Bridge Street Lounge and Grill in Chelmsford

This Punjabi restaurant has a very stylish, comfortable interior. The menu is not hugely extensive but the food is delicious! We really enjoyed our chicken with chillies and chicken with fenugreek. The accompaniments to the poppadoms were tasty too.

We went here with friends to all meet up. The food was very good and lots of different things on the menu. The food was all of a very high quality and would recommend this restaurant.

This was our first visit and what a superb evening from start to finish!

This was our first visit to Pakwaan since it morphed from its former Bridge Street self.

Pakwaan has taken Indian cuisine to the next level - phenomenal ! The starters - onion bhaji were absolutely delicious - wished we’d ordered two portions (for two). Had the Kaju-Prawns to share as well which were fantastic.The main courses were equally as amazing! All freshly made to order - the chicken moist and succulent. Save room for the deserts, all home made too.We shared the mango sorbet which was awesome, along with the dark chocolate tart and rhubarb which was equally as delicious. One of our party had the Indian Ice cream selection (Kulfi Selection) which we all tried - the rose water ice cream was to die for - could have eaten a whole bowl. Amazing! Well done Raj for your extremely warm and friendly welcome - attentive Staff and amazing Chef and team. Already recommended you and will be back soon.

We had a fantastic meal, our first time visit to Pakwaan and it won’t be our last, Raj and his team are exceptional, who ever the chef is he deserves an applause the food was excellent and the presentation even better, well done guys

A contemporary restaurant with a North Indian menu. The welcome is enthusiastic and it is clear that the owner Raj is passionate about food and service. The menu is large enough to show that the dishes are prepared freshly and not too large as is the case in some Indian restaurants. The vegetarian selection is impressive. The starters we chose (prawns and lamb kebab) were well presented and tasted wonderful. The main courses were great. Lamb bhuna gosht was succulent and well spiced. Although we didn't have them, the lamb thanks looked excellent and it seemed to be a popular dish. This is not a cheap Indian. However the prices reflect the ambiance and the quality of the food. We have eaten here twice (once using the takeaway service) and on both occasions the food has been great. We will definately eat here again.

This is a lovely restaurant. It is North Indian cuisine with a range of vegetarian, fish and meat dishes.

Saturday evening dinner with friends. Waiting staff were attentive & knowledgeable. Varied menu with great vegetarian selection. Food was clearly freshly cooked to order, natural and authentic to the Punjab. Definitely a different class of Indian in a sophisticated atmosphere. Will be returning!

Booked a table at pakwaan on Friday night. The experience was totally excellent from start to finish. The food was tasty. I had a starter of kaju prawns and my partner had Gulafy sheekh. Also my main dish was out of this world. The sevice was excellent, the waitress was friendly and very knowledgeable. Definitely will be back very soon.

We went to Pakwaan last night for a birthday celebration with our children who are in their early twenties. The decor is lovely - contemporary, light and spacious. The tables are well spaced so plenty of atmosphere without feeling crowded. There is an extensive drinks menu which has something to suit all tastes, especially if you don’t want anything alcoholic. The staff are polite and eager to please. Service was fast, although there weren’t that many diners when we were there. An unusual choice of dishes which is refreshing. Our son is a very picky vegetarian and even he found things he wanted to order. Our daughter loves very spicy food and wasn’t disappointed with her choice. We had just returned from 9 days in India and would agree with other reviewers in that the cuisine is authentic. I particularly enjoyed the Kulfi selection for dessert and the Masala tea. We did think it was expensive, which is why I would recommend it for a special occasion.

Amazing night, recommend the Bombay aloo, chicken korma and all of the food. The staff were very polite and attentive the owner is very nice, the mango and passion fruit sorbet was amazing, would definitely come back 100% recommended. Pakwaan under new management Feb 2019, stylish decor, an amazing bar!  We have dined there on a few occasions now. Yesterday, we went there to celebrate my friends birthday, the food was fantastic, extremely high standard of cuisine, coupled with great restaurant atmosphere. Very courteous, engaging staff. A real pleasure. All my friends were very impressed with the restaurant, it was proper Punjabi food. We will return!!! My favourite is the Methi Malai Paneer it's fresh & creamy, simply yummy.

The best of the staff serving awesome food. Don't forget to try Murgh Mirch Masala and Lamb in Mint. The only authentic Indian place in Chelmsford

This is the second time we have visited Pakwaan and we weren't disappointed. The food is slightly different from what you get from other typical Indian restaurants which makes it quite exciting to order. On this occasion we ordered starters, as well as several main courses, and the bill was probably more expensive than we might have envisaged for an Indian meal. Another time we would be a little more circumspect about the quantity of dishes we order The staff are extremely friendly (especially Brenda who is lovely) and the décor and ambience is very convivial to making you feel you have gone out for fine dining. Nice list of cocktails and one of our party was very happy to see a selection of mocktails as she was our designated driver.

Had a wonderful evening, thank you Pakwaan. There is a great choice of authentic dishes and the food was absolutely delicious. The staff were very attentive and friendly.

Visited last night with my best friend. Lovely venue, great atmosphere, excellent service and good food. Korma was spicer than I was expecting but delicious.

If you want to eat truly Indian cuisine in a top class environment with an amazing ambience and fitout then visit Pakawan.

Ate on a Saturday evening having reserved a table the evening before. Fantastic bar and two-for-one cocktails 5pm to 8pm EVERY evening! We skipped starters and opted for Achari Lamb, Salmon in mango, Bindi, Pillau rice and crispy naan. All food was excellent and succelent and service was quick and polite. New owner Raj circulated at all the tables and had great knowledge of the food scene in Chelmsford. This man knows his stuff and his staff. This is proper Indian cuisine at its best and for me washed down with Cobra Indian Pale Ale....a nice option. The May bank holidays weekends will introduce a BBQ for £20 or £30 with 2 drinks. Cannot wait. Pakwaan will be a regular haunt. And maitre d Peter much happier than the previous restaurant incarnation which unfortunately impacts on the new Pakwaan's reviews. Go there!

Our 2nd visit after an incredible gastronomic delight we had during our 1st visit. The tandoori prawn starter was amazing and so was the lamb curry. Overall a thumbs up to all the dishes. The owner was happy to introduce slight tweaks to the dishes depending on level of spiciness we wanted.

Having returned from a delightful lunch at Pakwaan, I can certainly recommend this restaurant. There were 5 people in my group and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch from the 'light lunch' menu, which I believe is a recent addition to their fare. The food was perfectly cooked, with subtle flavours and the meat was 'melt in the mouth'. The desserts are most certainly worth saving a space for and are presented as a work of art.

By far the best Indian I’ve had! Service was top notch and the manager was very helpful and knowledgeable about the dishes. He took the time to go through the menu with us. This restaurant is a great place for a family outing and food! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves Indian food. Loved their ambience and hospitality! Wish them the best of luck.

We visited Pakwann last night and were warmly welcomed upon arrival. We sat at the bar for some time prior to our meal and wasn’t at all rushed. The staff were all very friendly and attentive and gave good advice regarding the food which was delicious. The venue itself is lovely and so spacious - the tables were not crammed next to each other which made it nicer. Overall this is a completely different dining experience and we will most definately return.

The restaurant needs the final touches with metal tables and no table clothes coupled with the temperature being too cold make it feel like you were eating at a rail station.

Food was excellent!, Raj the owner was very welcoming and was really brilliant with our 21 month old son. We was all made to feel very welcome and Raj took the time to come and speak to us and explain the plans of the business. Which also sound great! We can’t wait to go back.

Very impressed with our first visit. We arrived deliberately early to have a couple of drinks and take it all in before dinnner. Lovely bar and whilst it was busy, staff were very friendly taking the time to talk to us whilst preparing drinks. Menu was very different, this is not a curry house. Food was delicious there will be something for everybody, cannot speak highly enough of the staff, very attentive and knowledgeable. Only small point was that we challenged a couple of cordial soft drinks that were overpriced, however, this was quickly rectified. Try it , you won’t be disappointed. We are going again with friends next week.

I don’t normally write reviews but I felt compelled too. We live in the villiage and were hesitant to visit due to the bad reviews we’ve heard..... do not listen to them. The food tasted amazing, the starters looked almost too good to eat. The menu was easy to understand, the waiter recommended 2 meat dishes a veggie and a rice between us, plenty of food and we had starters. It’s not your standard meat in sauce Indian, it felt more like traditional style dishes. Our lamb was melt in the mouth amazing and I’ve never tasted sea bass so good! Not expensive and a big thumbs up from us and we will back for certain. Only slight negative is that the inside decor hasn’t really changed at all but really..... does it matter? I was just excited to see what they done with the place.

I live in the village and never expected food as nice as this. Unlike your typical Indian this was authentic Bengali food freshly cooked. I had the sea bass and loved it. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed it. Lovely friendly service and the waiter patiently explained what the dishes were and even went to find some lime pickle for us which was delicious. It has spoiled us for going to any other Indian restaurant. Will be returning to try some other dishes.

Wow what an amazing find, I looked on trip advisor for an Indian restaurant in the Chelmsford area and saw this new place which is in the old Blue Bridge / Bridge Street Grill. The food is not your usual Bengali food it’s proper Indian food. As you can see from the pictures the decor, food, presentation is excellent. The service is A1 also and I am very hard to please. The guy serving us we found out at the end of the evening through chatting was in fact one of the owners and Peter you made the evening as well as introducing us to Raj his partner who was also a great character. We will be back next week as this restaurant is definitely my new local Indian restaurant.

I had read mixed reviews so I was slightly apprehensive but from the moment we walked in our concerns were diminished - Peter and his staff were very attentive the menu was explained and the staff had good knowledge.

Very friendly greeting, attentive staff. Food served promptly. The most important was the taste. Absolutely excellent. Side dishes a little more expensive than others but all in all would thoroughly recommend this restaurant,it’s a little moe special than most Indian restaurants.We are very lucky in Writtle to have 2 excellent restaurants with Olio’s and Pakwaan’s.

Visited Pakwaan with friends last Friday and had a very enjoyable evening, in fact we were there for over 3 hours. I mention the time spent in the restaurant as this is not your run of the mill average high street Indian. The restaurant is in the old bridge street premises, high quality fixtures and fittings including a lovely spacious Zinc bar to enjoy a pre meal drink. The service is attentive without being pushy, we had a gorgeous big copper covered table for 4 in the back room of the restaurant. So nice to have plenty of room for all the dishes. So, the food really is good. My wife said the chicken chops are the best chicken starter she has ever had in an Indian restaurant, and I was mightily impressed with the freshness and taste of the lamb kebab. The cuisine is Punjabi so its a little different to the normal mainly Bangladeshi restaurants in the area. Once you find your was around the menu, be assured that the food is tasty, freshly prepared and presented beautifully. We couldn't fault the quality of the dishes we ordered. Service was pleasant from the mainly English staff, but the owners are very visible and attentive and open to and questions about the food.

Visited with friends. We live locally, and this was our first visit since the change to an Indian Punjabi restuarant. I was a little worried having read some reviews, as though most are very positive, there are a couple that are quite negative. We needn’t have been concerned, we had an all round excellent experience. Staff were all friendly and attentive. Our drinks and popadoms arrived quickly. The staff we asked were knowledgable about the menu and happy to make recommendations. All of our starters and our mains were delicious, so you can’t really go wrong, though I would especially recommend the sea bass Ceylon as a main. There were small waits between courses, but nothing excessive when you bear in mind you are being served freshly cooked, high quality dishes. It’s great to know there’s somewhere so fab within walking distance again (definitely worth a drive for those not living in the village). Can’t wait to revisit soon.

Went for a family dinner here in the weekday. Restaurant seemed to be quite busy. Service was great the waiters were extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered a mixture of food which was all delicious, especially the lamb! Poppodums to start were nice but not the best around, could have done with bigger poppdouns but the waiter took this feedback well. Only down side would be they charge far too much for their coffee for a restaurant. Will definitly be back again!

Birthday treat for my husband from our Son and Daughter-in-law. What a joke and Indian Fine Dining with no Indian Staff so the staff that was there could not explain what the food was that you were ordering the price you pay for 1 course you could pay in a proper Indian for a whole meal. The portion you are given is more like a child’s portion and just a bit to spicey for some people. Starter 2 small pieces of chicken served with a teaspoon of pulses £8.50. biryani does not have a vegetable curry with it you have to ask for that and what you get is a sauce with no vegetable a joke.

We went Thursday evening had a really good meal totally different curries nice to try new flavours, the owner came out and spoke to us he was full of enthusiasm for his new restaurant. The staff we very friendly and we enjoyed the evening will definitely go back.

This was our first visit to the restaurant having looked for something new in the area. This restaurant has great potential but it needs to tweak and make a few refinements. The food is excellent but different to your usual Indian cuisine. Some staff members were very good but others seemed untrained and very young. There are no Indian waiters so menu knowledge was limited and didn’t feel as authentic as I would have liked. Menu advise was zero as the staff didn’t know the Indian dishes. Timing seems to be a slight problem. It appears to be still trying to work out what it wants to be. Everyone is very polite and courteous, and I do hope it succeeds.

We love to go out for an early dinner. My husband and daughter and myself had a table booked for 17h00. A very pleasant reception and extremely helpful with the menu. The food was really great. Extremely tasty and as hot as we all asked for. My husband prefers very hot to my mild and we were not disappointed. Douglas, our waiter, was around more than enough to make sure our dining experience was perfect. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

A fabulous evening with delicious food and a nice restaurant ambience.

Went to this restaurant expecting great things because its always nice to support new businesses. Some of the staff were pleasant enough, a girl with blonde hair & another smaller young lady with dark hair. They were atrentive, an older lady tended to engage with the group of young Asian looking men who were loud and totally disrespectful of the environment; the manager or proprietor (not sure) joined in the loud voices and face time session.

Food was great service was good had a great time with my work friends who turned up here and was quality food and very expert in fine dining

Visited and there with three friends at lunchtime the food was absolutely delicious the drinks equally so. Service was superb and we were all very happy with the experience. I’m amazed at some of the reviews because they are full of reviews of restaurants that existed before Pakwaan. Cannot trip advisor delete comments for restaurants at this location which do not exist anymore. It affects the purpose and credibility of the site. Trip advisor appears to be able to change the name in line with changes but apparently not the previous irrelevant comments. I really feel sorry for the present management company. Come on trip advisor sort this out.

Having booked a table for 7.30 it was a long wait to get 2/3 starters at 8.30 ( missing a cold starter ) then having mains and 3 more starters turn up at 9.15. Staff couldn’t correctly identify some of our main courses and one chicken dish was cold. When we spoke with the manager the excuse was they’d only been open 6 days. There was however no apologies or discount for a meal that, although extremely tasty, was more expensive than I’d usually pay. Shame as probably would have returned.

Tried Pakwaan with my husband for the first time today having never experienced Punjabi food before, we were very impressed with the service & quality of the food on offer, The chicken & Lamb was so tender & flavour some, You could tell the food was freshly cooked & it was perfectly spiced not too hot but enough to give it a kick. The owner & staff were friendly & happy to chat & update us on future plans & events for the restaurant. Definitely the best Indian restaurant in Chelmsford & very good value for money, we will be going back again soon.

Food was excellent!! Manager very chatty and welcoming. Definitely fine Indian dining as opposed to usual Indian meal experience which makes for a special night out. Every part of meal was delicious!! Good price too. Fabulous meal all round!!

Our first trip to Pakwaan and so glad we went. The Punjabi food was full of flavour, well balanced spices with dishes we haven’t seen before. For the excellent quality of cuisine the pricing was good. Service was excellent.

We were delighted with the new restaurant in Writtle. Lovely food! Great service! We had not tried Punjabi food before and were pleasantly surprised. The setting is also very agreeable. We shall be back soon!

Ok...so now its an Indian.... food is not your usual Indian of chicken.lamb, beef and prawns with 6 different types of curry..which is OK - as long as their other choices are good....

We came for dinner last night and couldnt be more impressed! The food is really something special, so authentic. The menu is different to any other Indian in the area, we loved it.

I read an article in the local newspaper announcing the arrival of this new restaurant and was excited, especially as I'm local to the town.

We went to Pakwaan for dinner and had an enjoyable evening and wonderful meal. The restaurant has a modern design with very nice decor and a central bar area which is impressive.

Don't be fooled by the rating of this restaurant. It has changed names but is still using old reviews to bump up its rating. Went last night for the first night of Pakwaan. It was terrible. The building and decor are beautiful and it feels clean and modern. Staff were plentiful but not very quick or well utilised. Asked a girl for a drink after waiting for a while to be told 'Im not allowed to serve!' We got no popadoms as we were supposed to despite someone checking that whether we had had them or not? The two tables next to us got theirs. Asked for a bottle of sparkling water that didn't arrive until we asked again and then we were charged for two (£8) when the bill came.

We used to love going to this restaurant, especially for Sunday lunch.

Reserved a table for friends and family. Had an amazing night from the service staff to the food I cannot find fault. The DJ was accommodating and was happy to play requests and the confetti cannon was a nice touch for ringing in the new year. Cannot wait to come back

Visited with family and had the set menu which was great value! Loved the food, I tried the prawns and the duck! Everyone enjoyed their meal. Very friendly and personable staff too!

My friends and I love coming to Bridge Street and can never fault it.

There are not enough words to begin describing how appalling our experience of this restaurant was. From start to finish it was a disaster, booking for 8pm but still no mains by 10pm, missing food; I could go on. We walked out before dessert. A large group booking with Pre-ordered food, however the kitchen were apparently not ready for us. The only positive note was the waiting staff, who were all lovely and polite, they continued to smile but you could tell they were mortified. Sack the chef and kitchen staff and start again.

I visits this restraunt with all my family for lunch. We had the private dining area, such a fantastic area for having and entertaining children at the table. The food was fantastic , we all had roast, the meat was cooked perfectly. The drink mixologist Lee was amazing entertained us at the table while talking through his amazing list of cocktails, he then custom made us some for our taste. Such a memorable dinning experience, thank you bridge street!

Had the worst restaurant experience in my 65 years of life this evening due to inept organisation and planning on the part of this establishment. Despite pre booking and having the meals ordered to named guests in advance they still managed to mess up the whole thing, so much so we ran out of time for the deserts and the main meal was served an hour and a half later after the first course. Even that was brought out bit by bit and fell way below expectations. The ambiance and place as a whole was very well presented, it was let down by poor service.

Starter soup cold ,main course beef tough no Yorkshire puds complained Yorkshire puds arrived and some more beef chef walked out and glaired at table did not bother with desert. Nice wine but can now understand why restaurant only a third fulL.

I had dinner with two friends. The only vegetarian main was Gnochi in butter! Hardly a main course! There was also karaoke which seemed somewhat out of place. I won’t go again.

Returned with a different set of friends to experience the same excellence of food & service as last time. We had a Groupon Voucher & we all had a brilliant evening with fantastic value. Nothing hurried and the waiter ( probably the Head Waiter ) made the evening even more amusing with his sense of humour which was just right. Only other comment to make was that when my colleague asked for a brandy he was not offered a choice but supplied with a Remy Martin at £17.50 a go which I felt was over the top.

Went in a Friday night for a nice meal with the family birthday and was really disappointed with the atmosphere.

Me and my family (12 adults 3 kids) came to bridge street for a family birthday on Sunday and could honestly not of had a better experience. We wanted somewhere we could stay for a few hours and take our time and we also wanted somewhere a little bit special as we were celebrating. We was seated in the privat dining room which was layed out beautifuly and all of our meals were lovely. The kids were happy and as we was in a privat area they could have a wander without annoying any other diners. Luke our waiter was brilliant and a special thanks to lee the cocktail maker who made some beautiful cocktails for the girls and some fun ones for the kids. We all can’t wait to come back thank you!

We went for a birthday dinner , and we were very impressed . We enjoyed the set menu and there can be too many choices at some restaurants . The portion sizes were just right , we enjoy the food without feeli9ng stuffed . The wine we chose was amazing (organic Spanish ) and we also had desert wine which was rec0omended . again it was a great paring with the cheese . We will be back as we thoroughly enjoyed our meal ,.

Went for a mid week dinner. Menu was limited and portions small. I had the vegetarian option which was 2 beetroot and a sprinkling of feta cheese. Not worthy of being called a main course in my opinion - an amble starter maybe. Others in the party had steak which they enjoyed. We were given the wrong wine which was corrected when mentioned. On the whole not worth the £50 / head we paid.

The waiter, Luke was fantastic. However the food was really disappointing £22.00 for ribeye steak £5.00 for side of chips!?, I know ribeye is fatty. But this was not a great meat to fat. Real shame dont recommend and will not go again. And when you spend this much money on food I expect a proper place mat not a laminated menu.

Went to the bar last night the music was amazing the Dj was playing a good mixture to suit everyone, the staff are all lovely they’re more then happy to help and the cocktails are to die for, especially the French Martini!

Not the same since being taken over. Meal with friends impossible to have conversation without shouting as disco playing. Only 1 other table of 2 eating. Not surprised no-one here. Very overpriced and not good value for money. Bread provided on table with oil etc without asking for it and then charged us when the bill came. Chips arrived halfway through eating my fish. Fish & chips for £21.00! Ordered dessert and then they didn't have it. Limited menu. Astronomical bill for what we had. We will not be returning.

Our first visit and we were very impressed, we had a groupon voucher which I advised when booking. No problem at all. The staff were very attentive and courteous. We had A three course lunch starting with a very generous plate of french onion soup , Followed by traditional roast,beef for me Turkey for my husband and then fruit crumble accompanied with a glass of wine. The food was lovely and we struggled to eat it all ! The decor is very nice, very clean toilets. The ambience was very pleasant not noisy at all. I would recommend this restaurant to friends and family

Groupon voucher for 2 courses with a glass of wine. No problem with booking whatsoever. Portions were a bit on thr small side but were very tasty and rich. Table service was excellent and the surroundings were delightful. No complaints at all.

The dj Friday was awesome, great atmosphere absolutely loved it! Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a great night out with great food and service.

Went to the restaurant on a Saturday evening 6 adults and 1 child. The car park had only 3/4 cars albeit early. Ordered rib eye steak the steak had been bashed out to a thin piece of meat , no veg or potatoes cost £22 , very expensive for so little would not recommend .

Lovely place to lunch. With the recent change of management we visited again not sure what to expect. The menu had changed and I think for the better. Was more imaginative as we enjoyed the Kangaroo steaks. Looking forward to our next visit.

Very plain. No garnish etc on unimaginative sandwiches, no prawn or smoked salmon for example. Scones were warm and good. Cakes were truly awful. Like shop bought slab cake defo not home made. Not worth £17.50.

Only gets one star as will not let you post with none. We purchased a Groupon voucher for a two course Sunday lunch with a glass of wine for 4 valid until end of November.

I've read some unhappy reviews on TripAdvisor linked to the change of concept which I don't agree with.

Great that a vegan afternoon tea option is provided, but a shame it was all shop bought free-from items, even down to an Alpro vanilla pot poured into a shot glass. Sandwiches (all rocket and tomato) were unimaginative.
