Food was mixed when we visited Saturday 10th August. In fairness my wife’s vegan club sandwich was good BUT my ciabatta with haggis, cheese and onion chutney was below average- all I could taste was the chutney as there was little haggis or cheese. No staff member came up to ask if ‘all was ok’ at any point whilst eating. On the plus side there was enough room to be comfortable albeit perhaps down to quality of food as most places packed during Edinburgh Fringe!

Had never been here before, but decided to pop in one cold day for a hot choc and a pastry to warm up. - Good selection of cakes as well as a variety of coffee's and hot beverages to choose from. - seemed to be popular, and enjoyed my visit that much and sat and chatted to friend that time just ran away from us - enough space to get a pram in but may have to take care trying to get a wheelchair in - toilets on floor above but there may have been a disabled toilet on same floor but did not notice, not an incredibly big place, but cosy and friendly and would certainly consider going again.

We popped in here as an alternative to the big chains but the experience was poor. Firstly, no scones. Then they couldn’t do pancakes as they only serve breakfast at certain times (this is not mentioned in the menu). My drink was not brought at all and I had to go back and ask for it again to be asked “Are you sure?”. To be honest the drink was tiny and the chocolate in it made it grainy and not pleasant so perhaps I’d have been better off without it. As a previous reviewer mentioned, it does have good toilets which is all that lifted it above a one star review. I’ll not be returning.

Shame that what looks like a great cafe in great location is ruined by a bunch of lazy, rude staff. Just simple manners appear to be beyond their ability whilst they just hang about. It looked inviting from the outside on a rainy day in Edinburgh. We sat ourselves down on a tiny table in the window, brushing crumbs from the previous diner from our own table. We both wanted a cooked breakfast to set us up for the day, upon ordering we heard there was only one member of staff on her own. (At that we should have vacated, no way should a cafe still be attempting to serve hot food as short staffed as she was). It took around 20 minutes for 2 black coffees to arrive, which were pretty average and a bit oily. FIFTY MINUTES after our initial order, our plates were thrown in front of us. Cold, greasy, cheap looking and missing ingredients listed on the menu (missing beans first thing in the morning? and missing haggis, the reason we picked the Scottish breakfast). The missing items were not explained or replaced.

This was the worst Full Scottish Breakfast we had in Edinburgh, everything was cheap and it looked as if it was microwaved, the food didn't even seem to have been prepared on the premises; the sausage has not seen any meat (and we are not vegetarians) and the bacon was hard and cold. We had to prompt the waitress to be served some bread and butter....otherwise they would have happily left us without any....and very tiny round tables, not fit to accommodate all the cutlery pots and plates that come with a normal cooked breakfast....we had to desert to a nearby place to wash off the greasiness this breakfast left in our mouths....so, we will definitely not be returning

Great location and nice menu but dire service. Had to ask THREE times to get the table wiped - and the cursory wipe was inadequate to remove the remains of the previous occupant's meal. Waitress spilled the milk on my jeans - no apology - and then I had to ask twice for replacement milk, by which time my tea was cold! Staff had a surly, hostile attitude, almost as if I was to blame for wanting to eat at a clean table and to have the milk they’d spilt over me replaced! An unpleasant atmosphere indeed. The breakfast took an age to arrive. The veggie haggis was very good, but the veggie sausage’s only resemblance to a sausage was in shape. It was a rather unpleasant mix of mashed potato, raw grated carrot and something green (broccoli?). Certainly won’t be returning unless they send their staff on a customer service course.

We are not one's to complain about things. But we were very disappointed with this place. Firstly the girl at the front wasn't friendly, when our food came she practically threw the plates on the table. My husband wanted a typical Scottish breakfast, before we had a full day of site seeing. I ordered the veggie breakfast. And what we got was lukewarm food which very much seemed like it was warmed up in the microwave! It was not appetising, I could not finish my food. They could do very well as they are in a great spot. But the food and staff are lacking. I was looking across the street the whole time wishing we had gone somewhere else. I'd put 1 star but inside deco was okay.

Just there for a quick lunch, I have to change table 3 times as all the tables are covered with bread, the staffs don’t clean the table or chairs when customers left, they would rather stand there listening to music or chatting! Very unwelcoming and rude staffs! I ordered a soup as there are nothing else they serve hot, but unfortunately there is a small paper label in my soup! Shocking! Took it to the staffs and one of the girl without glasses said there is nothing else they can do rather than take the soup away or give me a refund. I told her maybe you can give your customer an apology at least? Looks like the food hygiene standard is very low at this coffee shop. I’m very doubtful of how this coffee shop would survive, the flat white is and coffee bon bon we ordered wasn’t nice at all either.

Nice pleasant surroundings and nice to see some old photos and typewriters on show. I had a coffee and brownie. It was good but the brownie was rather dense and heavy. The staff at the till point were pleasant, but the girl clearing the tables looked a bit surly and stared a lot. A bit weird I thought but having now read the other reviews there is obviously a bit of attitude with the staff. A real pity as good staff are important and make a place. As we were making a quick exit we were met at the door by the surly counter staff who all but heckled as we left. If it wasn’t so awful it could be amusing! All in all I’d give it a wide berth.

Visited about 11:00am on Friday August 10. The place was busy, as you'd expect in the Festival, but it was not full and the available tables were all laden with dirty dishes from the previous occupants. The one person clearing tables seemed to be overwhelmed and this had clearly affected her temper. The girl taking the orders at the counter was pleasant and efficient, as was her colleague making the coffee though she was also very busy and it took 15 minutes to get our coffees. When I mentioned to the table-clearer (the only staff member on the floor) that we had also ordered scones, I didn't expect to be snapped at and told they would be out in a minute - after all that time this seemed unnecessarily rude, though she did go and get them. They came with cream and jam rather than the butter we had ordered so I went back to the counter to change it and again the girl there was pleasant. The family at the next table mentioned they had been reprimanded by the table-clearer for wiping crumbs from the previous customers from the table onto the floor so she was clearly having a bad day. The coffee and scones were good and I am prepared to give them one more chance to improve the service before deciding not to go there again.

This is a nice little establishment with a chilled vibe. We sat down then one of us went to the counter to order a coffee whilst we decided what to have to eat but were then told that we had to order at the table. This was fine with us although we had to wait a while as the chap was very busy working across all the tables. The coffee then came and smelt fab...the problem was the temperature - barely warm. I was trying to catch the attention of the chap serving to ask for a hotter drink but he was just too busy. So I just necked it and decided not to bother ordering any food but to try somewhere else. We again had a wait to ask for a bill and in the end paid at the counter. Overall...disappointing which was a real shame.

We were in Edinburgh for a few hours today and called in for mid morning cuppa. We ordered two teas and fruit scones, one with just butter and the other with the jam and clotted cream.. Despite selling tea, only brown sugar on the table. When we asked for white sugar we were more or less told to get it ourselves, 'over at the condiments'!

Wow, what a find. I know it's obvious from the month that the festival is on and I'm sure that some venues exploit that to the full, but that cannot be said for The EdinburghPress Club. Good service, excellent standard of food and excellent value for money. Yes, they'd run out of one of our requested sandwich fillings but hey just confirms how busy they'd obviously been. We will definitely return and recommend to others to do the same!pity more establishments weren't as good as this!

I had a coffee and scone for breakfast when I stopped in. Both were good but not a great atmosphere. I was stuck listening to the Drake CD SUPER LOUD the entire time. Had I known I had to put up with that, I would have gone somewhere else. The staff also seemed more concerned about talking to the themselves at the front counter than actually waiting on customers.

We had a light lunch here during a recent visit. Sandwiches and coffee. I think the young girl that served us was new to the job and had difficulty speaking and understanding English. She had to keep coming back to clarify what we had ordered. The food and coffee was fine.

Was recommended here as I am celiac and they have a gf menu. As we were unsure what time we would be going (prior commitment before hand) I did not book. We arrived at 2.45pm and there was a sign outside saying 'bookings only, no walk ins' This was NOT on their website. We went in and spoke to a female member of staff who advised exactly what the sign had said. I then spoke to a male member of staff and asked where on their website it stated what the sign said, he said it didn't. Advised that due to rugby being on, they were unusually busy. The restaurant is large and they were not full to capacity. Asked if there was anyway we could have a table for 2 for an hour, point blank told no. We won't be returning.

The range of coffees here was quite impressive. The atmosphere was welcoming and I must say that the staff provided excellent service.

Booked in the restaurant for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We weren’t staying at the hotel but did add that we were celebrating upon booking. We arrived early expecting to have a drink at the bar but the table was ready for us. We received a complimentary glass of champagne each on arrival. The staff were fantastic and couldn’t have done more. They even sorted us out with a special dessert to help celebrate the occasion. The food was to a high standard and the portion size was perfect. Altogether a fantastic meal and exemplary service.

We approached the café at 9am with laundry and were greeted by four Scottish Terriers who were apparently running the place, until Graham arrived up the stairs to ask what the heck we wanted...and we knew immediately we were in the right place! I've read some of the reviews, and if you don't understand Graham in the first 5 seconds of him opening his mouth, you don't deserve to be there...and I am pretty sure Graham will know/sense it himself. I think he relishes poor reviews. But we felt immediately at home, and once we passed the "test", Graham was the perfect host. I had to put up with insults on my lack of fashion sense and some uncomfortable history lessons regarding the villainy of George Washington, but my wife and I would not trade our experience for anything! Graham practically did our laundry for us, made us coffee, and even gave me a lovely (empty) can of haggis. Thank you for the experience Graham! I hope you enjoy the US Dollar Bill (with Washington on it)...and I won't forget that American history is really Scottish history!
