Fintan's Fish & Chip Co. in Cardiff

Have used fintan thru the recent Covid difficulties and wish to compliment them on their consistent fish quality. The only down side is the need to queue up, due to the large number of returning customers. But without doubt the food is worth the wait especially as fish and chips is no longer a cheap meal

Ordered 3 meals Chips uncooked on all 3 Chicken on one of the dishes must have been deep fried for a very long time, couldn’t eat it. Disgusting. Never going back

Decided to have a chippy tea. Worst meal I’ve ever had. Most of the chips were raw mixed in with some cooked. We will not be back.

Ordered FinTans fish and chips from the Llanishen branch this evening through Uber. Delivery was prompt. Unfortunately food was gross - stale old tough fish, soggy batter together with cardboard tasteless chips , cold and wet deep fried cauliflower. Altogether a very unpleasant experience , food inedible and ended up in the bin . Shame because fish from here is usually of good quality but definitely not this evening.

Gross chips, the WORST I’ve ever had! Disgusting curry sauce!I wrote to the store about this over a month ago and I’ve had no response! Clearly the manager doesn’t care! I would avoid this place like COVID! Go around the corner to Victoria’s Fish Bar on the corner of Old Church Road/ Victoria road. Great food there.

(Disappointing to say the least) we called in here today 3.30 for fish x chips which came in a box no mushy peas no lemon and the chips where disgusting how long they kept them I do not know but I can say they were not very warm and tasted like cardboard ,the fish was nice !but to me the meal was ruined the two should have been freshly cooked as the complement one and other ,my husband did take them back after we’d eaten the fish otherwise this would have been cold to !and was offered a pie has compensation!he took the pie which I wouldn’t have ,I’m writing this review for other people to be (aware )it might save somebody from wasting their money after all £7 for one portion is not cheap.

Was surprised at the poor reviews for Fintans in Llanishen. Been there several.times recently and have been very impressed. They deal well.with social distancing, even though it is sometimes necessary to wait outside. Fish and chips well cooked and tasty as are the mushrooms in batter. Very friendly staff, one of whom is a petite lady with glasses, who greets everyone cordially!

The chips are sub-standard but my biggest gripe was with the pony-tailed woman behind the counter who felt the need to start mouthing off about a nearby chippy , that was bordering on racism, telling everyone within earshot how the proprietors were not very nice (a chippy who actually offered free services to vulnerable people during lockdown- don't renmember Fintans being generous with their portions, never mind helping the community!) A mean, unspirited venue which i have avoided since.

Came here last night and had an amazing meal! The best I've had in a while. Definitely back to the old Top Gun standards! Well Done guys

The burgers are always dripping with gross fat🤮 this place has a 2 health rating. Nothing more to say really is there.

I’ve been here several times last time was two weeks ago. You order your food and sit and wait. For some reason the edit is endless. You can see food on display but each time u e ordered you have to wait even though the food is in the display cabinet. Don’t understand. Always asked do you want salt and vinegar always say no vinegar but they always put it on!!!!!!!!!!Is it really so difficult to serve fish and chips?!?!

Our fish supper was ruined by hard, difficult- to- eat and actually unpleasant chips. Most went in the bin.

Went in to get Chips, Cheese and Beans, didn't see it being prepared but opened it when I got home to this.....Not even a full portion of chips, a spoonful not beans and a few bits of cheese all for £4.00 what a complete rip off. Might I suggest you stop spending money on fancy refurbishments and start giving value for money to your customers. Won't return.

wife and i just picked up cod and chips from here 2 for 12 pound,stunning both the fish and the chips,very pleasant staff too,we will be back even though we have to drive from caerphilly,well done guys

Called in for take out 7pm last Thursday - was so busy - 3 serving, older lady always delightful but the younger 2 need to learn from her - one dropped a fish from box onto counter but still served it for my friend the other with glasses who obviously was stressed was so incredibly rude shouting out numbers & more or less throwing orders to customers. What happened to service with a smile? Then the food threw out my fish & chips - undercooked chips & chewy fish & so greasy. Llanishen fintans will not be getting my custom again I’ll return to the delightful Youngers on Birchgrove.

... always crispy chips and a fresh fish cooked to order. Went the other day and had to crisp up the limp soggy chips at home in a fry pan (pic). If they are not up to scratch its best to bin them guys as we are far less likely to be back and it seems you are losing many customers due to such issues and ever increasing prices and ever decreasing portions. Every time I go there there is some tinkering with the portion size or packaging to squeeze 0.5% more in profit. There is a phrase 'cheap as chips' so don't be so miserly and keep up the old Top Gun standards!

This is what I got for £3.70. Not even a full portion of chips, overcooked. No please or thank you from the person who served me. This is the last time I come here, OverRated, Overpriced.

Lovely fish and chips to take home . We always have a nice meal here . There has never been any complaints and all of the menue is fabulous. The batter is nice and crisp and there is something for everyone . Thank you .

4 large chips cost £12:40, but the portions didn’t fill the polystyrene trays they were served in. Chips were cold by the time they arrived home 5 minutes later, and were full of bruising/black bits. Fintan’s is on the more expensive side, but quality and portion sizes justified return visits in the past. Not this time, I won’t be going back. And what chip shop doesn’t offer salt or vinegar before wrapping the chips up? Very disappointing.

Previously had lovely food here so having attended a music venue in Whitchurch Village on Friday we purposely left early (11.15) so we could get a fish supper. Fintan's was closed! So missed the end of the show and had no supper. Website shows opening times until 11am Mon - Weds and midnight Fri & Sat.. either wrong information or they just decided to close early.. lot of people at the music event so they would have certainly missed a lot of business

This is still a good chippy! I've been frequenting it for several years and the food quality is still there however the establishment is currently starting to look a little worn down inside with ripped chairs and flaking paint which doesn't look great if I'm honest. They need to sort it out as there are a few other chip shops in Whitchurch that are also good, more modernised and better looked after.

Great service, friendly staff. Had a great time😁😁 Definitely recommend, food very nice. Felt like we were by the sea👍

I work locally and spent a great deal of time organising orders for over a dozen colleagues. I rang the order through and was told they'd have to cook almost everything when I arrived. I'd collected money from my colleagues based on the prices on the website only to be told when I got there's that the order was almost £5 more than expected - bloody expensive sausage and chips for me! The guy did help me carry the stuff to the car, which he didn't have to but given we were ordering over £70 worth of food it was the least if can do. The food itself was ok, nothing to rave about but not awful either. Though Fintans is closer, we'll be going back to another chippy we have used previously as it provided better value for money.

Visited this chip shop a few times when staying in Whitchurch. One of my favourite chippies. Chips are always spot on and the cod is amongst the best i have had at any restaurant. Crispy batter and a thick chunk of meat. Have tried a meat pie and sausages and all are of a chip shop quality. Little unsure of the curry sauces with the fruity being ok but the hot was quite disgusting. Staff are very chatty and pleasant whilst you are waiting for the freshly cooked to order fish. Enjoy.

I called in for a small cod and chips.the chips were fresh but the batter on the fish was quite honestly the worst I have ever had. This is becoming a trend in a lot of places.it seems that no-one is capable of mixing a light and crispy batter. Totally ruined my fish supper. Most of the people in these chip shops are part time and you rarely see the same one twice. They need to be taught the right way. A bad batter ruins the fish.

I have visited this fish and chip shop a few times and it always delivers excellent quality fish and chips.

Having run the Whitchurch 5k, and then had a couple of pints, would have been nice to have some chips .. but oh no refused entry at 9.05. Come on guys .. a major event and you are too lazy to want to make a few extra £ .. pathetic!

Wow, I rarely eat fish and chips these days. Cooked to order, this offers the best around.I can’t remember ever having such a great quality product. Obviously the fish and batter were fresh, cooked in quality oil. A great, light crispy dish.

Went out for Fish and Chips on good Friday. Was waiting for new chip shop to open but as it was raining went to Fintans as it was open. Quality of food was ok but 26 quid for 2 large cod and chips and 2 small cod and chips and a curry sauce pretty expensive if you asked me. Certainly wont be popping out for treat there any time soon. At least not without saving up.

Excited when this new chippy opened in Llanishen village. Popped in and ordered our meal about 8 people came in after us and they all left before us.

Hey reviewers! The mrs and I popped out for a Friday chippy and have never been so disgusted. i was so looking forward to the night out but the chips were cold and I unfortunately found a hair in me chips. the fish was dripping in oil and the batter was falling apart. I'm sorry to leave this review but the people need an honest view of the disappointing chip shop. definitely my worst chippy experience in the last 10 years. highly not recommended and workers could smile now and again. the chippy experience should start as soon as you walk in when the workers should brighten your experience with a stunning smile but they dulled my night. So disappointed :(

Lovely gluten free fish & chips. This was the second visit & the fish was so much better than the first time. Disappointing that gluten free is only available on a Sunday in this shop

Only popped in as passing was feeling peckish I was served by a lovely old lady who spoke welsh felt like being back home in west Wales. Great chips and excellent customer service dioclh

Used to be called Top Gun- been going there for years- have their own trawlers connections- humble British filling food at great value.

Have on occasion Used Youngers in Birchgrove but their customer service is un-ratable with tiny portions and high prices! compared with Fintans whom are 10/10, portions are amazing. Just reminded me why I stopped going to youngers after our visit at lunchtime. Fintans is on a whole different level. Thankyou

Travelled from Ynysybwl to Whitchurch as my husband is GF and it was well worth the journey. I didn't have GF and I have to say that it was the nicest fish and chips I've had in a long long time. The fish was fantastic. Pure fish, with good flavour. Chips were good too. Only small criticism is we asked about GF curry sauce and were told it wasn't GF, yet on the website it's advertised as GF. Definitely recommend a visit

Had fish and chips this evening and it was stunning the fish was cooked to perfection with a very tasty batter would recommend to anyone. Staff very nice and friendly

Havent been for about a year as the last time under the Top Gun was very poor but there has been a vast improvment

Measley portions and terrible chewy chips, always been poor but since the last time I had their consistently bad meal I have finally decided to stop giving them the benefit of the doubt. Even if they were the only chip shop open in Cardiff I would avoid this place like the plague.

Very poor food, overcooked pies, heavy batter and extremely bitty chips (half had to be thrown away).

This is a new fish and chip bar opened recently in Whitchurch. It's part of a growing chain it seems. The staff were pleasant and helpful and seen to be directing people to more cost effective options for their takeaways. They take orders for fish whilst in the queue which is then cooked fresh for you. It states that the fish is locally sourced from sustainable fish stocks and even names the ship that caught it. The fish was the freshest I've tasted, but the chips although tasty were a little disappointing with most being just the small 'scrumps' and not a very large portion for one stated as so. There was a big queue though, so obviously a popular place. There is very limited parking outside, but a large public car park to the rear of the street. Would definitely recommend this place and will be going back for the odd treat.
