Espresso Black in East Lothian

Excellent place for coffee and a catch up. Good place to meet friends and family. Friendly staff and customers Thoroughly recommend it.

I want to do a quick shout to one of my favourite cafés, Espresso Black in Dunbar. We love strolling along the beaches from the west and making Dunbar our turn around point and Espresso Black our café destination. Stunning views of the Bas Rock, golden sands …. and a good cup of coffee. The Flat Whites are consistently good. A nice balance of coffee and milk, just as a good Flat White should be, and a firm foam head. The espresso isn’t too harsh nor bitter. We normally buy a bag of 3 mini cinnamon rolls (£1.50). I love these swirls so much that I sometimes end up buying 3 or 4 bags. The cake/bread is moist like a brioche and there is a pleasant amount of cinnamon. So many cinnamon rolls only have the thinnest, barest amount of cinnamon which doesn’t even offer a hint of flavour. But Espresso Black’s tick the boxes. Because of Covid, the café can’t seat people inside although there are some seats on the pavement (sadly they don’t get the morning sun). You can head around the corner, past the swimming pool (less than 5 minute stroll), there are some benches which allow you a view across to the Bas Rock and beyond.

A short, flying first visit which impressed all in our group as the two staff were very friendly, chatty and would make us return if we lived locally. The three drinks were geat tasting and served with humour and integrity. Parking on street would make this a regular stop if I lived locally.

Не знаю увидят ли владельцы данного заведения мой отзыв или нет, но все же буду надеяться что прочтут. Заведение на твердую пятерку, как по обсаживанию, так и по самой еде и подаче еде. Внутри красиво, уютно, хорошо, я не знаю лучше заведения в городе чем это. Единственный минус для меня и моей супруги, так это отсутствие некоторых блюд в меню Иногда хочется пиццу "Луизиана" которую это заведение не делает, но делает соседнее, а также хочется суши "Хаши" которое также отсутствует, при этом рядом в заведении, которое сейчас по кухне скатилось в никуда, присутствует. Очень хотелось бы обратится к владельцам, расширить меню, тогда мы окончательно будем довольны! Спасибо.

Without a doubt THE best coffee in town - sorry opposition, but you don`t come close! The staff are very friendly and efficient, and the customers are extremely congenial - if there`s only one spare seat no-one minds you joining them. Dog friendly too! (as long as you keep them on a lead!). I try to visit as often as I can manage, usually 2-3 times a week. They only offer cakes and the like to eat, and are all about the coffee. If you want a meal or a sandwich look elsewhere. If you want great coffee stop here!

Local told us this was the best coffee in town. Can’t confirm as didn’t try anywhere else after good. Coffee is very good.

Amazing Americano, got and strong. Also try the chic chip shortbread also amazing. Great service good prices, highly recommended

This small coffee shop does a very good flat white .The skills at frothing the milk are second to none and you get a proper microfoam instead of just hot or frothy milk .Also they get the proportions of the coffee just right. The blend of coffee they currently use is a wee bit on the bitter side for my taste but still very good .I do wish they had different seating though as high bar stools aren’t easy to get on and off .

Went here many times with my sister for coffee and cookies. I absolutely loved the Biscotti and the coffee was made to perfection. Lovely clean little cafe. The young lady who served us was very nice, warm and friendly.

This is my local and regular coffee shop. Love the coffee and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. Would never go anywhere else for my lattes. If it wasn’t for Espresso Black I’d be lost without my coffee. If I could give them more than five stars I would. Highly recommend.

I bought coffee and cake (served by a very sweet and polite staff member) but when I asked for water I was told I had to pay for it. The owner's policy is to refuse drinking water - instead suggests a customer pays for it. I then noticed lots of bossy (hostile) notices everywhere. I have never been refused drinking water anywhere in the UK before. Totally shocking and incredibly inhospitable behaviour. If you want a relaxing coffee then avoid.

This little cafe is very welcoming. Nice and warm on the cold day when we visited and it greets you with a wonderful aroma of coffee. As with all such cafes serving good coffee, it takes a while to produce the coffee so if there is a queue you'll have to be patient. The wait is well worth it for the coffee and cakes are all top quality. Coffee comes in two different size cups. There are only a few tables inside, some with high stools which were very comfortable. We were lucky to get a table. There are tables outside but it was too cold for sitting outside. If you do sit outside you have to buy takeaway coffee. Although specialising in coffee, they also seem to have an amazing collection of teas and they also serve hot chocolate. The cafe is attractive with one wall having displays of different coffees. If you are in Dunbar and appreciate good coffee, I do strongly recommend you try this little cafe.

Coffee just as you would like it ~ cafe is warm and welcoming and the smell of coffee ~ well that's all it takes.

Best coffee in this area. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Well used by locals who were also friendly. Small but worth visiting for a caffeine kick!

My husband and I love to visit here for a coffee and hot chocolate. There's very high tables that take a bit of climbing up to so not great for disabled people. My husband who takes his coffee black, tells me it's rich and tasty. I go for the hot chocolate with all the trimmings. It's delicious. Nice little place but I would like lower tables as I always feel like a toddler climbing onto an adult size chair

Great place, great host and best Coffee in Scotland. Nothing is taken for granted when you get served coffee here pure magic.

Great coffee. Done exactly the way you want it. Lovely staff. Only downside is high seating but sit outside looking over the harbour if an issue....

Very small but excellent wee coffee shop on the High Street, it closes FAR too early in the afternoon (4pm) . Struggled to get served at ten to four as the girl was in a hurry to get home . Worth going earlier in the day as the coffee is top class.

Popped in with a friend for coffee and chocolate granola bars. Coffee was excellent and pthe best we had tasted in Dunbar. The granola bars were very good and enjoyed by all three of us.

Realmente disfrutamos el café aquí, pequeño café amigable con un tentador surtido de pasteles, magdalenas y una buena selección de cafés y tés. Siendo una pequeña preocupación hay un verdadero orgullo en el café.

Espresso Black is a small café with homelike furniture. They serve a surprisingly good espresso, the best I ever tasted in the UK!

I always visit this place when I'm in Dunbar, the coffee is amazing and there is a great selection of teas. Service is always excellent.

Delivering to Dunbar from work and was feeling properly tired and was on the look out for a greggs, mainly because there seems to be one everywhere, thankfully there wasn't one and I found this place. Inside it's immaculate and has a large choice of coffee beans, sweet treats, savoury nibbles and of course the coffee. Cheaper than a Starbucks and friendly as family!If you are in Dunbar and you want a coffee go here....it's lovely!

I go here whenever i can and am never disappointed. The coffee is simply delicious and the service always speedy and friendly.

Had a take away coffee from there today. Lovely coffee. Reasonable prices and a nice wee place, couple of tables inside and a bench at the front door. We took our purchases away and sat near the sea. Very enjoyable.

Dropped in this Coffee bar for a quick cup of Coffee, and was totally amazed by the customer service and the types of Coffee served, would totally recomend this place

My granny (a local) comes here almost every other day with her friends to sit and enjoy a latte. She absolutely love this place and Stuart Carr is such a kind man that works there! He was very attuned to my granny's needs and made sure both of us were well taken care of during our coffee trip. This is a beautiful coffee shop and the aromas are amazing in here! Prices were also very good and quality is even better!Pictured is my hot chocolate I bought along with the menu! Will definitely visit here again before I leave the country!

Although it can get crowded late morning expresso black produces best coffee in Dunbar and is certainly one of the best in East of Scotland

Espresso Black does great coffee ,made by an experienced Barista!! named Stewartwith whom Ive had many a chat with on a cold rainy day, just ask how you like it and its never too much trouble

Sheltering from the rain I popped in for a coffee. Very friendly little cafe, very popular with the locals, I could see why. The waitress was delightful and good at her job. The espresso was perfect. Atmosphere was jolly. Of the 3 coffee houses in Dunbar I visited, this was by far the best.

Serves a great selection of hot drinks but the quality is amazing. Friendly and very experienced staff get it right every time.

Got what I asked for, in good time. Friendly and chatty. Good coffee! Whilst we were there someone popped in to pick up a button hole for a wedding ... "Oh yes, it's in the fridge at home to keep it fresh. Wait a couple of minutes and I'll go and fetch it." Which she did .. service above and beyond!

A small kindly coffee shop with a few tables where you’ll be lucky to get a seat on a busy day. Coffee wise, I’ve had several different types and all have been piping hot and tasty and served to perfection.A small selection of cakes and biscuits are available, they are perhaps homemade, difficult to say. Only one thing missing, a public toilet would be great to have after a large coffee.There is plenty of foot traffic in and out, with plenty of order to go.

My friends and I were visiting Dunbar and were having difficulty finding anywhere open on a Sunday for a coffee. We spotted Cafe Espresso and were delighted with crafted coffees and fresh cakes and nibbles. Shop also retails good selection of coffee, coffee machines, biscuits etc

Excellent coffee shop, reasonably priced and very friendly staff. The shop is a great place to sit to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while watching the world go by through the window. Definitely recommend.

Many coffee shops have lost their focus - becoming cafes with food a major focus and the coffee almost forgotten about (and often not very good). Espresso Black majors on coffee and does it really well. A short coffee menu and a very small selection of biscotti/shortbread for those who like to nibble with their coffee.I had a cappuccino. The foam wasn't was very tight and stayed intact, the coffee was aromatic and there was the right quantity of milk for a cappuccino rather than the coffee being masked by too much.Inside it's quite small with 3 tables and a counter to sit at. Espresso black also sells coffee/tea loose and the paraphernalia needed to make it at home. They even offer lessons! I'd guess it's quite a new business and with coffee this good I'm sure they will have a lot of repeat business, including mine.
