The place we intended in Beaminster doesn't do lunch on Wednesdays so we were hunting around looking for something other than pub staples and were delighted to find the Fox & Hounds - very atmospheric, friendly staff, outside seating and the camembert, whitebait and hot smoked salmon were just what we needed. Almost the only people there so they need your custom!

We had a most exquisite meal here Saturday 16th March. The pub was highly recommended to us. Think “Country chic” and “cottage core” decor. The tables all had small vases of fresh flowers, sweet little salt and pepper grinders, and recycled glass tumblers. V prettily done. Ooh, linen napkins, too! The nibbles menu is an excellent idea as my husband and I find a starter, main and pudding too much these days. The landlady was friendly and welcoming, and the staff couldn’t do enough - attentive without being intrusive. Our waitress was intelligent, interesting and animated. We shared a dish of whitebait with homemade tartare sauce. The whitebait were done to perfection , as was our entire meal. They were very meaty little fish, and the tartare I’d like the recipe for. It was served beautifully on a little wooden board in a small pottery bowl. Our mains were sublime - steak, which melted in the mouth, and a beautiful plaice on the bone, served with samphire and new potatoes. All was plated up in a very attractive way. I love the way the sides were all brought on small wooden serving boards. Husband had a lemon meringue cheesecake served in a sweet little kilner pot. Lads, it was the bomb. Beautiful. Can’t recommend highly enough. We will definitely return.

We were treated to a lovely Sunday roast at the Fox and Hounds... more on the expensive side, but the food was delicious. My and my partners only issue was that the table was in the dark... We couldn't read the menu without using the torch on our phones and couldn't really see what we were eating!! A bit extra lighting, please .

It’s always been a great pub, we’ve been dozens of times over the years, but the food we were served yesterday was atrocious - right across the board. The standard was well below anything I’ve been served in decades. Even the chips were awful. Only frozen veg (peas &carrots) awful long life baps, overcooked and tasteless. Everything ready made from the freezer, badly cooked, badly presented and awful garnish. Still high prices too. Just yuck. Cider was nice. Staff were friendly.

We had lunch at the pub. The menu was basic but well priced and the food was good. My wife's first meal choice was not available and I did have a "Fawlty Towers" moment when asking for a bottle of wine when both my first and second selection were not available. I did noticed afterwards that the "wine cellar" seemed to be a 12 bottle rack behind the bar. Nevertheless the service was friendly. We enjoyed the meal and the wine was fine!

I could almost predict what this was going to be like the moment that we arrived from the almost apologetic face of the lady who checked us in.The building has been painted rather well with hanging baskets etc , but then when you look closely the front of the building is strewn with weeds and fag butts. The room was clean enough but the bathroom is separate with a ceiling so low you cannot stand up in it. There is consequently no stand up shower. The towels in the bathroom want throwing away they are so tired. The bedding is tiredThe bedroom walls are paper thin. The tv in the bedroom is about the smallest you can get and was unwatchable due to poor reception. The constant barking from the kennels close by keeps you awake most of the night. The food and drinks in the evening were okay and reasonably priced. That’s the only reason it gets a 2.This place looks like it’s run by people who just don’t care or who have given up.Avoid!

Stopped off for a drink. Was a bit disappointed with the inside, seemed a bit run down and lacking in attention. We sat outside on old benches and again felt that some love could be given to the front garden area. Seems a bit sad. The people talking at the bar were rude to us and made us feel uncomfortable. I didn't feel it was welcoming and will not be going back especially after seeing pictures of the fox hunt riders on the walls. Overall felt creepy.

Having thoroughly enjoyed my previous visits (with dogs) when staying in the area I was looking forward to showing my friend their hospitality. We walked through the drizzle and fields to get there and arrived slightly damp but not particularly muddy. I was stopped at the door to the bar by the Landlord(?) who asked if the dogs were muddy as they had a new carpet and didn't want dogs in there and was directed to the Skittles Bar at the rear. A reasonable enough request except I know there is a large part of the bar which has wood/stone flooring which can be accessed by a different door. Also the Skittles Bar has no natural light, was unheated and the carpet (identical to one in front bar but older) hadn't been hoovered and had food waste over it. I felt like an unwelcome guest at the wedding listening to the hum of jovial conversation in the front bar whilst sitting in the gloom. Also as the Ladies can only be accessed through the main bar, if my friend hadn't been there to hold the dogs I wouldn't have been able to use the facilities. The food is still excellent and the lady who served us friendly and welcoming but I won't return when next in area.

My wife and I and our dog Brodie were in Cattistock on lunchtime of Tuesday 17th July. We visited the Fox and Hounds and found it to be an olde world traditional pub but with some very up to date offerings. We ordered Coffee and sparkling water to drink and from the menu a cheese and pickle panini for myeslf and a Ham and mustard one for my wife. When they arrived the Mature Cheddar cheese was thick and tasty as was the pickle served in lovely crusty bread, my wife's ham was superb with a sweet tasting honey and a lot of ham as well. The portions were superb and there were even chunky chips served with the paninis. Such a change from the dreadful offering we had in Lulworth yesterday and all for under £20. This is what a pub lunch should be.

Booked lunch here last week for a group of 17 of us (10 adults, 7 kids). We basically took over most of the main room of the pub. We were asked to pre-order and were emailed a menu to choose from. This was slightly limited in comparison to the 'running' menu, but there was still something for everyone. The normal menu has a note that the kitchen is small so there may be a delay at busy times, and we assume this was the reason for our smaller menu. Much easier to cook 10 lots of one meal than 10 different dishes! It was no issue at all and we were all happy with the food we ordered.

We were staying in the village (in Air B&B) and the pub was a suggestion by the home owner. We ended up eating in the pub two nights of our stay and the food was lovely both nights. It's an old pub that could do with some smartening up but don't let this put you off. The menu is lovely and quite varied and both nights we went, the pub was packed with locals eating and drinking. (Dogs are very welcome too) We were impressed that it everything came with chips. My husband loved the lamb and my pie was one of the best I've ever had - packed with veg on the side, lashings of gravy and pastry for the bottom and top - a proper pie! My husband also loved the ale selection. Be warned, the fish cakes are enormous! If you're staying in the area, this is a lovely pub worth visiting. It's clearly at the heart of the community and we didn't feel like outsiders at all. If you're going on a Friday or the weekend, make sure you book.

On our way to Mapperton House yesterday TripAdvisor pointed us at the Fox & Hounds in the sleepy but picturesque Cattistock village. It was a scorching day so we sat at a table under an umbrella in the back garden. This has a rather harsh gravel surface explained as this is also where the villagers play Boules. A great selection of vegetarian and fish options. Good wine selection. Really accomplished. The service can be a bit slow, especially when busy and it is a pub not a restaurant (although the atmosphere is more restauranty) which can be confusing because you do order at the bar. Great food, great landlord who is up for a chat and the odd local. Also fantastic for kids as they are willing to make any adult meal in a child's portion. Definitely recommended.

If you are in the vicinity of Cattistock, the Fox and Hounds should not be missed. Located opposite a park and church, it is a quintessential English pub, right out of central casting.Larger than most small village pubs, it still feels intimate with nooks and crannies for small tables and quiet conversation. The drinks offers are the normal fare, but the food menu is where the Fox and Hounds really shines. The choices are many, varied and "un-pub" like. My friends ordered the duck confit, seabass with citrus and mango salsa and pork loin. All were delicious, of substantial portion and good value for money. We were treated to a visiting Morris dance group as we were leaving which seemed so appropriate in Dorset country. NB: Reservations are recommended and if our visit on an early Monday evening is any indication, I would definitely call ahead.

Since our very first visit there we have always felt most welcome by the owners and the locals and being able to relax there after a hectic day exploring wonderful Dorset is one of the many reasons why we keep returning to the village. The menu is good honest pub food but it's all fresh and locally sourced and cooked to a really high standard too. Called in for a quick lunch on a cold day. Very quiet in the bar. But a roaring log fire made for a cosy welcome. Excellent service. It isn't difficult to get a ham ciabatta alright; but it's challenging to get it as good as this one, with thickly cut, freshly cooked (so warm) ham, lots of mustard, a peppery salad, and some first class crispy chips. That and a pint of bitter left me a very satisfied customer.

Roaring log fires, friendly staff and locals, real ales, delicious food and reasonable prices. What more could you want from a pub?

We probably walk down to our local about once every couple of months to have a meal. You can always guarantee a warm welcome from Liz, Scott and the staff. The menu is fairly static although there is the odd variation occasionally. My favourite dish is the 'beer battered hake'. I feel the standard of food could be improved immensely with just a little more attention to detail. I usually come away feeling slightly let down. Eg the beef burger was a little dry, not enough sauce in the pasta dish, the meat was over cooked, under seasoned etc things that are easily rectified and would bring the standard of average pub food up to brilliant pub food!

Visited on a Saturday evening, having booked-just as well, as all tables taken.Great atmosphere, cosy log fire, buzz of conversation. Just what a village pub should be. Will certainly re-visit.

We first came to The Fox and Hounds by chance in April 2015 when we were looking to move in the area. We were checking out Cattistock and, as it was lunchtime, decided to get a bite to eat. What a great time we had! The pub is old and querky, the barman was so friendly and about 8 locals were sitting at the bar telling each other some real yarns. The food was excellent, in fact, we couldn't believe how good pub food could be compared from where we are from. Roll on six months and we have now moved down in the area and have friends of a friend we were introduced to, who live in Cattistock coincidentally! So we have been back for dinner and to watch a bit of the skittles match in the next room. Another excellent meal and all four of us had different choices and the ambience warm and friendly. Quintessentially how a village pub should be, which is the focal point of a village with good beer and excellent food, not to mention how friendly everyone is.

We had a very poor Sunday Lunch at the Fox and Hounds today. The roast pork was barely warm and chewy like shoe leather and served with veg that was hardly cooked and worst of all the plates were stone cold. Roast potatoes and the Yorkshire pudding were OK but not great. Three of our party had ordered the Roast beef but were told a few minutes later that they only had one portion left, so only my father was able to try it. He said that it also was tepid and very tough. Some of our party had the fish and chips which was acceptable but when we were asked if we wanted any sauces we asked for Apple sauce to go with the pork and Tartare sauce for the fish. A few minutes later the waitress returned with a bowl of mayonaise for the fish which she said was tartare ,and we were informed there was no apple sauce. I am writing this review in the hope that the Fox and Hounds can accept constructive criticism and things will be better in the future. It was definitely not good, sadly our worst Sunday lunch in a long time.

If you wanted to describe everybody's idea of a typical English pub, in a typical English village, then this is it. Dorset people are probably the most welcoming ever (this from a Northerner!). The pub manages to combine being a real community pub, with excellent food and service. It even has a massive open fireplace. Real ale and REAL CIDER.

We were out for an all day walk and had planned to stop at the Fox and Hounds for lunch. That worked out perfectly as they open at 12 noon. A great local pub in the village with homemade food. Good beer. My dining companion had a incredible cheeseboard for 6.50 that had three Dorset cheeses as well as apple chutney. I had a home-made steak and ale pie with mash and veg. all lovely and reasonably pricedThe perfect pub lunch and relaxing drink. Publican very friendly.

The Fox & Hounds its well worth visiting. Its the country pub that we conjure up in our minds eye, its the one that we wish they were all like. Its quirky, its old, its full of character, the walls aren't straight, the floor isn't flat, the bar is ...nothing special and old piece of wood. Everything is old. But make no mistake, this is a popular place, you have to book if you want a meal. The food is unexpectedly good. In reality, of course it is, the place was full and they were turning away customers. The food is the star, the surroundings merely the setting. Its no wonder it has been voted Number 1 for pub grub in Dorset. It might well be one of the best places for pub grub in the country...period.We will be back!

The pub itself is a nice traditional country pub and the staff friendly, foods ok and well kept beers, but the night we were there a few of the locals made us feel unwelcome, otherwise a good pub.

Had a large family celebration and found the staff to be very helpful prior to the event in terms of planning and throughout the evening itself. We had a large party but the landlord was accommodating, food was good and the evening was a great success.

First impressions on arriving in the pub, were amazing. Friendly staff & patrons alike. Made us feel so welcome on our moving in day to the village. We arrived after a stressful move, so tired & hungry. Didn't book a table, just ordered at the bar & voila our meal arrived in due course. Can't remember what I ordered, but seem to remember it was on the specials board. Might have been venison & mash, plus locally sourced veg. What a treat.

We visited on two consecutive evenings, one as a party of 8 and the second night as a couple. Excellent service, good choice on the menu. Children's portions of adult meals also offered. Steak bavette and duck were delicious. Very reasonably priced. Dog friendly. Would definitely come back.

Went for lunch on 3rd July - amazing meals. All beautifully cooked and presented, and plenty to eat. Only difficulty was - after starters and mains we were so full we couldn't manage desserts - but would have really liked to try them!! There are so few really good unspoilt village pubs around - but this one is an absolute gem and well worth visiting.

There cannot be a more authentic, traditional English village pub. A lovely location with an unspoilt pub with good pub grub far better than the majority of similar country inns. Very drinkable beer well served by efficient, hard-working staff. Food delivery can be a trifle tardy but who cares. A good, invariably friendly clientele, a hum of probably oft-told tales and nothing but smiles- just a good place to be. .

Absolutely lovely place, my partner and I were celebrating and went for a nice date here. Great food with lovely decor, chef even refunded us the price of our desserts as they weren’t satisfied with the presentation (still tasted amazing). Will definitely be back again this summer, would recommend.

I visited Summer Lodge with a friend to celebrate her birthday. We ordered a cream tea which was advertised as freshly baked scones daily. We were shown to the drawing room and sat down. Then a waiter came to ask what tea we would like and tried to joke with us which was not necessary. The scones arrived and were frozen in the middle! So much for freshly baked scones! When I complained the waiter then said ' so much for our freshly baked scones!' Then joked that we must have got them out of our handbags! Totally inappropriate. Not a great experience for parting with £34 for 2 cream teas! The building and setting is very lovely. A shame that our experience was not up to expected standards.
