My family and I regularly head to Fagins for Sunday lunch. The food is fantastic! A proper home-cooked style lunch. Desserts are terrific too. I always stick to the sticky toffee :) Have a great selection of drinks and the staff are superb! Always such a great welcome and a great atmosphere, Here’s to our next visit.

First time here for dinner with a friend. I immediately liked the vibe of the front area in the pub. With a roaring fire and dim lighting it feel cosy. Good selection of drinks. Less keen on the back eating area as I felt it lacked the cosy feeling. Ordered mac n cheese for £8.95, which unfortunately arrived stone cold. I wondered if they’d forgotten to heat it. Asked for it to be re heated and it came out scalding. Ok taste. Two options for vegans and for gluten free so that’s good to see. Will visit again but maybe just get snacks to eat.

Ok first of all I do like this pub but normally I only visit it to eat as it is local rather than visit just for a drink. The menu is not large but the food is great. They also have some interesting ales The staff are friendly and seems like everyone knows each other as its serving a rather small community. You do get passing trade from cyclists who may have come off the Taff trail. The only problem I find is there have been times I have gone there for food to be told they are not serving any today. There is no parking but that is not a problem for me as it is a walk away from my house. Except for the inconsistency of serving food I think the place is great and food is good too.

Locals recommended that we had a meal at Fagin's. It's a very pleasant pub with tables outsid0e in the front. (The beer garden at the rear was not in use). A couple had scampi and chips with a side salad and the other couple had chicken curry half and half (rice and chips). Food was freshly cooked and portions were generous. Service was very good and friendly.

Visited on a Tuesday evening. Friendly staff. Good choice of beers. No nonsense food. Big portions cooked nicely. I had gammon egg chips which was £10 which was tasty and good value. Some friends had steaks which looked very good but were £16 which I thought was a bit pricey when considering the fairly basic presentation and surroundings.

Came here for a family gathering. We all had the Christmas menu, starters came and the soup was cold but the waitress was apologetic and was happy to change them. Seating wasn’t great, was a bit of a squeeze against a pillar. The main was lovely and extra pigs in blankets were brought out which was a winner. Desert I had the honeycomb cheesecake and it was delicious. Lovely service shame about the soup and the table arrangement. Aireyfairy

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We had been for food here several times before and had had good experiences, although my wife (a vegetarian) was reluctant as she had been underwhelmed by the vegetarian options before (unsurprising in a Chop house). Unfortunately this trip will be our last. Seven of us were eating and we called to book before we went, and were helpfully advised the kitchen closed at 2pm (we called at 1pm and got there at 1.20pm). We ordered, only just noticing the pizza menu on the wall (not on the paper menus) which prevented protestations from our 8 year old, who had hoped with we attend a pizzeria. After ordering, we were informed they were out of burgers and our 11 year old switched to pizza too. The food arrived and we were underwhelmed by the presentation. The steak arrived on a cold plate which meant it was tepid when started. The sausage and mash was mostly gravy. The steak and ale pie was served in a china pie dish and was garnished with a small amount of puff pastry. The vegetarian option was the best of the meal. Then the pizzas. Oh, the pizzas! The ham and tomato came with chorizo. The prawn and chorizo did not have any. We drew the landlady's attention to this and she offered to change it but, as this would mean one hungry pre-teen watching us eat for an indeterminate time, we attempted to transfer the chorizo from one to the other. We needn't have bothered. The pizzas consisted of a fresh dough base (good), cheddar cheese (poor) and a large quantity of sauce that I would bet money on being tomato ketchup (abysmal). If it wasn't, I have never tasted a more insipid, sugary, vinegary pizza sauce in my life. Our 8 year old (who was desperate for pizza and cannot stand ketchup) refused to eat it and I sacrificed my chips and made do with the tepid steak. Our 11 year old (who likes ketchup and told us the sauce tastes like the sauce we had with our chips at Five Guys (which was Heinz tomato ketchup) barely ate half. This is unheard of for even mediocre pizzas: he will usually eat a large pizza with little effort and still be wanting more. We complained and the pub refunded the price of the rejected pizza. No one had come to ask how our food was after it was served and it appeared clear they were not particularly interested in knowing. Having paid when ordering (sensible on the part of the restaurant, as we would have begrudged paying afterward) we we pleased to leave as soon as we had finished in order to get home and feed our children properly. It is a real shame. The venue is characterful and has always been a popular stop on our cycle rides for a real ale. The menu promises a lot and I can only imagine the chef has either changed or burned him or herself out. I certainly wont return to eat and would be reluctant to return for a drink.

Called in just before 6 pm on a Friday evening . Plenty of people in the bar but got a table for 4 easily , Ordered drinks from the bar two of which were real beer from a barrel , opened a tab without an problem and then ordered food . Steak and Ale pie , Scampi , Gammon and egg , and a smokey chicken and bacon salad . Came up quickly and everyone enjoyed their meal . I admit to having been in there on a wed evening on and off for informal meetings and eaten there ,usually sausage and mash but this was the first time as two couples and every one was pleased with my suggestion of eating there . Will we go again yes . By the way , wood fire in the corner , past experience says don't sit to close you'll roast , Value for money , very good . I think the staff could get rushed off their feet if it got really busy but they all knew what they were doing ,cleared the tables quickly etc . A happy customer !

We popped in on a whim and got a table with no problem. A great welcome and friendly, efficient service throughout. The choice of Sunday lunch was beef, lamb or chicken. We both had beef. A very generous portion of meat, thickly cut and well cooked. The veg were hot and perfectly cooked to our liking, not mushy at all.. The roasts were good and a generous portion! Good Yorkshire. My on criticism was that, for our taste, the gravy was a bit too salty. But at least it came in a separate jug not swimming on the plate. The pudding selection was small but varied so all in all a good experience. And fantastic value for money at £9.99. Lovely drinks selection. Including real ales.. Highly recommended.

Fagin's Ale & Chop House in Taffs Well is one of two pubs in the village close to Cardiff, the only one offering frech made food seven days a week. The pub looks small from the outside but it's fairly big when you enter - they've got more then ten Tables for the hungry and some more for the thirsty. the guest room comes along with a cosy atmosphere, a nice warm fireplace (depending on the Season) and a very friendly staff (second time you go there, they would know exactly what drink you want). The Selction of beers and ciders is quite above the usual in the surrounding and those not so well known are worth trying - surprise guaranteed. When it comes to the menue you will find a selection of more or less traditionell english and welsh dishes rangin from haddock & chips (good) to sirloin steaks, ribeye steaks (good), lamb liver, lamb shanks (very good) and dayly specials to moderat prices between seven and 15 Pound. According to my wife, the deserts (you should ask for what's available) are perfect. We stayed in the village for a while, tryed some of the dishes and were satisfied every time. You get loads of food on the dishes - sometimes hard to handle and need a short one afterwards. Or two. Conclusion: Best rate for a country pub a bit awaqy from the toutist trails.Angelika Schaefer & Gerd Jenzowswki, Berlin, Germany

Just had a meal here. I had steak and chips and OH had liver and mash. The food arrived within 5 minutes of being ordered and so was clearly pre cooked or microwaved. My steak was barely warm, and chewy. OHs liver and mash really salty. Arrived at 6:30 and had eaten and were out of the door by 7:00. Btw, in spite of the title, there were no chops on the menu. On the upside there was a good range of real ale. My advice, go for the beer not the food.

We have been here a few times for Sunday lunch, which is lovely. On our most recent visit we invited friends and 4 of us and 2 babies went. We booked a table for 12 and arrived early. The food was fine and after we ordered more drinks. About 1.10pm the watress comes over and says that she didn't want to rush us but they had people waiting for our table!! We were then asked the move to the bar. On vacating the table there was only 1 table in the bar with 4 seats, god knows what would have happened if there wasn't. Suppose we would have had to stand with the drinks.Needless to say we drank the drinks and left. I understand booking in more bookings but I would have expected to be able to sit at my table for 1.5 hours at least! Not rushed to eat and to leave.

Chips were simply delicious, best chips i've tasted in many an eating establishment i have to say. My ham was very nice too but just 1 slice was a bit tight even @ £6+.Best about this pub though has to be the real ales. if your a beer buff this is definitely a place you must visit.Parking can be awkward around there.I have a dog but this place allowed dogs & at 1 point there were no less than 4 of them in there, one didn't like the others as i barked when another was nearby. It was too clicky, as i suggest, i waited for 2 locals to get served despite being at the bar before them. None of that politeness you can get in so many places where a beer buyer will say 'oh, this bloke's first', oh no, not in here! Barmaid must have thought i was Mr Invisible. So, go for the food & the beer & ignore the ignorami that can clearly frequent the place.

I had steak and ale pie with dry, cheap, burnt pastry. Inside was tasty enough but the meat was mostly fat. Others in our party had haddock and chips. It looked like it all came from cheap packets. Food is good pub grub, the chips are particularly nice! Will definitely be back again and the fact the bar area is dog friendly is a massive bonus. Lovely place for a meal or a cheeky pint

Probably the best kept beer in the area. Friendly and helpful staff, food very good - never disappointed in the food and drink every time we visit.

Fagin's is one of those pubs that doesn't try cater to the masses, it caters for a rather niche market- Real Ales and Ciders - but don't worry, it does offer something for everyone with a fair selection of the more well known brands and brews..With a good selection of real ales and ciders, and reasonably priced proper pub-grub, it's the sort of place that you'll want to visit time and again, especially if you're into real ale. The list of real ales changes regularly so there's always something to keep ones interest. The food is fresh, homely and well cooked and the service is....well, relaxed would be the best way to describe it :)

We wanted to try somewhere new and decided to try Fagins. The bar was quite busy when we arrived, but the restaurant was empty, despite it being a Friday night. We ordered the burger and chips with a side of onion rings, and we're very disappointed - the portions were a good size, but the burger consisted of 2 mass produced patties covered in a salad. One of the burgers was burnt on the outside and quite tasteless. Wouldn't be going there again.

Always enjoy a visit to Fagins, real ales are well kept, selection changes regularly and prices are ok, food is pretty good and also fairly priced, staff are very friendly and efficient and usually a good mix of customers to create a good atmosphere. Live music Thursday and Saturday which usually draws a good crowd. Always worth a visit.

Was expecting more & better based on previous reviews. Went as 2 couples on a Friday. Arrived early and easily got a seat. Nice bar, good beer, reasonably priced. Then went through for our reserved table and had to chase for someone to place an order. Service was slow with only 2 people working. Food was good and enough of it. Again, slow service and no offer of dessert. Paid at bar and felt like I was no different to anyone sat in any part of bar drinking anything, despite having just consumed 70 quids worth of stuff.Disappointed and expected more.

A friend and i visited last week. Great, tasty and so tender rib eye cooked perfectly. Too small a portion of chips for me and salad likewise. Staff friendly and good range of ales. Best advice though is to eat in the dining room if you can as there's too little seating in the bar. Would definitely go there again based on that super steak and the ales. Atmosphere convivial in this quiet village pub. Parking can be a nightmare though, lots of double yellow lines too close to pub so street parking can be tricky although not too busy a road generally.

Lovely atmosphere, log burner lit as soon as the weather gets cool. Great hosts, real ales and regular live music. Typical pub food with a few home made specials too, and always well cooked and presented. The menu is the same whether you eat in the bar or restaurant, and I've always had excellent meals here. Simon's garlic and chilli chicken is beautiful!

Having lived in Taffs Well now for a few years - Fagins is indeed a gem and a damn good pub with a selection of real ales & good food. Sunday lunches are a must and it is recommended that you book a reservation. The bar food is excellent too and I recommend Simons special curry! In October it has a beer and cider festival and is well worth a visit if you are a real ale drinker,This lasts for 3 days with live music in the evening too.I love visiting here though on a Friday night in the winter months for a couple of pints after work with wood burner on adds to great atmosphere the pub already has
