Sat outside this legend of a Thai restaurant. Right next to Little Wormwood scrubs, this is Thai home cooking that makes you feel like your stomach had one big cuddle. Great selection of dishes without it being overkill. All very fresh indeed. The stir fried duck with lemongrass is knockout. Squid with lashing of fried shallots and chilli. Delicious. Didn’t take photos of other dishes as they didn’t last long… Great value, great cooking and long may it last!

If you read the preceding reviews one thing stands out...poor service. So true. My recent visit was my first and I went on a friend's recommendation that the food was very good. It was. Very good. However, the service was appalling. The staff is indifferent - at best - and otherwise just plain rude. It doesn't bear going in to detail (there's plenty in prior reviews) - suffice it so say that my wife and I waited over an hour an hour and a quarter between finishing starters and the arrival of mains. Not once in that time did anyone even come to our table to ask if we wanted anything - or to apologize for the delay. Our waiter was evidently well-practiced in avoiding eye contact as I tried repeated to get get his attention with no luck whatsoever. And that's saying something as the dining room is tiny. Now...the food did eventually arrive and it was fantastic. I want to try more things from the menu and I will. However - going forward - I will only EVER get take-out.

I go to this place regularly, i know the manager and he is a great host. He is to busy to be doing niceties that does not mean he is rude, far from it. He is professional and i always have good banter with him, when i do speak to him. I actually think he has a great sense of humour, when he is not to busy, which is rare. The food is why i go it is fantastic and amazing value...Patrick

We go regularly. The food is great. Our son goes regularly, with his friends. But... My wife and I pass by on a Saturday lunchtime, early (12:40) and ask to sit in a table outside. Ok, it's a table for 4, but the tables for 2 are barely covered by the awning, it's been raining, and the wind is from the South, so if the rain were to start up again, we would have to change table to the one we want, or go inside. There was nobody in the restaurant, inside or out. The young (male) manager informs us that we have to take a table for two, as he wants to keep the bigger table in case a bigger party turns up. My wife said that we would be quick, 40 minutes at most. She asked if any tables were booked (they weren't). It's the restaurant's prerogative to refuse us our preferred table, even if we were early, and the only customers. It was our prerogative to take our business elsewhere. Which we did.

Superb! A must for you to try. Great authentic food with lovely and friendly service. The restaurant offers halal meat and they also have a gluten free menu. The restaurant doesn't offer alcohol and clients brought their own. One Friday evening, they had 3 birthday parties: two large tables outside and one indoors. The service continued flawlessly with all staff having their smiles on and being on top of things in a relaxed manner.

Fitou's is the kind of neighbourhood place that used to be quite common and now is increasingly rare. The sort of place that you'd take your mum or your kids for an affordable celebration. Fitou's isn't licensed but the small shop next door sells wine and beer and what have you so even if you've forgotten to bring anything, it's fine. The menu includes all your usual Thai favourites like pad Thai and green/red curry and good and fresh and well cooked. If you don't like things too hot, just ask and they will tone things down for you. Equally, if you're stuck understanding the menu (not the most straightforward) the helpful staff will guide you round. Atmos is friendly and relaxed, but not grand. People come from the local area but it's not often full to bursting. Worth booking though.

We have been frequenting this restaurant since 2005 - a round trip of 60 miles from Berkshire. When it was called Number 1 it was always a warm and welcoming experience with excellent food. Since the new owner has taken over there has been decline in service but we have continued to go there due to the good food and have accepted the rudeness of the manager. Yesterday reached a nadir in terms of customer service. We had the usual brusque manner to greet and seat us followed by the uncomfortable process of giving our order to someone who could not care less. We ordered our soft drinks from the menu. Our 4 year old child has autism and will only drink Tropicana orange juice. We had brought a supply from home which he drank quickly. Fitous did not have this on the menu but the shop next door was selling it. It is a BYO restaurant and mistakenly I thought it would not be an issue to get it from the shop next door. Coincidentally, I met the manager in the shop whilst I was buying the juice and in an attempt to make conversation tried to explain that my son is autistic and will only drink this type of juice. His immediate response was to say soft drinks cannot be brought into the restaurant without his permission. I then said in that case I was asking his “permission” and he proceeded to reply that as I had already purchased the drink it was too late to ask him. There wasn’t the slightest attempt to show any interest in my child or his needs. He clearly has no interest in parents and families. As soon as I placed the juice on the table back inside the restaurant a waiter suddenly appeared asking us to remove the juice from the table as it may encourage other diners to bring their own soft drinks into the restaurant. It took an entirety to go from starters to mains but the sight of some juice on the table had the waiters scurrying around in no time at all. The standard of the food has slipped over the years but it is still good. However the awful customer experience negates the taste of the food and meant we came away from yesterday’s experience feeling thoroughly deflated. We have found on successive visits that the manager is oblivious as to how he comes across. I could have posted this type of review from several previous visits but when people show no interest in the needs of children then it is indicative of the character of that person. Sadly We shall not be frequenting this restaurant again until the Basil Fawlty ethos is replaced.

We were a group of three looking forward to eat at Fitou's. We arrived there and as we were seated - we were told by one of the waitresses in a very rude manner that the half drank water bottle held by one of us- is not allowed to be drank in the restaurant and you have to buy drinks from us etc. Fair enough - we respected the way they 'run the business' and just left the water bottle on the table intending not to drink it. Then 5 minutes later as we were looking through the menu - another guy comes and also in a very rude way, tells us this time to hide the water bottle under the table as this will cause customers to ask etc. First of all,the way we were greeted into the restaurant as potential 3 customers - was of terrible standard. Who would have thought a water bottle which was more or less empty could cause so much trouble at a restaurant? Second of all - why cause all the fuss when other customers are allowed to bring their own alcohol, but we can't bring our own water and are expected to hide it? What century do we live in - that you would rather lose 3 potential customers over a water bottle? The food might be great (even though I haven't tried it) but to me - customer service is what makes the place. If this is evident to be of low standard from the very beginning, then there is no point of me enjoying any dishes at this place. Overall, archaic customer service.

I have been going to Fitou for a very long time. In fact I had my 60th birthday celebrations there when it was known by the name No 1 Cafe. Always enjoyed the food and particularly the service given by the staff from those days. However, continued to frequent even after it was re named Fitou. I took some guests there on 23 January, Saturday at 7.30. Booked a table and was looking forward to it. I cannot tell you how disappointing the treatment dished out by the main man was. Yes the restaurant was full and they were busy. But it is no excuse to take out your frustration on your diners. The Manager, I am assuming he is the Manager, was downright rude and could not give a damn about us and providing even mediocre service was on his mind. As the saying goes, if you can't take the heat in the kitchen get out...I have been recommending this place to all my friends. Saturday was the last time I will ever do that nor will I ever return to this restaurant. We were treated extremely badly. One of my guests had been there with me in December, this time he brought his wife from Italy and asked if I could book a table so his wife who loves Thai could look forward to spending time in a special place sharing food, wine and company. Well I was most embarrassed and for me Fitou and I are over!!! Why should I pay to get such unacceptable rudeness. Would you put up with it.

Noodle dishs are mostly quite large! The service is often a bit of a let down. They can be quite nasty if you don't book in advance even when its obviously half empty. On my last visit there was a very nice real Thai fellow who made the meal far more enjoyable. Was recommended this restaurant by my cousin who is a regular..When we walked in rather then a warm and friendly meet and greet, were asked if we had made a booking in a not so friendly tone. For starters ordered what I thought would be crispy duck and pancakes, instead we got shredded meat on a plate that was pan fried!! Not nice at all.We also ordered fish cakes and satay, the satay was soo salty that we had to wash it down with drinks. For mains we ordered a curry and Pad Thai Noodles, the Curry again was not edible due to the high salt contents. When the waiter came to get our plates, he asked why we had left our food and explained was too salty, he tried the curry and thought it was fine, infact questioned in a sarcastic manner, also mentioned the duck and Satay, he apologized for not "liking" the duck, hmmmmmWhen the waiter brought the bill over he said he had taken off the Satay, wanted to question what about the curry but by this time just wanted out!!Shame as was planning my mums Birthday here.

We eat here regularly and always leave happy. The place itself is like a cafe style but the food is always delicious. The chicken wings are massive and so good. I usually have the spicy seafood (mussels, squid and prawns) with either plain rice or noodles. So flavourful. The beef panang is fab too. Never had a bad meal here. It is a BYO and the food is reasonably priced so it is a great meal out.

Amazingly good food. Great service. I'm slightly loathed to write this review as I don't want it getting too busy. BYO so also very good value. The Pad Kee Mao is amazing good.

This is a nice local place with a good ambiance. I've been coming to this place for a few years now and I've found by trial and error what they do well and what should be avoided. In general their rice and noodle dishes are good, their curries decent - although so hot that on occasion they have been inedible. The really disappointing dishes tend to be the salads though - the minced pork or chicken (larb) and the seafood salads are so choc full of herbs and spices as to be inedible, which I've never seen in any thai restaurant before (and I've seen a lot). Similarly the soups - you spend half your time picking out heaps of lemongrass and other herbs out of your bowl. Again, I'm sure they would say that's how you do thai food but I'm not sure why this is the only restaurant where I have this problem.Overall it's nice and recommended, but can be hit and miss on the dishes.

The one thing that always brings me back is the consistency of the dishes. Always made to a high standard and the fresh ingredients, some of which is specially brought over from the South East Asia region really make a difference. Likewise, the atmosphere is very good and for a restaurant situated on a residential road, it's just right for those looking for good Thai food in an unpretentious setting.

Popped in on a spur of the moment decision as in the area at lunchtime and fancied a bowl of noodle soup rather than a pub lunch, the standard as usual was high with quick service, tasty hot food and a reasonably cheap bill. Job done!!

I'll start by saying that we have been going to this Thai place (formerly named Number One) since we moved to the UK in 2005. The food used to be sensational, even when we moved outside London we would still come back every single time we were visiting London although it is way off our way. My brother who moved in London a couple of years ago was visiting every single week for the last 2 years! The food was that good! The last year the food quality has fallen but it was still good. But what we can't stand is the rudeness of the waiter (the bald guy). Not only they never remember that we are regular customers although we are there every week but he has been sarcastic when we order (once for us not knowing that Gai is chicken in Thai!). The last straw came when we visited last time after making a reservation. Because we arrived earlier that the time we booked we were refused entry! We had to wait for 20 minutes outside although the restaurant is in the middle of nowhere. And worse, a couple who were in front of us without a reservation, were sat in a table while we waited in the cold. When we complained we were not even offered an apology. So if they don't want regular customers in this place, we are not going back any more!

We had a late night meal here after wanting some good Thai food during a recent visit to London. Its a bit of a trek to get to as its off the main road. Decor is dated and doesnt give an impression of cleanliness. We werent given the warmest welcome by the waiter (Guy with shaved head) as he asked whether we had a reservation? When the restaurant was empty?? Seriously??? I think 4 other parties arrived as the night went on. This chap was loud and brash, more so to a particular party, but it made me us feel a little uncomfortable. Its difficult to have a good night if you cant hear each other over the voice of a waiter. The food was very good value and was nice. The mixed platter was delicious. We also ordered a Nasi goreng and another curry dish. All in all food is excellent and very good value for London. The ambience leaves a lot to be desired

It was a busy night but being a small restaurant you wouldn't think they could forget where they placed their diners. I has to ask for the waiter to take our order 30 minutes after we had been seated. People who came in after us got their food before us. When asking the waiter a question we were completely ignored. It's has gone down in my estimation as I have been here for many years. I will be thinking twice before coming again.

I was there two two nights in a row with family and friends. Food was below average and I know as I grew up in the region myself. Tom Yum soup was terrible - I would use that as a yardstick for any Thai restaurant. On both bills extra items were added unwittingly and was only spotted by my dear wife. The first occasion - takeaway containers 'punched 4 times' coming up to £43 and the second time 2 full main courses were added, supposedly we ordered extra prawns in them (?)What infuriated me was their arrogant explanation and refusal to accept it as their fault. Each staff member blamed the colleague, and the person punching the till didn't acknowledge it was his fault. The owner came to our table and denied any wrongdoing from their side! I was shouted at by a waiter - honestly why? When I told them this happened 2 nights in a row, they still denied any fault. This must be their modus operandi as the owner showed no surprise or remorse. Arrogant to the end of the conversation. Imagine if you owned a restaurant and was told your staff overcharged your customers? If it was me I'd be very apologetic. Not these guys. I'd stay away from this place for the rest of my life.

Delicious Thai food at a bargain price, where you can bring your own booze, ask yourself: what more can you want? Fitou's is in an out-of-the-way place. From outside, it always looks closed and deserted. No wonder it is sadly under-used at times. Ignore the dismal exterior and immediate surroundings to find a very pleasant place for a tasty lunch hour. The mixed starter is enough for three and sensationally good, as is the Pad Thai noodles. The Larb Ghai (a minced chicken salad) is fragrant, but boy, is it hot! Remove the tiny red chillies, if, like us, you can't cope, or ask the cook to "tone it down". We were less impressed with the Thai Green chicken curry, as the aubergines were undercooked. The service can be slow, especially on Saturdays, when our one waiter was alone and badly needed help. All in all, this is a good place and they deserve queues around the block, but not too often, please!

I have been coming to the restaurant for years when it was No1 Cafe and now Fitous. .The location is perfect, the staff are very attentive and the menu is excellent. The food always tastes fresh and I always come away a little bit too full because the food is that good. The prices are very reasonable indeed. The ambience is perfect for a catch up with friends or a romantic meal.

Last year I read the novel "Pear Shaped" by Stella Newman - which mentions this restaurant, and gives it a glowing review. I made a note of it and decided to put it to the test when in the area.So this Tuesday night I visited with two business colleagues, and hoped for the best. The food was fantastic and we were all impressed, the restaurant does not have a licence so you can go next door to the off licence and get your wine ( great as it keeps the cost well down !).The service was friendly and efficient, despite the restaurant being full. But the most amazing thing was the bill - the three of us had an excellent two course meal ( the wine from next door was £7.99) and the bill came to £36 !!!!!!.Definitely going again !Great experience - highly recommended.

This is once of my favorite restaurants, purely for the food. The staff are lovely apart from the man who can sometimes be rather rude. I know alot of people who use this restaurant they have all felt the same about this man. The food always tastes very fresh and the service is fast. Its very good value for money and they do allow you to bring your own bottle. It can get very busy, so always best to book.

Good restaurant and good food. We went there for a social dinner and had a nice time. Price was also not excessive. Service was quick and efficient! One peculiarity is that they don't sell alcohol (no license) but you are invited to bring your own! Tip: there is a 24/7 drug store next to the restaurant!

Two friends and I went to Fitou's for lunch and the experience was horrendous. I've been before and found the service good and the food great, but today was negative from start to finish and if it hadn't been after 1pm with very few other places to go, we would have left straight away.As soon as we walked in the welcome was very cold and off-ish (I'm not expecting bowing and scraping here) and we were directed to a table which we were then moved from by another member of staff and told it was weird we'd sat there because it was next to the only other people in the restaurant. That's as may be but it was the only table that could seat us in the area we'd been directed to! And there are way, way better ways to handle the situation.Service was then slow, but fine- we weren't in a rush. One of our party was brought their food, which was then taken away a couple of minutes later as it wasn't for us. They didn't check he hadn't started and it was really rude! The crispy duck, when it came out, was not crispy- it was cold and greasy and served with cucumber that had obviously been cut a while ago. The Nasi Goreng my friend had was ok, but my Pad Thai was clearly re-heated, a bit bland, and not that warm. The pancakes for the duck were under-cooked. It was all pretty grim and the waiter made it quite clear he expected us to leave our change as a tip, which we did not do. There were other things that made this a less than pleasant experience but it starts to sound petty...As I said, the previous time we went it was good food if not the best atmosphere. But this made me feel very uncomfortable, and the food took a long time to then not be fresh. I was embarrassed to have taken my friends, to be quite honest.

We went here on the recommendation of people who lived in the neighbourhood and were pleasantly surprised. Prices were reasonable, and the food was fresh and tasty. Lots of people eating there, including many Thai families as well as others. Staff friendly, clean comfortable setting, all in all we thought it was a great deal. Clean, comfortable setting. I also appreciated the range of choices - I'm a vegetarian but my husband eats meat.
