Absolutely spectacular and a gem in a most unexpected part of Oxford! Osney mead is a light industrial estate not far from the city centre. There you can get your big rocks made into smaller rocks, get your tyres changed or herd the University's books whilst forced to hot desk.. or visit Aldens Fishmarket and in the latter case oh my you should. It's an odd little cafe above a fishmonger, but whoever cooks the food is a genius and the the menu whilst limited is sublime. It's not cheap enough for lunch every day, but oh my it's good. I might only go once a month or so but leave feeling replete and happy with a truly skilfully made meal. Bring your colleagues for a walk and a random treat. Cheaper than a chain grease-burger, 10x better.

Excellent food. Great price. Hidden away in a non-descript industrial estate. In what looks like the old admin offices of the fish wholesaler. But do not be fooled by appearances. While there may only be 3 choices of main dish, it is always exquisitely presented and very tasty. Best kept secret in Oxford

First time I had been since lockdown and was so disappointed. Fish and chips dry and overcooked with tiny piece of fish. Used to be fantastic. And now only does fish and chips and tuna burger. The amazing daily fish plates are gone and presumably the two ? Portuguese or Spanish chefs. Very sad.

The tuna burgers far exceeded our expectations. Really great value and so tasty. We will definitely be back. The cafe itself is canteen style and very basic. Go for the food...not the ambience. Also I’ve deducted one point for unnecessary use of plastic (individual sauce sachets, styrofoam containers, plastic cups). Apparently most fish are found with plastic particles in their bellies due to high levels of plastic pollution in the ocean. Please do your bit Alden’s and switch to more sustainable options ASAP!

Okay so first let’s get the ordering system sorted - the menu is by the stairs to the canteen (in your right as you enter). You can check out the menu there or on their insta page. Then you have to go to the fish shop to order at the cashier (where you can also pick up beverages alcoholic or non-alc). You go up stairs and give your receipt to the chefs behind the counter. Sit down and wait! Now onto the food. My friend and I both opted for the roasted Pollock which was excellent. The fish itself was meaty and really fresh (could’ve mistaken for a cod!) and execution perfect (crispy on the outside, juicy and flakey on the inside ) and the red pepper purée was well seasoned to compensate for the mild taste of the fish! This could’ve easily costed over £15 at a restaurant. We will be back!

I'd been meaning to visit for a little while - menu sounded good and very reasonable for fish in these parts! The ambiance is total works canteen - formica, clear your own table, fetch your own cutlery/drinks but quite frankly, I would sit on an upturned crate for this food. Best fish dish I have eaten in ages - sea bream on a silky cauliflower puree with pistachio pesto giving a serious hit of herby green-ness. The focaccia was salty, oily, carb heaven and my husband loved his noodle mussel coconut soup dish. Love the fact the menu choice is pared down to 3 dishes - I feel like the chef has chosen what tastes good and is in season and wants to share that with you. The kitchen is open so you can see and smell the dishes being prepared. We will be back. Great food, zero pretensions.

The way you order your food here is odd: you choose your meal from the menu at the foot of the stairs, go through the shop and order your meal at the till, take the receipt upstairs and give it to the chef, and sit at a table. After a while he brings a sideplate with a piece of stale bread; and later he brings your meal. What I ordered turned out to be soup - very good soup, but not worth the £9.40 I'd paid for it. And there's no drinks other than water, and no deserts etc. You can get better value by walking 500 yards to The Punter, with better value, a wider choice of dishes, starters, desserts, coffee and beer available. Or just 150 yards to SpringGreens, which offers much better value.

Fish4lunch have rave reviews here on Trip Advisor so was keen to have a value for money cooked lunch. There were three dishes to choose from (I think the menu changes daily) however, as I'm gluten intolerant I just had a choice of two. Mackeral with mustard mash sounded great and it was, but the mackeral fillets were so small I was still hungry after the meal. No gluten free bread was available so my husband could mop up the sauce but I couldn't and as a result he was full after the meal! So although it was £7.95 I was left feeling I didn't get value for money. My husband enjoyed it so much he wants to go back for their fish & chips which are served on Fridays. I would return with the hope of a decent size portion of fish next time!

Get here early. Buy wine and wait whilst they cook the best fish you'll taste. We've become accustomed to being constantly delighted by the fantastic dishes that are produced. Unfortunately, this place is tiny, so maybe it's not the best venue for families with small children. It's on the first floor and the stairs are easily accessible to.little ones who like to wander. Plus, although the food is cooked quickly, boredom is a very real possibility for children waiting for their lunch. And you sit in quite close proximity to your fellow lunchers.

What an amazing find! First class restaurant food for very little money in a formica table cafe setting in an industrial estate! Friends told me about this place, which I have now visited four times. I can't wait to go again. I think this is the best fish in Oxford, in terms of freshness and preparation. There is such a cheery atmosphere. I notice the other diners smiling! The chefs - hugely hardworking - can be seen behind the counter creating the dishes. Full marks to them, and to Haymans for such a creative and bold idea. They seem to have a loyal and enthusiastic clientele. Thank you, thank you.

The cafe is upstairs in the fish market building with the menu at the bottom of the stairs. You pay inside at the till and then proceed upstairs. The room is light and airy. Cutlery and free water you get yourself. A couple near us brought their own wine and the glasses were provided. We had heard it was basic and the price good; we were not disappointed. My wife had the halibut with clams and me the tuna with kimchi; such hot tasty food! There were only 4 choices but that is the nature of the place. There was a good stream of people coming in for lunch. We were in no way hurried but we were only there for 50 minutes. I think we will return on Friday for the traditional fish and chips (of course there is the superb fish supermarket and fresh fish on the ground floor). Everything is paid for in the supermarket below where we could have purchased cooled wine or cold beer or soft drinks.

I buy fish at Hayman's Fisheries regularly, but hadn't tried their lunch restaurant until today. We had traditional battered haddock and chips, which was at least as good as the likes of Rick Stein, and more than half the price. And they do a lot more than fish and chips! The rationale is to showcase the wide range of fish dishes and dispel myths about it being pricey or samey - and we loved the results. It's out of the way, and an odd place for a restaurant, but it's great. And you can bring your own wine or buy a bottle downstairs in the shop.

I discovered this place a while back when I saw an exciting sounding menu pinned to a post along the tow path near Osney Mead industrial estate. I couldn't believe there was such a restaurant on the estate. Fish 4 Lunch has been a favourite ever since. A choice of three or four fish dishes each day cooked to perfection by chef Kuba, about half the price you would expect to pay in a restaurant yet using quality ingredients not least the fresh fish from Haymans. This week we enjoyed hake in a white wine sauce with new potatoes, green beans and almonds and sea bream with ratatouille, rocket and basil oil. The food also comes with free home made focaccia which is a delicious addition. And Friday's is fish and chips day - not to be missed. Surroundings are basic, all the better not to detract from the food. Soft drinks and wine can be purchased in the Haymans shop below to have with the meal and chilled water is available in the restaurant. Sign up to the restaurants email list to receive the menu.

In a light industrial estate off the Botley road, secreted above Haymans Fisheries there's a not terribly well advertised fish restaurant. Though the place looks like a staff canteen, don't be fooled, it's open to the public and what is served is absolutely first class. With a choice of three or four different dishes at around the £8 mark, there are generous servings of fresh fish superbly cooked. I had the monkfish curry (which also contained remarkably tender prawns) whilst my partner had the salmon fishcake special. The variously named piscine gastropubs in the area don't serve fish that's half as good or anywhere approaching the price. Currently open 11:30AM - 3pm, you can even have a glass of wine.

Husband had fried whiting with seafood chowder. The fish was cooked to perfection. Best bit of cod I have had for a long time and we have just come back from Mauritius! Good value too. Highly recommended really would like to keep this a secret but I wish them to do well.
