So much has been sacrificed in the modern rush for profit that it was nice to find this good old traditional coffee shop. By traditional I mean a friendly welcome, very good coffee and tea and some lovely cakes. I sampled a Persian flapjack which was very tasty while other customers were tucking in to meals they seemed to be enjoying. The atmosphere of the place is another plus, so relaxing that you actually feel refreshed when you leave, while prices were very competitive. I just wish we had a coffee lounge like Filter Through where I come from. Well worth a visit.

The owner was very smiley but the person who delivered our order looked like she wasn’t sure what smiling was and certainly wasn’t going to waste one on a customer. Customer service? What? The oat milk latte was too sweet and really not nice, the gluten free pre wrapped cake might have been there a few too many months. I won’t bother returning which is a shame as not many options in Holsworthy.

Well, what a shame! We've been going to Filter Through, every few months, for years, following up a trip to a Holsworthy yarn shop. We normally sit in there for morning coffee and cake, lunch, then an afternoon hot drink, before leaving for Bideford. Today was different. We were made to feel very unwelcome and won't be going back

I went into "Filter Through" café. There were no tables free in the front area. I was taken through the back room and it was dark with not enough light. I mentioned I only wanted to order a coffee. I did not get served and the staff would not allow me to move and said it was too much extra work for them to wipe my table (I had not had any food or drink). they also mentioned they would have to wipe a table that I wanted to sit at. They were not helpful or friendly. They didn't apologise that they had not served me. I was shocked at their attitude towards a customer. They did not notice that I had not been served. They appeared to be more interested in chatting than dealing with customers. I left feeling very shocked and rejected. I was frustrated that I had wasted 15 minutes going in there to relax and enjoy a coffee and the atmosphere. The service I had was similar to bullying because both assistants refused to be persuaded for me to move to the front area. They explained that it was a huge effort for them to wipe my table if I moved. I would not recommend this café.

We popped in to Filter Through twice during a West Country week, once for a simple coffee and snack and once for lunch. Post-lockdown restrictions are in place to the extent that the toilets aren't open to customers - instead you're directed to the public loos in the bus shelter block a few steps away, which are adequate but on the spartan side. Good coffee and light lunch options, friendly staff and talking point local art for sale.

We saw this pretty little cafe and thought it looked the perfect place for tea and coffee and a bite to eat. We were asked courteously what we would like, and requested a pot of tea for me, and decaffeinated coffee for my husband. He asked for cold milk with it, and had to repeat it twice; he got the feeling he wasn't being listened to. Would we like anything else? Yes please, we said, a slice of the quiche, which looked delicious. This produced an indignant response. No, they couldn't possibly serve that - they were closing in ten minutes! Well, at just after 3:30 pm we hadn't quite expected that, and we really couldn't quite fathom the logic; if eating a piece of cold quiche in ten minutes was a problem, how was drinking tea and coffee somehow not? But we retired obediently to a table without argument, and after a minute or two a cup of coffee was served to my husband, soon followed by the tea for me. My husband asked politely if his coffee was decaffeinated, having learned the hard way to be careful; he gets breathing problems with caffeine. No, she said, he'd never said he wanted decaff! Well, we said politely that we were sorry, but he definitely had, as he always does; it does matter in his case, and I had heard him say it.She clearly thought he was being unreasonably difficult, but picked up the cup and said she could get him a decaff replacement. But by this time my husband was tired of being made to feel the one at fault, and he declined and walked out. I was left to apologise and ask how much I owed them for the tea and coffee, but was rudely told, "Oh, don't bother, just forget it!" so in the end, I didn't argue. The two members of staff were standing behind the counter together, muttering about us as I left, and the silence among the customers was deafening. It was a horrible experience, and I apologise to any regulars who found it embarrassing. But I honestly don't think we were being unreasonable customers, and I dislike having been made to feel it was all our fault. Still, look on the bright side - at least you know we won't be back!

Being local I've visited the Filter Through a few times. It's ok for coffee & cake but the rest of the menu is extremely limited for hot or cold food. Staff are polite but the wait for food to be prepared is excruciating whether it is quiet or busy! A toasted sandwich on a very quiet afternoon arrived 30 minutes from the time of ordering with one cherry tomato as garnish!! Holsworthy town desperately needs a decent traditional tearoom as the only 2 cafes close very early afternoon. Waitrose cafe is your only other choice when the town cafes close!!

We went to this cafe as it was recommended by a local. The food was very nice and well presented. However the small cafe was filled with very large tables which left us with unfortunately feeling cramped. Our table seated about eight people with heavy furniture which was just too big for the two of us. Perhaps a more continental take would be better with two seater tables and chairs which could be easily moved to accommodate varying group sizes. Shame really good food not so good ambience.

I wasn't impressed by Holsworthy, I find the town very drab. Filter through coffee shop is a little gold mine! They have plenty of cake but a very small food menu. I've been there only a few times of the last four years I've lived here, but each time you get good service, tasty food and drink, and a very calm, but sweet boutique decor that makes you feel great. Really lovely place with excellent customer service. Yummy food - all 7 of us VERY happy with our different meals. Reasonably priced too. Happy to help and accommodate. We’ll be back next time we visit Bideford! Thank you.

I popped in to the Secret Garden Cafe hoping to have a light lunch with my daughter for a special treat - we had been given a £15 voucher to spend and had been really looking forward to our visit. However, it was not the lovely lunch we were hoping for… When we went in, there was a bit of a wait for a table. One of the waiting staff popped out into the garden to see if a table was free there. The older man in the kitchen spoke very rudely to him saying a rather aggressive manner, “you should know if there’s a table free if you could only do your job properly!” The poor guy (who was probably only late teens) looked really upset. While we were waiting for a table, I chatted to another staff member and showed her my gift voucher saying we were excited to finally be able to use it as we had been given it for Christmas. The man in the kitchen then demanded to have a look at it. He said that we couldn’t possibly use the voucher as he only provides laminated vouchers and ours was just on a piece of paper. He implied that we had printed it off ourselves! He then questioned me (in a very abrupt and abrasive manner) for about 5 minutes via the female staff member, wanting to know where I had got the voucher and kept repeating that he only ever gives out laminated ones. I wasn’t really sure what to say! He then asked the female staff member to write down a note about the voucher in their book and take my name and phone number! He said I couldn’t use the voucher until “it had been investigated.” I felt like a criminal! It was also very embarrassing and uncomfortable as everyone in the cafe was staring at my daughter and I! I was then given a menu and told that someone would be over to take our order. I said no thank you, and we walked hastily out. I won’t be back. My auntie (who gifted me the voucher) has been conned out of her £15 so if you are considering buying vouchers from here as a gift, I would say don’t bother, as you won’t be able to use them!

What a lovely coffee shop. Friendly staff, excellent taste in music (Taylor Swift). Clean and bright cafe. Hope small businesses like this come through the energy crisis, would be a shame to lose this type of establishment.

Lovely beachside cafe, great place for a good breakfast. Other than breakfast it's the usual 'something and chips' unimaginative menu. Clean and tidy, toilets across the road, disabled friendly and dogs welcome. What seriously needs attention is the staff, very slow at clearing and more interested in each other than the customers. I asked for black coffee with separate cold milk, which needed much explaining, then got black coffee with separate HOT milk. I had paid up and left and my table had still not been cleared. It's an OK spot but with a bit of effort could be the talk of the town
