Ego at The Schooner Inn, Penarth in The Vale of Glamorgan

First and last time here. First of all we were spoken to so rudely by a member of staff, nanina I think her name was, brown hair pregnant lady. She’s not very nice atal spoke to us all like crap the whole way through our visit! So this made us not want to return before we even had our food. Then the food was over priced, and vile! I had stale bread, the meat skewer I had was disgusting like eating hard coal. Didn’t enjoy nothing about this place. Definitely avoid!!

Lovely venue for a gathering. Food was very good and pleasantly served. There is ample parking and a friendly vibe in Penarth

Not very vegetarian friendly. Sunday lunch with family, 1 vegi starter & 1 vegi main options on the Sunday lunch menu. When the main arrived it was 1 tiny sliver of nut roast compared to 3 generous cuts of meat for all the non-vegi mains. All on my table remarked on it because the difference was so obvious. So I mentioned this to the waitress who agreed “Yes it is a little piece of nut roast” but did nothing about it and went away.

Disgusted today , won’t go there again and been going there for many years My birthday was ruined , couldn’t even use the disabled toilets Please sort the place out

Lovely building with a ot of parking. Thr service was good however there was a long wait between ordering and the meal being delivered to the table. I ordered Beef bourguignon and was extremely disappointed. It consisted primarily of good mashed potatoes and very little beef. Sadly would only revisit if chosen by friends.

Starters were very nice. We had pil pil prawn, calamari and garlic mushrooms. For main course I had a Moroccan lamb. It was ok, but wasn't enough meat in my dish. My daughter had a fillet steak and she was happy with it.

The six of us had steaks. Three of them were not good, so were not all eaten. Two of us asked if we could have fried onions. When the meals came and I queried why no onions. The waitress looked at me as if I had two heads. The other waiter came and stated they don't do fried onions only onion rings. Why couldn't that be addressed at point of order. It was our Wedding Anniversary. Not impressed.

Lovely gem of a place , and dog friendly to boot

Lovely food and plenty of it. Excellent service. 100% will go back. Went back on 5th March and again food was lovely. Another great evening was spent at Ego with excellent food and great service. Took friends who had never been before, and they really enjoyed it. We have been back again, and the food was lovely, and the service was excellent. 26th July 24. Back again on Nov 8th, 24, and again, excellent service and lovely food.

Had a lovely afternoon tea, with friends. I fully recommend this place.

Had a really lovely 2 courses from Dine out at Ego menu today. First visit to try out on my birthday and will definitely be returning. The Gambas were gorgeous and my paella was so good and very generous. The Prawns were superb😋. Hubby had morrocan lamb with cous cous and again really delicious. The staff were lovely and there was a nice relaxed atmosphere. Looking forward to another vist😁

Food is reasonable with a big selection and the cocktails are quite good. Food portions are quite small though for this type of restaurant and therefore not really value for money. Nice size restaurant too.

I recently had an upsetting lunchtime experience at Ego in Penarth, where the manager's behavior left me deeply disappointed. Despite a quiet restaurant, we endured long waits and inattentive service. When we politely questioned the delay, the manager shockingly falsely accused the query as rudeness and cited that as the excuse for our wait, without basis or apology. His dismissive and unprofessional manner made us feel unwelcome, and other diners expressed similar frustrations in the carpark as we left to dine elsewhere. I have raised this with head office, hoping no one else has to endure such poor treatment.

Food was nice, cocktails were not palatable, I couldn't finish them absolutely horrible was given another one in replacement for the the two I didn't drink, then was charged over £70 because the offer wasn't ammended. Probably won't go again. I didn't tip which is unlike me.

Lovely first experience at this restaurant! Staff were courteous and patient whilst we looked at the menu, which we greatly appreciated. Starters, mains & afters were fabulous, i hope to eat here again :) Thank you for a lovely experience!

Lovely, friendly atmosphere. The place itself looks slightly upmarket more of a restaurant than a pub that does food. Really pleasant dining experience with menu choices to suit all preferences and budgets. Would thoroughly recommend.

Fantastic Sunday lunch at Ego yesterday, food was delicious and service was great

Great food, service, especially by Lucy was excellent . Table layout in our area was a bit close, was too easy to overhear others conversations but overall very good. Will definitely visit again.

If you have the time to wait around for hours, then eat here! 40 mins before we were offered drinks. 1 hour and 20 for starters to come out. Over 2 hours for a main (we had a 6 year old with us too) Even called the manager over who didn’t even apologise for the delay after we made them aware of how long we’d been waiting. Food is nice but that’s about it. A birthday celebration meal that was pretty much ruined due to the long waits.

Me and two of my friends came here for a birthday celebration, food was bland, service staff was not attentive and overall the place has a weird vibe. Honestly wouldn’t recommend this place at all.

Where to start? Small table, tucked away - the place was nearly empty so why? My friend had a voucher for 20% off the a la carte menu and 2 glasses of prosecco. Over 10 minutes wasted trying to get on the WiFi to call up the voucher. Eventually they agreed to honour it but then decided the lunch menu wasn't included (obviously the prix fixe wasn't but there was no other exclusion shown) so nothing suitable for my friend, who has allergies, and no compromise offered; there was no alcohol free alternative to the prosecco. After 20 minutes we left and drov⁸e to another restaurant where we had a very nice meal at a much nicer table. Interestingly, despite a smaller menu they managed to provide a better selection for us.

I suppose where you normally eat is relevant, but, I live in France and thereby hangs the problem. Aperitifs weren't accompanied by "nibbles", the mushroom starter was delicious but no bread basket (50-70 pence?) and my medium rare steak (with all the tasty fat cut off!) was well done. A pleasant evening with family, would I go there again, no.

We had a nice meal. I had a tagine which was lovely but let down by the flat breads served with it. I'm pretty sure they were just pitta breads straight out of the packet, not even toasted. The atmosphere felt 'old', which I wasn't expecting from the website. We were not a young group but felt we significantly bought down the average age.

Food was good, the wait time was a bit long but the service was attentive.

Overall, the food was very good......except the choice made from the children's menu. Spaghetti Bolognese....totally bland, tasteless and watery which led to a very unhappy child...

Had lunch here 12/10/24 and compared to our last visit two years ago the food and service was disappointing; the two younger ladies were perhaps lacking in humour, one knocking over a bottle of beer which fortunately had little left in it, perhaps it had been a busy day for them. Regarding the food, the Iberian style pork I had two years ago was exceptional; but it was not on the menu today. The Moroccan lamb I chose was pleasant but not in the same class. My wife’s vegetarian pizza had a tasty base but the topping was also uninspiring. We were asked when being served if we would like any sauces to go with the meals; when we enquired of some balsamic glaze for the pizza (a fairly common accompaniment for pizza) we were told they didn’t do it. However, the venue is very nice indeed and the deco tastefully done and is kept well. It is also good that they have a section where you can dine accompanied by your pets. Will I rush back? Probably not for a while. But, it may have just been an off day for them, which happens at any establishment now and again.

The menu has been updated since my last visit and there was a lot more of choice. There is a lovely variety of different foods on offer, I had a piella and it was lovely.

Great service and good food, nice atmosphere, dog friendly, bar staff make great cocktails. Only thing is the menu has been the same for a long time and we are running out of things to eat and are fed up with the same options.

Great Sunday lunch, good service, we will return.

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent visit to Ego. We were a table of 10 Parent Carers who try and dine out once a month. The feedback from all that attended said it was a lovely experience all round and would definitely like to visit again soon.

We visit here annually as a family to remember my dear mother who loved Schooner. There is a good choice of food, including lighter meals for those of us who don't have big appetites. Love the location and the staff are always friendly and helpful.

Food was very good. Liesl the waitress was fabulous. We have been a few times previously and the previous waitresses were abrupt and never smile. Liesl was the complete opposite, smiley, helpful and friendly. Restaurant was cold which is the reason for the average atmosphere score.

Nice restaurant- very busy so had. A bit of a wait for meal. My steak was fab . Husband’s steak pretty small. Others were ok.

OK, but some veggies were almost cold

The visit was spoilt by badly behaved children being allowed to run riot by their parents through the restaurant. They were loud, unruly and spoilt the atmosphere for all other diners. Management failed to ask the parents to control their children. It was as if they didn’t want to get involved and possibly feared the potential consequences. However, the result of their inaction means we will not dine there again and I suspect many other customers there that evening won’t also.

Waitress was not friendly and didn't smile at all so that spoilt the meal a bit

Very pleasant surroundings, good attentive staff very nice food ! Especially personal waitress unfortunately didn’t ask her name but a six former at out local senior school beautiful auburn hair, smiley funny very intelligent hoping to study law! Most impressed with staff and service !

Anniversary occasion with party of six. Three had starters of prawn cocktails which looked good but had an extra ingredient added which created a strange peppery taste. Our other starters were fine. Mains were poor. Three sirloin steaks and one Fillet Steak were very poor quality and didn't even look like sirloin steaks with a lot of fat and gristle. Fillet Steak was so tiny it was only about two mouthfuls. These steaks are comparable in price to other restaurants so should have been far better quality than what we were given. My son had lamb with gnocchi which was the smallest main course ever, certainly nowhere near a mansize portion and were expecting something else to accompany it. I'm glad to say our desserts upt the meal and were very good. No Prosecco was offered as part of anniversary deal and service was lack lustre and slow. I have visited many times as so near to where we all live and have always enjoyed meals and service snd also the lovely atmosphere there always has been but have to say this was a memorable meal for all the wrong reasons. Unusually we were surprised how quiet it was for a Friday evening as on previous occasions it has always been so busy. We won't be rushing back.

I am constantly impressed by how good the food is here. They really do punch above their weight! Took my mother here for Sunday lunch recently, Ella, our waitress, was lovely - welcoming, friendly and attentive but not overly-so, she got the balance just right. The chargrilled chicken and lamb souvlaki starter I had was absolutely delicious. And the perfect sized portion for a starter. I wouldn't normally choose a Sunday roast (which is why we like Ego, they have a full A La Carte menu available even on a Sunday lunch time) but I opted for the prime roast rump of beef this time and it was absolutely delicious. Beautifully pink and plenty of it. The vegetables were done exactly as I like them, just slightly al dente, and the red cabbage was a stand out. If you like your beef well done and your vegetables boiled and mushy, this probably isn't the place for you. My wife chose the Moroccan Lamb which, having tried it, I can confirm was also excellent. We'll be back soon I'm sure.

4th time I've been. Think that says enough in itself. The food is always really good, the service is always very good and the weekly deals and prices of those deals is very good. I'll be going back again and again and again.

May I thank Remy, Jason and the other lady who works for Ego assisting Mary and I when we fell in the foyer. The first aid was excellent and I apologise for the loss of your tea towel which the nurse at A and E threw into the bin. A special mention of thanks to the guest diner who immediately telephoned the ambulance service and helped Mary to her feet. We spent over eight hours at the hospital before Mary was seen by a wonderful nurse called Mal who thought that the Wednesday offer was tremendous. It might be a while before we see you again but we cannot wait to be back. Our heart felt gratitude to the staff. Richard Dawson

Great food, friendly and efficient service, lovely atmosphere. Thoroughly recommend.

The staff were lovely as well as helpful but the service was slow. We didn’t receive gravy for the one meal after we asked for it, another guests food was too tough to eat and left it. Wait time for drinks and food was quite long.

I've eaten here a few times now and it's always been nice. Yesterday we had the lamb dish with couscous and it was very soft and tasty. Although we were sitting below a speaker the background music was in the background and made for a very enjoyable experience. Staff are always lovely and food tastes fresh.

First visit here. We will be back! Great food every meal was seasoned perfectly and tasted great!

Food is excellent. However, the staff really compliment the experience with their care and attention to you.

Having been a number of times in the last few months, this was by far our poorest experience. Our previous experiences were all evening meals and this was a lunchtime meal. Service was good when we got it! My meal was chicken and chorizo paella but was very lacking in chicken and chorizo! The rest of our party enjoyed there meals.

This was our first visit to Ego, we book Sunday lunch and requested a window seat. We arrived slightly early, but taken straight to our table be a window. Lovely setting. Once settled the staff address our order and we settled down to enjoy out meal. The whole experience was lovely, service excellent and the food was very good. The pricing was excellent value. Very enjoyable Sunday dinner. Thank you and look forward to returning soon.

The service we received from Kaz was outstanding! We called in without a reservation whilst visiting the area for a family funeral. The food was fine and Kaz made us welcome and ensured we were happy with a pleasant but professional attitude. Thank you!

Such a lovely relaxed environment to dine in. The service was exceptional, our waiter was wonderful, nothing was too much trouble.

Not been here for a while, however it is a restaurant we like, but last Thurdfay was below average Service received from kazz was excellent, but the food let the evening down. My 1st steak was sent back and the 2nd wasn't much better. Chef couldn't get my medium steak right. Ended up both times more well done Dad ordered fish, the portion was very small It's a shame as not been for a good few months but not as good as usual amd now you've put your prices up quite a bit !
