Owen front of house was very friendly and really helpful....portions are massive and food is well cooked and well presented...seems really busy early evening but restaurant is small and booking recommended..prices are not expensive for the portion size..food is delicious and would recommend will eat here again when visiting Durham

The worst Chinese takeaway in my life. The fried rice is basically mushy rice with stone hard pieces of chicken and 4 prawns. The chicken wings were edible. It wouldn’t be the worse if not for the prices. Mad expensive for subpar quality. Never ever again and trust the rating you guys. There’s a reason it has few stars. Never ever again

Good food and generous portions

Ordered sweet and sour sauce poured it all over the food to only realise the sauce was sweet chilli so meal ruined and couldn’t eat it, tried to complain last night however it just kept saying order is on way and no options to challenge

Food arrived kind of warm and 2/3 dishes were just bad. I mean how do you make egg fried rice taste of playdough?

There was a lot of confusion. I went inside and noone was there, the guy working in the desk even didn't know if the restaurant is open or closed. The menu is vast but maybe my choice of food was bad. I didn't like it much. The fried rice was ok. And found it's little pricey too. In my personal opinion I didn't find the food that good.

Traditional Chinese not your usual bog standard food. Only customers in were from the Chinese community which is always a good sign. Good service quickly served a real find .

So disappointed. We’ve been using this restaurant for years. Tonight, the order was late. I called to ask for an update, told the order was on the way, lady rudely hung up and cancelled our order for no reason.

If you want and authentic Chinese restaurant, this is it. The menu was educational but the food was great. Massive portions designed for sharing

Ordered delivery via just eat. Incredibly disappointed; poor value for money, meat was tough and dry, as were the starters. The duck was mainly gristle and my husband couldn’t chew it. Will not be using again. 2/10, would not recommend.

Delicious Chinese Northeast food

There is too much loose meat powder in the beef, and the lamb chops may be the only fresh food, but I have seen that all the food delivered is packed in plastic bags and there is nothing fresh, oh! Maybe the vegetables were fresh, but the rest revealed a rotten smell. The sanitary condition is even worse, it is really a disgusting place.

Ordered a Takeaway through Uber eats Never again half and hour later than scheduled time and cold!!! Pancakes were missing for the duck Chips were clearly reheated covered in the most awful spice Contacted them and said they’d refund the duck price.

Not quite authentic Chinese food I would say. Much adapted to the local taste I suppose.

Food was very late - the status kept showing expected delivery time at 20:20, but didn’t arrive until after 21:00. For the past several months my favourite dish ‘Buddha’s Feast’ has been showing up as ‘unavailable’ when I order. The garlic & chilli vegetables were inedible - very gloopy with an unpleasant taste - quite heavy on the fish sauce which was odd for a vegetarian dish. The lemon chicken is usually nice, but today it didn’t taste right. Very disappointed.

The restaurant have good music and a nice atmosphere, the staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is defiantly worth taking the trip all the way down from Manchester as recommended by dear friends of mine.

On a visit to Durham with friends, we stopped at this restaurant on the first day after a long journey, everything tasted amazing, so good that we went back on our fourth and final day to try more of the menu. Big surprise everything was incredible again. I don't usually leave reviews but this was a very pleasant experience that I'll remember.

The small portion of salt and chilli chips did not have fresh onions, peppers or chillies like every other Chinese restaurant I have been to in the UK... just a red dusting of powder on them. The salt and chilli chicken pieces were like mush inside, clearly fresh pieces of chicken breast had not been used. It was inedible. The meat in the chicken chow mein was slimey. I really would not recommend, especially considering the prices of the dishes. Go elsewhere!

Authentic Chinese food cooked the way they eat it. Really good atmosphere and a clean restaurant

Huge portions, quick and friendly service, with great food, all at reasonable prices. This was our first time at Fifty Six, but it won't be our last.

Mapo tofu is full of Sichuan peppercorns, and the oil is so thick that I can’t even eat it. It makes my mouth numb. I’ve ordered pork twice and it’s hard to explain. The beef is so hard that it’s hard to bite through.

Luke warm, ordered skinny fries got normal chips which were soggy, the salt and chilli chicken was bizarre, just like over spicy rubbery chicken, no onions or veg cooked with it, never had anything like that, overall, not pleasant!

Food tasted ok but very small portions compared to other suburban takeaways

Driver went to wrong delivery address. Called me to say he had arrived. He hadn't. Told him I was at Premier Inn and gave him full address again (even though it was correct on the order). Rang me again and he had gone to wrong Premier Inn!!! Food was stone cold and inedible when it arrived. I was unable to order something else as I had paid on work card and maxxed out allowance. Awful

Best Sichuan food in Durham. One of the best in North East.

This order has not been delivered and the restaurant defer all fault to Just Eat. No apology or offer to rectify the issue.

Prompt delivery food piping hot.

The food was never delivered. I called the restaurant they said the driver had already taken the food around 40 mins ago. On the app it showed delivered 1.5 hr ago. As the food is not here I can't comment on the food quality.

The king pao fish was good but slightly salty … perhaps too much soy sauce

Meal was colder than I would expect. Needed reheating. King prawns were a very odd texture.

Disappointing, soft prawn crackers, burnt seaweed and overcooked king prawns in a thick jelly like sauce.

We had the braised pork noodle soup, spicy braised beef noodle soup, and the lamb chops. The lamb chops were really good and it came in a really grand presentation. The pork noodle soup was really nice, but the meat can be a little bit more tender. For the braised beef soup, it was nice but the broth was just more spicy and you can’t really taste the richness of it compared to the pork one. But overall, good food and fair prices. We got 10% discount for cash payment and it totaled up to £37.35 for all three dishes (incl the jasmine tea too!)

There was a lot of uncertainty, since the restaurant didn’t confirm the order for a long time.

Just eat driver didn’t even arrive Phoned the restaurant for help and the women on the phone told me “it’s not there problem and that I have to contact just eat” They didn’t even offer an replacement meal or anything absolutely a joke!

Excellent authentic food nothing anglicised. Like most Chinese restaurants you get 10% off if paid by cash.

We ordered a duck dish and got pork with little to no meat, just fat and crackling. In an unknown sauce. Chicken was OK, but parts were dry and chipy. Not ordering from here again. 😒

To begin, our dumplings were chilly, they caused taste pollution in me and my companion’s mouth. Second of all, the vegan duck came without pancakes, which I specifically requested in a ‘Note to the restaurant’. Last time I ordered, my vegan duck was complimented with pancakes without request or a price and I was ecstatic. It was also dry, clearly had not been marinated in the sauce for a long enough period of time. The taste was abnormal; I have feasted many a takeaway from this establishment previously, and yet this time the vegan duck was simply inedible. This was disappointing, quite frankly. The dumplings were partnered with a tub, containing at maximum a pinch of soy sauce; this greatly saddened my friend and I. The soup was tasty enough, but the consistency was mediocre. The height of this takeaway was the chips, which were the cheapest component. This brushed our smiles into frowns rather rapidly, as we had been looking forward to this meal for the entire evening. You just lost the trust of a loyal customer. Goodbye Fifty Six Restaurant . Forever.

2.5 hours?! Too long to wait. Food was nice but not worth the wait time and price for that. No updates and communication is none existent from restaurant and JustEat.

Rubbish food. Just use flavors from Chinese grocery stores. Very high price, very low food. My recommendation is: never go to this restaurant. 食物是用华人店的调料做的，一点诚意都没有。价格死贵，食物质量很差，味道差，不新鲜，红烧肉用糖和色素做的，面里头放了奇怪的调料，吃完以后口干，狂喝水。总之，千万别来！！！

Specifically asked for no mushrooms in anything but you still put mushrooms in curry.

Food was great. Will order again. Delivery time was long but that was because there were no drivers. I can recommend this restaurant.

Food was cold on arrival. I presume as it was 15 minutes late.

Half the order was missing, called to query it, was told everything was there - assured them it wasn't, then man said the part of the menu which said one of the meals came with chips was not right and it just came with veg...food was actually nice, which is a shame as service makes all the difference to repeat custom, which we won't be now!!

Was late and also left on doorstep on the cold. Had no idea it was there. Not a lot of time to reward as baby woke back up for feed. Are a cold meal with partner. Really important these in time. Last three meals with just eat have been 1 that was one hour late one 25 mins early and this one 30 mins late. I won’t be ordering from just eat again. I don’t think

Me and my girlfriend ordered tonight and she ordered a salt and pepper chicken, she then proceeded (3 hours later) to come down with a fever and nausea. Which are both signs of eating undercooked chicken. Need I say less

Always accepted that this restaurant is very expensive but their food was always amazing. Tonight we found that the food was mainly vegetables and the quality had somewhat slipped. The prawn toast was burnt too. The price was far from justified. Very disappointed

The mixed vegetarian starter was passable but the King prawn Thai Green tasted like a bag of sugar had been poured into it. It was extremely sweet and granular. Definitely won’t be returning to this restaurant.

Food good on time ,but service charge and delivery charge were to High half the price of the meal don’t think I’ll use the service again.

It was a lovely meal. The staff were lovely and made sure I was comfortable whilst I waited for my collection. The food was well cooked, definitely freshly made to order and very hot. The only criticism is that the menu is limited in some respects. We would love to see some new additions appear as options!

Ordered the veg dumplings, but got the prawn ones instead. Extremely disappointing as they were ordered for a vegetarian so were inedible.

It has a lot of chili when i requested a little spicy only then it has a lot of sauce on it which removed the crispiness of the prawn.

Been here numerous times before and gotten beef satay, always loved it . Today’s went in the bin with the rest of it , £25 wasted

I don't usually leave reviews but this place was outstanding. Food was amazing, the options for vegans is brilliant and the delivery was quick. I do suggest the coconut rice. Beautiful. This is my goto takeout now. X

Very fast service, ordered and delivered in just under 30 minutes. The food is delicious, fresh and complex flavors, much better quality than any Chinese takeaway we tried before. You pay a little bit more, but well worth it!

Rip off Did not get my food they delivered to the wrong address did not read my note to the driver so he delivered to the right address I rang restaurant said they was not them lost out on £19 just eat says I’ve got to wait 14 days for a review if I get my money back or not will never order of this site again it’s a joke so got no food and lost £19

Really lovely food here. Lots of choice. Sweet and sour was gorgeous. They did forget one dish, so we had to chase. But apart from that no issues at all. Authentic Chinese, made freshly and came out piping hot. Would definitely go again.

Overpriced for ingredients in our dishes and portion size. Chips were dry and had not been cooked fresh.

Have ordered multiple times and food has always been amazing. This time however my food was rather cold but delivery was quick as usual.

螺狮粉真的特别特别特别难吃，还特别贵，不如自己在中超买一包自己煮。鸡汤米线更难吃，几乎就是没味道的纯米线，大家真的别点他家任何跟面、米线有关的东西，真的难吃绝了

Lovely as always, generous portions all around. Cantonese shredded beef was cooked well and not drowning in sauce, spring rolls were still nice and crispy. Salt, pepper & chilli chips were good, but could do with a bit more aromatics.

Food used to be excellent, however recently the noodles used for the 'thin yellow noodles' dishes have been changed to much thicker medium noodles. Please consider returning to the previous noodles as they were much better!
