A super bed and breakfast with a lovely vegan curry and home baked ecclefechan tart in the bar which had an open fire. Steve and Mary looked after us like a mum and a big brother. Could not do enough for us including a very welcome lift to and from hoddom Bridge as we were walking the annandale way. And a packed lunch to order. Will recommend to all, especially walkers.

Rooms were good. Disappointed with availability of red wine but the food was wholesome, fresh and tasty. Breakfast was very good.

As well as being beautiful and historic, I found this family run hotel extremely welcoming and accommodating. Lovely area with friendly helpful people. I will go there again.

Booked a room for when we reached nearby as an overnight stop on our way to Loch Awe. Our room, number 6, was superb, very large, a super-king bed with really comfortable mattress. En-suite bathroom, plenty of hot water. Scrumptious evening meal and breakfast. We took our dog and she was made welcome by the excellent host and staff. There is a large area of grass at the rear of the hotel for dogs, and good parking. Twelve days later we rang on our journey back to see if they had a room on the off chance and they offered us number 6 again which was absolutely perfect. Marks out of ten? Eleven! Thank you so much for a marvellous Scottish welcome.

We stayed here overnight on our way up to the highlands and what a very pleasant surprise it was. The hotel is just off the motorway but it is so peaceful. We was greeted by the son of the owner who was very polite and friendly. The rooms have been recently refurbished and are decorated very tastefully with tea making facility and there is also a tv. We ordered breakfast the following morning which was freshly cooked to perfection. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have booked to stay again during our next trip up to the highlands.

Real ale choice was disappointing with just 1 hand-pump ale on, but we are living in odd times regarding public venturing out. Food average, rather like school dinners really, edible, but nothing special. My friend had sausages and vegetables, which he described as very average and lacking any style or taste. Veg is so reasonable to buy in and prepare, so why do pubs serve mean size portions of it ? carrots and cauliflower were the size of a mouse. Full marks though for fresh, it wasnt tined. Pleasant enough clean seating and spaced out tables. The Gents toilet is out of the 1960's. I would return strangely as I would like to try it again. The decor is 'tired' but allowances made, the place is surviving in hard times and its good that it is still open. Real ale and food are important in any town.

The food is all home cooked and of the highest quality - and you get plenty!! The restaurant is cosy with a real fire giving a country inn atmosphere. There is a good choice for everyone and plenty of veggie options

Good selection of food plus specials at a very reasonable price made the Hotel a great place to eat. A roaring fire and a friendly atmosphere in the bar made our trip perfect

The open fire in the bar draws most diners (and drinkers) to this part of the hotel. An eclectic decor offers something extra to look at. Home cooked food, and decent wines and beers at sensible prices. Breakfast is served in a separate room that is less to our liking. Having said that all is well bearing in mind the economical cost of dinner, drinks, bed and breakfast.

Our stay at the Ecclefechan Hotel was one of the accommodation highlights of our recent trip to Scotland and Wales. The hotel is modest looking from the outside but the room was absolutely A1. The service was excellent with wonderful pub meals and excellent breakfasts with special dietary needs met very willingly. We will look to staying there again when we next visit the area and would heartily recommend it.

Food was ok, home cooked potatoes and chunky cut veg. Average pub food I would say. Very reasonably priced and you get a good pint. The hotel itself is being done up so don't expect too much decor wise but the staff friendly and it's dog friendly too.

We were booked to stay the night in Glasgow, but thought we'd get a meal before we got there, and Ecclefechan was just a random choice, just off the motorway. Although it's a bit rough and ready at the edges, it offered really god, basic pub grub, and the haggis, neaps and tattie tower was great fun. And my husband liked the Ecclefechan Tart that he bought one from the store opposite to eat at leisure. The family who run the place were really friendly. Not a fine dining location, but great for pub grub.

We had a day out yesterday and ended up here for coffee. The sign at the entrance said the cafe was open until 4.30. As it was just before 4 when we parked round the back we thought we had plenty of time. However when we entered the cafe I approached the counter to order I was told in no uncertain terms that they were shut. When I pointed out that their sign had said it was open until 4.30 the rude assistant pointed to the sign on the counter which said last orders 4. I said it was 4 and we only wanted coffees she said 'well we're shut'. You would think that after 2 years of pandemic that businesses would be grateful for any money they could get, well that's not the case in this cafe. We had been going to buy some plants but left empty handed and on the way out told the assistant in the shop that we wouldn't be back. Their loss is someone else's gain

We ate here and finished our meal, the waitress cleared away and we decided we'd have another round of drinks before leaving. We waited 5, 10 minutes and the waitress never came back. I went in search of someone but couldn't find our waitress. I didn't like to open the doors to the kitchen. We waited another 5 minutes and my wife said 'this is ridiculous' and went off in pursuit. She found our waitress in the bar (was she watching TV, did she fancy the barman?) and asked if we could get some service. The waitress said 'the restaurant is closed', as if we were being unreasonable in expecting to be served a round of drinks. No, the restaurant isn't closed if you've still got people sitting at a table you're serving and you haven't asked them if they want a dessert or offered them the bill but simply buggered off. So we said OK, can we just pay the bill. Which we did, and obviously didn't leave tip. We won't be going back.

A beautiful grand building in a wonderful setting. It was very quiet but the service and food were excellent. Not cheap but definitely worth it for a special occasion.

This restaurant is part of Smiths hotel at Gretna Green. We were in the final days of our holiday in Scotland and wanted to have a special meal. We were staying at the hotel and saw this had good reviews. Well it didn’t disappoint. It was good that you could pick and mix from the a la carte menu and the bar menu. Every course was very good. Because we had courses from both menus I didn’t think it was too expensive. The service was good although it was very busy with other events going on. The staff were kept busy but were still attentive to our needs. Would recommend if you want something special or just for an evening meal.
