Never would I have expected to find a place like this in Dartmoor. Folklore is an incredible, unique Japanese fusion cafe/restaurant in Chagford, and we were so pleased to have found this place on Saturday. We had a refreshingly different choice for brunch, opting for a ramen, delicious sticky vegetable noodle dish, and gyoza to share. Service and coffee was bloody excellent too, and we loved the classic English country home interior. This place is one of a kind!

Really lovely location and staff, but the bacon sandwich was £6.50 and was just supermarket bread and a few bits of bacon. Not brill.

Best gluten free waffles we have found! Lovely staff. We arrived on a rainy Sunday afternoon in search of waffles and were gutted they had closed the kitchen. The staff we so lovely and opened the kitchen specially. Both meals were great - coffee was also perfect. Would come all the time if we were locals!

Came to the cafe with my partner & two dogs after a frosty walk along the river to a relaxed space with welcoming staff and a good selection of hipster mags to flick through as we warmed up. We struggled to choose what to eat because there were plenty of interesting things on the menu. I went for satay kimchi & my partner the poached eggs & bean crush, and neither of us us were at all dissapointed with the food we ordered but simultaneously both had food envy! Everything was well presented & cooked perfectly. This is a real compliment from me as someone with very high standards about the way food is prepared (some might call it fussy) but I have sensory issues and get put off easily when eating out. It's rare for me to finish my plate but I did. The food was simple but good ingredients and plenty of flavour. We will definitely make the trip over from Exeter soon to make our way through the menu.

This is a nice cafe, just off the main street in town. Food is reasonable but only one vegan choice and hasn't changed since I was there a couple of months ago. Cakes look really good and coffee is above average.

Friendly, with well-made coffee (though the roast was too dark for my tastes) and tasty loaded toast. Great nook at the back with folk library, toys and a sofa 👌 The cafe dog was a beauty but was also a cruiser and did try and steal from our plates! We look forward to coming back

Had a soup yesterday lunchtime at Folklore, was a vegetarian katsu soup curry, it was sublime five star. Tried to draw out the recipe but no luck. For once did not take a photo and enjoyed it so much. My wife had the winter salad, and our fiends had falafel and Satay kimchi. All were impressed and the coffee was great too

After a great breakfast…scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on proper sourdough and a very good açai bowl… we booked for dinner. EDIT as of our last visit Sep 2022 Folklore sadly no longer offer dinner except at regular events. Had a lovely relaxed evening. The fresh Brixham sea bass with pickled fennel was cooked à point with crispy skin, the sticky teriyaki tofu rice bowl hit the flavoursome veg spot after a bit too much holiday meat indulgence, the brownie was toothsome and the granita refreshing. All this, a friendly host and a murmuration of starlings. Very happy.

We were recommended to come try Folklore, and we are so glad! It was such a lovely cafe. The scandi theme that flows throughout has warm, comfortable vibe and casually very stylish. They have really kept the original feel of the building, but infused it with style! The menu is great too, we both had Full English, but I can wholeheartedly say I would eaten anything on the menu as it all sounded delicious. Thank you for the hospitality guys, it was a pleasure meeting you all 🙏🏼

We had the pleasure of staying few nights at Folklore, a little gem in the heart of Dartmoor. It’s a relaxed, homely and beautifully-designed space to hang out with great coffee, generous portions of tasty food and warm, welcoming staff. Our double room had modern rustic character (whilst avoiding feeling ‘quaint’) and was a good size, with a very comfortable bed made for holiday lie-ins. A special shout should also be given to a couple of big plusses in the en-suite – fluffy soft towels and a reliably hot shower! I only wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy a few more meals and some of the evening events; we’ll just have to book for another visit soon. Thanks Matt and team! - Bryony and Paul. X

I cannot recommend this place enough. To put it simply; great, clean plated food and a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. The Scandinavian inspiration is something a little different to what I have seen in Devon and I think it works well. After speaking to the owner and hearing what his plans are for Folklore you can't fault his ambition and ideas for the place. I will certainly keep it in mind for a weekend stay and I wish Matt and the team all the success in the future.

We stayed at Folklore for two nights with our 18 month old. The cafe has a very relaxed atmosphere with a cosy feel to it. There is a back room with a large table for meetings as well as a section with children’s books and wooden toys which our daughter enjoyed. We had breakfast each day which was delicious, the scrambled eggs were particularly good as was the coffee. The bedroom was a good size with plenty of room for our travel cot. The bed was large and super comfortable which we needed after a few days of camping. They open as a bar on a Friday night, hosted by the owner Matt and the charismatic Sam. It was a great evening with Matt cranking out some tunes on his guitar. All the staff were really friendly and we didn’t feel bad that our daughter was running about all over the place. We had a really great stay and highly recommend a visit. We wish Matt and the Folklore team all the success for the future

I came here in September as a quick stop to have breakfast while completing the Two Moors Way trail. I had the scrambled egg and bacon with bread which blew my mind. It was the best scrambled egg I have ever had. I was expecting the standard bland eggs and cheap bacon and then when it came out, the scrambled egg was rich yellow and buttery and delicious. The bacon with thick and smokey and the bread was not cheap. It is in fact the best scrambled egg I have ever had and having spent over 10 years working in hotels, I am impressed. The owner, waitress and chef were all super friendly and accommodating - especially considering how I looked - a mess having spend two nights camping already haha. I highly recommend this cafe, and wish them all the very best and every success for the future :)

Came here back in May this year and had a fantastic lunch with a warm welcome and excellent service so decided to return for another birthday celebration as we were so impressed before. Regretfully this time round it was no where near the same. As we were a big group (8 of us) we had to pre-order the food - fair enough. On arrival there wasn't great welcome and it then took about 15 minutes before coming to take our drinks order. When serving our drinks and opening the wine, the poor waiter was distracted by another customer and didn't follow though in continuing to open the bottle (which the bottle opener was half way through) so we had to finish that. Then, the food was another half an hour or so after that meaning we had been there for about 45 minutes already - bearing mind this was pre-ordered and you are limited on how long you can have the table for. When the food arrived, it was absolutely embarrassing - the portion sizes were like that of a snack. This wasn't tapas, it was an insult. The sourdough bread is £5.10 per portion and all it is is literally 4/5 slices of very small baguette bread. The so called "small-plates" were indeed VERY small. Some dishes lacked seasoning and were also bland - different or new chef perhaps? So be very cautious when ordering your food - our bill was £326.00 and we left hungry and very disappointed. Before in May we were stuffed. I have also read other people's reviews saying similar things so please do take note. It's clear the staff are either new or need training - by all means they were not rude at all, but inexperienced. We did leave them a tip out of courtesy however and didn't want to cause a fuss and complain on the day. Sadly we will not be returning, which is a real shame. Wish they had kept the same flair as before.
