Eastern Oriental in Brentwood

This restaurant owner needs to seriously think about how they treat their customers. It was 12.30pm when we started walking through the door. He immediately said to us you will need to leave at 2pm. Not a hello or how many of you. Just that. Put our back up to start. We had two babies in highchair. One is 1 and the other is 2. The waiter was extremely apologetic and said he was very sorry but he was told to tell us the babies would need to pay full price for an adult meal. No child meals available. They probably ate 6 chips between them. We was charged £15 for one portion of chicken balls and one chips. Which they didn’t eat. Then the waiter again apologised and pointed out on the menu a compulsory 10 percent service charge. We pointed out that it’s illegal to make a service charge compulsory but was told we had to pay it. There was no disabled toilet. There was a huge staircase to the toilets. Totally unsuitable for disabled or elderly people who can’t do stairs. On the positive side the food was very good. However due to the rude owner and the service charge we won’t be returning. They had no kids menu or kids drinks. To charge for 2 babies was disgraceful and they should be ashamed. Our bill for 4 adults for lunch was £144. Beware.

Been coming here for the paste 20 years and the food quality and ambience still remained when it was taken over. It was my place to go for a good local Chinese food/night out. However past year i/we havent been impressed with either take away or dine in experience. Today’s visit will be the last one i will experience. Ambience was dead, felt cold inside, they couldn’t cater for vegetable pancakes as the head chef who’s the boss said he won’t make it, their signature chow main noodles (my main reason for going) tasted bland amongst the rest of the dishes. Very disappointed and let down.

The food was fine but the service was terrible. Rude, unfriendly, staff who stood over you and watched you while you were eating, cleared plates before the table was finished and generally seemed to think that they were doing you a favour by serving you. They were completely passive aggressive. We were a large party and the waitress stood directly behind me whilst we sorted out the bill clearly annoyed that we were checking the receipt. I would not visit again.

I was so disappointed! Staff were extremely rude and made me and all of my friends extremely uncomfortable, taking plates we were still eating from, accused my friends of putting food in there bag and worst of all me and all my friends was terribly ill after having the meat!

I decided to take my son and daughter for a meal, we were seated and offered drinks, mine was a pink gin and served in a half pint glass. Really!! We ordered starters that were average and a waitress came over to take our mains. She had the most disgusting attitude and was so impatient, my son started to order and after ordering a side and 1 main she said is that it and slamming her arms down as if we were an inconvenience to her, I looked at her and she laughed in my face, I was speechless. We all looked at each other and I asked her to get someone else to take our order. She stomped off. In total shock I asked the mgr to have a private word. Explaining to him what happened, his reply was shes been here a year and is like this, bad attitude. I said I'm happy to pay for what we had 1 gin, 4 cokes and 2 starters. I wasnt hungry anymore as I was upset. He then charges me £46.50 for the worst service and food. I'm disgusted that he even had the nerve to charge me, we were in there 25 mins and the starters were below average. Will not recommend this restaurant and will not return if it was the last place to eat out in Brentwood. Food: 1/5 | Service: 1/5 | Atmosphere: 1/5

First time visiting this restaurant and all I can say is Wow! Absolutely tasty, freshly prepared food. Staff were so lovely and helpful. Gutted that I didn’t know about this restaurant before especially when it’s only in the next town but will definitely be back. Thank you

I was fascinated by how most reviews are either 1 or 5 stars for this place, but now I know why. Essentially, there is one friendly waitress, and one unfriendly waitress. Depending on how much interaction you get from each, it will impact your overall experience. This explains why the takeaway reviews are so positive- no contact with the waitress. It is surprising that they have a member of staff who so visibly dislikes their role. I know it can be stressful, but you need to not let that bleed into your customer’s dining experience. The other waitress was lovely. The food itself was excellent - exactly what you want for a local Chinese. It was well cooked and came out promptly from the kitchen. I do recommend here, but would only give 5 stars if the service was fixed!

So disappointed this time. Had a lovely experience last time when visited with friends. Nothing too much trouble and owner engaging and attentive. This time was completely the opposite from start to finish. I have to say the food was lovely but not one of the staff even smiled let alone spoke unless they had to. I actually felt uncomfortable and like we were not welcome. To top it off instead of the usual £20 per person, was given the bill which came to £90 pounds plus!!! Was charged nearly £10 for a fruit juice and a coke that we hadn’t even had! I asked for the automatic £20 service charge to be removed to which the waitress leant across the table and snapped ‘WHY?’ I explained that if I left a tip it would be my choice how much. It seems it is £22 per person on a Sunday (no explanation) The extra items were removed with not even a sorry. The owner was chatting on his mobile the whole time we were there and visibly rolled his eyes when I queried the bill with the waitress in clear sight. Will not be returning 😞

Had been searching around for a new takeaway recently and thought we would try this as seen good things on facebook about it. We werent disappointed, easy to order, quick turnaround and most importantly tasty food which was demolished by the hoards of teenagers. Definitely better than our previous takeaway venue so will now make the switch!
