I confess bias. If you remember an outfit from when it was a little hole-in-the-wall operation in Soho, managed to get another venue together and then, suddenly, years later, grew exponentially, you might naturally want to see it win, having been a big proponent for years. It goes even deeper: this particular venue is the site of shared misery with ill-treated colleagues and hopeful, ambitious plans with good friends (the kind where you get drunk on a Tuesday afternoon because there is no longer any job to go to on Wednesday morning and you can't really afford it). Yet, while there is nothing obvious—the service remains commendable; the design values high—there's that sneaking feeling that the reason that your favourite dishes are getting smaller and more expensive is to balance the cost of the trendy (albeit lovely) Aesop liquid soap in the toilets. I really want this place to pull itself back to the authentic Spanish tapas bar about which I have been a zealot—least of all for the Proustian triggers for me. Okay, so I can deal with its remit now embracing the Mediterranean in general. But I'm not quite feeling that jazz-hands-sing-it-like-you-mean-it commitment that predates discernible accountant input on pushing the profit margin. Not trashing it. But no longer feeling it.

Before Fernandez and Wells expanded into chain, the food used to be great - they used to source some really great Spanish produce. Now, half of the menu isn't even Spanish, the portions are tiny and the standard of ingredients and cooking mediocre. It's fine for a glass of wine - just avoid eating there.

I needed a coffee and a treat - have passed this place a few times, so thought I'd pay it a visit. There is both takeaway and table service, with a sign, clearly saying please take a seat and someone will be with you shortly.I sat and waited, admiring the selection of yummy-looking cakes.I waited and waited, but the staff seemed more bothered about talking to each other, than serving me.Eventually, a Guy said he'd be with me in a moment - after a few more minutes, he took my order.A few minutes after, the coffee arrived and so did the cake - carrot & coconut. The coffee was lovely - the cake was tasty on the inside, but the outside was quite firm - this was obviously from the previous day!I paid, then left.I have to say, spending nigh-on £8 for a coffee and a slice of cake is a bit steep, even by London standards. The coffee was on the VERY small side, too. I have no objection to eating yesterday's 'bake,' but why don't they say-so and reduce the cost of it? Don't 'fob' the customer off, with fresh bakes, when it clearly isn't.And the staff and service - slow, very slow, and don't expect service with a smile, as you won't get it!

My husband loves browsing Denmark Street when we are in the area. This place was a surprisingly good find in the former job centre. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The cakes looked amazing, but our eggs (me, chorizo omelette) (husband, 'broken eggs' with potatoes and prosciutto) were very filling so we will have to come back and sample them another day. The interior is 'distressed' (unfinished flooring, walls etc), but very comfy and had large windows from where you can watch the world go by. I'm not sure if it's because we visited on a Sunday, but there were many brunchy options. Oh, and the ingredients were top notch. We will definitely be going back.

This place could drive you insane. I it took over 30 minutes to get a coffee, which wasn't the coffee I ordered. There are no pastries or anything sweet to accompany it. It seems to pride itself on wine, and cheese and and cured meats. But the wine selection is very poor and only 2 wines are offered by the glass. The waitress laughed at us when we asked for more details other than "red". Only small glasses are available. We hoped to have a mixed plate of Manchego and an iberian ham, but this was not allowed. The menu is very uninformative. Water provided on the tables is not chilled. Mostly, the service is just appalling.

Even though Tottenham court is swamped with cranes, building sites and mainstream shops and cafes it was refreshing to find a little cafe tucked away from the hustle and bustle. I had clients visiting from Scotland and we had a press day nearby so Fernandez and Wells was perfect for a quick bite to eat. They had a delicious range of handmade paninis and sandwiches available all displayed on entrance and an expansive menu of hot food too. It feels like an independent but there's now half a dozen dotted across the capital. Good selection of sharing tapas plates or bigger 'boards' offering a mix of Spanish and French styles inc delicious hummus, Manchego cheese, Iberico Jamon and awesome roasted, salted Padrón peppers (from northwestern Spain - a Galician speciality called pementos de Padrón).The coffee is sourced to their own specification and I have to say was just as I like it - a consistently smooth, deep flavour with no harsh notes. Worth visiting here for the coffee alone. However, the food isn't cheap if you also indulge in a glass of their rather acceptable Rioja! c.£30 a head if you do a reasonably filling lunch, wine & a flat white.

On a lunch hour (and I stress the word 'hour'), I met a friend for lunch here. After chatting and reading the menu for 5-10 mins we ordered, so far so good. My friend's sandwich came within 5 minutes. My eggs however, took another 25 minutes. This lead to us both eating alone. I asked about my eggs twice and was told "it's coming mate". We were running out of time before lunch was over and still no food. As I got up to approach the kitchen, my eggs came; "There you go mate.". A discount or compensation was not offered. I requested a discount on them as they had taken so long, "Course." I was told. After the meal, the bill came, I had been discounted 10% of the bill, so £1.34, I felt this was absurd. After speaking once again with the kitchen, I was discounted a more realistic sum. Food is good but I'm sorry to say that they don't know what service is in here.

My wife had seen good reviews, so we popped in for a quick lunch - and I really glad we did.Pleasant, unfussy service. I had toasted cheese, my wife had roast pepper omelette and both were absolutely delicious. The food is Spanish accented - primarily the breads and meats - and they focus on relatively simple combinations, with very high quality ingredients cooked simply - and very well!We had coffees after and they were both great - good coffee, hot and strong, which, regrettably, isn't necessarily what you get in other places - that should know better.I'm really very pleased to have found this place in an area with lots of eateries, but not necessarily that many I'd make an effort to revisit - and it's near the British Museum!Go there soon - you won't regret it.

The sizes that same out wasn't that big, the flavour wasn't so bad, but the bit that I found very disturbing and VERY unhygienic, is the banana and sourdough is served with a big tub of butter and not thrown away from once it's been used but is passed around from table to table. Несколько раз встречался в этом месте с коллегами по работе и друзьями, когда был в Лондоне. Очень уютная атмосфера и приятные официанты. Надеюсь, что булочки с корицей до сих пор сохранились в меню.

One of my go to cafés for meeting as there is always lots of space and the coffee is excellent - I typically go for the stumpy. The food and cakes are always good, and they also serve Vichy Catalan reminding of being back in Barcelona.

The title says it all.The interior is lovely, minimal and stripped back - large open spaces with plenty of room for family and friends. I walked in and the waiter looked at me like i had 2 heads and then carried on talking to his friend. I waited for a while at the bar until a different waiter took my order.I went and sat down with my brother, it was super cold outside so we were happy to have a place to sit. 30 minutes later a different waiter arrived with tea.Eventually we left and walked straight past the team of numbskulls who did not even say goodbye. Later on that night i remembered that they had not even charged me for the tea! Lets put it down to Karma..

We went there for an apero and most of the things we asked were not available. Regarding price: 21£ for a small jamon plate, too much. 11£ for 4 bears ok. The ambience is nothing special and even if the service was nice, the quality and price is not balance. I will not go again.

I like going here on a Friday night after work for drinks and a bite to eat with colleagues. Tapas is my absolute favourite and they do it very well.

We bust this place in the London Fashion week and the tapas were very nice and the location had a good feeling around it, service wasn't great but in a tapas bar, if is not critical. Very nice

Having just read the other reviews not sure we went to the same place! Interesting building and very good offer of wines, sherries and tapas which are authentic and served by a mainly Spanish crew. Will certainly go back to see if we enjoy it as much second time around.

Loved the atmosphere and raw environment the place carries. Coffee took a while to arrive, however despite the lack of good service, the desserts and coffee tastes great!

I've been to two branches of this cafe in the past month and I really want to love it but it is a bit pretentious and the customer service is pretty poor. Coffee is good though and the padron peppers are delicious. Just don't expect service with a smile.

We stumbled on this cafe while looking for lunch. It looks quite cool and contemporary so we stopped. Great music. Good food, terrible coffee, and very average service. The people were nice enough but I got the impression they couldn't organise themselves out of the proverbial "wet paper bag". Won't return.

Just went in and ordered a sandwich off the countertop to have toasted, and a macchiato. Was told to take a seat and it would be brought over. After fifteen minutes waiting, trying to catch the eye of a staff member, I accepted that none of the staff were preparing my order any time soon, but as soon as I put my coat on to leave, the man who took my order spotted me (funny that) and ran over with the sandwich (which had been sat in the toaster for so long the bread was like a giant crouton), set it on the table and ran off again. No apology, not a word. Shame he didn't stick around so I could have reminded him I ordered a coffee too.Went to pay for my sandwich - begrudgingly, but it arrived eventually and I ate it so felt okay paying for it - and was still expected to pay for a coffee that never arrived. Tried to argue but was told it "wasn't a problem" - er, I think that's for me to decide? - and someone made it for me there and then in a takeaway cup. I felt completely pressured into handing over my money and didn't want to make a scene so I paid, like a fool. Appallingly rude service and just to top it off, the coffee didn't taste all that good.

Hidden away on a street in Soho, Fernadez and Wells attracts those desiring a simple looking coffee shop, with a good selection of cakes, sandwiches and drinks.Unlike some of the more fancy cafés that London has to offer, Fernadez and Wells exhibits a simple and rustic looking interior. With room inside to seat 12-18 people and, providing the weather is nice, further seating outside, Fernadez and Wells creates a nice balance between intimate coffee shop and cosy settling point. With its thin benches and metal stools lined up against the walls, this coffee shop is more of a quick caffeine stop or quirky socialising place, as opposed to one that you'd lounge around in all afternoon with a book in hand.Despite its wooden floors and dirty white walls, Fernadez and Wells appears stylish in appearance, with the dark barista bar and informative chalk boards creating an aesthetically pleasing contrast. However, if you're not intentionally looking out for this place it is more than easy to miss. Fronted by a large window that acts as a primary light source for the cafe, the Fernadez and Wells logo is hidden away in the bottom left hand corner. In contrast to its simple appearance, it's vast array of cakes and sandwiches prove almost irresistible to it's queuing customers. Although tempted by its moist looking cakes, a single slice can set you back between £3-5, meaning each bite must be savoured and not savaged. Like the food, the selection of coffee, teas and soft drinks makes it accessible for any passerbye who happens to stumble in. Though varied in the way you can have your coffee - cappuccino, latte, flat white, black and so on - you are limited to a single roast that may not suffice the more experienced coffee enthusiast. Being an anti-milk and anti-sugar coffee drinker myself, the black coffee which arrived in a vintage style glass tumbler was pleasantly bitter but not too overwhelming for anyone who prefers not to have their socks blown off with each sip. Although at the top of most "Best coffee shops in Soho" lists, the pleasantness of my visit to Fernandez and Wells doesn't have me hooked as a certain returner just yet.

Something's not quite right....Have been to the Somerset House location a few times, so was pleasantly surprised when out with friends to see a new addition to the F&W chain.Big mistake......staff very unwelcoming, not fashionably moody, just plain rude, especially the manager or was it the owner.First up the pastries, even though it was morning, we naturally expected fresh to be fresh that day, not fresh yesterday or the day before. What we had was definitely old stock, probably kicking around from the day before. As for the coffee, run of the mill and slightly burnt tasting, and took ages to arrive and when it did the cups were overfilled and lacking in heat.If this was a ship, I'd give it a wide berth

I admit that I broke my own cardinal rule of cafés. If a place serving coffee does not smell like coffee, avoid it.This is my first visit to Fernandez and Wells. It's a lovely looking place but I decided against having cake as it looked like it had been sitting on the counter a while and was dried out. We ordered 2 coffees to drink in. It was not at all busy but it took a very long time for the coffee to arrive. When it did, it was well presented, but really rather bland. I won't be visiting again.

Visited when this branch had been open for less than a week, so slightly wonky service -- overanxious waiter, muddled order for coffee (hard to get wrong!), confusion as between written menu and what was actually available -- it IS possible to get wine by the glass, although the menu doesn't say so. ...No doubt this will settle down to the standardised but basically OK middle of the road (MOR) offering that has seemingly been honed through developing F&W into a multi-branch operation. IT'S FINE (and yes, of course, they offer fino and other sherries). Nice ham, salami and cheese, looks attractive ... It's all basically OK.The only complaint would be if one compared it to places like Brindisa in Borough Market where the range of both food and drink is much wider and more imaginative. Here we seem to have four of everything ... 4 white wines etc.The main attraction is that this is such a good location, and there are few alternatives here. Denmark Street = London's "tin pan alley" -- just south of Centre Point (Tottenham Court Road), off Charing Cross Road, just north of Charing Cross Circus, not far from Leicester Square.

Criticise Starbucks all you like but serving a decent cup of coffee is the one thing that they do well - loads better than Costa amongst others. The only better one is Roasting Plant Coffee in the Strand but then that place is several rungs up the ladder

Llevamos más de 45 minutos esperando La comida no era fresca Sabor poco divertido La sopa estaba congelada en el medio, así como la comida congelada. El chef no estaba limpio Realmente no estoy satisfecho No volver

Extremely overpriced for juices with basically mostly contain ice water! Charging £7 for this is pure cheek though they were busy so people are clearly willing to pay for it. Very loud, dirty tables as they don't have enough staff to clean and serve, and disappointing they do not have a toilet as they do serve food. Will not go again.

My mum and I popped in late July. Had a lovely milky coffee (trad caff order!) and we shared a few fresh pastries. Staff were polite and helpful and gave us a bag to take home what pastries we couldn't finish.
