Very old village pub came recommended by the cottage we were staying in. Young lads working that evening were extremely welcoming. Plenty of choice on the menu and for the quality of the meal very reasonably priced. Service was leisurely but efficient. There was nothing to fault in fact it was one of the best meals we have had in a long time Would definitely recommend and visit again if in the area

If there was a definition for “Country Pub” in the dictionary, it would definitely (in my eyes) have “The Fox & Grapes, Hawarden” printed next to it! From start to finish of our visit, that being a family of 8, 5 adults and 3 children under 16 our time at the Fox was OUTSTANDING! Our waitress was so attentive and very friendly, she obviously cared about the standard of service that was being delivered throughout the evening - nothing was too much hassle for her! We ordered a few starters and mains and every single item of food was AMAZING! The duck bon bons were mouth watering! We wish we’d have ordered more portions of these as they were that good! I personally had the buttermilk chicken burger with chorizo and cheese which was accompanied with fries a couple of onion rings and I asked for a side of beans and asked for no slaw - this was absolutely no problem so as a fussy eater - I was ecstatic that the chef also seemed to care about his customers and the food they were being served! All other members of the party thoroughly enjoyed their meals too! We then proceeded to carry on our time in the bar at the Fox where we were greeted by the Landlord, Patrick. What a gent! He made sure we were all served and happy and also questioned us on our meals - this goes a long way, knowing what your customers want. In the pub there was a brand new dart board, games on the shelf in the corner and also a pool table outside which was under a shelter which was great! Loads of outdoor seating was available, some in the sun, some under a shelter with a heater if it got cold in the evenings - can’t wait to come back and sit in the sun! Shout out also to George behind the bar - what a character he is! Bubbliest person I’ve ever met! Thank you so much for a FANTASTIC evening and for being so attentive and friendly! Looking forward to returning again soon!

We were greeted by a very stressed lone waitress who clearly had too much to do, proving their shortage of staff, we were soon taken to an unmade table in a freezing cold room, waited about 15 minutes to get cutlery and then another 10 to order a drink, which took a further 15 minutes to arrive, having already been here for 40 minutes we ordered our food. Three beef roast dinners. After nearly an hour of waiting for food it arrived in small portion, with the worst meat that I’ve seen being served in an establishment that offers food, out of three pieces, half of one was edible, the so-called roast potatoes were practically boiled and the gravy was like cement. It’s vital to express how poor this meal was the dingy atmosphere with dark lighting and stressed staff made for a horrific experience. Having waited an hour for the meal, I was extremely hungry and was excited for the only edible looking thing on the plate, the Yorkshire pudding, as I cut into it DISGUSTING RUNNY MIXTURE RAN OUT, the inside clearly wasn’t cooked!, which made me wonder about the cleanliness of the other things on the plate! We consulted the manager who made adjustments to the bill, we were told by a member of staff that a new menu is being implemented shortly and that the owner is currently the chef. If this place continues to serve an operate as we experienced it will have health standards close it down! The cleanliness of the toilet and sink! A forensic team would have a field day, don’t waste your time money or efforts this place is a hovel.

We had a 'meal' at The Fox and Grape this evening. We first arrived at the bar where the barmaid had ZERO warmth or welcoming personality whatsoever...she was stuffing her face and vaping! The food took an eternity to come..but when it finally arrived.the food was disgusting! We were told the risotto had no peas in it and when it arrived it was full of peas.....it was a good job my cousin wasn't allergic!!!! ...when this was pointed out there was little to no concern ...We quickly paid for our 'food' and ran across the road to The Glyn ....a different level of care altogether...Great staff and delicious puddings.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ABSOLUTELY AVOID COMPLETE AND AND UTTER SHAMBLES. *Service- shocking. -poor welcome -shabby unprofessional attire and attitude from female waitress, felt like she had just rolled out of bed. -sloppy service, vaping behind the bar whilst serving us drinks 👀 -eating her dinner behind the bar when we went to pay (still hadn't collected our dirty plates nor brought over the desert menu or bill) -served a hot plate using her sleeve!!!🤢 *Menu- we chose this place because of the menu. Unfortunately the food was poor. Vegetarian lasagne was watery and like a pasta soup with a hard piece of parsnip floating in it. Four of us ordered the risotto. Asked before ordering if it contained peas. Miss I love to Vape went to the kitchen to "check' and assured us there were no peas... Waited an age for our food to arrive because apparently they were "slammed" (despite there only being two other tables with customers in the entire place) only for the risotto to arrive full of peas. Queried it only to be told that she had asked him to make it without peas and she had "watched him the entire time he was making it (complete lie as she was behind the bar vaping away) and he didn't add the peas, it must have been from when the sauce was made yesterday" 🤢🤢 It was supposed to be a rissotto but there was barely any rice in it and was basically a bowl of mush. Grim. Couldn't bare to stay there any longer so we paid and one of our group popped out to find a different place to finish our meet up. Found a wonderful place across the road called the "Glynne Arms" the experience could not have been any more different. Attentive staff, quality deserts, lovely atmosphere and excellent staff- would highly recommend.

A nice local pub with tasty food, generous helpings and at a reasonable price. Disappointed that they had to search to find a table, especially as we'd booked a couple of days before. Not enough people were waiting on tables, so the service was a bit slow, and we struggled to attract anyone's attention to order desert. We didn't realise we'd booked the same day as Quiz Night, which seemed to be given more attention from the staff.

We have read many reviews saying how amazing the food is and decided to try it for ourselves; unfortunately the food did not live up to the reviews yesterday evening (27/2/24). My husband ordered the fish & chips; the batter was tough & chewy and the "chips" were basically boiled potatoes that had been nowhere near a fryer. I ordered the crab and mussel linguine with lime and coriander & dipping bread. The mussels were overcooked, not sure what the raw bits in the linguine were and there was no hint at all of the lime and coriander; the only thing to dip my bread in was some 'sludge' under the pasta. My husband complained of feeling unwell within an hour of us eating and threw his entire meal up less than 5 hours later, which is extremely unusual for him. There was one member of staff on duty and she was covering both the bar and waiting on in the restaurant; she was doing an amazing job and all with a smile on her face. She was their saving grace. Will not be going back and - based on this experience, never will.

Not good, first and last time we will go. My wife and I visited last night, 27/02/24,. I had the Beer batter fish and chips, the batter was tough, without any hint of beer flavour. The chips were boiled and had definitely not been fried. My wife had the crab and mussels, the mussels were overcooked with little or no flavour. The young lady, who was by herself, was a credit to the place, running the bar, taking food orders, seating customers who wanted food, serving them drinks and bringing their food out, she was always smiling and cheerful. Its a shame, it’s a beautiful place.

The Guinness was served to perfection, as you can see from the attached photo. Stayed for dinner later and can’t fault the portion size or quality. The fish and chips were very good. Arrived unannounced wanting a table for two after having a great meal a year or two ago. Pub now quite bare except for Christmas trees, woman’s toilet unclean and nasty. An older fella served at the bar while we waited for our table. The table hadn’t been prepared, no cutlery and appeared un wiped. The meal choice was basic pub fare and what we had was hot and edible. We cleared the plates. Service was ok staff appeared nice enough and chatty.

Having previously enjoyed 2 family meals at the Fox and Grapes earlier this year I hate to leave a negative review. However, on this visit the food was the worst I have been served in a very long time. My son booked a table at the Fox and Grapes over the phone, when we arrived there was no record of our booking, however we were shown to a table. The table was located by a window which was rusty and there was water all over the window sill. It felt cold and damp. It was at least 30 minutes, and after a reminder, that someone came to take our drinks order. We knew that there was a large party in the pub and so accepted this delay. Having waited so long we placed our food order at the same time. I ordered fish and chips having seen another guest eating what looked like a nice meal. When mine eventually arrived it was cooked to a crisp - the batter was chewy and the fish tough. Two of our party ordered the Steak and Landlord Pie, this proved to be a small portion of pie with uncooked pastry and only 3 small pieces of meat. My grandson ordered a chicken burger - again this was overcooked and he could only eat the edges as the middle was tough. Lastly my husband had the beefburger which he described as gritty! The service, which had previously been a highlight of our visits, was also poor. When paying the £95 bill I did highlight that I was not happy with the standards. The very nice lady behind the bar apologised but no discount was offered, not that it would have helped as the food was so bad, I very much doubt we will return. The next day we had excellent food and service at the the Hawarden Farm Shop.

Arrived but the booking I made a month ago there was no record of. Music very loud had to ask for it to be turned down we were just left with a menu to look at , not guided to a table, after 15 mins had to ask for our order to be taken. Another 30 mins wait for food when my meal arrived no peas on the plate and two pieces of soggy bread and butter draped over the fish, had to ask for cutlery as well. No customer service at all! We’re told the owner was in Mexico! He needed to be there to sort chaos! Wouldn’t recommend

Called in for lunch today but ended up not eating because it was freezing in there, the heating was on in the toilets though. Which brings me to the cleanliness - the toilets were dirty and messy, and the rest of the pub needed a good clean, in fact it’s looking really scruffy and tatty, it needs properly decorating. There was no atmosphere, no attention to detail, it’s an absolute shame, it used to be a great pub. Come on, make more effort! We went to the Running Hare instead, it was warm in there, and a lot busier.

The staff are amazing and very accommodating for us all, as mentioned before the side room was a bit chilly ( but it was 1 degrees outside) but they soon found us another table in the main bar. The Sunday roast was outstanding, all served fresh and hot. The deserts were also amazing!! Then free doggy ice cream for our 2 pouches. The prices are also very reasonable too. A special mention to jimmy, our host. Wonderful attentive man who looked after us so well. Went for a big family dinner, told the seafood chowder isn’t a soup (it definitely is) what we ended up having was a dry seafood stew with the crispiest bread possible. Dry chicken burger. The veggie goats cheese lasagne was mush and no goats cheese to be seen. Can’t remember everything else we had but it was all rubbish. The waitress used her hoodie sleeve to carry our plates to the table and described dishes as “I have no idea what that is”. When we needed more cutlery on the table they were placed down bare fingers on the top that enters your mouth - lovely!!! Only saving grace is the bill was reduced but I’d have rather walked out.

Family of 4 visiting for a meal. We were seated in the little side room to the left as you enter the pub. It was a little cold and I didn’t want to risk turning the heater on as there were no legs on it and it looked a bit dodgy. Anyway the food wasn’t great overall. My partner had the chicken tikka with rice and Nan and he said that was nice but not enough of it. He ordered cheesy chunky chips and they seemed nice too to be fair. My and my son decided to just have deserts and mine was the chick fudge cake with cherry flavour and ice cream. Was nice enough but would have expected a slightly bigger slice for £6. My youngest has the kids brownie and ice cream. He complained it was dry and horrible to so said let me try and was shocked it wasn’t just dry it tasted stale. Then my other son tried it and said the same. When asked if all was ok I said yes apart from that and they said they would tell the kitchen. It was taken off the bill to be fair but he wasn’t offered anything else. My eldest had sausage mash and gravy and said it was nice enough just lots of lumps in the mash. The youngest then decided to want food (given he has only ate the scoop of ice cream) so we order kids pizza. It’s looked amazing but was full of grease under the base so he ate half a price and spat it out on the plate (sorry) we didn’t bother mentioning this we paid and left. Shame really, the locals were chatty and friendly and the service was good apart from offering to rectify the stale brownie for the 10 year old. We wouldn’t return there is nicer around.

We will never return to eat here We came here for a birthday meal and there was 12of us. Menu sounded nice and we ordered garlic mushrooms.vegetarian lasagne. Expensive but we hoped it would be worth it as we were hungry. Garlic mushrooms barely any mushrooms in this pool of creamy something that had no garlic in it and barely warm. My friend couldn’t eat her cold one which came late as obviously forgotten. Our ‘lasagne’ was tiny bowl of mush that was barely warm and no salad, nothing to go with it but two tiny bits of bread. For the expense I have had a full sized lasagne, with salad and chips for less and tasted better and actually hot. We had thankfully ordered chips between us and these were the only hot food on our table. We were so hungry we forced it down for the sake of not creating a scene at a birthday party but I will never waste my time or money here again and neither will any of our company. The place looks old and tired and dirty. The mens toilets were two portaloos outside with no lights. Run by children with no idea of a high standard A real shame.

Me and my mum went here on Saturday for some lunch. Haven't been here since it has been taken over. Was fairly busy and we grabbed a course or of menus and decided on the tuna melt with chips and also the steak sandwich with chips. Wait time was about 30 mins which isn't too bad. I ordered smoked cheese on my steak sandwich also but they had left it off. I would have said something when food check was done but I'm afraid this didn't happen. I've worked in hospitality before and golden rule is to ensure customers are happy with their food the question was only asked when the young girl cleared the table and when I told her she forgot to write it on the order. Apart from that the food was really nice and good value for money. The place could do with being cleaned throughout though as the blinds were thick with dust.

Disappointed, really hoped this was going to be a good Sunday lunch with friends. Really want to support local pubs . But the 4 of us all had a poor meal. Everything seemed heated up, nothing fresh at all . 4 of had wanted to order roast beef, we were told only enough for 2. But table arrived after us ordered beef and got it . The 2 who had beef found it was tough and very fatty . The Turkey didn’t even look like Turkey and 2 very small thin slices . The lamb didn’t taste of lamb and appeared pre sliced and just heated up . Roast potatoes were very hard and really difficult to cut . The meals were not placed on the table but almost dropped down on the table . When we asked for mint & horseradish, again we’re almost dropped on the table and no spoons to serve it . Bottle of Malbec not cheap at £ 25 was poor quality. When asked if we’d enjoyed meal at the end we said tbh no . And we’re just told to try the menu during the week . I asked if it was the same chef which was confirmed . So we won’t be back. One young waitress with pony tail was pleasant and professional, pity we couldn’t say the same for the other waitress who practically threw the plates down .

Others in the group were complaining also especially the veggie wellington , like a rock and very little of it. I have eaten there a few times, not recently and always found it to be good.

Where do I start? We have been coming to The Fox and Grapes for many years and recently since new management and never had an issue. Today we had booked for Sunday lunch..we arrived on time..the car park wasn’t full by any means. We were shown to a small table in the bar?? When I asked why we couldn’t eat in the restaurant we were told it was full!! A waitress took our order and 40 minutes later nothing was forthcoming out of the kitchen, I asked how much longer it would be and literally within 30 seconds it appeared. The soup had a skin on it and the lettuce leaves were hot!! Enough said about the starters. We had ordered two roast dinners and after another halfhour we decided enough was enough..paid what was owed and left. It is such a shame.. and a disappointment. There were 3 waitresses behind the bar..on occasion one would go into the kitchen and mostly return empty handed..on occasion with food. How do they know when the dishes are ready..it seemed very haphazard to me! I am afraid we won’t be returning..there are other places that do Sunday lunches. So sorry to write this review..I was so looking forward to my lunch,

Great pub with loads of drinks choices. Well priced, tasty food (loved the chicken club sandwich) topped off by excellent friendly staff. A credit to the village.

This pub changed hands some time ago and became a NON dog friendly pub. I, along with many locals, stopped frequenting it because I used to visit at the end of a dog walk. We decided to try it again today for my Mother’s birthday lunch. We were the only people eating, there were 5 of us. They had no Bombay gin, no slimline tonic and the service was slow in spite of the fact that we were the only diners. The avocado on my Mother’s meal was under ripe, too hard for her to eat, and the other meals were underwhelming. Two people were turned away because they had two very small, well behaved dogs in arms. It is not as if they could afford to turn away custom. There were only 3 other people there the whole time we were, and this was a Saturday lunchtime. This pub used to be busy and vibrant, especially at the weekend. The menu used to be interesting and tasty with a fabulous tapas range. It is now drab, quiet with a boring menu. I cannot see it surviving unless it changes it’s menu, service speed and dog policy. On a bright note, Emily who looked after us was lovely, and was most apologetic for the shortcomings. It will be back to the Crown and Liver from now on.

We were at the Fox & Grapes on Christmas Eve. The food was very good, the service excellent and there was a lovely atmosphere. The two drawbacks were their lack of beer selection which could be improved and one area which could have done with updating the decor.

Was going to give 4 stars as trying to get in the car park is a nightmare, I ended up parking elsewhere and walking. The tiny gap that doesn't look like it would fit a car, does indeed fit a car perfectly fine and the car park is to the rear. Felt the menu was a good mix to suit all tastes, although a few more vegetables wouldn't go a miss with the main meals. The service was prompt. Prices OK.

We went in the Fox & Grapes last Sunday for Lunch, I have to say the atmosphere was lovely and the young man who served us was very attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. I had messed up the time of our arrival online which was quickly sorted out on the phone by a lovely young lady, who also didn’t get cross when I had to call her back to add my son, his partner and room for a Highchair for my Grandaughter💗 Our table was ready with the Highchair on our arrival. Third time we have enjoyed Sunday Lunch at The Fox & Grapes, and we are looking forward to our fourth visit very soon. Keep doing what you are doing Jason Mıghty!

We visited with our 2 young children for lunch before going to the Hawarden Christmas Fair, completely unplanned! I've lived a mile down the road for years now and never been. It is your bog standard traditional British pub; cosy welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. I was a bit wary as my kids are 2 and 4 so I wasn't sure if we would be welcomed but I had nothing to worry about. Nothing was too much bother and service was quick and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious, freshly prepared. They did make a slight mistake with our order but this was rectified straight away with no bother. Will definitely be back, hopefully without the kids next time so I can try some cocktails ( I had a sneaky peak at the menu and they sound amazing!)

My husband and I had a beautiful meal here last night for our wedding anniversary. I had chicken roulade and hubby had fish n chips (second choice as steak & Guinness pie sold out). Both meals were beautifully presented by lovely staff who were very attentive. Drinks are reasonably priced too. Definitely recommed and can't wait for next visit soon.

£9 for fish and chips. Over priced and poor selection of food for a fish and chip shop. They have an extensive menu but hardly anything ready. The fish was grey which indicates it's poor quality.

We went as a group of residents for a day Out and it was great...we had a carvery meal which was excellent followed by games of bingo and play your cards right then there was an entertainer on so we could dance or just sing a long to the music. Bar drinks were very reasonably priced
