Everest Gurkha Chef in North Devon

I always order my Indian/Nepalese takeaway food here and usually the best in the whole of the Sourh West! Not your usual Bangladeshi food disguised as Indian dishes. I am a foodie frequent Brilliiance in Southall, London and I know Indian/Nepalese food very well indeed. The food is nearly always exceptional here but every now and an again it goes abit off the rails. It’s a shame really this restaurant is one of the best I have ever been to and an absolute brilliant place and our door step. The sheek kebabs are like the ones you get in India and Nepal and street food hand made ones. Except we got frozen ones this time you could tell dry freezer burn as fresh are always moist. It’s a shame it slips sometime and we always love fresh chillies over hot red chilli powder, next time I won’t order over the phone but go on with chillies in my pocket so we can have fresh chillies. But still it’s better than any other Indian/Nepalese Restaurant in the whole of the South West of England, what a find here in Barnstaple, North Devon. Chilli Paneer will blow you mind spongy paneer how it’s meant to be cooked, absolutely brilliant dish reminds my wife proper Indian food like mother used to cook. Still the best place to go on the South West of England by far we have tried everywhere and Everest Ghutka is ok our doorstep what a blessing to have.

2 friends and myself visited this little restaurant September just gone(apologies for late posting) We all shared a plate of popadoms with the various pickles. We then had 3 mains with naan breads, I opted for the chicken sagwala which was excellent. All 3 mains were devoured with gusto, the food was piping hot and extremely tasty. The Everest Gurka is now my go to place for a curry..

Once again we had had a wonderful meal and experience in this lovely little restaurant. The takeaways are great but you have to experience the atmosphere of the restaurant. A warm welcome awaits and always end up talking to the other guests, comparing the meals. Milan, the owner really works hard to produce such lovely meals, and not forgetting the lovely front of house. I really recommend you try a meal and as the restaurant isn’t licensed don’t forget to get your booze in the Tesco Extra which is very close by which makes the meal much cheaper. Wow ! The food and service is fabulous. The choice of Nepali food is amazing all of the ones we have ever tried have the best flavours. We keep retuning here as the quality is so good. Highly recommended

An absolute gem this one, stumbled in here on a visit to Barnstapleand had the Himalayan lamb. It’s unassuming from the outside but it was awesomeone of the nicest curries I’ve ever tasted. Definitely recommend

The people were really friendly the food was perfection they let someone on are table bring there own food in as they didn’t like that sort of food and they let us take are leftovers home I would recommend this place if you like Indian.

Sparkling water barely sparkling. Small special rice very overpriced at £5.49 grams Ben the modest surroundings. Staff nice but far too many items on the menu to have them all freshly made.

Absolutely faultless! Have lived in Devon for 28 years and was blown away! Certainly the best we have had. From perfectly cooked meats and veg and delicious sauces to exemplary service. We just stopped in for a takeaway but will be Certainly returning to dine in the restaurant. Thank you

First visit after a couple of years away and we remembered just how great this little restaurant is. Food was delicious - especially chilli paneer. Beautifully cooked garlic naan. Generous portions and great value for money. Spice levels are just right and adjusted to individual preferences. Service was very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Our second visit here (we actually live near Oxford!) AMAZING food and just the very best 'Indian' we have ever had. Booking essentail unless there very early (5.30/6pm) and eating quickly. No license so take your own tipple - but JUST GO! Such a wonderful experience with authentic food freshly prepared in an open itchen.

Disappointed although everything was nicely presented the Tandoori chicken was a let down bland with no real Tandoori flavour.the lamb in the curry was dry & chewy.

We are regulars at this brilliant authentic Nepalese restaurant. I’m quite reserved myself, yet the owner always puts us at ease. How does he remember everyone?. My daughter doesn’t even need to order! I went to Nepal on a silly Everest trek in Feb, and my family visited here while I was away. He knows, he asked me about it, he is brilliant! OK now the food. The lamb Choela starter is unbelievable. Probably my fav international dish, and I’ve been around! Every main dish is also fantastic. By far my favourite casual, relaxed and incredibly well priced for the quality of food restaurant … and hell it’s in the centre of the otherwise culinary barren North Devon town of Barnstaple. The place is outstanding.

Right, listen. This place is genuinely the best place I’ve been to for sheer flavour and freshness of food. The staff are great, very hard working! We travel from Bristol to Barnstaple just to eat here, our 4th visit this year. Try it!

Very bland did not smell or taste like a Indian meal, So disappointed

The food was simply amazing, one of the best curries I've ever had and, trust me, I've had a lot of curries. It's very small for a restaurant so you'll be lucky to just turn up and get a table and you'll need to take your own booze if you're planning on having a drink but soft drinks are available. I feel sad that I only ate here once during my four days working in the area, I'll definitely come back.

In Bideford for a few days but dire reviews for the three curry places in town, so took a bus into Barnstable to try this place on the strength of comments here. REALLY glad I did! One of the best meals I've had in ages, lovely flavour, decent portion size and piping hot. On a cold February Tuesday night most of the other local restaurants looked pretty empty but every table here was full, mostly with people who seemed to come regularly and know the owner - always a good sign. Not the cheapest place, but certainly great value - thoroughly recommended and will return if I'm in the area again.

Very nice food, place was a bit draughty so if you're going during winter make sure you layer up. Sadly no alcohol license so you'll need to bring your own Cobra.

I was with a group of seven and we all enjoyed our food. Every dish was distinctive, even the naan was delicious. The service was excellent and the smells from the kitchen were mouth watering. Sorry no photos of the food but it was delicious, well presented and fairly priced. Highly recommended!

The flavours were amazing, really good quality, it has an open kitchen where you can see your meal being cooked, its a shame they don't have delivery service, eat in or take out only.

Really good food cooked by someone who is passionate about what they do. Slightly odd feeling taking my own beer into a restaurant but it added to the atmosphere (soft drinks are available). I will be going back at some point.

I’ll start this review by saying how much I used to enjoy going to this place. The food, the atmosphere, service and prices were great. However, some of this has now changed… I attended a family meal of which there were 13 of us. Due to the numbers we all had to pre-order our food and pay a £10 deposit person, which is understandable. We all arrived at the time we booked and were placed on a table where we were all bunched and squashed together. When a table adjacent became free, we enquired if some of us could move to it, to which we were told no. This table was then empty for the entire time we were there. Our food began to arrive quite quickly. However, instead of serving people’s s curry dishes and rice and other sundries together, some people had their rice served first and then had to wait 20mins for their curry to arrive. Some people also had this the other way where the curry was served and then had to wait a lengthy time for the rice etc. Either way, one part of your food was guaranteed to be cold! If you were lucky for you food to turn up cold, spare a thought for the people who were told that they had now run out of some their food, so they could not now have it. I thought the fact that we had to pre-order would guarantee that we would have what we ordered, does it not??? Now, normally this is a great little place where you can take in your own drink, they’ll supply some glasses and some water too. Not everyone took or had a drink that night, yet come the end of the night the owner had decided to charge everyone corkage regardless of the fact that had a drink or not. When this was contested, the owner started to become aggressive towards some of us. The rip-off tactics didn’t stop there. Even though we had all paid the deposit, the owner conveniently seemed to forget this and tried to charge us all the full price and not deducting the deposits. His anger continued and tried to make out that this was all our fault and that we should have ordered and paid differently?! So, there we have a it. What was supposed to be a lovely family evening was ruined by a greedy and hostile little man. There was a time that I used to recommend this place to everyone I knew. Unfortunately, now it is the complete opposite, and I will never go in there again.

First visit to Everest Gurkha Chef, certainly won’t be the last! Don’t be fooled by the Formica tables, this place serves absolutely amazing food. Staff were really pleasant too. You won’t be disappointed!

Fabulous food again here at the Gurkha. The Chicken San sari and the Jalfrezi were divine. Thanks to Milan and his staff for beautiful food and a lovely evening. We will be back!

Fantastic, reasonably priced curry. Basic restaurant which added charm...very clean. Very friendly staff who were very accommodating considering the carnage of the empties left by 20 men's BYO! Highly recommended.

I come from Birmingham where we are spoilt for choice for amazing curry houses. I've been disappointed by Devon in comparison, until I found this amazing place! The everest special was the nicest curry I've had in years. Awesome service too.

Okay order via. “Just Eat” and delivered on time … but small, small portions and no ‘extras’ supplied, so poor choice compared to other Barnstaple curry restaurants. The ‘mushroom Bhaji was bizarre! It was just a pot of plain fried mushrooms - no flavourings at all (whats that about?!) Even though we spent £40 there were no free poppadoms, also no free yogurt sauce with the chicken tikka main (£10!) … So, we felt it was quite mean all round actually!

7 of us ate here and all had different choices all of which were delicious . We all chose dishes with a Nepalese origin and they were very interesting . Expect large portions and to be offered how hot you want the dishes . Everything was beautifully cooked and served very promptly . It’s very small but we were fitted in comfortably . You need to bring your own alcohol . All the staff were very friendly and it was a very good experience

Probably rates amongst one of the worst meals we've had. We are great fans of Nepalese food which makes it worse. We ordered lamb momos and the Everest Mixed Grill Sizzler. The momos were badly unfrozen as the dumpling was falling apart and the filling was tasteless as was the dipping sauce. For the Everest Grill suffice to say that several lumps of overcooked meat on a bed of burnt onion should never cost 14.99. To top it all, a half an hour wait and continual bickering coming from the kitchen

Great food and first class customer service make eating here a tasty treat. The people of Barnstaple are lucky to have this gem on their doorsteps - it’s even on Just Eat. The dishes and flavours are authentic Nepalese and took us back to a holiday we had in Nepal pre Covid. The Chefs Specials are very good indeed we tried two of them - can’t remember the names but one was first on the specials menu and the second was last in the list.

Have had both take away and eaten in and both times it was really lovely food very authentic and such a friendly atmosphere. Will definitely be coming back.

This is the best takeaway in Barnstaple amazing food the chili chicken is a must! If you have not tried this takeaway then you are missing out! When the restaurant was open to sit in we ate there often bring your own drink and enjoy seeing your meal being cooked fresh its like being in your own front room! May they forever stay open and we look forward to eating in the restaurant when all this craziness is over!

I’ve been coming here for years and I can easily say it’s the best curry in town. Sampled many dishes, all very different to taste. BYOB if your sitting in. Open kitchen. Smiley staff. Quick take away.

Good curry at alright prices. We paid over the phone and they said they’d ring us within the hour when it was ready. Thought that was a bit odd but either way, they didn’t ring so we went to collect after an hour waiting.

We've been here on numerous occassions over the last few years and is one of our favourite destinations for food. Lovely couple Romi and Milan cooking away in the background never fail to please with outstanding Nepalese food. The Momos are superb and to be fair so is everything else.Bring your own Alcoholic drinks with a very small corkage charge to pay for the disposal of bottles etc and the cleaning of glasses provided.One of the last times there we squeezed up on the same table as Drew Pritchard from Salvage Hunter who was in Barnstaple filming.A friendly welcome always and a fat belly to go with it too.Just Lovely.

Visiting Barnstaple, found this little place which looked more like a takeaway than a restaurant. So pleased we went in. Delicious Nepalese cuisine, prepared and cooked in the same room, with just a counter between the kitchen and tables. If you’ve not had Nepalese before, the Everest specials use authentic Nepalese spice mixes - very tasty.

The food here is wonderful. The layer upon layer of flavour in the dishes is truly amazing. I would recommend eating in so you can get the food fresh off the grill/pan. They also have a BYOB policy with a very small corkage fee. The owners are very friendly, and they employ some very polite and attentive waiters and waitresses.

Had a lovely evening here , The food was 100%. The two young female waitresses weren’t up to much, They did not greet us on arrival and found them to uninterested in their job, They not check on us and presented us with the bill after we had eaten without asking if we wanted coffees etc ,

My Cricket Team were looking for somewhere to celebrate a great season so we decided on Everest Gurkha Chef and I am so glad we did. On arrival we were greeted by a Young Lady who showed us to our seats. As there were 10 of us we were asked to pre order our meal as everything is freshly cooked this was not a problem. Within 10 minutes the Poppadoms had arrived along with a dish of mixed toppings ..very nice. Our starters were not far behind which were hot and very tasty. The main meals came after along with a mixture of Naan breads and Pilau rice all piping hot. Everyone agreed that the meals that they had were really Flavoursome. As the Restaurant is not licensed you have to take your own alcohol but they do sell soft drinks. All Staff were very friendly and with it only being a small restaurant you didnt feel rushed. Thank you for great food I for one shall be returning

My husband and I went for dinner after the cinema, we booked for 7.45pm when we arrived our table was not ready which was not a problem. We did not wait long less than 5 minutes but staff apologise, we was shown to our table, we ordered drinks and looked at the menu.Menu is well laid out ,explaining what was in each dish and at the side how hot that particular dish was. We both had popadoms with a dip, we order momo very delicious. My husband had mushroom rice with lamb sherpa which he enjoyed I had special vegetables rice with swadaillo chicken also very enjoyable. I couldn't eat all mine as I was full, definitely would go again all stall lovely, attentive and always wanting to please Thank you for a delicious meal

Four of us enjoyed choices from the Nepalese section of the menu after some more traditional Indian starters, but there are also traditional Indian mains to choose from as well. Service is always with a smile, I often eat here when on business, but it was great to enjoy with friends on this occasion.

The three of us were hungry after a long work day and fancied something other than another chain restaurant. Following the reviews we were impressed with the food from start to finish! Momos were amazing and came out quicker than the 25 minutes we were warned. Obviously with pompadoms to keep us going! I had the Himalayan chicken curry which was really flavoursome and perfect heat for me as I requested hot! Can’t recommend enough!

Planned to go here with my partner on a Monday night, trip advisor review read good. Clicked link to their website which was a Facebook page that said they were open Monday’s. Arrived to find it closed... please update your information... very disappointed.
