We visited originally in the Covid period and had a lovely breakfast sitting outside. We decided to go again when we revisited and the food was fabulous. My wife and I both had the seafood chowder special and we finished with a lime crème brûlée to share. The food was simple and really tasty, the team looking after us were lovely friendly people too. Definitely worth a visit.

Visiting Ulverston for the day we noticed this Cafe had good reviews so decided to give it a try. We waited at the door to be seated as instructed (my Wife, our four year old and our dog), the owner looked at our Son and said “are you going to be good ?”. At this point and against my better judgment we went inside. The Cafe was clean and decor quirky, however the food was quite underwhelming, as it wasn’t expensive we left the majority of it and never complained. When the waitress (I assume the owner) cleared the table we were not asked if everything was ok and within a minute or two we were presented with the bill. Again we didn’t complain and were quite relieved to exit the premises. Of course there’s a place for retro/quirky eateries but not for retro/quirky/unfriendly service/food ! The owner was quite abrasive and seemed quite disinterested in making it a friendly and welcoming environment. I scored it two stars as our dog was given a bowl of water.

Another visit to what is now, our favourite cafe...not only because of the delicious food and excellent coffee, but because we always feel so welcomed and comfortable. Had the jacket potato with chilli filling....beautifully spiced, and followed by apple crumble and cream. Yum! So chuffed to have found this happy place

We've just sited our caravan on a seasonal pitch near Ulverston and pop in for bits and bobs. We found this gorgeous cafe this weekend and we were blown away by the lovely Jane and Sam and their wee cafe. We only had a snack this time.... freshly poached salmon in a lemon mayonnaise and a tuna sandwich. It was delicious. Quirky cafe with a great atmosphere, friendly and funny hosts and, amazing food. This has become our weekly go to place on our weekend excursions....please visit and treat yourself! (I won't mention Sam's jokes....but will mention Jane's lovely smile. As you can most probably tell, we loved it. Paul and Scott

I must have walked past this little place so many times and actually hadn’t realised it was a cafe! A wonderful and unique eatery where everything around you is available to buy! The true star of the show is the food. The fish chowder is delicious, as was the apple crumble. I can’t wait to go back and try some more of the dishes from the menu. Friendly service and delicious fresh food.

I have to be honest I was a little put off by the limited menu but how wrong I was. This dog friendly cafe is eclectic and utterly, most definitely welcoming. The food is all freshly prepared by Sam and Jane is friendly and helpful at front of house. You can't help but look around at all the old memorabilia that is the decor, most of which is for sale! The specials boards contain delights that are not always found in chain cafes that is for sure. Hearty homemade soups and wonderful puds. I didn't try their homemade lemonade or limeade but I did hear others complimenting it. All I can say is you should not visit Ulverston and now pop in and try their food and drinks. I even left with a couple of wooden brushes that were on sale.

We came across Fourpence Cafe by chance when visiting Ulverston. What a discovery! We enjoyed Sam's Seafood Chowder served with a lovely fresh generous warm bread roll. The soup was superb and a meal in itself and would not have been out of place in a Michelin starred restaurant. We were warmly welcomed by Sam, immaculate in his chef's whites who had strayed into the cafe from the kitchen just as we arrived. Our coffee was offered with hot milk and was delicious. There was a stream of customers entering the cafe who were obviously regulars and greeted by Jane. The array of curios, hats, hatboxes and memorabilia crammed around the walls of the cafe and available to purchase was fascinating and contributed to an unforgettable visit. We will be back!

We have just had breakfast at this super cute and quirky cafe and we will definitely be back! My husband had the full English which he said was cooked perfectly, using very good quality ingredients. I had the baked eggs Provençal style which were absolutely delicious - two eggs in a gorgeous herby tomato sauce and baked in the oven, served with fresh warm brown bread and butter. So tasty. All washed down with a pot of tea for two. Lovely friendly service and so much to see and for sale, including the table and chairs we sat at! Dog friendly too and provided a bowl of water for our little dog. We’re only visiting Ulverston for the day but will make a beeline for this cafe if we return!

Wonderful little cafe and collectibles shop. Like going back to a more elegant friendly time. Jane and Sam are lovely hosts who really care about what they do. We rediscovered them today after more than ten years. We used to go regularly to their place over near Carnforth which was the Hat Trick Cafe. It was a delight to see them again and enjoy tea and coffee with home made scones and fruitloaf snacks. The cafe is quirky, but really interesting, and we met some of their regular customers who were charming and very friendly. If you love something different that takes you back to the days when dining was a treat to be savoured, then THIS is the place to be. My wife and I will be back again soon. Ulverston has some quality attractions including the Laurel and Hardy Museum and much more as well. The whole area is a smashing day out. Dont miss animal park too.

A great find for a fairly early morning coffee and cake. We were very glad that the rest of Ulverston appeared to be shut.Very friendly service. An excellent coffee with toasted fruit loaf (recommended) for two, and all for under £10. (When we visited, the minimum order value for card payment was £10).Eclectic surroundings, with antiques and bric-a-brac crammed into every inch. Beware of the cuckoo clocks. Most of the furniture was for sale, but we were reassured to learn that nobody was going to buy the chairs out from under us.For those transiting from the bus or the railway station to the start of the Cumbria Way, this is directly on your route and makes for a great start to the walk.

Having been recommended by a friend and read the reviews we passed through Ulverston on Market Saturday. Lots of fun. Arrived at the Four Pence; A table for 4 and 2 for 2 were empty. We were in luck. When asked if it was a table for 4 we said “there are 6 of us”. (4 adults and two teenagers).“We don’t do 6.” Was the curt response.“We’re happy to sit separately?” I replied.[Just to fill in the imagery: I’m stood there with my walking stick and sunflower lanyard, clearly disabled. My wife and two children.]The response was bemusing. “Oh, okay.” it was dower and disgruntled reply. It came across rude.Sometimes people can just be having a moment, I come from a background of customer service and have worked in restaurants. Why make potential customers think twice about whether to come in? Maybe they are doing well for themselves and can pick and choose customers. This certainly isn’t most people’s experience here. In a post-lockdown scenario there are plenty of mitigating factors. However, we were about to sit and have lunch, 6 covers. There were two other tables with customers and there is no hustle and bustle. It’s pretty chill. But it was my mum’s 80th. It hadn’t started well and my gut said move on. We decided against it, fearful the experience would go further down hill. I said, “we’ve decided against it because your response felt rude.”Here is an easy opportunity to rectify any misunderstanding . . . Perhaps a “sorry” and we can hit reset? The hostess continues to insist they don’t seat sixes.I replied that we would’ve been happy to sit apart. They would get the same money. The male host then came to engage. (I don’t appreciate someone stepping into my space and squaring up against me. He clearly wasn’t there to hearing us and just in case I don’t understand they don’t have table for 6, he repeats that point. I simply reiterated. “We had been happy to sit as a two and a four on separate tables, that was already resolved. But I’m letting you know that the reason we’re leaving is that you’re coming across rudely.”I didn’t add aggressive. But his arrival and proximity was poorly considered. We left. That was our experience.

We visited fourpence cafe because it was dog friendly. Needs to advertise this better. Anyway, the soup was fabulous as was the famous fresh lemonade and the welcome from Jane and Sam was so friendly and attentive. Next time we are in Ulverston we will be back

I was a little hesitant to walk through the door as there was an unfamiliar smell and wasn't sure if it was good or bad.

Possibly one of the most quirky places we have visited and certainly not a typical cafe but you will not be bored with all the unusual items available to peruse and buy. The food was absolutely out of this world with one of the nicest beef chilli dishes and Fish Chowders we have ever tasted. I wouldn't hesitate to come back and from listening to other customers it appears that the cafe has a lot of regulars. They don't serve Coca Cola but they make their own lemonade & Limeade and it's very refreshing.

Brillante.

Sorry but okay food with dining room full of strange clutter & a dirty tablecloth on our table to eat off. Definitely a unique quirky experience, but really shouldn’t be the top rated cafe/ restaurant in Ulverston.

This little café is there to be appreciated. Full of trinkets and goods, your eyes wander to the hats and clocks that adorn the walls (as well as some items for sale). But take some time to savour the food on offer and try to resist a cake to follow!! I had the raebit with a veggie topping and wished I had more time for that cake but had to dash. Must leave more time for cake next time. And a gorgeous homemade lemonade too

No te pierdas.

Jedes Mal aufs Neue.

After reading previous trip advisor reviews we deliberately set out to find this gorgeous cafe/curiosity shop. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent, freshly cooked and using fresh ingredients. The owners were equally friendly and informative. Well worth a visit.

I visited this cafe off a recommendation from a friend. I had never been but she told me great things about it. I visited during the busy Dickensian weekend and I wanted somewhere for a quick cup of tea. Although the cafe was busy, the lady in charge found room for us. It is quaint and quirky and well worth a visit. I could spend hours looking at all the photos on the wall and artefacts that give this cafe its charm. A hidden gem!!

Consistently high quality and tasty food served by lovely people! Don’t be put off by the quirky decor, this place is a delight. We’ve been frequenting Fourpence Cafe and its predecessor the Hat Trick Cafe for more than ten years and if anything, the food just gets better and better. Never been disappointed. Try the homemade lemonade (or limeade), the chowder and the fruit crumble desert.

I can't praise this Cafe highly enough. Right from our first visit, the service has been excellent and the staff very, very friendly. The food is always delicious and excellent value. The Cafe also has such a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere that it has now become a regular place for my wife and I to go for a tasty breakfast or an afternoon snack, relax, and also get to meet other locals. But don't think twice if you're not a local but just visiting the area, the staff are such lovely people they will make you feel so welcome. And, very important for us, it's dog friendly.

Great place for a pint with a view and a bite to eat. Fantastic place to hold your party or private event in this large space. I have been to several events held here and the food has been outstanding

The food here is UNREAL and so reasonably priced too!! So good to have a nice place to quickly nip too and grab some food in Kirkby (finally).

Decided to go here for a hot chocolate as we’d heard good things and it was pouring with rain, plus it was meant to be a holiday treat, but we were so disappointed. £10.90 for two regular hot chocolates!! We had high expectations given the menu and price but the drinks were quite small and the cups were dirty. They came with a dry finger cake and “fresh fruit” which meant three slices of under ripe strawberry (it’s October!). The hot chocolate is extremely strong and sickly. We didn’t stay long as it wasn’t particularly warm, and then the person behind the counter let their dog off the lead and let it roam free. It settled on one of the customer chairs licking one of the tables. Honestly I couldn’t wait to get back out into the rain! Wouldn’t go back.
