Fat Hippo Birmingham in Birmingham

Seems like so many before us have had a similar experience with the service. Food was great but never felt welcome. Staff were not interested and just really very angry. Lots of huffing and eye rolling, it felt like we were at a Karen's Diner!! A confusion on which starters had bacon and which had facon meant the unhelpful waiter storming back to the kitchen , coming back in a foul mood to say they are remaking the one with facon. We were given the bill before even having chance to look at the desert menu. They definitely wanted us to leave so they could have an early night. I wish I'd have read these reviews before going. It begs the question whether management are actually addressing this like some of their replies to these reviews suggest.

Visited to try the buffalo chicken wings and a double chicken burger. Service was fast and pleasant and waiter was lovely however. The food was fried in very old oil so the wings tasted very greasy, lacked so much flavouring; didn’t have much salt or even any of the ‘buffalo’ sauce. The chicken burger was average, fried in the same old oil, probably your local McDonald’s can serve a better burger. Would not return again

Just excellent, On the afternoon we visited it wasn't busy. We really struggle to find a good burger for my wife who is gluten free. This had everything we needed. Burgers were tasty and succulent. Staff were attentive but not overpowering. Thank you fat hippo for a great experience

Great burger and loved the Cajun spiced fries.

Doesnt look like much on the outside but... Everything about this place is awesome! The atmosphere, the staff, the food, the music... all designed to make you feel welcome. A great gluten free menu with lots of choice and full flavours. Friendly and attentive staff but not in your face all the time. Background music but not so loud you can't have a conversation. Portion sizes are large with generous toppings and sauces. Just a wow experience! We will be back.

Great alternative to the burger norm especially if you're Gluten free. Staff were attentive but not overpowering and food was hot and tasty and the desserts were just enough to round off a great experience. Well done Fat Hippo

Doesn't look much on the outside but wow! What a place. Amazing food with lots of full flavour gluten free food options, friendly and welcoming staff (Russ and Julia), background music but not so loud you can't have a conversation, generous portions of everything- just awesome!

We visited Fat Hippo just before Christmas and the chicken was top notch! However, the service was awkward and slow considering it was quiet ( 4 tables). The atmosphere lacked warmth. Overall, decent food and convenient location. But, if you’re looking for chicken with a cool atmosphere and better atmosphere, try Bonehead.

Had the most amazing burgers and cookie dough pud. The atmosphere is very chilled and inviting. Russ and julea llooked after us and made feel welcome and looked after. Would definitely recommend.

Came in as a walk in on a busy Saturday and the managed to get us in right away! Food was great I definitely recommend the Swiss Tony Burger!! Onion rings are a tad oily but absolutely massive so not much to complain about!! Service was quick and efficient and all the staff were lovely.

Went today to grab a quick lunch to go around 1.15pm, the lady that helped me was absolutely amazing, she gave me the best service I have received in Birmingham so far! She was very knowledgeable in the menu, being vegan that was very unexpected for me! Usually I have to scroll thru the entire menu myself! She recommended their new vegan chicken sandwich which was absolutely delicious, huge vegan chicken chunk as well, well big portion size and amazing taste and quality! She went out of her way to help me out with my glass coke bottle situation as well which I very much appreciated! Absolutely brilliant knowledgeable staff and amazing food choices to suit any diet! I will be back for sure! 👌🏼 Veronika xx

Have been to Fat Hippo in other locations but this one was disappointing. The burger was dry and didn’t have much taste and the cheese balls were inedible - greasy and tasteless. The fries were also a bit soggy and over-salted. A 330 ml can of beer for £5 is also absurd. The only positive was that the staff were friendly. DOV: 16/01/2025

Ordered multiple burgers on Uber eats. The fries were delicious and fresh. The beef burger was satisfactory. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the buttermilk chicken burgers. Some of the thigh meat had skin / vein on it. The fillet was over cooked on the outside (so the batter tasted a bit bitter at some points) and the inner meat was oily. I think there was a temperature issue when frying. Otherwise they would have been delicious.

Really quick and friendly service. Total visit was less than 30 minutes for 2 meals and 2 drinks. Perfect for the lunch break.

Not recommended. We were just kicked out. Two people waited normally and were put at a table for four by the male waiter, after ordering and waiting for a long time, a lady who appeared to be the manager (as she was shouting at the waitress who came to replace the items in our order) came over and rudely asked why we were sitting here, we should have waited in the waiting area etc. After that we were kicked out which was really weird.

Had a lovely time at the restaurant. Manager Russ was very helpful when we were choosing our food. Service could have been a little quicker but I'm guessing because there was a large group eating that slowed things down a bit. The food itself was great. The portions were huge and I'd have probably skipped the starters if I'd known. We ended up taking food home. I would highly recommend.

AWFUL... VEGAN/VEGGIE AVOID!!! VEGANUARY FAIL. 7/01/25 I brought my family out to celebrate VEGANUARY.... We all ordered burgers, 2 adult meals, 2 kids meals, with 'Fakon' and 'cheeze' Stressed they needed to be 100% vegan.. assured they were. Waited for our meal. Burgers arrived. Thank goodness my son checked... They put REAL BACON in both the kids burgers. They probably put dairy cheese in it too... And they were in brioche (non-vegan) buns. When I mentioned it the server rolled his eyes tried to argue with me that I asked for BACON.... "Why would I but PIG FLESH in a vegan burger" The meals were remade. Returned with HALF the original amount of tatortots side... ! They didn't even apologise...! We could've so easily bitten into that. Absolutely disgusting... Infact the manager/shift lead just removed the plates didn't even speak to us. Didn't offer desserts or drinks? Just say back down on his phone.. I waited 10 minutes then had to ask for the bill. The last time we ate here they gave an actual CHICKEN burger to a vegetarian member of our party. They bit into it too! There seems to be no care... It almost feels intentional... It's not ok. We won't be eating here again. And if you have an allergen or dietary request I just wouldn't trust them with to cater. Disgusting.

Good service and great food especially considering it was the Christmas rush. We booked a table for 6 and were seated within 5 minutes. Drink orders were taken promptly and despite a bit of wait for the drinks to arrive it was nothing the over the top. One of the party is a celiac but everyone really enjoyed their food and left nice and full.

First ever vist to a Fat Hippo on 14th Dec 2024. Not impressed at all l. Rude front of house. Sat near bar. Very loud machine or grinding noise l. We requested beef be well cooked. My pork was raw and so too was the beef. Informed the server that it was raw. The person from front of house femail in her mid to late 40s informed me quite rudly that that's how there pork is served. Not once was we asked or informed that it was served us. She then said she would take it away and cook it some more then return it. That is crossed contamination. No offer to remove it from the bill or to replace it. Never eat anymore. Disgusted to have eaten and then to find my meat was raw especially pork. Complaint has been filled

Walked in off street and waited to be seated. 2 staff serving and seemed to take a while for someone to acknowledge us. Took to table and then waitress took order near enough straight away. Food and drink arrived quickly. Had a chicken burger, big portions but not a lot of chicken in it, mainly batter. Too full for pud. Asked for bill and was given wrong one however waiter realised when saw my confused face. The whole time we were there I don’t think I saw either staff member smile. They were busy but better service would have been nice. Shame really as they were working hard.

Great little place with super friendly staff. Good allergen info and responsibility and the food was great! I’d ask for the ‘little’ burgers to be full time rather than weekdays as the portions are huge.

This place is brilliant & one of the better burger places I've been too. But it just doesn't hit the same as its counterpart in Newcastle. The newcastle was is its origin so probably explains why. They cater for gluten allergies which is good. Selection of drinks is limited. Staff slightly unprofessional at this specific branch. Would go for vapes outside the front door during service. Still recommend it though if you're not bothered about the bad things mentioned above!
