dry old chips wont be using again well over priced now stuff left for ages prefer to go somewhere else in future

Take-away at lunch time. I ordered haddock and was delighted to hear it would be 8-10 minutes, because that meant it would be cooked fresh. It was a good size fillet for £6.60, perfectly cooked with a crispy batter. 5* Sadly I can't say the same about the chips, their texture indicated they had sat round a while. Big portion size wasted because my mother and I didn't feel inclined to eat them. 3* Can't fault the service.

Said a 20 min wait when it was over an hour wait . Husband cone home with food and it was cold and all over cooked. Was horrible. We are regulars and this was this was the first time we were left dissatisfied and disappointed.

LOVELY fish and chips with curry sauce. Chips fried perfectly. Fish tasty, I had the "small" portion but it was more than enough. The curry sauce wasn't the best but was ok. The chips were fab did I mention this?

We decided to pop in, lured in by the "multi award winning fish and chips" claims, we usually get our chips from a chip shop on The Barbican and are always delighted by the quality but with this being closer to home we thought we'd give it a try. I really wish we hadn't bothered, the only plus point was the generous portion size, this proved to be pointless though as it was just more to throw in the bin. How the chips managed to be over cooked on the outside whilst remaining hard on the inside really is a wonder. They were absolutely tasteless too! I would recommend you save your money and maybe have a walk along The Barbican where you can find many wonderful chip shops, this unfortunately is not a wonderful chip shop and I can only assume the "multi awards" they speak of have either been printed up on their own computer or are for "Most Tasteless/Dry Chip" Overall a complete waste of money.

Did not have to wait long but the food was awful :( spam fritter was burnt to a crisp, battered cod was tasteless and the batter was soggy and the chips were mediocre at best.

As a couple we have been visiting Francine's for many years, Until recently it has been very good but alas... all good things come to an end. Today we had to wait for 38 minutes for two pieces of fish and a very mediocre 'regular' portion of chips which was a mixture of scraps and chips. Also...no pickled onions!.. what sort of chip shop doesn't have pickled onions!? I had to enquire as to the whereabouts of my food before it was forthcoming. A genuinely disappointing experience for £13+ and back home... well, it, wasn't all that and a bag of chips!

Disappointing. Used to be a great takeaway bit our recent experience was awful. Chips were ok but the battered fish was not light or crispy, just a thick, flat greasy layer on a mediocre piece of fish. Won't be going back

We have discovered that the least delayed and disruptive way to get your chips, fish, kebabs etc is to phone. The line may be engaged but after a couple of redials you should get through. You order your food, are given a number (rather like a pharmacy or delicatessen), get told that the order will be about ten minutes - which you use to drive or walk over. Waiting in the shop is no longer permitted. You go straight in and pay at the counter and then have to wait outside , usually for no more that three or four minutes until your number appears on the light display in the window and go back in where your stuff is passed to you. Refreshingly slick. Only comments. Pity you can’t pay by card on the phone. Wondered why it wasn’t online but some people can’t and the human intervention avoids misunderstandings. The system does seem to have slightly extended the waiting time for folk who just turn up and order on arrival. In late January the early evening temperature was down to about 2 degrees and there were about 16 people socially distancing out in the cold, although our turnaround time was about 5 minutes and we could even have waited in the car. We are still disappointed that Francine’s persist in imposing single use plastic carriers instead of stout paper bags. Food too often loses any crispness and can become soggy before you get home.

We visited this shop twice in November and had a great impression both times. We'll organised team, always polite and professional. Food they serve always spot on. Thank you guys, just keep on as you are doing. I'll definitely recommend you to anyone 👍

We arrived just before queues but these were snaking out on the pavement before we left. When it’s busy they need an exterior tannoy. Portions remain generous and prices competitive but they really should stop sending us away with the paper wrapped fried goodies all shoved into plastic bags which render your supper steamy soggy, and less palatable even if you drive home at speed. Why can’t they use those big heavy duty paper sacks like those from American family supermarkets?

Amazing - fish was beautifully cooked in thin batter - thick fillet and wonderful flavour Chips were well drained not at all greasy - and massive portion It’s 10/10 but as trip advisor only goes up to 5 - It’s 5/5 !

Imagine la salchicha de calidad más barata. . .Ahora imagínelo 10 veces peor que eso.Esa es la calidad que tuve la desgracia de comprar en la tienda de pescado y papas fritas Francines.Ni siquiera sé por qué todavía lo llaman así, ya que parece estar dirigido por extranjeros ahora, no por las personas originales.Tuve salchichas y patatas fritas. Las patatas fritas no eran geniales, pero Dios mío, la salchicha era asquerosa. Al cortarlo, el interior era graso y blanco, hecho de Dios sabe qué.No parecía carne, ni olía ni sabía a carne.La comida de calidad más barata y seamos honestos, no los precios baratos.Seguramente evitaré este lugar en el futuro.

Delicious every time we get their food and reasonably priced. Always hot. I don't want to have to write 100 words so I won't participate.

Food average at best, not all food fresh mostly hot held which means dry and hard. Some items cooked fresh but not all, staff not very friendly they never speak or engage in conversation just mutter between themselves.

Ordered over phone. small fish and chips 2 battered sausages small chips and curry sauce £13.10 was given 2 jumble sausages not battered dried out like lunch time left overs chips dry fish not bad but batter dry curry sauce watery I don't normally use these because never liked it in the past. but Lees chippy in St budo who I normally go to because they are amazing was so busy, thought I'd give franzines another try, again to my disappointment aload of rubbish expensive and disgusting. I rang them to complain all I got was OK thank you OK thank you never again will I use them thanks for reading my review I understand everyone as different taste if other people enjoy them that's fine.

Absolutely exceptional - truly monster portions that really are of good quality - the haddock is always really thick and full of flavour - and those chips are always well cooked and never ever greasy - just how I like them Perfect !!!

Fast service for a busy place. Fish is very nice, spicy potatoes give a miss. Hard potatoes with no taste, waste of money leaving me with half a meal and feeling i should have a refund

Ordered today the batter was overdone on the sausage and pea fritter tough to cut.The chips were lots of crisp bits not proper chips. Disappointment big time certainly not the food we had in the past and i be ringing tomorrow to complain.

Had large fish n chips with curry sauce. Fish was massive and flaky Batter was crisp and just right. The price is reasonable to cheap Staff friendly and quick My relations are astounded at the price and quality when they visit Good ol Francines

Pedimos 6 pescado y papas fritas, lo envolvieron todo y lo pusieron en el calentador durante unos 10 minutos mientras esperaban a que se cocinara el resto del pedido. Cuando llegamos a casa hacía frío y la masa estaba empapada. Lo tiramos todo a la basura. Muy decepcionado

Service amazing, food great, excellent value for money. Always busy which is a testament to all the above. Staff very quick with order and very friendly. Always impressed every time, cannot recommend highly enough. 1 large chips is enough for s family of 4.

I have just had sausage and chips. I am sure they were yesterday’s warm up. The chips were dry and the sausage in batter was chewy. Awful.

We decided to try Francine's after hearing so much about it. We were in the area and despite it being 30 minutes before they closed, they were welcoming and took our order.

As usual Francines excelled - this is fish n chips at its best - and the portion sizes are more than adequate !!!!

We have used this fish and chip shop many times and have always been very happy with the food. We used it again last week and what a difference! The portion size allowed us to have a portion of fish and chips to share with a portion of scampi on the side. Lots of chips and a large piece of fish. This time however we ordered the same but when we opened it up at home the portion size was dismal, the chips were hard and the fish was almost half the normal size. No more francines for us and no more recommending it to anyone else. So sorry to have to say that.

After long day out with friends staying with me, bought 3 meals (1 cod and chips, 2 haddock and chips). Not a regular thing for me to buy takeout..but freshly cooked questions the result. The fish over cooked, tasteless batter, chips probably the worst I’ve ever bought anywhere. So disappointed for my friends. The ‘original’ Francines were brilliant .. not so now and £22 plus in the bin.

Was always our go to chippy.always a nice sized bit of perfectly cooked fish and generous portion of chips.sadly for the second time recently I got home and unwrapped an insult.thin overcooked dry as a bone fish and reheated chips.wont be making a 3rd mistake.

We’ve found this chip shop by accident really, used them this week for convenience and have found a little gem of a place or should I say plaice ! Great service and lovely food! Worth a visit! The large fish is a monster!

Friendly service, not always the quickest because the food is freshly cooked to order and is very popular. They also offer a GLUTEN FREE menu on a Monday. Excellent food

For the 2nd time within 7 days. I feel seriously let down. Fish & Chips not worth the money has to be one of the worst. Chips were horrible dry like carboard small and bitty. Fish was soggy. Won't be back. Also there phone number doesn't work.Probably just as well.

I went for my usual which is large donner meat, chips, 2 x plain sausages and spicy spuds.

Went there to get the famous fish&chips.; The portions were indeed big but the chips seemed reheated, hard and mass produced. I would not recommend burgers there either because the meat was of a poor quality. Fish was ok but I am very surprised they won an award.

Not been to Francunes for a while but went last night, ordered 2 small cos and chips, curry sauce and home made mushy peas. Well it was delicious and the fish was huge, loads of chips and both the curry sauce and mushy peas really delicious. 10/10 Francunes.

Always get big portions at francines my partner gets a large fish and chips and feeds 3 of us can't say a bad word tasty chip shop for sure ! :)

If you can fry it Francines sells it, and every portion is double sized so if you order wisely (share!) it is also great value

I found the food to be over priced . The wait time was not good , although the staff work very hard . The chips were in quantity but not quality . The fish was too greasy .

I would like to say everything is god about francines the food and staff are fantastic if you have never been give it a visit.

Big portions... the fish is the size of a shark and plenty for two to share! Curry sauce is good and a child’s portion of chips is plenty for an adult!!

Went around 4.30 pm as heard it was am award winning chip shop. The chips were didgusting and definitely reheated leaving a hard consistency couldnt hardly chew. Staight in the bin very disappointed...and hungry!!! Staff seemed lovely. Probably following orders. Never again !!

Terrible service, took ages for a small order! Ordered a battered burger and came solo, not even in a bun! Atrocious!! I’d get it if it was a battered meat patty but when you order a burger it comes as a meat patty in a bun! What’s the differential!! Chips weren’t cooked properly either! Would not recommend!

Popped in on the way home, it's almost a year ago we had fish and chips here, glad to say still good value and huge portions we opted for two small fish and one child's portion of chips again more than enough chips for us and very tasty , staff are polite, helpful, friendly and appear to enjoy their jobs, totally recommend

The portions here are more than enormous, they are designed for someone eating for two, or eating for an entire fully grown family. One portion feeds two people. Remember that and you will enjoy. They have an incredible range of stuff to order, but it is a chippie, so I stick to the fish and chips. On our last trip we had the haddock, which was terrific, good crisp batter and not too greasy. Chips are OK, but chip shop chips are one of those things where everyone has their own preference - I like them fat, greasy, soft inside and out, which I know makes me weird. Partner had peas and gravy with his, which I think makes him weird too. Good value coz you only need to buy one meal between two.

Great food, great service, very large portions brought a large chips and I could of fed the whole family with them, so be aware when buying there chips. Battered sausages are lovely along with the curry sauce. Wouldn’t say it’s my best fish & chip shop but very nice.

Love the fish, batter always crispy. Travels well all the way back to West Hoe. Huge portions & southern fried chicken is lush too. Always busy in there which is a good sign but speedy & friendly service.

Have used Francine’s a few times and never been disappointed, the portion sizes are huge. We normally have a fish portion each and a regular chips to share, plus a gravy and curry sauce which is more than enough for both of us. Have also...

Came in to fetch enough chips for a simple supper with cider for a rare Saturday evening of tv. Didn't for one moment expect that one large portion would be ample for two or three people. Too late when we had lugged the two huge...

Maybe there are better chippies to be found but the food at Francines is not bad especially the chicken. Huge...

Quite a regular to this chippie and we've never been disappointed, the fish is lovely and do recommend the Kebabs. Can get very busy but lots of staff working hard and it's well worth the wait.

Was quite excited about the thought but the realisation did not live up to the anticipation. The chips were fairly bland, fish was well cooked but the batter was rubbish. Soft, greasy and a good few Mil thick, not in the slightest crispy. Having had some amazing fish and chips at a shop in Torpoint recently, I feel in a good position to compare this place against them. Overall, completely dissapointed and won't bother again.

I went for the chicken kabab and chips and my wife the fish and chip. Excellent. Chips are great. Service great. Fish great and I loved my chicken. Big portions too.

Fish and chips are excellent, the fish is more of a whale and the chip portions are HUGE !! Never had a bad take away from here but the wait to order is a little long , I always phone through first !

We pre-ordered fish and chips for Francine’s, explained on the phone that we didn’t want the order cooked too early and drying out, we were told the order would be finished off when we arrived.The shop is nice and clean and well set out plus the staff are efficient and friendlyPicked up the order at time arrange, three adult cod and chips and one adult haddock and chips, curry sauce and mushy pees.Had about a five minute drive home, sat down to eat our tea as soon as we arrived home. The batter was greasy and soggy the fish inside was cooked beautify and fresh, the chips had be waiting around in the warmer consequently had dried out. Curried sauce and mushy pee were very nice, good portion size and reasonably priced. Could have been better, would I visit again, not sure.

Francines is our local chip shop and has been for several years now, portions and food is always delicious and hot. My husband phoned through our order last night and collected soon after, food was lovely as ever but portion of chips and scampi did seem a bit less than usual but we shall continue to visit our local chip shop.

Me and my partner regularly come to francines. We like to have this as a treat, the portion size is huge. With a large portion you could easily feed 3 adults. Would recommend this chippy. Chips are always cooked lovely.

Massive portions, and the kids portions would fill up an adult, very tasty, and not soggy at all.

We bought fish & chips here before and very good now I think they must have changed management as the chips was pre cooked and dried up.The fish was greasy and over cooked and mostly batter will not recommend very disappointed

Had 2 large fish n chips. Huge fish and lots of nice chips, but unfortunately the fish was bit dry. I did comment to my mrs, that I like it cooked fresh but it was taking longer to cook than usual! Thus, it was in the fryer too long, our opinion though.

Just picked up a fish and chips from Francines having enjoyed our meals in the past. Disappointed i'm afraid to say, although the portions are still generous, and the service good, the quality was lacking compared to last time. Chips had been under the lights for too long (dry) and the fish wasn't nearly and crisp and delicious as the last time, and now unfortunately, means we have to look around for another chippy.

Has anyone else been disappointed recently. Complained about six weeks ago as there was little Fish just pockets of air and Batter. Response was poor and no replacement. Since the Fish has become poorer and poorer and very greasy. Certainly not worth the cost, the Fish used to be so nice oh well. Fryer Tuck Fish and Chips although slightly dearer was worth the extra cost. Will not be returning to Francines.

Hubby and I are loyal to Jolly Roger's in Buckfastleigh, but as we now live in Plymouth we thought we should try a more local chip shop and chose Francine's. Mistake. Tough, flavourless chips and cod that looked as though it had been flattened with a steak mallet before being fried in over-salted batter. After a couple of forkfuls each we threw the whole lot in the bin, and then cleaned our teeth to get rid of the oily aftertaste we'd both been left with. If bland is your favourite flavour and quantity over quality is your thing you won't be disappointed. The only positive was the service, which was friendly.

What a place! Friendly staff, food cooked fresh and very tasty. Extensive menu that is very good value for money. Kids meals are really good. Will definitely be back

My son and I ordered traditional cod and chips and mushy peas. Fish was nice chips where undercooked and mushy peas where tasteless .First time I've tried this place won't bother again. Not cheap and poor quality.

There's a great choice of menu to choose from and to please all with good sized portions for your money. Be prepared to wait a little bit but well worth it as lots of food cooked to order.

We bought a fish and chip lunch on Friday 17th and it was delicious; we bought 1 pensioners special and a regular potions of fish and chips. The quality and size of the meals was very impressive. Every order is cooked to order, this might well mean longer than normal waiting times but the wait is well worth while.The service was good and we will be visiting Francine's again soon.

Well once again visited francines on route to Argyle and wow what can i say is that this chippy never dissappoints we have been visiting this chippy over a period of 18 years and again to value for money and trust me ypu get loads of food;) well worth a visit and quick service as well

I've been hearing about this place for many years . As I live on the other side of Plymouth , I haven't bothered but one day on my way home from a job. I decided to go try and see what everyone was raving about. I have to say Just as they are all saying. Chips were coked to perfection and the battered sausage was to die for
