We stayed for a long weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The room was large and very well fitted out. Lovely wooden furniture. Bathroom was very spacious and modern. Staff were extremely friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The breakfast was exceptional. We are here for dinner too both nights. The food available was of very high quality and delicious.

A fantastic selection of home cooked food. We had fish and chips and burger and chips. Both meals were very good quality and cooked to perfection. All staff are friendly and happy to help. We took our dog who was made very welcome. Can’t wait to go back again soon.

Whilst on holiday nearby we had 3 meals at the Fox and Goose and the food was excellent. The venison was the best I've ever eaten, large fillets and so tender. Very good menu and lovely, very friendly staff. We would most definitely eat there again.

Absolutely wonderful Sunday lunch, melt in the mouth beef, vegetables cooked to perfection. Lovely staff, wonderful ambience, good value for money, would definitely recommend.

We visit, fairly regularly, from Somerset to enjoy their their warm hospitality and delicious variety of meals. Usually Sunday roasts or fish based meals. On this occasion we went for dinner and chose Venison. The meat was incredibly delicious and we all agreed about the flavour, texture and complimenting jus, with its balance of vegetables provided the best we’d eaten. Congratulations to the chef and staff for a fabulous evening. I strongly recommend you to enjoy dining here.

A weeks stay in the area and a recommended visit to this restaurant. It's well off the beaten track down a narrow winding road (like most in this area..) There is nothing pretentious about the place. Welcoming staff, basic tables and seating and a menu for all to stand and choose from on the board above an arch. So the food. Well cooked and presented, but to me nothing over special and if anything a tad over-priced. Dog friendly and dog welcome - at least 3 tables had dogs with them on our visit. Would I visit again? Likely.

Great find, my wife and I had a fantastic meal, both having the Hake. It was cooked to perfection, followed with the raspberry parfait. Very relaxed and freindly atmosphere and to top it off at a really reasonable price. Will defeintly return when back in Devon.

What fabulous food this pub serves, so good actually we went twice during our holiday nearby. The staff were really friendly, two lovely girls serving at the bar and delivering to tables, nothing too much trouble for them. We had an excellent salmon dish the first night which was a generous portion with lovely sauté potatoes and beautifully cooked vegetables - we thought this was excellent value for money given the quality of it. My husband had hake on the second visit and I had their beef burger - again really well cooked and presented and generous portions. The menu is written on wall boards and there is a great selection of fish and meat dishes. We would really recommend this place, the village is only small and this is the only pub but why would you need another one when this is so good.

Our family met here for lunch yesterday. First impressions, comfortable and stylish interior. We have run a pub and my husband said that his pint of Exmoor Gold was the best kept beer he has ever had - in top notch condition. Then our various main courses arrived - all very well presented and all our meals were delicious. We look at reviews. Someone posted a very critical review of this lovely pub last month. But if you look at the 4 reviews this man has posted, negativity appears to be his thing. Our experience yesterday was all round excellent. Thank you.

A great pub and also the only place to eat in the village. The food, albeit on the expensive side for many, was great, fresh quality and really well cooked. Main course and 2 drinks for 2 came to just over £60 for Fish Stew and Chicken and mushroom pie. Service was good and the ambience was OK. 2 servers worked 36 covers so they did a great job. We enjoyed our food and expected to pay a premium for freshness and quality. Would highly recommend for service, taste, quality and portion size.

From the outside this restaurant doesn’t look much to shout about. However when we arrived we were greeted by a friendly chap who explained drinks order at the bar then the waitress would show us to our table. The bar was generously stocked with great choice and the husband was happy as they had a choice of 3 real ales! We were shown to our table and the choice on the menu was great. All handmade produce which I love to see. We decided to skip starters and opt for mains and puddings. I ordered the Venison in a black cherry and port Jus with vegetables and the most amazing roast potatoes. The Venison was to die for and melted in your mouth, cooked med-rare how venison should be. The veg was al dente just how it should be and was packed full of taste. I cleared the plate, something I don’t do that often but it was so beautiful and delicious! My husband ordered the Ribeye Steak, Black and Blue again cooked perfectly!! This came with the most amazing homemade onion rings which my husband said were amazing! I have to admit I was a little jealous. His steak came with Beautiful sautéed potatoes that tasted delicious, grilled baby vine tomatoes, and mushrooms. Again my husband cleaned his plate and was stuffed. There was too many potatoes as the portion was quite generous, they did not skimp!! My daughter decided to try the Local Ling Alfredo, served with garlic bread. Again the portion size was generous. My daughter had never tried Ling before but she said it was beautiful and moist and flakey and tasty. The pasta was cooked to perfection.The handmade garlic bread was tasty and lovely and garlicky. With 2 large pieces she was full and said her meal was beautiful! My son had the vegetarian version and similarly he said the same. His meal didn’t touch the side. He is normally a picky eater but he loved it! We were super impressed with the chef and when we found out that desserts were homemade we simply had to try pudding. I was torn between lemon cheesecake or chocolate brownie. I eventually decided on the chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. When this arrived it was a generous portion which was warm and gooey with chocolate sticks and chocolate sauce. I was in heaven! It was absolutely delicious. My son chose the brownie (no surprise there he’s a choc a holic) but with butterscotch ice cream. I was amazed the brownie beat him and he was unable to finish the last bit. My husband chose the creamy sophisticated taste of the raspberry posset. I had to be naughty and pinch two mouthfuls. Wow…..so beautiful. Our waiter was attentive and half way through our meal asked if everything was ok, to which we obviously said yes it was amazing. If you are in the area it is well worth a visit. To be honest if it hadn’t been our last night of our holiday then we would have gone back again to try other dishes that’s how good it was. I think even if it was half N hour away it is worth travelling to as it has that something special about the food. Thanks to the chef- keep on doing what you are doing as your food is Amazeballs!!!!

Been visiting for a few years, has been good food wise, though a pricey local option. Recently visited for a birthday meal with whole family and unfortunately it was seriously underwhelming. Front of house seemed to think that making personal comments about appearance of diners is somehow ok. I do not go to a restaurant to be insulted in front of my family, equally a bit odd to describe my elderly mother as ‘beautiful’. After this exchange server put hand on my shoulder, in my view they really need to learn to respect boundaries. I think the individual concerned knew they had overstepped the mark by some distance, but it really left a sour taste on the evening. Not what you expect and certainly not likely to enhance the prospects of a generous tip, which I’d usually expect to give, particularly when dining out with my kids. Other than this stand out event, steak was ok, but ok only - sinew present, in addition to the seam of fat which you expect in a ribeye, making for a chewy experience. A medium glass of wine requested turned up as a large. Others enjoyed their food and clearly still a competent set up. At the end comment around being able to remember my PIN number when settling up was also rather unwelcome (mistakenly put in wrong card of two which are virtually identical, but honestly do you really need to say anything). A rather charmless encounter and will take business to Black Venus in future.

Fantastic, friendly and full of flavour!! Found this place by chance on our way back from National Trust site, Heddon Valley. So glad we did. As a family of 4, we all agreed this was our favourite meal of the holiday. Highly recommend the Tiger Prawns, Beef Burger & Haddock & chips.
