Eagle in Islington

We booked a table as we had heard great things about this place. We booked a table and despite arriving on time we had to wait over 15 minutes to get our table. No worries as we had ordered drinks so we were OK. When we got our table we then realised there is zero waiter service so you have to order at the bar. This could be fine but you can only order where people are ordering drinks and the place was very busy. If they had a specific area to order food only then this would sort this out but they don't and it feels like they are very short staffed. The server who bought our food was very nice but she was incredibly stressed. The place is just too busy for the small amount of staff to deal with. Chaotic is probably the best term. The atmosphere is great and the food is tasty, however never been to a gastro pub before where you cannot order any sides of veg or chips. A few tweaks here and there will make this place amazing but as it is we will not be visiting for food again. A drink yes no worries but the food element needs work.

Great spot for gastropub fare - the cod, the linguine, the pork and the veal were delicious. Service was good and the ambiance is nice. They don’t take reservations, which is a bit inconvenient as it’s very difficult to get a table and space is very limited, which made the experience a bit challenging for me. Still, it’s worth going to at least once for the food and the service.

Went to try their so called famous steak sandwich. Very disappointing. It was just a bun with dry lettuce and some not so flavorful steak. Super plain, not much flavor and very poor presentation. I feel like I’ve been robbed after paying 17 pounds for that! Not to mention they don’t do any type of sides. I don’t know any pub that doesn’t at least do fries.

A wonderful London institution. Very small downstairs, but the food speaks for itself. The steak sandwich is exactly what it should be. Nothing fancy, just well executed tasty cuisine. Prices reflect the ethos of the pub, however they are on the high side (£17 for steak sandwich), but the portions are excellent. 100% recommended

Always excellent, get there early, and go for the steak sandwich if you've not been before. Highly recommended

Very busy pub, with fresh food cooked in front of your very eyes. Lamb lasagne was excellent. Saffron cheesecake was amazing, possibly one of the best desserts in London.

We arrived shortly after the evening opening on a weekday and it was full already. Lucky for us, we waiting a short while for a table and it was so worth it. Food was spectacular and the atmosphere is what you would expect, a pub. Menu changes every day. I had the traditional steak sandwich known to The Eagle, two thumbs up!

Exquisite and welcoming, a great experience in London

Excellent food, great atmosphere, value for money. You can watch the chefs while they work, they definitely earn their money! it gets pretty busy so come early or be prepared to wait - also no problem as there's enough space to have a few drinks at the bar in the meantime

Food great (steak sandwich is a must) and a wide choice of beers. Can get very loud at times however, but that could be explained by the food and drink!

Another one for which I wish I could give 6 stars. The food is incredible, and freshly made in the open kitchen behind the counter. The staff is super friendly and the famous steak sandwich is to die for. I really enjoyed having lunch here, great vibe.

Limited menu maybe 9 options, including lamb, pork, tuna, bream and of course the steak sandwich. The last two I have shown. Many different lager/IPA/ale options. Staff were friendly, room was very busy. Order at the bar

The style feels like you're visiting your old aunt or something. I like the fact that the plates are all different and have an old style. The food is very nice and the portions generous for the price. And the Portuguese desserts were great! Edit: I haven't had the opportunity to visit in the last 4 years. Last weekend I was nearby so I stopped by and the food is still really good. 👌🏼

The Bifeana Steak Sandwich, is something to cherish! The first Gastropub and it has a reputation for the steak sandwich! It is a must! The perfect combination of salt and a little kick in the balance the flavours. Perfection!

It is one of the secret places in London. Good quality and food is great value for money.

Very, very authentic gastropub. It’s actually so authentic that you have to order at the bar, chase the waitress for little plates to share appetizers, chase to get more water or bread, risk being yelled at for pretty much any request, etc etc. Food (appetizers and mains) was ok. I’m not sure where the people raving about it eat usually. Desserts were not great. No espresso or americano, only black coffee.

Was a nice stay. The food was uncommon to me (Noodles with raisins and veggies). And I didn't like it that much, but that's personal preference. My friend loved it though.

Excellent atmosphere, food, drinks and service!

I’m not sure why we stopped going to The Eagle but I’m glad that it was recommended to me again about a year or so back. I’ve eaten here twice in the last 6 weeks and the food was wonderful both times. I will return. It’s amazing value for the quality of the food and the mark up on wine is not excessive. In fact it’s one of the few restaurants I’ve been to recently where a bottle of wine was under £25

Update your opening hours at Christmas, I beg you. Said it was open on the 30th (Saturday night), went across London to get there and it was closed.

Omg. Food was super salty. We told the waitress and she said it is what it is. Well. At least we expect a good service from the my Favourite pub: not sure if i will come back for a while. It was like over salted for whole menu. 🫢🤮

I visited early evening and the bar area was rammed and trying to have a conversation was impossible. So if you like a very lively energetic pub then the Eagle is for you.

Been enjoying food here for decades. Consistently good, busy yet always have space, no bookings, reasonable prices. Perfect.

The pasta was over cooked and tasted mushy today. They couldn’t offer me a replacement since they pre cook the pasta so all of it was over cooked. They did ask if I wanted something else but I’m vegetarian and the only other veg option was a burrata which was already ordered. They woman I spoke to was lovely and comped us 3 coffees and dessert but would have appreciated if they didn’t charge me for the pasta instead or comped the other two desserts we ordered as it was just 2 quid each. It doesn’t cost much to make sure your customers are happy and to be honest not sure I’ll go back even though I’m local.. the food prices at the Eagle have gone up (like everywhere else ) but we all found the quality has slipped (my friends thought their steak sandwich wasn’t as good as before)…

Chaotic and disorganised. Tiny bar space and noone server in order - people were pushing in right in front of bar staff. Seems impossible to get a table for food and the people that had one were mostly only drinking. Seems a bit confused about whether it is a pub or restaurant. A shame as the menu looked good.

Bit odd but I asked for tea. They couldn't do that but offered coffee. I was expecting a cheap cafetiere but I was given a wonderful mokka pot with a good coffee, milk and cute little cup.

Possibly my new favourite pub in London. Food is absolutely exceptional and interesting wine list. Seasonal black board menu all prepared in the open kitchen beside the bar. The swordfish was impeccable and the best cooked fish I have had in a long time. Stovetop coffee pots and cakes/pastel de natas an extra nice touch. Will definitely be back !

Chose pork belly. Big mistake as it was overcooked and dry.The sauce was drenched in salt. On complaining to the owner his response was 'It was a shame you didn't enjoy your meal'. No apology.

This place serves really great food - don't come for fancy plates, tables, etc but come for the food! All cooked behind the bar so one can see the chefs in action. Menu changes daily depending on meat/fish of the day - I had a very tasty partridge followed by a home-made pavlova recently. Prices very reasonable too

One of the best places I’ve been in a while. The food was amazing and well priced, the service was fantastic - especially the lovely lady that brought us our food. Four of us called in on a Friday lunchtime. We had two cod, one mackeral and a chowder which was all pretty good. The potato in the chowder could have done with dicing rather than big chunks . Service was pretty non existent and it was a queue up and order it yourself sort of place . Atmosphere was non existent. I could see why it was not that busy there as there are a whole load of better places on their doorstep.

A true gem of Farringdon. Menu is fresh, varied and always excellent value for money. One of London's MUST visit pubs.

Best gastropub in London. The quality of the food is always top-notch regardless of the menu or the chef of the day. The atmosphere is lively, the music is good. It tends to get really loud late at night and it's not exactly baby-friendly but not all pubs should be.

Nice pub but don’t bother if you’re vegetarian. A roasted vegetable is not a meal.

Prepare to be on your toes for a table ! We waited about 30 mins at the bar on a Wednesday evening but boy was it worth the wait… the pork belly is the stuff of dreams!! I had the steak sandwich which was also incredible but the pork is just something else. Better than the pig and butcher! Very crowded and hard to hear but worthwhile for the meal. My goodness I will think about this in the days to come!

Lovely, hearty food, and fabulous atmosphere.

Not as good as it's previous incarnation. I finally tried the signature steak sandwich and it was quite salty, the meat and bread were good. The pastas were lacking flavour and sauce. Had one with fresh sardines and one with the vongole. The vongole one was almost dry, was supposed to have a white wine sauce. Had a very good fish dish once. Overall very hit and miss, mostly miss. Even the free bread is quite hard work unless you have soup or some decent sauce to mop up. Will not go there too often, hopefully the food will improve to it's former glory.

Really can’t understand the hype over this place. We went here after hearing that the food was excellent, and ended up greatly disappointed. My roasted aubergine was swimming in oil, and my partner’s steak sandwich (the famous one) was honestly just bread and steak… nothing special, and bland. We got IPA, and it was flat, nutty, and not really enjoyable. Sorry — this place just wasn’t for us. This may be the first gastropub in London, but it’s not one of the good ones by a long shot in terms of food.

Great little pub in Farringdon. The food was a little hit and miss. The grilled aubergine was incredible. the steak sandwich was too salty and meat was chewy as it was overdone. The grilled fish was incredible. Overall, love what they are doing but would appreciate better execution. Rustic little kitchen makes this a promising venue I will visit again.

I have been there several times, I generally enjoy, although the place is worse every time I go: - The Steak sandwich: We ordered 4 in the table, I was quite unlucky compared to the others, I could only eat 50% of the meat in the sandwich(literally), not even the saw knife could cut through, I really tried, and even put the pieces in my mouth without cutting them, but they always go back to the plate in a meatball shape, totally impossible to chew or swallow, all my friends tried mine and had the same experience, so basically - We tried booking a table for 5 in two different days: I was told they do not take bookings for small groups, both days I had to wait for 45 minutes while 2 tables were empty with a reserved sign, the tables were for groups of 4. - The bartender takes the piss: 5 minutes at the bar to order while the bartenders were just chatting right and laughing in front of me, when the bartender finally started serving me he would just stop serving and start chatting again, joking here and there, laughing, which is totally fine, but dude... it literally took me 10 minutes to get my order while the bar was empty. - It is the loudest pub I have been to: your throat will be totally destroyed after being there for one hour as you can only communicate through shouting.

Relaxed atmosphere; excellent food. The onglet melted in your mouth. It did take a while to order at the bar and they could do with improving the acoustics (it was very loud, even on a Monday evening), but the food and vibe of The Eagle is fantastic overall. Lovely place for an elevated casual dinner. I loved the artwork and distressed atmosphere. It felt like an old school brasserie done right, complete with open kitchen.

Very friendly welcome from staff and chef, super to see the open kitchen behind the bar. The menu for the day had plenty of variety and was all delicious, will definitely head there from now on any time we're in the area

Love it for being a pub that serves food rather than a restaurant that poses as a pub - big difference! My local and also a great place to meet friends. Food is excellent and the menu changes regularly - often in the same evening.

A friend recommended this place and we had to go try the raves about steak sandwich. We arrived just after opening so no problem getting a table. The menu is on blackboards behind the bar. After starting with a pint and a spritz, our food came out quickly. The manchego and apple toasti was so good! A great portion of rosemary manchego, half and apple, and some toasted hearty bread. I loved it! The steak sandwich was as good as the reviews say. Great seasoning, tender, and a big sandwich! The people working were all very nice. I liked the wine list, lots of interesting options. I would definitely return to try more of the food and drinks.

Netter Pub, meistens absolut voll! Das Essen steht mit Kreide an der Wand, bis es leer ist, dann wird es weg gewischt und was neues hingeschrieben. Gute Auswahl an Essen, sehr lecker, alles typisch englisch. Auch einige (frisch gezapfte) Sorten Bier zur Auswahl.

Relaxing pub and unexpectedly good food👍 the tuna steak smell and taste really good. The signature steak sandwich is huge, the bread is crispy and warm, just yummy 🤤 definitely worth to come again ! Btw, the restaurant is dog friend so you can bring along your puppy to enjoy!

Nice looking busy English style pub with a decent food offering. The steak sandwich which I’d heard much about was ok (don’t bother asking for any sauce or you’ll get almost yelled at!!!) but the staff must hate working there…they all look so desperately unhappy and are a very unfriendly bunch! Don’t try and interact or be nice, you’ll be greeted with a stoney face.

We went here for a couple of glasses of wine after lunch at the Chop House .As we walked in we received a fairly frosty response to say they were closing in 15 mins.It turned out that they were closing for food and somewhat reluctantly they allowed us to order some wine. On the positive side there is an excellent wine selection .On the negative side-the staff.their attitude summed up why hospitality is struggling .One young lady serving at the bar looked as if she had been on an intensive lemon sucking course and was bordering on the hostile.The rest of the staff barely gave out a better vibe-i think we were interrupting their staff lunch and boy did they make that clear .

From the outside The Eagle is unprepossessing and inside it's really quite scruffy - but I guess that is part of its 'chaarm'. Luckily I arrived early so got a table inside as, despite it being a sunny day, I did not fancy the tables outside, right by a bus stop on Farringdon Road. I chose The Eagle (house) IPA which I really liked - so had asecond! The menu is small, which is, IMHO, great and it caters for carnivours and veggies. My friend & I both chose the pork chops which were "simply the best" and the beans and salsa went well with the chops. The service is quite off-hand and despite having to order and pay at the bar it was suggested that as th bill did not include servie I might like to add something to the charge - I did not as what service we got was pretty average. Would I go again - possibly - but its ranking on here as 6000th+ out of 15000+ restaurants in London is about right - so probably not, unless pork chops are on the menu!
