Delicious food as always here at Ellie’s. The restaurant is always comfortable and with beautiful surroundings but at the moment with the Christmas Decorations it looks absolutely magical. Service was great, very attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend dining here.

I attended with a friend and had a mixed experience. It wasn’t a good start with two rolls on one plate placed in front of us without any explanation. As I am Gluten intolerant I had notified the restaurant on the booking. The rolls did NOT look gluten free and I was about to question it when I noted staff mentioning it to the waiter. They swiftly took it away and returned two rolls again ( one gluten free) on the same plate! Thankfully I’m Not celiac as cross contamination issues there straight away! The starter was tweaked and was nice but mains came with over cooked pork and chips that were actually burnt on the sides. Shocking for any restaurant let alone one that boasts of awards. It was lunch with a friend so I didn’t complain and hope the restaurant takes this as intended which is constructive feedback …think allergy the minute the guest enters the restaurant, it’s standard in Majority to check before taking orders and certainly to be aware shared plates with gluten and non gluten is a big no! And a big no to burnt chips.

We went to 'Greek Night' on the 24th February, and I paid to take my Mum, Nan and Sister and it was nothing short of awful. Considering this is meant to be a prestigious venue, and 4 stars I would be mortified if I had a wedding or event here. Staff were incredibly rude to the 3 parties that made up the table we were on, and rude to my elderly Nan and myself. I contacted them directly to complain to which they took next to no accountability. I think they were happy to take your money, as it had to be paid for a month in advance, but assumed if you were under the influence of alcohol (which we were not) that they could speak to you however they like, and not have to do their job. They wouldn't clear our table after more than one of us asking. They served dried and crusty food, luke warm mains at best and we didn't even receive our dessert despite requesting to take it home. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who would consider going for an event, let alone paying thousands to host your wedding there. I think it is one thing to be rude to someone who's paying for your service, but it is just completely disrespectful to be rude to the elderly. ( She only wanted her dinner warmed up!)

Spent a lovely day at Greenwoods and had a beautiful room in the hotel, ate in their restaurant Ellis’s for our evening meal and breakfast. Service was perfect, lovely waitress who was both friendly and professional. We both ordered the rib eye steak that was charcoal grilled to perfection, up there as one of the top ten steaks I have eaten, great chunky chips ( could have been a bit more golden for perfection) the extra green salad we ordered was fresh and delicious, nice extra avocado and pomegranate. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce on the side, meringue crumbs added a lovely texture, again absolutely delicious. Definitely recommend.

Went on a midweek visit to this restaurant using a voucher we got fir Christmas last year. The restaurant itself had a few people in but lacked atmosphere. Served promptly & waitress was very pleasant. First course arrived which was confit belly pork with scallops. Unfortunately the pork & scallops were cold & there was no crispy skin on the pork so it wasn't a pleasant eat. This was an extra £3 supplement for this dish. We did bring it to the attention of the waitress who said she'd tell the chef. At the end of the evening the supplement was still added to the bill so we asked for it to be taken off. On a positive note both mains were lovely & the chocolate fondant dessert was the best I'd ever had. I feel this restaurant just needs an injection of personality,so not sure we'd return.

Restaurant looked nice - well decorated. Menu was small but everything sounded good. Just opted for mains as it was lunch and we weren’t that hungry. The waitress although nice, couldn’t speak much English and couldn’t understand when we were trying to order and had to get someone else to help her, she also kept coming over and tbh she was cute at first but became quite irritating in the end. The food although nice wasn’t anything to write home about which was a shame as I remember the last time I came here about 8y ago the food was amazing. Won’t be hurrying back anytime soon

Firstly I’ll start by saying the food was really delicious, both dinner and breakfast! However the service…I don’t even know where to start! We were seated at 7:30 - it took maybe 20 minutes for a waitress to even come to us to check if we wanted a drink and take our order (I had to wave her down may I add) Anyway the starter came 20 minutes later which is fine, following on from this…quite a long time later a waitress bought us the wrong meal. She told us she would go and check but never came back to us to let us know what had happened. So much time had passed and not one sign of a waitress with our food or asking if we wanted another drink. So I went to try and find someone - not one waitress was present in the entire restaurant! So I went out to the bar and asked that lady to see what was happening. Shortly after our meals appeared. At this point it was nearly 9pm. Like I said, the food was delicious! We finished our meal and once again…not one waitress to be found! By this point it was maybe 9:40! So went to find the same lady at the bar again who sent someone out right away! But by the time we were eating that it was basically 10pm which is totally unacceptable considering we were sat at 7:30! We complained to the manager who was very apologetic and we didn’t have to pay for drinks or supplements for the meal! To add to this, there was dirty plates left for our entire meal service on the table next door, encouraging flies etc, it just wasn’t what you’d expect from an upmarket restaurant! I thought breakfast the next morning would be better service wise…it was not! Again left without waitresses for ages! They didn’t bring our toast, offer any sauces! The restaurant food itself is wonderful but the staff need some EXTRME training on customer service!!

We used a ‘buy a gift’ voucher for a three course meal. We arrived at the restaurant and had to wait for someone to seat us as no one was around the restaurant and this was the theme throughout the night. Having to find someone or trying to catch someone’s attention. Seeing other people being brought drinks when they had placed their orders after ours. It was really poor service. For the main I ordered the lamb and my husband had the fillet. Both cuts were particularly fatty and seemed like the end of meat cut. It was very disappointing, but the rest of the dish was flavoursome. The best part was the dessert where I ordered the fondant which was cooked perfectly and the reason why it wasn’t a one star, but two. Overall, I’ve had better meals at other places in Essex and wouldn’t return again.

My partner bought me the "spa day for her" with lunch at Greenwood's on 22-03-19. I went with my mother and sister in law. Had lovely treatments, especially the facial with head massage! Had lunch at the hotel restaurant but could only have 1 course in between pre-booked treatments, as it took an hour to have the first course. I was told I could go back and have dessert later which was fine. After leaving the spa around 6pm I started to feel off, then queasy then spent the rest of the evening/night vomiting and having diarrhoea. I couldn't get out of bed the next day, and a week later so had a delicate stomach. So lovely as the spa day was, it was all undone by being given food poisoning, and being left feeling like I'd been beaten up. I have emailed Greenwood's twice to tell them of my experience but have had no response from them.

Have been coming to Greenwood’s for 10 years and after a mixed experience in November 2018 , my daughter and I visited yesterday for lunch and use of the spa. This was a complimentary visit ,which was very much appreciated by both of us . The restaurant and reception staff gave us a warm welcome , lunch was wonderful and we felt that we were well looked after .My daughter is 8 months pregnant, so the spa day came at a great time and enabled her to relax around the swimming pool on one of the sun beds , enjoying the peace and tranquillity. We had no trouble finding a bed this time , which was a problem before and thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon.Thank you for looking after us , we will be returning for our annual visit in December for my daughter’s birthday I would like to also mention , Greenwood’s have exceeded my expectations in the way my feedback from November was taken on board and I have had personal ongoing contact with the Operations Manager arranging this visit , thank you again.

Food and wine was fine. Service below what I’d expect for the price tag involved which I put down to poor training by the management. They’ve crammed so many tables in the restaurant that all diners are literally sitting centimetres for each other. So don’t expect to have a private conversation at this place. I thought I could share with you my recent Spa Day experience... For those of you who prefer to have a quicker feedback, scroll directly down to the "points in a nutshell". For the rest of you, I hope you will enjoy reading about it..I received a spa day voucher (back massage 20min/facial 50min/manicure 35min) including a 2 course meal as a Mother's day gift (I am spoiled by my big man and my little man!). Living in Billericay, I always wanted to check how lovely the Greenwoods Hotel & Spa is... Locally we don't have many 4 stars places with luxury Spas. On the website, it looked a-ma-zing, with stunning grounds and facilities, I really was excited by my present!!! First of first, I "tried" to reclaim my voucher with reception staff. I called and the only thing the girl asked is the voucher number and e-mail details. I asked if that was it, she said yes, you will receive the info via e-mail. 24h later, I thought, no e-mails, I better check with them.... This time I e-mailed. Received a reply later asking me for my name. Found me in the system but said e-mail address was wrongly spelled on their end. Got it re-sent and received it this time. As I didn’t want to use the pool, just do lunch and treatments, I asked Billie via e-mail how would it work. To this I didn’t receive a clear response, only this “With regards to inclusive treatments these will be booked in for you during your day. Treatment times start from 10am and finish at 7pm. Should you have an am or pm request we can put this on your booking for you” That was three days before my “fun day”.. Eventually received another e-mail and another one and a final one asking me for a reservation number?.... I sent whatever booking references I had and was expecting someone to liaise with me with clear information…. In vain!.. Next day, I turned up for 11.45am.On arrival the beauty of this Grade II listed manor house didn't disappoint, same for the grounds and garden! Once I made contact with reception, I advised the girl there I was there for my Spa Day. She replied “for the Spa day, Spa is in that direction” I apologised and said, could you check how does it work with the restaurant, I have it booked within my Spa Day. She replied yes of course, what is my name. Gave me the hotel card and showed me the restaurant direction. At the restaurant, I was greeted - I suppose - by the duty manager. He took me to the front windows area of the restaurant, which was a lovely thing to do as I was after some peace and quiet time to relax. Main part of the restaurant was getting very busy. I looked at the menu and thought the selection of meals was quite limited but found something interesting eventually. I decided to go with the Greenwoods house salad and the Pan Fried Chalk Stream Trout with baby vegetables, Charlotte potatoes and lobster bisque as a main.In the meantime, a lovely waitress served me sparkling water and some bread with herbs on top, which looked like unfrozen to me (but was it?) Started arrived: presentation was simple but attractive. All I can see is salad leaves (out of a salad bag?) sprinkled with Stilton cheese, pine nuts, little prawns, 3 or 4 pieces of poached pears and the herbs croutons that seemed to be the same bread I was served with my butter!.. Being French, bread is super important to me. This time I left a half of the bread go back to the kitchen when asked if I wanted to keep it. No thank you. Salad was OK. The overall flavours were somehow lost because of the heavy Modena vinegar reduced sauce… Too much of it for me!..Arrived the main dish. Presented relatively nicely so I thought, excellent start! Fish and greens were already medium hot whereas the boiled Charlotte potatoes were piping hot… Yes I burnt my tongue which added to my little drama... I was so looking forward to the lobster bisque! To be absolutely disappointed… It was a sort of tomato (and maybe peppers?) sauce… Funnily enough that was the soup of the day today. Absolutely no taste of lobster to me.. Did I say anything? Not really... I thought to myself, for £17.95 two course meal, what could I expect? We pay £22.50 for a two course meal at the Grove for example and it is outstanding. The Greenwoods can only improve.. Especially since it received his AA Rosette (I was expecting better because of that award! Yes I was!!!)Being a little bit fed up with a slow and disinterested service, I thought I won’t risk the desert but I needed my double espresso. It arrived promptly. Watery and no crema foam on top. I sent it back. The girl came back with a new one, apologetic indeed. This time there was some crema on top but the effect of the coffee was still watery. I asked for the bill – discovered the double espresso was charged £4.50… Had a nervous laugh as this is what the Grove or the Ham Yard charges (+45p) but sorry, the quality wasn’t there at all. Asked for the bill, signed it and left full of hope to have a nice treatment. Went down to the Spa area to find two very nice girls, very welcoming. I explained I have been booked for 3pm treatments then 5 and 6 but no one at reception understood I didn’t want to use the pool and want the treatments done ASAP. The blonde girl was very helpful and amended the treatments for 2PM with the same Spa specialist. It was 1.40PM and I only had to wait for 20 min now which was a relief. The young Dani welcomed me and explained to me in detail how will she proceed with treatments. She started with the back massage, continued with luxury facial (amazing with that special mask!) Manicure was fine but felt a bit rushed. Not the girl's fault, blame it on the overall organisation/booking, really... Some of the equipment looks a bit dated and the ventilator for the nails was only working on one side (that’s handy right when you have both hands done ha!) The nails room is very clinical and dirty with coffee marks. However, all in all, the SPA experience was good. I felt relaxed and forget how annoyed I was with the first part at the restaurant!!! As I was driving home, I thought to myself. That place is a FOUR STARS hotel and spa venue with an AA Rosette restaurant.…. So much potential yet not fully realised!!! Oh non! In a nutshell, my views of my Spa day at the Greenwoods! Positive points The beauty of this Grade II listed manor house, its terrace and gardens The interiors of the lobby, bar and staircase Spa personal and treatments Points that need improvement... Receptionists, close to be a disaster, staff really needs training! Food, coffee and service at the restaurant How dirty the nails room is Being told the hotel used to be a mental health hospital in the past (how lovely and relaxing, right?)And so now, the important question. Would I go back there? Of course! To see if/where improvements have been made (or not!) and because everyone deserves a second chance in life, non?

The tea sandwiches and scones were perfect but we thought the cake selection could have been better for example the fairy cake had a very artificial buttercream taste. I booked a spa break for my husbands Christmas present and we went on the 23rd December. It was very quiet in the restaurant with no more than 5 couples dining. I've previously eaten here when I stayed in the summer with a friend and thought the restaurant was fab and was telling my husband all about the chicken dish on the main menu which had a creamy leek and pancetta sauce. We were both looking forward to it. After we'd eaten our starters we were asked if we wanted some time or go straight to the mains. We had waited about 25 minutes for starters so asked for the main straight away....we waited another 20/25 minutes. When it was served there was no explanation offered about the dish put in front of us so I said to my husband we best check with the waiter as the dish was just a chicken breast with a soy sauce tasting sauce and I wondered if we had another diners meal...my husband asked the waiter who said no this is yours and I said but there's no leek or pancetta sauce,...the waiter said pancetta? Then went to check it was actually in the menu....he then came back and said the chef had forgotten the sauce and if we could wait ten minutes we could have it? We said no we didn't want our dinner getting cold for ten minutes! We are some of our dinner but it wasn't very nice. The waiter came over again and said he'd spoken to the chef who apologised and as a gesture they would like to offer us a free dessert....in front of my husband to whom this was all a gift I had to state that we were on a package deal that included a 3 course meal.....the waitress then came over and said to the waiter that she had sat us on the wrong table and confirmed that contrary to what he believed we were inclusive guests they then walked about 5 steps away from us and debated the error of placing us on the wrong table which we could hear! Later on the waitress told us our chicken dish came without the sauce because the chef was simply too busy.....sorry but having to cook for approximately ten diners is hardly a rush on is it and how rude not to come and ask us if we were happy for a delay so we could have our sauce but just plonk a meal down without any explanation and hope we didn't notice. Not very good service at all. The whole service was so slow! I'd hate to eat here if it was busy you'd wait an eternity! They did agree to rake off the side order of green beans we had (although when we placed that order nobody thought to advise us that our dinner came with these anyway and an order of garlic bread) but it was more the fact that the attitude of he was too bust to care came across that annoyed us both. When we checked out of the hotel we wrote all this on a feedback form and relayed it to the receptionist and was told it would be passed to a manager and we would hear in a few days. Granted Christmas was a few days later but we have heard absolutely nothing. Something that could have been such a minor issue became a bigger one due to it being really poorly handled. We won't be back

My wife and I had Dinner here as part of a spa weekend. We have eaten here before so knew what to expect. We had drinks in the lounge prior to our meal. The lounge is beautifully decorated for Christmas at the moment and gives you a welcoming feeling. The menu is not extensive but the dishes available are cooked to perfection. The staff are very attentive and charming and made our experience more enjoyable. We enjoyed it so much we are coming back in two weeks for our Christmas meal.

Lovely bright, warm and clean restaurant with helpful and friendly staff. Good choice of food on the menu which is served a la cart style and was devoured by both myself and my husband. Excellent choice of breakfast menu too.

Another beautiful meal at the newly renovated Greenwoods Hotel & Spa. Ellis restaurant is stunning. A real gem in the 17th Manor House Hotel. Food - fresh, menu - smart, staff 10/10. The grounds are beautiful and a fantastic wine list. Well done team Greenwoods and Ellis restaurant.

Yesterday my friend and I spent a day at Greenwood's Hotel and Spa and had a couple of treatments. The place itself is beautifully decorated and furnished and the staff upon arrival were helpful, accommodating and welcoming. After a little misunderstanding about the use of bathrobes for afternoon tea, this was quickly resolved and the kind staff arranged for us to take tea in the Spa. They also threw in a glass of Prosecco after the confusion. After such a lovely day and working up an appetite in the pool we decided to stay for dinner at Ellis' restaurant. We were once again not disappointed. The service was exceptional and the food was tasty, well cooked and good quality. Particular mention goes to our waiter Steven who was a joy to be served by. There was nothing too much trouble. As I work in the service industry myself I recognised what a real asset he is in your business. Well done Steven and thank you Greenwood's hotel and Spa!

This restaurant is within Greenwoods hotel and spa but we booked a table for Sunday lunch. Just had a refurb and lovely dining room and the food was superb. Set price for 2 or 3 courses so nice and easy. Nice place for a special meal.

Great looking place from outside all looking very promising, after entering we were guided to a round table for 8 of us, all very nice, clean, great décor, colours great lovely looks promising . Then noticed a very dirty glass in front of me oh dear which i had changed immediately. Once we were handed the menus we were asked for any drinks so proceeded to order drinks and wines etc, after approx. 30mins had passed we were getting very frustrated with no delivery of any drinks or food orders taken. The staff seemed to be preoccupied hovering around one end of the room, on the orders computer most of the time not doing anything else. We saw another person go over to them in the corner and asked if they could have some menus to look at as they had been sat there for some time and nobody had come over to them. We then joined in by asking where our drinks are all in hand sir they will be over shortly. A few more minutes had passed now 40mins and the waiter came back over to check which wine we had ordered, and then came back 5 mins later with the red wine and other drinks we had ordered. It was then he said sorry but they don’t have the white wine we ordered, oh my god so said go to the white wines and just grab anything I’m very thirsty now, also can we have some jugs of tap water for the table to which we were informed they don’t have any jugs left they are all being used elsewhere. Ok so can you fill our glass up then which he was going to do until we said do you have bottled water? . So off he went got the random white wine and a bottle of water for all of us I think we need more than one bottle we said as we all want water Honestly you couldn’t make it up. Then the starters came through all served on big plates with small portions my plate was noticeably covered in fingerprints around the edges and the food was very mediocre .Then when the main course came up I was very disappointed I had fish Bouillabaisse which was not nice very small portion , After we had all eaten we decided to get the bill and go so we could at least get a decent coffee back home upon leaving we overheard another table complaining and saying we don’t blame you but this is very bad etc etc .so a sharp exit was the correct thing to do without looking back. All in all I would not recommend this restaurant the service is diabolical and the food is not worth the price very bad.

I was given a voucher for afternoon tea as a 50th birthday present and was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. Although I had booked in advance by email it, we were not on their list, which made us feel a little uncomfortable. However the staff didn't make an issue of it and we were shown to a table. We were brought a pot of tea (not very hot) and then left for some time. Eventually we were brought sandwiches and cakes but the waiter just put them on the table and turned to leave without saying anything. I mentioned that I was vegetarian and that I had told them this in my booking email and therefore wasn't able to eat the sandwiches which were all on the same plate as the non-vegetarian ones. The waiter did bring some additional sandwiches on another plate but again I felt awkward. We were then left completely unattended until we eventually had to catch the staff's attention to ask for more tea. Not only was the quality of the food no better than average, but also what should have been a luxurious afternoon of feeling special was a real disappointment due to the lack of any attention from the staff. For such a high class establishment I expected WOW and got OK. Shame.

This Punjabi restaurant has a very stylish, comfortable interior. The menu is not hugely extensive but the food is delicious! We really enjoyed our chicken with chillies and chicken with fenugreek. The accompaniments to the poppadoms were tasty too.
