Found this pub by chance and quite an experience. In such a small village the restaurant was quite outstanding, not only quality but a very interesting menu. Dry aged steaks 21 days, 30 days, 45 days & 80 days all dried on the premises! A very varied menu and reasonably priced. Well worth the visit.

It had been a while since my last visit and visited with the family. The food was excellent as was the service and really enjoyed the evening. Starters of Burnt ends & the Squid were amazing. I had the Pan Fried Tiger Prawns with Calamari Nduja for mains that came served on a crispy garlic flatbread with sides of salad and chips and this was excellent. I had no room for pudding although my daughter had the Yorkshire Pudding dessert with ice cream and caramel sauce which she loved. Look forward to next visit and recommend to anyone 👍🏻

We pop in here for lunch every once in a while and the food is genially quite nice, my favourite is the fish finger sandwich, service on the other hand is brusk and a few times just not at all welcoming, particularly at the bar. As the industry tries to get back on an even keel it more important than ever to just be a welcoming face

A very charming English Pub/Restaurant set in the centre of Claypole Village High Street with on and off street parking - Child friendly rear garden play area that in the summer boasts a pizza oven that also has Big Bertha ( A Big BBQ Oven ). The Bells regulars enjoy Real Ale rotated drinks menu and ciders and of course your lagers, for the lady you have a vast selection of gins on offer (this really is a place for the connoisseur). On today's visit I enjoyed real ale complimenting my burger meal with fries and salad that was heavenly, so much so that I was disappointed I had no room one of the Bells legendary deserts ! Yes yes you mat say but was the staff friendly and the service prompt ... completely, very happy and will return more often.

We had heard good things about this place and wanted to try it out. The one thing that I liked was that the steaks were cooked over a flame grill and the steaks were supposed to be excellent. It was Saturday night and we arrived and immediately noticed that some of the 30 day steaks were not available. We chose 6 of the 30 day aged steaks but only 3 were available so 3 of us had the 15 day steaks. The difference was massive and very disappointing. I had the 30 day and have to say it was amazing. My wife had the 15 day and it was so different. My gripe is that a pub which is so known for its steaks has very little choice on a Saturday evening! The onion rings are fabulous. The service from the staff was so friendly and efficient. I will go again.

Have been coming to The Five Bells for a long time now and I couldn't think of a better Village pub. The Staff are super friendly and every time it has been great Service. The food is outstanding with a wide variety of choices and caters for Vegetarians and Vegans. A personal favourite is the Dry Aged Steaks 😍 During Lockdown I have taken full advantage of their takeaway service which they've had many different offers on which are all great value for money. If you're in the area definitely give this local, family run, home grown business a try. You will not be dissapointed.

Had the 2-4-1 burger night takeaway and it was so good we also went later in the week and ate in. The food that has been cooked on 'Bertha' is fantastic, one of our party had a steak and said it was the best steak she'd ever eaten! Only disappointment was the the dessert menu wasn't wonderfully exciting. The staff were very pleasant and efficient and we felt very safe with the covid measures in place. Just sad that we were visitors to the area and that it's not local to where we live.

I do not normally write reviews on here but felt compelled to write one on this occasion for two reasons. The first reason is purely down to the fact that a gem of a rural pub and restaurant like this deserves it. I visited with seven other family and friends because we were told how good it was from some neighbours. They were not wrong, the food we all consumed not only looked great but was tasty, different from the normal steaks you would have and if I had any gripe about the food here it would be just to say that the portions were big and so I didn't have enough room to try one of the desserts. Between the eight of us we ordered a variety of choices from the extensive menu and not one of us had a complaint about our meal. We will definitely be returning here again. However, this brings me on to the second reason for writing this review, Unfortunately for us our first visit was on the same night as Oostende42 and I have to say she tarnished our evening. Our group of eight can be quite loud when we are enjoying ourselves but somehow she managed bring the whole restaurants attention to herself and her complaint. I will only say that it was strange the the complaint started once the four of them had consumed most of their meal and then the whole time she was complaining she continued to stuff the food she was complaining about into her mouth. She also delighted in announcing to the rest of the restaurant that small village eateries such as this one do not need the type of review she was going to write on Trip Advisor and this is when I decided that, if a review did appear, then I would write one to counterbalance what we all felt was an unfair appraisal of a hard working business trying to offer a different kind of steak experience. I felt it was so unfair to the Chef that I followed her back to the kitchen to tell her that the eight of us were very happy with our food and that she should not take it personally. We were also pleased to see a business employing younger local people and our waiter was nothing but polite and knowledgeable about the menu. So for anyone reading these reviews I would say to go and try this place for yourselves and do not be put off by what appears to be a serial complainer out to get themselves a free meal.

We had been looking forward to coming here after looking at there website, big steaks cooked to perfection in a wood fired oven on charcoal in a charming country pub and real ale whats not to like. Our group of 4 arrived early so we could have pre-dinner drinks as this is the only pub in the village, we entered the pub through a door marked lounge but there was no where to sit as all the tables were set for meals so we ordered drinks at the small lounge bar and walked through to the main bar or should I say vault, a small room with very little seating space. half of this room was taken up by a pool table and no matter where you sat you were in someones way. The real ale offering was a watery collection of basic beers and one stout. We were shown to our table and given some menus, when we asked for the steak menu the server said we had to go back to the bar to see the steak board which was 3 rooms away which we all thought was poor service. We ordered some starters and steaks but when the starters came the young server walked off and we had to ask for side plates, then we noticed the roasted garlic was missing so we again asked the server who said "do you still want it". When the steaks came they looked great and so they should at £30 each mine did not show any evidence of being cooked in a searing charcoal oven, there were no burn marks on the steak of anybodies and when I tasted it there was no char grilled taste and although it was tender it was another disappointment. We decided to complain and asked for the manager, out came the landlady who assured us the steaks had been char grilled in Bertha a wood fired char grill. To be fair to the lady she offered to replace all the steaks but we declined saying it would not be fair on here and any way the steaks were ok but only a standard taste. My T bone looked liked it had been pan fried. There was worse to come the chips were small bits of potato like they had been cut from small new potatoes and greasy, the plain onion rings were greasy and what was termed as smoked paprika onion rings were just a blob all stuck together resembling an onion Bhaji. When the bill arrived We decided to complain and ask for a reduction on the food part of the bill of 20% for an overpriced and disappointing meal which we got without hesitation. As my friend and I were in conversation about the meal with the landlady in a calm and respectful manner a man behind the bar started mumbling comments and made a derogatory remark aimed my friend, when we asked him to repeat what he said one on the kitchen staff who had joined the conversation tried to defend who we now know to be the landlord by saying the remark was about someone else he then started pacing up and down the bar clapping his hands like a demented seal very odd behavior prompting me to suggest to the landlady he might be in the wrong profession and showing a degree of arrogance towards the customer going back to the 1970's. Although the service was provided by young unskilled servers it should have been offset by fantastic food but it was sadly lacking. Perhaps the Landlady should place her husband in the dry aged meat fridge to mature a little. Sadly we will not return.

Last weekend 3 members of my family met for Sunday lunch. 2 other members were joining at a later time. The menu plus specials catered for most tastes and judging by the size of the portions there wouldn't be room for a dessert. My choice was white fish wrapped in bacon served with a green pesto sauce, with rice. Sounds a strange concoction but I recommend this for someone with a lighter appetite and wanting a change from the traditional Sunday roast. Beware if you have the roast lunch as the size of the Yorkshire pudding was eyewatering. Even though our late guests included a 7 month old baby, the staff made sure we had all we needed for their comfort plus the chef catered for some dietry allergies , to produce a full meal. Dessert and coffee followed and we didn't feel rushed to finish. The local visitors were very friendly and welcoming and I certainly would visit again. The only negative was no changing table for babies and the floor was very cold.

We have just returned from the Bells having had a gorgeous meal. It was a Monday evening and neither of us could be bothered to cook so we went out. There was a Monday night specials menu for £9.50, but also a selection of deliciousness from the full menu. I opted for Roasted Quail with a potato rosstti and wild mushrooms (£11.00) and the good lady went for rump steak (£9.50 from the Monday Specials). Youngest daughter who'd decided to accompany us went for chicken goujons from the children's menu with chips (£4.95). Apparently, they have this new Bertha cooker that cooks with wood for some meals and both the quail and steak were cooked in it to perfection. They also have their own smoker. Both had good side dishes chosen in advance from vegetables or salad and the chips with the two dishes came separately. We had to explain to youngest daughter that goujons are the shape they are when they’re cooked fresh and battered by a chef not heated in a microwave. She loved them. We also plumped for one chocolate brownie with cream for desert and one cheese and biscuits with a glass of red wine. We don’t eat out all that often, but once a month it’s nice to remind ourselves what good food professionally prepared tastes like and good value too. Well recommended, plenty of atmosphere, excellent menu and really busy for a Monday.

Despite it's rural village location, the interior of the Five Bells feels quite light and contemporary. Inside you'll find a split dining room / bar set up. I last visited on the morning of my wedding and my guests had taken over the entire dining room, relegating me to the bar. Despite that, i still managed to sink a few pint of Guinness for dutch courage and all of my friends there with me commented on what a good find this pub was, close to Stubton Hall. The bar manager we found a bit surly (we visited a total of 4 times over the proceeding months) but it didn't really bother us. The portions of food are large, with everything good quality and very reasonably priced.

We visited The Five Bells for a midweek treat and we were very surprised on the quality of food on offer especially as the pub has its own smokehouse. The food was delicious and the best pulled pork is amazing. Will defiantly be back soon.

Six of us had lunch here, having reserved a table earlier. Despite looking compact from the outside, the pub/restaurant is quite large with several, connected dining areas as well as the bars. The menu is straightforward and no-nonsense, but very well prepared and presented. Everything was delicious and reasonably priced. Special mention for our young waitress, who was cheerful and efficient.

Very 'local' feeling pub. Bar always busy with animated chatter. Recently had Sunday lunch there with a large group. Lovely atmosphere. Some food great, some not quite so good, but wouldn't choose here for an up market, fine dining experience anyway. Generous portions. Will definitely go again

Ate here on an evening recently. Found the pub to be really unfriendly unless you were a regular. Food was okay, nothing incredible, perhaps a bit over priced for the quality of produce used. I had high hopes for this place but have been left feeling disappointed. Landlord behind the bar wasn't very friendly, which I find strange, waitress was a bit more conversant thankfully. This place could be wonderful, lovely village and an attractive pub but it does lack in some areas. Glad to have tried it but won't rush back.

Went with friends for a Sunday lunch. Cosy environment in the restaurant with small rooms rather than a large dining area. Staff great and helpful to all requests. Food plentiful and home made. Desserts were particularly good. Interesting selection of real ale and cider. Recommended!

Arrived at peak time on Saturday evening without a reservation. Immediately welcomed and table found for dinner. Choice of real ales on handpump with discount to card carrying CAMRA members.Food arrived swiftly and was to a high standard. 'Large fish and chips' overflowed the plate and tasted lovely. Creme Brulee highly recommended.A bit off the beaten track but well worth finding.

After working in the restaurant and pub industry, it's entirely understandable that there are set serving times for various reasons. The kitchens have to be shut down and restarted each time, fryers, ovens, extractor fans, etc. If a restaurant's serving time states that they close at 2pm, then at 2pm the chef will have shut down all the equipment and will have probably left site. If you turned up to your flight 5 minutes late would you expect them to wait for you? Or 5 minutes after Sainsburys have closed, would you expect them to re open for you? No. The five bells is a local to me and I have never had a bad experience there, regarding opening and closing times and hospitality and politeness of any of the staff members working there. If you have an issue, try McDonald's, it's 24 hours.

I arrived on one of the hottest days of the year with two children after a long journey, desperate for some food. It was 14:05, no later as I pointed out, and I was told by an unsympathetic, unsmiling barman that the kitchens closed at 14:00, no exceptions, no possibilities of any kind of food, hot or cold. Existing customers were appalled. What a poor way to treat customers. Zero flexibility coupled with a bad attitude. That is our business gone for good, a shame as it is on a regular trip of ours and looked a great pub with great reviews.

The food was lovely here. We have been four times now and always have the choice of a very varied and fresh menu, different specials on the board every time we have been, the food is locally produced and fresh, served nicely and we have never waited LNG between courses. If you haven't got a large appetite go for the smaller meals as they are more than adequate and at least you have a chance of finishing them if you choose to have a starter as well . If not choose large meal and wear an elastic acted waist trouser or skirt lol. Every meal I have had here has been lovely, and I'm picky :) .
