We have been going to Falkos for years. The restaurant is beautiful and quirky. The food is excellent 👌 as always and I don't mind the increase in price as everything has gone up, that is life. But the service is absolutely terrible 😞 It has gone down the drain for some time but this time was the pits. Come on Falko!!! I am German and know how it should be, so get your act together.

Prices have gone threw the roof. Two cakes and two coffees 1 large, 1 small £16.00. Cakes arrived at the table and coffee arrived about 10 mins later. No table service, you go to the bar and order. They don't even carry the cakes to the table for that price. No service worth talking about. Don't think I'd return. Bought two malted plain rolls to take away £1.80 absolute piece of nonsense.

First visit here, lovely cafe though quite dim at some of the tables. I was looking forward to some German baking having been to Germany many years ago and loved the food. Great choice of sweets treats and an eclectic choice on the lunch menu. Order and pay at the bar, take your goodies to the table. Then wait ages for your coffee to arrive hence the 3 stars, drinks at the same time as cake would have made 5 stars. I would also add it was the dearest tea and coffee i've had anywhere.

Perfectly adequate cafe, perhaps service could be a bit better, but the food & drinks were excellent. Whenever we're in the area we'll call in just to buy some of the Lebkuchen cakes to take away. They have a wonderful selection just before Christmas!

Yes you close the kitchen at 3pm? Yes, #stupidI swear, every single time you visit here there will be something missing, something wrong, something out of stock or just something else has changed. Falko's is by far the most frustrating "cafe" I have ever visited and that's when you actaully want it to be good and you keep going back hoping that next time will be normal, but it never is. A cafe that closes at 5 but stops serving food at 3? One menu outside to look at then different menu inside?Lastly, the menu in general is very poor unless you eat nothing but pork schnitzel, the other offerings are either quite strange or ridiculously over priced.I think it's time to give up on this place.

I am not much of writing a review in places, but i hope this is constructive for improvement.I love Falko's cake and the beautiful cafe in Haddington but i have to say that the older lady is not so friendly, i do not want to say rude, just not front of house material.I ordered a black Forrest gateau with a coffee, i was told to go back and sit down and the cake would follow, i already had my coffee and waited and waited but the cake never came and my coffee was getting cold. S o i kindly explained to this really friendly and polite waitress that my coffee was cold and if i could please have a fresh one,my coffee cup was pretty much full, she quickly brought me fresh coffee but i was charged twice for the coffee which i didn't even drink.I do understand the difficult times now and not having enough staff, I also work in a cafe and i hope this is just a challenge to improve overall, customer service is everything in hospitality.i wish i could give a five star rating but the service needs to be more friendly.

Really friendly and excellent service. We went mid-week for brunch and enjoyed the Austrian sausage roll with horseradish and mustard. But the Sacher Torte was to die for, rich, filling and scrumptious. A bit disappointed in the limited selection of breads to take away, their old place in Bruntsfield had a more comprehensive selection (black rye and bread pretzels for example) but will see if this is the case when we next return.

It is our great fortune to have a world-class, award-winning pastry chef on our doorstep. We had visited Falko's previously in Gullane, and purchased cakes and biscuits at the farmers' market. We were delighted when they opened in the old George Hotel in Haddington. This review is written in December, but we drop in every week to sit in or take out. Or both, to be honest :)True to form, the cakes, tarts and pastries in Haddington are breath-takingly good. We have visited Konditorei in other countries, and while all certified Konditormeisters are as qualified as Falko, not all are as talented. It is mind-blowing think of the time it takes to craft even one cake to such an impressive standard. Then you realise there is a counter full of works of art! We like to watch out for the rare treats; special seasonal items like Printen (medieval gingerbread) and sea-buckthorn ice-cream. Add to that, the glorious bread, great food, coffee, tea, and lovely service make this our home-from-home.We are vegetarian, with one of us being allergic to tomato. The chef has always been able to accommodate us, particularly with advance notice. We have been in for coffee and cake, brunch, business lunches, birthday lunches and Christmas dinner parties. We have had meals with friends who are vegan and gluten-free, and there were options for both dietary requirements. There are limitations as there is bread flour in the air in the bakery, so it can never be completely gluten-free, but our friends have always found their choices to be excellent. There is only a tiny kitchen, so phoning ahead is a courtesy to allow them to prepare. On occasion, they will run out of some items, like bread, but it takes so long to make, they can't just run out to the shops to grab more. For us, that's just a reminder to get in early for the things we really like :)Tips to note: the main food menu is on the window; you can review that before you go in. You choose your cake from the counter, there isn't a cake "menu" as the large selection changes daily. For a quick lunch, you can get takeaway soup and roll from the counter, plus the fabulous cakes and bread. Understandably, it gets really busy on Saturdays and at lunchtimes, but it doesn't take much to be kind and patient. We appreciate that takes time to cook everything from scratch, this is slow food in all the best senses. There is plenty to keep you occupied, from selecting the cake you want from the counter to checking out the latest antiques for sale. In short, this place is a Haddington gem :)

The food was delicious and the service warm and friendly. I was however surprised to see six dogs come into the restaurant whilst we were there. Whilst most were well behaved it isn’t particularly pleasant to be eating a meal whilst a dog scratches away at the next table. So much attention is given to food allergies but dogs equally cause allergic reactions particularly in respect of asthma sufferers. Regrettably I won’t be eating here again.

Falko offers a fabulous selection of food and drink. The cakes are the most delicious I have ever had, and believe me, I have had a lot, as my ample girth will attest. They are superbly balanced and refined - uncommonly good taste and texture and not overly sweet. We picked up some artisan loaves and even more cakes on our way out. Being German, and a foodie, I have indeed found my happy place, or as I like to say, 'mein glücklicher ort'.

We were looking for a dog friendly place to eat on the way back from St Andrews to our Scottish Borders accommodation. We spotted the sign for the historic town of Haddington and found this great place to eat in the middle of the town. The concept is very much Black Forest German cuisine, superb cake and amazing coffee. The food is authentically German - I had a home made noodle dish with lardons, onions and cheese. It was piping hot, more than enough for two people and very tasty. My wife had an onion tart and salad. We followed this up with apple tart and coffee. The bill arrived and we were both surprised to find that (including drinks), the entire meal was just over thirty five pounds - fantastic value for what we had eaten.

Four of us sadly ordered the meatloaf and potato salad. Whilst not unpleasant, the meatloaf bore an uncanny resemblance to spam in texture and taste, being made almost entirely from finely ground pork.I know this is a traditional German recipe, but I much prefer my meatloaf made from pork and beef as well as onions. We all opted for cakes for desert. The others raved about their choices, but my carrot and hazelnut slice was glazed with marzipan icing which overwhelmed the slight flavour of the nuts.

We come here occasionally for dinner, with the pork and chicken schnitzel being our favourites! The layered cakes are not my cup of tea - just personal preference, however the tarts are always lovely. The service can be slow and I often see members of staff appearing stressed. We dropped into Falko on Wednesday lunchtime on the way to Edinburgh. The place was quite busy but we were seated and served without delay. Of particular note were the eggs florentine which had obviously been prepared with great care; crunchy Rösti, yolks still soft. We had planned to have cake as well but the pieces were rather large for after lunch so settled for take away, the spelt bread was also first rate. Popped in for coffee and cake. It was a Saturday afternoon and was very busy, so we expected to have to wait. First impressions - lovely decor, and very welcoming. The entrance can get very congested as this is where you have to wait to be seated and where the cake counter is so you get a lot of folk trying to see the cakes on offer. We waited a couple of minutes to be seated and another 20 minutes for our order to be taken. Both ordered coffee and the strudel and lemon tart. Took around another 20 minutes to arrive. The coffee didn’t come with a little pot of milk so I asked for some. Was half way through my tart when I had to ask again for some. The strudel was warm but soggy. It came with a little side order of cream. It would have been nice if the tart had come with cream too. Overall, what let our visit down was the very slow and sloppy service. Wouldn’t rush back.

My partner tried some less common varieties of tea (bags of which could also be purchased there), while I enjoyed a lovely cup of strong coffee. The slices of cake are enormous. I recommend the black forest cake - it was decadent. Wish we had time to come back for a meal - will do so next time.

Probably the best dinner I’ve ever had and certainly that I can remember. Great ambience, great food and great service. Important to add that it is excellent value for money.

So good to enjoy a new dining experience in Haddington. Very nice venue and wonderfully cooked food. Germanic / Alsation in style, the menu and wine list are both quite limited but the high quality of each compensates, wine is good VFM.

We go every week for eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale. Their attention to detail and quality food is exceptional. They bake their own bread and make fabulous gateau and cakes. There is a German theme running throughout which is lovely. High quality food, great service. One not to be missed!

Recently relocated from Gullane to Haddington so this was my first visit to the new Falko's.

We have just had a totally fabulous Saturday evening at Falko’s restaurant in Haddington - the move from Gullane has seen the business flourish - into much bigger premises in the former George Hotel at the base of the High Street - the ambience is lovely, with a sophisticated German decor cleverly intertwined with a decidedly Scottish twist!

We visited with family on a busy Saturday afternoon and were lucky to get a table. I was pleased with the great choice of teas, and in particular one of my favourites Blue Lady which tempts me away from my staple black coffee. The cakes all looked amazing and we were not disappointed with the Carrot Cake but you are paying for an artisan product so it is quite expensive.

Really cannot fault our evening meal. The service, ambience and food were all excellent. Certainly the best pannacotta I've ever had! Reasonably priced also, particularly for drinks.

Stumbled across this little gem on our way back to Northumberland. Great atmosphere, good service and well above average amd interesting food. Set (Valentine) meal, but with enough choice for individual taste. Candles, piano player - all good.

First time trying out Falko in the evening and the food was amazing. Main meals included venison with dumplings, pork cooked three ways, chicken with goats cheese and sun-dried tomatoes and cod. All freshly cooked and top quality. For dessert, crumbles and cake were fabulous. The choice of places to go in Haddington for a nice meal has really stepped up over recent months. Great to see

My friend and I had dinner here recently, we were given a warm welcome on our arrival and shown to our table, I had the pork dish which was fantastic! so many flavours in one dish, my friend had the 8oz sirloin steak which he raved about. The two young waitresses were very attentive and answered all our questions. Will definitely be back to try out other dishes an overall lovely dining experience.

This had been on the Tick list for sometime and did not disappoint in any way, especially after we were first in Gullane and was now closed. So worth the short drive. Great roll, excellent hand cut chips and amazingly delicious Strudel. Now going to try the Edinburgh one.

I’ve visited Falkos a few times since opened. It’s a massive plus for Haddington. Great baked bread, amazing cakes and pastries etc plus hot savoury food that has been sadly missing from Haddington. Although Jim and sons back in Waterside and serving massively improved fare.

We had had coffee here but this was our first evening meal. The premises are pleasant and have character. The menu changes every month which is good because it is sensibly short. There is a Getman flavour to certain dishes but not all. The food was good and plentiful as well as very well presented. Service was amateurish. The wine was dumped on our table without asking us if we wanted to taste it or have it poured. Although there were only two of us and few in the restaurant, the staff had no idea as to who had ordered what. This place is promising but has a bit to go.

Had dinner here yesterday evening , the food, service and atmosphere is absolutely top class. I had the chicken and my wife had the Trio of Pork, I’m having it the next time. 5 Star place not to be missed.

Went here for a coffee and ended up staying for lunch. Really good vibe and good food. Not too pricey, though the bill added up as we stayed for more than we went in for. The escalope was fantastic - real German cuisine but not too heavy! Only criticism is that service was a little patchy and some tables are too close - we moved in between.

We had a delightful lunch at East Coast Musselburgh today, choosing from their set menu. The restaurant is clean, contemporary, and tastefully decorated, which created a welcoming atmosphere. We both started with the mussels in a spicy tomato sauce that also served as a flavorful broth. The sauce had the perfect balance of heat and richness, complementing the fresh mussels. For mains, I opted for the Spaghetti Harbour, which was generously portioned and packed with clams and mussels. The seafood was cooked perfectly, and the dish was hearty yet refined. My wife had the King Prawn Calamari, which was served with a light, perfectly cooked batter, accompanied by crispy skinny fries, a fresh salad, and tartare sauce. She loved the combination of flavors and textures. We washed everything down with a refreshing Leith draught beer, which rounded off our meal perfectly. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and we felt well taken care of throughout our visit. The facilities were well-maintained, including spotless toilets, which is always a good sign. Overall, the meal was excellent value for money, and we left feeling satisfied and eager to return. I highly recommend East Coast for anyone looking for fresh seafood and a great dining experience in Musselburgh.

Literally just got up and walked out after reading the menu prices. We were here last summer for lunch, had one of the best bowls of Cullen skink soup to date, came back specifically for that today as in the area, only to find that for one bowl of soup as a starter was £9.95 or for a large bowl of the same is now priced at £15.95! FOR A BOWL OF SOUP! I know it’s a tourist hotspot, but take off your Dick Turpin masks No 12!!
