robbery. DO NOT EAT HERE.

The worst fish and chips we’ve ever had, fish was all batter and so greasy a small portion of chips that looked and tasted to be reheated

My son purchased 4 large fish and chips and brought them home, I have to say they were the worst I have ever had, chips very minimal and all ends no actual chips, fish was so thin, it was practically non existent as batter was so thick and greasy…. What a total waste of money, £42 if I lived closer I would have taken them back!

Absolutely dreadful. Fish tiny. Chips all scrap ends, greasy as anything. Literally the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Please avoid. £35 for 2 adults and two little kids. Utter disgrace.

Miniscule pieces of cod, soggy chips and all tasting unpleasantly of oil/fat. We felt ripped off to be honest. A shame because the staff were friendly and we live locally but won't be going back in a hurry.

Popped in for some chips for the family. Tasty chips, and the batter on the sausage and spam fritter was very tasty. I'd say this ship shop was of a higher standard than most I've visited. We Will certainly return.

Tasty, well cooked food, good sized portions and reasonable prices. Served by friendly, chatty staff. Will happily recommend

Been coming to this fish shop for a long time now but have noticed the quality and quantity is no where near as good as it used to be. Chips were scrappy and not that warm. Usually get fish bites but as there was very few chips with them we decided on a large fish and extra portion of chips.it was tiny. The price at £8.10 is extremely steep for what you get. Unfortunately we will not be returning

we travel 20 miles to go here as they are so good. have no idea why there are negative comments here as i find the service is great and the price is about the same as anywhere else. the portions also have always been good.they also have the most amazing scenes of the somme etc battlefields on the walls. if i had anything to complain about it would only be that its not a restaurant, and we have eat them in the car. you can smell vinegar for days!

Very concerned about front of staff lady - taking money giving change then never sanitizer hands before going to serve next customers after handling money she was touching inside of boxes - moving fish to put salt and pepper on - also handling buns - Lovely shop - but needs to do normal hand cleaning or sanitising after handling money or card machine While I waited serviced 5 people and gave change and never did hands With today virus this is a must

Food lovely. Customer service diabolical!! Rude, offensive and disrespectful. Actually shocked at the way I was spoken too and the other poor woman in the shop! If I wasn’t buying for the children I would have walked out.

Absolutely fantastic food. We had fish and chips, sausages, curry sauce and a few more bits - we all loved our food. Very highly recommended.

the food tastes really good, and the staff are kind and helpful. it is quite overpriced and the portions are small. I would recommend, however I don't think that there is any seating.

Dont order small chips as they are non existent practically you can count them , 200 % profit here I think , but most of all this review is about the rudest person serving ever , never known such rudeness , very very bad , and bad for their business , as we wont go back and will tell others !

Food is always nice but the portions are tiny! Nearly £3.00 for large chips in a container which is only half filled is a RIP off. Large fish is certainly not large and the kids meals are also very small portions.

I can only speak as I find. I had a portion of chips that were lovely and hot. Not greasy at all. In a recyclable container. Well done Freddie’s I have had chips like that in years. I ate every bit. Thank you

Fish bites wow. Spam fritters perfect. Fish wow. No seating inside. Plenty of seating outside. Next to bus stop. Plenty of parking

Need to seriously get your act together, fish undercooked with batter raw on the inside, chips warm and tasteless, front of house with attitude, not great at all, yet in prime location and plenty of tourists and passing trade, should have queues really...should take note of your reviews..

My experience of this chippy is so poor, I don't know where to start. Here are the highlights. Chips were poor, shrivelled specimens of a potato. Barely warm and had clearly been kept warm for hours. The staff were not interested in the job, customers or how the food was. Even the seagulls refused to eat them. So until I find somewhere worse, this is my worst eat out experience ever.

Called in today for some lunch and ordered some children's meals at £3 each , 3 chicken nuggets and about 5 chips it wouldn't feed a toddler . When i complained was told the portions are set , well you need to reset them !! The fish was the greasiest fish I've ever eaten with 5 inc thick batter , and the mushy peas were not mushy they were solid and hard .I will never call here again and will drive down to frostley were you get decent food .

We received the very best service from one of the senior ladies. She really looked after us. There was a new girl on and she gave her a hand to ensure we were all looked after. We also had great fish and lovely chips with nice thick gravy.. Highly recommend if you are away for the weekend like we were, especially after a big night - great hangover cure

It promised so much with a nicely decorated shop and interesting WWI photos/descriptions and signs telling us how marvellous the batter would be; I was looking forward to things.

Friendly service, with simple food well cooked and at a reasonable price. We'd call in again if in Stanhope.

Ordered a large order for a big family didn't have to wait to long. The fish and chips were lovely and they were great portion sizes would recommend

First time I had been to this fish and chip shop and I'm glad I did. I ordered burger and chips and they were gorgeous, just how I like them and the batter was lovely! Adding to that, the owner of the shop has displayed WWI memorabilia on the walls of the shop and has done an excellent job in keeping the spirit alive of the young lads who gave their lives fighting. Can't see what people on here have to moan about, unless they like half cooked, white chips? This was like what they used to be like back in the day. Very nice and thanks for the wall display, much appreciated, Colin. Will call again for sure.

I've always had lovely fish n chips here. Fish is beer battered so looks darker than normal, certainly not burnt as some seem to think, and tastes delicious, as do the chips- perfect.

Ordered small cod and small chips. Cod was actually burnt . Never experienced that before but the chips were nice. Also ordered cheeseburger and small chips , cheese burger came with grated unmelted cheese on and small chips were tiny! Really disappointed with the food.

This is a very nice fish and chip shop. The food is excellent. The portions HUGE! You get excellent value for money. The staff are lovely and helpful. Go there - it's a good shop.

Fish batter very dark but not cooked underneath so soggy, fish barely cooked. Chips very soggy and bland. All went in bin. Would have taken back if had lived closer. Worst I have ever had

Great service, reasonable prices and tasty food! We got chips to eat at the caravan and I couldn’t fault it. The curry was ‘proper’ chip shop curry and was little spiced. Fish made with beer batter.

As first time visitors to Stanhope we were very impressed with our fish and chips from Freddies. The batter was dark in colour as sometimes happens with beer batter, however this did not spoil it at all. In fact the batter was extremely light and crispy and the fish itself was very fresh tasting ,chips were also well cooked and not overly greasy. Mushy peas are without doubt the best we have ever tasted. All in all a lovely experience which we look forward to trying again in the future.

We really wanted to support this new local business, and understood that after initial issues, they had resolved the problems and all should be well. Sadly we were very disappointed. The mushy peas were excellent. The chips were ok, if greasy. The fish was awful - swimming in fat, dark hard batter and so overcooked it was tasteless. My brother bought fish and chips at the same time, and he too said they were much too greasy and the fish was dry. What a shame.

We have now tried Freddies 4 times as we really want to love the food from here. Sadly on each ocassion it's been same. VERY greasy (left coating on kitchen worktop where package had sat), batter very dark with unpleasant bitter taste, fish tasteless, chips pale. The people who run it are lovely and make fab mushy peas, hoping The rest can improve with experience.

Absolutely mortified with the chips from here. Had chips cheese and gravy and the tips were disgusting and went in the bin...rock solid not cooked properly. Was too late to take back as they shut at 8pm and I didn't have enough time otherwise they would of gone straight back. I went a while back and it was superb been taken over and obviously needs vast improvements. Staff lovely so it is a shame. Won't be back if they can't cook the chips I dread to think what the fish is like.

We were visiting the area and nipped in for something for our tea. We ordered fish and chips and 2 kids meals which were battered sausage and chips. Both the fish and sausage batter was burnt to a crisp and had to be taken off and discarded. Obviously these kinds of meals are greasy but they seemed excessively so and we all felt sick afterwards. The kids meals had about 6 chips with their half sausage which seemed a lot less than anywhere we have ever ordered from. I would not recommend this establishment and will not eat from here again.

Popped in on the way home from work got two fish and a bag of chips and I’m so pleased I did even tho this place as had some bad reviews when it first opened I disagree with them ....the fish was cooked to perfection the batter was a little to think for me but it was still nice the chips where to die for no grease in sight ....the staff where very friendly I will be going back again...
