Beautiful location with fantastic views, sadly food and service let them down. Definitely over priced for what was produced. Not family oriented in the slightest, no kids menu at all. No atmosphere, unexperienced team with no etiquette.just wasnt worth the money at all.The food was terrible, bread was stale oh my , I could go on just don't waste your time.

Normally visit with dogs and eat out in the evenings whilst on holiday. Was extremely disappointed that it has now permanently closed with no explanation. The Eype Country Hotel it is attached to is 'residents only' now, which limits eating out in Eype.

In good weather the outside bar would be very enjoyable looking down the valley. However, when I was there in August the weather was too windy. The Smugglers Bar inside was very cosy and my evening meal was enjoyable with friendly fast service. Everyone made you feel at home.

We always try to pick carefully but this hotel linked bar restaurant just blew us away. Amazing food, home cooked and really delicious. I had the steak and ale pie and my wife the seabass. Both tasty - the pie was genuinely one of if not THE best I've ever eaten. Dog friendly and a lovely service from a very amiable waiter/barman. Highly recommend.

Well this place is just vanilla...a bit boring...ok...nice...etc. Tried the lasagne it was ok. The chips on the side were ok. The beer was ok. The woman with the two snappy yappy west highland terriers should have been evicted. Dog friendly... and a few friendly dogs, just not them westies. Outside terrace is a treat, beer in the sun great views, will go back for that and a bag of crisps I think. If this restaurant got its act together, sorted out the decor, improved the food it could be great. Rachel's meets Billy Winters would be ace result...I'll take 10% of 3rd year profits for my wonderful idea.

Although I'm sure the hotel is lovely, and it's clear that non residents are welcome in the smugglers bar,I don't feel that the bar is that welcoming.. We ate and drank there yesterday, the food was fine but it is a very sterile environment more cafeteria than bar.. Zero atmosphere and can't imagine a smuggler ever being there..So after a couple of drinks and food I took a chance and tried to order a night cap upstairs in a much nicer bar, before heading back to the campsite.. I almost succeeded until I was asked if I was a resident.. Shame...one barman with nothing to do and a customer happy to spend more money in the hotel..Saying that we are thinking of taking a winter break there.. So I would suggest trying to make the smugglers more attractive if you don't want non residents in the hotel bar.

Tried this place for lunch. If ever a title was misleading then this is it. "Smugglers bar" more like a seaside cafe. No atmosphere, cold and uninviting. In fact all the public rooms lack any ambience or style. It's as if someone has gone to The Range and bought a load of seaside merchandise and stuck it around the place. HOWEVER the food was delicious, well cooked and "melty in the mouth". Just give the place a ho ho ho and a bottle of rum and things would improve no end.

Rang several times prior to our visit to Eype to enquire about opening times and menusInformed them of the dates we would be on holiday in the area and asked if we needed to book - we were told yes for the restaurant but no for the bar and bar food.We therefore planned our day with the intention of going there this evening for drinks and a mealWe spent a beautiful day in Seatown and cane back, showered and then made our way to the smugglers bar.We were greeted by a member of staff who casually informed us that the bar was shut and the restaurant was only open to residents. She gave no explanation why which turned the evening on it’s head as this is the only bar/restaurant in the area in walking distance.Extremely disappointed.

My boyfriend and I stayed here at the weekend of 3/6/16 for 2 nights and it was lovely!! I have been holidaying in eype for 25 years and usually stay at a local caravan but due to space we chose to stay in this hotel and I am very pleased we did! The drive Down to the hotel is along a very narrow lane which proves difficult when approaching another car! But it's fine! On arrival we were shown around the hotel by a lovely lady (can't remember her name!) and she also showed us up to our room which was a nice touch! Our bedroom was a great size with a four poster bed. All clean and tidy with a great view of eype beach! Bathroom was clean and spacious! Breakfast both days were very nice with a great view of the beach! Lots of food choices available and the service/staff were also very good... We didn't have dinner there due to attending a wedding but the menu looked good enough :) Overall, yes I would recommend this hotel, great location and polite staff :)

We were looking forward to a break in a 'dog friendly' hotel as advertised and love taking our dog with us. We never leave her alone which is why we love going to dog friendly hotels and our dog is quiet, small and very well behaved. When we booked we were told it is dog friendly. When we arrived we were told we couldn't have breakfast in the main breakfast with the dog and couldn't have it in our own room either.. Even though there were separate rooms to eat in we were told by the manager it was ' too much hassle' to serve us less than 20 steps from the main breakfast room.. Rather rude for people like us looking for a hassle free break paying the sort of money they are charging for very old fashioned and dated rooms! He then told us to leave the dog in the car while we eat breakfast.. As if we can do that in the height of summer. If we had left her in the room she would bark and scratch and wasn't allowed to leave her in the room anyway. In the end after I made a fuss we were allowed to eat in the bar area but were poked around a corner away from everyone so no-one could see us.. Even more of a walk for the waitress.. Very rude to make it obvious he didn't want others to see us and our dog!!! The rooms wouldn't have been a problem, food was amazing, staff were all friendly and lovely and the only person who was rude was the man who runs the place and made us feel very unwelcome with our dog. Won't be returning and don't call yourself dog friendly when your not. Iv been to other dog friendly places and made to feel welcome and have separate places for you to eat if you want your dog with you. It's a shame as we have been twice and been made to feel the same both times so we will go elsewhere now.

This really is one of my favourite spots in Dorset. Almost at the end of an impossible road to drive down (because its so narrow, on coming traffic & walkers et al!), this establishment has an exquisite view from their terrace. On a warm autumnal day with a cerulean sky, could it get any better? Probably not.Sitting on that terrace & eating Portland crab sandwiches with an appley cider was divine. The bird song was particularly mellifluous on this visit too. We were especially looked after by a young man called Adam (I think?) but you were the guy who had just left Bournemouth after many years & to be of smart of appearance & beautifully mannered, made our lunch absolutely perfect. Thank you indeed young man.The coastal path is just a short walk from here & is probably thee most dramatic along the whole of the south coast. Yes, combine a walk with lunch ending up here! Heaven.Ten out of ten... all staff.

However, because only a fixed price 3 course dinner was offered which we did not want, we ordered instead from the Bar Menu which offered Fillets (plural) of Sea Bass with vegetables. What appeared was a plate with one small Sea Bass fillet, 6 potatoes, 3 or 4 small carrots and cabbage. When I pointed out that the menu indicated Fillets not a single fillet I was informed that the Chef decided whether it was one or two fillets bu how large they were. Apparently our small fillets we, according to the chef, "large" fillets so only one was provided. This little hotel is gloriously situated if you want to get back to seaside as it used to be. The hotel isn't perfect but everyone involved is extremely friendly and welcoming and the restaurant food will take some bettering. We've stayed here a number of times and keep coming back. The restaurant and lounge are spacious, light and airy and if you get good weather the outside patio area is great.Just down the lane is the beach, and little hut up on the cliff where the murder in the ITV serial "Broadchurch" was filmed. The beach is a hidden gem, easily missed if you don't know it's there and so calm in comparison to it's near neighbour West Bay. Look out for Whin Bridge, a converted railway carriage now used as a holiday let, as you amble down from the hotel to the sea (less than 5 minutes). Close to Victorian Bridport this place is one of Dorset's hidden gems - please don't tell too many of your friends about it, we want to find an empty bedroom next time we want to go.

We visited The Smugglers Bar with our dog for an evening meal. We ordered a Curry which came without the promised pompadom and a Pork Steak with Vegetables. The food was OK though the Pompadom took a long time to find! For afters we both had Creme Brulee. One was unusually soft inside but OK, the other was runny. The replacement was soft though not as runny. The room had a low ceiling which didn't help with noise levels. We also had to leave a debit card behind the bar which we had never done anywhere else - the alternative of paying for each course wouldn't work as the puds were below their card minimum. On a good day eating outside the view would have been fantastic but the road to the hotel is only just one car wide between mud banks and on a busy day you would be shuttling back and forwards a lot - even harder at night! This hotel was OK but we would not go back as there are many much better places as you can see from some of our other reviews.

We arrived relatively late - approx 8.25 & asked whether we could still order as food is advertised as being served until 8.30pm. We had a warm welcome from the staff. We sat on the outside terrace which had lovely views. Our order consisted of fresh cod, a steak & 2 lasagnes. The fish was fresh & tasted superb, the steak was well cooked & the lasagne portions were very large. There was just about room for a chocolate brownie sundae between the 4 of us! With a round of drinks the price came to £58 which was considered to be good. Also accomadating with a large bowl of water for the dog. Would definately recommend

Just taken family visiting us from NZ to Smugglers Bar for evening meal..We all chose the fresh fish special -Hake . Batter was light and crispy- Fish was moist and accompanying veg and trimmings lovely. Bar staff and waiting staff their usual efficient and happy selves. The relatives loved the smugglers bar and they drunk the Guinness which they said was delightful. Another successful visit to this welcoming restaurant and Hotel .. Thank you.

Lovely hotel and friendly helpful staff. Pricey at £350 B&B with very average rooms but good breakfast, although service very slow. Sadly not accessible for those with mobility disorders as no lift, steep stairs and few accessible bathrooms However, marvellous for lunch or dinner on a day out

We had a great dinner at the Arts Club. The food was wonderful, the staff were excellent and, being a lovely summer evening, we dined outside in the pretty and surprisingly quiet courtyard.

We were camping just down the road this past weekend and decided to have a browse - I'm glad we did as there was much more to this farm shop than I was expecting. Lots of different produce and gifts type things all quite nicely set out. Some things were sensibly priced considering you do expect to pay a slight premium at a farm shop (postcards 50p, fresh scones £1, clotted cream £1.99), but some of the prices were a little shocking - there were loaves of fresh bread at £4.50 and I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the price of ice cream being served at the side of the car park! Overall a worthwhile trip - the scones were delicious, good selection of ciders and got some lovely warm slipper socks. I'd recommend popping in if you're passing (the views are fantastic too) just don't expect any bargains.

Ate here Friday evening three of us had wood fired pizzas which were delicious, pleasant staff as always. On the Saturday two of us visited for lunch. We had crab sandwiches with a mixed leaf salad, they were tasty enough but £11 seems too much...

We wanted something less corporate for lunch and was pleased to find this cafe as it looked a little more old school and independent. The build your own breakfast offered great choice and when I said I fancied crumpets with marmite rather then the offered jam, was told this was fine. The crumpets came with a generous serving of marmite in a little bowl. This was a great find and having never been a fan of Dorchester improved my opinions if the town (finding the park also helped improve my opinion of the town) .
