El Desperado Mexican Grill & Cantina in Sutton

Despite the reviews, we ignored them and thought we'd try this pace for ourselves. The food lacks any seasoning let alone spice and flavour, it tasted like pre-packaged basic brand food (mirowave rice, bought in guacamole, etc). If you are after mexiacn food do not go here! However, if you are after quantity over quality, it will not disappoint. The portions are very large.

Wow 🤩 Absolutely stunning atmosphere, great vibe and very warm hospitality from the staff there. The food is 10/10, its my second time going to them now had both the fajitas and the steak there… DELICIOUS 😋 EL DESPERADO !!! THANK YOU AND KEEP IT UP !!!

The food that came wasn’t worth £45. 2 burritos, 3 slices of garlic bread (cheap, frozen) and the poorest nachos I’ve ever seen. Very disappointing considering the price!

Waste of time. Called in advance tonight to ask what time they close and what time last food orders are, which was last orders 22:00 and close at 22:30. I drove 35 minutes there to find it’s already shut at 21:30. beyond disappointed.

I visited the restaurant on a quiet Tuesday evening to enjoy some Mexican food and cocktails. I ordered the chili con carne, which was good, but the tacos seemed to be from the cheapest possible pack and tasted like paper. I then ordered the steak, but it was a big mistake. It was chewy and undercooked. When I asked the waitress if the chefs could cook it longer on the grill, she rolled her eyes and took the plate. When she brought it back, the chips were cold and the steak tasted even worse. When asked if everything was okay, I mentioned that both steaks were not the best and we didn't enjoy them, as there was literally all steak left on the plate. The waitress didn't even apologize, offer anything else, or inform the chefs. It felt like we weren't being looked after at all. It was surprising to see a service charge added to the bill considering the poor experience we had. We are not the type to complain, but this was really disappointing. Sort this restaurant out!

I recently visited El desperado and had a fantastic experience! The atmosphere was welcoming. The food was delicious, with authentic flavors and generous portions. I particularly enjoyed the burrito and the bacon and cheese potato skins. The staff were friendly and making sure we had everything we needed. I would definitely recommend.

Went there on Tuesday evening to have dinner, ordered steak and it was super chewy, couldn’t eat, told waitress that steak is not nice, as of course we didn’t even eat the steak, but not that they didn’t offer to get something else but not even simple sorry, got the bill and guess what service charge is on it, very bad experience, my first and last time. Definitely not coming back 🤷🏼‍♀️ oh also cocktails taste like from the can, I’m sorry but in order to get customers to come back, you need to look after them.

Really nice surprise. First time here. Busy Saturday evening, good vibes, music and the front of the restaurant effectively opens up entirely which is great on a warm May evening. Extensive menu. Service and food excellent! Cocktails very good too and nicely priced. Even with a table of 20 celebrating a birthday, and numerous other tables, we hardly waited to give an order, or to receive food. Look forward to next visit.

Just lazy inauthentic bland lack-luster slop. You can make better at home. Everything tastes like it came out of some whole sale tub. Bland bland bland. Very poor tasting food. Service was fine, they added the service charge on automatically like most places now but I just paid so I could get the hell out of there

We have now visted maybe four or five times, and we are never dissapointed, we absolutely love it here and majority of the time he food comes out perfect. Service is always amazing!

Great, exciting fun place to eat

Delivered 15 mins early. Although it was a bit pricey, the food was well worth it. I had a beef burrito with rice & salad, and nachos with sour cream & guacamole. All food was at its correct temperature and presented well. I would order from here again & would highly recommend El Desperado.

Really nicely decorated place, good drinks and super lovely waiting staff! However apart from nachos and mega plain quesadilla my taco place and my husbands fajita were really bad. It really felt we got quantity over quality. I rarely write negative reviews but especially my tacos were tasting super bland despite being super juicy. It kinda felt like the chef just thrown mini conserved, store bought vegetables on a pan and then into another store bought taco shell. I think waiting staff is very well aware of how bad food is cause they were attending my table quite often asking: “how’s the food”. Neither me nor my husband had guts to be rude but genuinely we both made better Mexican at home. Really a shame, cause they could be very unique in South London where there is little of good Mexican food.

the tacos are good but way too expensive the burrito is horrible and way too expensive it doesnt let you buy tacos individually instead they make u buy 3 with some rice from bens original rice, the guacamole does smell a little funky

Salad in each dish looked like it was from yesterday's failed order and the veggie tacos were pretty poor. Not the greatest meal for the price....was better off ordering from Taz for less money, more and better food.

Food was fine, needed a bit of salt as a little bland but otherwise good. There were not many garlic mushrooms but they tasted good and the salad garnish was nice. The delivery driver was so rude, even though he was late he blamed me that he had been waiting outside for 10 minutes and calling me. He hadn’t, I had been looking out for him, he might of been at the front door maybe about 3 minutes tops, the time it took me to leave the flat and walk down to the front door. Met with a massive attitude

I had been looking for a Mexican restaurant near Morden, this was our first Mexican restaurant and we loved it. The atmosphere was perfect to be fully immersed in the theme, the music and the decor were very well chosen. The food was very good, we are vegetarians and ate very well. We even had a nice dessert. It's a very good restaurant in which we were able to spend a very good evening, we recommend that you take a look there. Parking spaces are not easy to find but are possible in the adjacent streets.

We ordered a takeaway from this restaurant some time ago and it was truly awful. Preparing us tortilla chips without any salsa let alone fresh salsa, as a side, really is falling at the first hurdle for any self-respecting Mexican restaurant. They didn’t even come with queso cheese sauce instead. Just the chips! Our burritos were dry and tasteless. The worst I’ve ever had. Even in this country. It is worth mentioning at this point that both of us have lived in the US (but are from Worcester Park) for many years where in the South West and most major cities nationwide, authentic Mexican food is almost the national cuisine. Like curry pretty much is here. One of us has also been to Mexico so we certainly know what decent Mexican food should taste like. This place has no business calling itself a Mexican restaurant and vegetables more appropriate for an English roast dinner like green beans have no place being in an authentic burrito. There were no refried beans though (even for the veggie option) which is pretty much a must have inside a non-meat based burrito. To make matters worse, the food was also over-priced. Mexican food in Britain is usually poor at the best of time (visit a Chipotle restaurant in London to taste what a real, delicious burrito should taste like- they’re as good as the US-based chipotles) but all the reviewers saying how great this restaurant is unfortunately have clearly no idea what real Mexican food tastes like at all. They don’t know what they’re missing. El Desperado is the perfect name for this place though. Avoid!

Best Mexican food I’ve had in the UK… it actually made me miss being home in Texas. Very good flavors and the ribs are the definition of fall of the bone. Thank you for the meal☺️

The service, staff were very good . Atmosphere too very good...but that's not enough if the food is not to the mark! This is supposed to be Mexican but I did not see the usual salsa with onion tomatoes and lemon. The flavour in food was just totally absent. The Old El Paso kits available in supermarkets are far better than the food served here, we found baby corn, potatoes, carrots and aubergines in the Taccos. No churro in a Mexican dessert list!. ZERO flavour. Won't go back, if possible I would ask for my money back. Lovely staff though...

Everything tasted like it was straight out of a packet or a microwave. The service was good, staff were attentive and polite but the food was truly awful.

Had a Christmas party here. Whole place was booked out just for our party. The service was excellent. Food came out piping hot. Portions were very generous.

Cold salad served in the same box as slightly undercooked fries with my Ribs and Wings combo. Separate fries were likewise slightly underdone. We reheated in an air fryer for another 7 minutes and they were better. Chicken and ribs were fine - quite a nice sauce but the overall experience lost by cold salad served in the same box as the chips, which made the salad warm and the chips lukewarm and mixed with salad dressing and mayo from the slaw.

Lovely food, good portion sizes. Shame it wasn't very busy so lacked a bit of atmosphere. Drinks were a little slow to arrive as only.one server on duty, but generous sized cocktails and friendly staff.

The food tasted like it had all been heated in a microwave so dry and absolutely tasteless. After looking in the kitchen there was no sign at all thst anything had been cooked fresh. Food so bad. The atmosphere qas great but staff were not into interacting. The company I qas with was great but the restaurant not so great. Not impressed on the slightest x xxxxx

Calamari was tougher than rubber. Waitors don't communicate with each other so they all come up to your table asking questions that have been asked by other members of staff. Over priced for what you get. Will not be returning.

Nacho starters a bit poor. Quite expensive for the amount you get. No beer on tap. Appears to be bottles only from what was offered. Wouldn't go again.

The burrito was tasty but really not worth £15. The wraps.... tiny tiny wraps for again 15 pounds. Cut corners no repeat orders.

I love Mexican food, although I almost always have the same steak and chicken fajitas. It serves our family well with two children under 15 and we all leave happy and well fed and watered. The cocktail menu is pretty good and staff are always on hand when required. No matter which evening we visit, either weekday or weekend there is an atmosphere. I have had multiple birthdays and just random weekday visits and always look forward to my next encounter!

Such a good restaurant in terms of food and decor, the chairs were packed in a little too tightly between tables though in my opinion which gave a bit of a squished feeling and a lot of disruptions as guests got up from their tables

Very disappointed with the food. Chicken Burrito was more like a chicken pizza. The prawn cocktail was terrible with hardly any prawns. Would never order from there again…

Been here a couple of times and food is excellent and reasonably priced. Service can be a little slow at busy times but the staff are very friendly and welcoming. I would recommend you book a table as it's always very busy

Great food and atmosphere and groovy sombreros provided

AVOID! Absolutely inedible, prawn cocktail was warm and tasted off, calamari was well overcooked and came with a tub of sweaty warm mayo, and the salads had roten lettuce in it. The desert was alright but clearly bought in, and I couldn't trust the chicken so didn't even try that. There was nothing Mexican in any of the dishes. Very disappointed, paid for a meal that went straight to the bin.

Definitely ordering from here again...I can't believe I just discovered they was on just eat today! Easily my favourite restaurant! I got mixed fajitas and they come red hot and tasted exactly the same as when your sitting I'm the restaurant! Loveeeeed it

Service is very good. Food was also very nice. It’s just the cocktails that was disappointing. You cannot taste any alcohol in them, they taste like a mock tail which is half the price.

Absolutely delicious meal! Everything from presentation to the gorgeous flavour and the fact that it was still beautifully hot when it arrived. Will definitely order again.

Went for a birthday dinner with my girlfriend on a Monday evening. Really peaceful vibe with chilled out music and an excellent dinner (loaded potato skins, chicken and beef fajitas, desperado bbq mix grill). We've had it before and will definitely order again! Lovely friendly service and they even treated my girlfriend to a happy birthday wedge of chocolate cake! Haven't been since pre-covid and so glad this little gem is still there!

I got beef fajitas. The food was good, the only thing i'd chage is make the wraps larger, it was a bit awkward with tiny ones they serve, so i ended up using my own supermarket wraps
