The pub interior is what you could describe as Olde Worlde...yep with some regulars having a drink by the bar and some customers take their dogs along too...however, the food and service I have always found to be excellent. Its a real 'rural type' pub and doesnt (I think) pretend to be anything else. The menu whilst not extensive is quite varied but the key thing for me is that the welcome is warm, the food is really good and the prices are more than reasonable.

Over the years, the pub has varied in how well you are treated and how good the food is. The pub itself is a good location, easy to park and not expensive. However, food could be much better, along with how you are welcomed, if not a local.

Don’t expect your meal to come in two minutes, it won’t because it is all freshly cooked and will be absolutely delicious. Few pubs have such fabulous food with excellent service in a traditional pub setting. Try the fish pie, it was mouthwatering and came with a selection of vegetables all cooked to perfection. My party expressed equal satisfaction with their meals. I haven’t been here for some years but won’t leave it long before I return.

I have been here on many occasions and it has always been good, not this time. It was chaotic, there were 3 dogs wandering around off lead and at least another 5 on lead!! It felt like I was on a park rather than a pub (and I’m a dog owner-not with me) The food was “ok” had to leave all of the potatoes as they were rock hard and inedible, when mentioned it to the harassed waitress she dismissively apologised. The gravy was like water and the rest bland. The meat was good, that was it!! This venue has been a halfway point for me and a friend for many years, it’s a shame, but it won’t be anymore.

Had a few friends calling on Sunday 22 of October we are new to the area ourselves so just randomly picked somewhere to eat Phoned on Saturday evening to book a table so glad we did the place was heaving All five of us chose the Sunday roast from what was a rather extensive menu The roast was splendid the portion size was good the vegetables served separately were cooked beautifully and the choice again was great carrots cauliflower cheese broccoli roast parsnips enough for the heartiest of diners The only downside to the meal was if anything the service to clear away after was non existent only for the fact the place was so busy If you love your Sunday dinners definitely come here but make a booking

I have visited twice in the oast 12 months and had the same experience on both occasions. Even after pre booking a table for 9 people , unless you are a local male propping up the bar you are completely ignored by the female member of the bar staff team. Such a shame because the food was excellent. We would happily have spent more money and stayed the evening but fir the quality if the bar service.

We have frequented this pub for over 30 years. It is characterful and unique. They have always provided a very good menu. However, I would advise anyone booking to insist on a table in the lower half of the pub as the upper level is more open plan and you will share your meal with everyone there. Just had my birthday meal and it was ok (not as good as usual) but felt like I was in someone else's house as they were wandering around all the time. I will go again but will only go if my reserved table is on the lower level. It ruined my birthday sadly.

Wow the return of the amazing Manager better known as Jockey after 12 years he is back with the fabulous Chef what a pair. We thought after a few poor meals we would return for one last time. To be met by Jockey at the door was a huge surprise and then the food. Back to old times , old favourites on the menu and the lovely ambience of the place. I expect in the next few weeks that one will have to book as it returns to its former glory. Wow the food was just as good as 12 years ago . Will be back tomorrow to celebrate my daughters birthday can’t wait.

Good food, friendly staff, fine selection of real ales in an authentic rustic ambience. Had a fine meal for two couples, thoroughly enjoyed, in a friendly atmosphere at a reasonable price. I have frequented this venue many times both for pleasant meals and in particular for the convivial Monday quiz night. With a long lifetime's experience to educate my palate, I can honestly say the chips here are sublime,.. probably the best I've ever tasted! I was puzzled to find a rather vitriolic review written by someone who had a bad day here thirteen years ago has still been left on the internet. I would hope that it hasn't made anyone miss out on what I have always found to be a very worthwhile venue that I am happy to recommend.

I remember the Eagle and Child 15 years ago, it was terrific. It felt light, quirky, clean, refined and was somewhere you wanted to take your family. It was a bit posh, but not unwelcoming, the locals could still lean against the bar and sip on a Thwaites whilst the la-di-da's had their spritzers and poached salmon. Now it feels like life has moved on, and the Eagle and Child stayed in 1998, refusing to leave as if bolted to one of the fridge piled out the back. From the outside there are the irritating and desperate chalkboards with fluorescent colours which normally serve as a warning sign that there may be trouble ahead, but we braved it and when in. Once inside however things do improve slightly. There are curious pictures on the walls of maps of old county boundaries, aristocrats riding around with trumpets and top hats - that sort of thing. The pictures however have understandably stood the test of time (as pictures do (see the Louvre/Tate etc)), the carpets, wallpaper, ceiling have not (see Changing Rooms/Country House makeover etc).Unfortunately I needed to use the toilet, I wish I hadn't bothered. I don't mind peeing in a bush as much as the next man, however when you're charged over £16 for a main course you expect a fresher feel in the john. The toilets felt so tired I almost fell asleep in a weary heap of disappointment before I could even get to the sink to wash my little hands. The toilets were clean, and no doubt the cleaning staff are excellent, but surely a painter and decorator can put up some wallpaper with some chic (yes chic not chick) ducks flying around, a few new urinals wouldn't go amiss. The menu is terrifying. When you consider the place now looks like a Toby Carvery how on earth it thinks it can sell you this sort of thing is quite incredible. We didn't bother eating more than a little starter (which was not bad) as I'd rather buy a sandwich from the deli next door and sit in a field staring at cattle. The staff were very helpful I must say, quite charming really. I hope the owner is alive and well and just on a long holiday somewhere. Perhaps he/she needs to come back to England and set eyes on the Eagle and Child. It's tired. Like an infant wandering around in a dark bucolic tragedy and in desperate need of saving.

Having read mixed reviews of The Eagle and Child, some of the poorer ones obviously from people who had a preference to the previous landlord, we decided to go with an open mind. Our first impression of the pub as we drove into Bispham Green was very good, it looks every inch what you would expect of a village pub. We found our way into the car park which is well hidden at the back so it does not detract from the pleasant village vista at the front. On entering the pub from the rear, we were greeted at the bar by several staff members including the new (May 2015) landlord. Our greeting was friendly and warm and we were lead to a table by the landlord. We passed through a door into a room a little distance from the bar area. We asked for another table, for no other reason than at the time apart from one other group of diners, the room was empty and we wanted more atmosphere. However, in retrospect the reason for this was it was still relatively early (7.00pm) and I noticed later the room was full and had plenty of people enjoying their evening. Our second table was all we wanted of a country pub, a snug little side room off the bar. Cosy settles, a fireplace and dried hops hanging from the ceiling. The service was excellent, the only time I had to go to the bar was to choose from the very good selection of real ales and that was then brought to our table for us. I am a dedicated real ale drinker and the beer was kept and served in first class condition. The menu is extensive with some very different choices and the only problem we had was making a decision. For starters my wife choose oils and bread and I had pigs cheek fritter. Main course was sirloin steak for Jan, cooked rare and for me North Sea halibut with Cornish crab. All was cooked to perfection and we followed this with some delicious puddings. At just over £80 including drinks I consider this very good value for the quality of the food served and provided. If you are a two for ten pounds merchant the Eagle and Child is not for you but if you appreciate fine dining and good drink in unique surroundings it is well worth a visit, we certainly thought so. As we left I went around the front to take in one last look at the pub. The landlord was collecting glasses from the outside tables. I had a brief conversation with him and he talked of his plans and the difficulties of pleasing some of the people who were familiar with the previous management. We can only say that on our experience we found some of the reviews from these people to be unfair, I guess some people just don't like change. We say go and make your own mind up.

I've been eating at this pub for years and I would say for the last 2 years at least I don't know why I keep going back. The only thing that is consistent is the terrible food........ Even the locals have left to now move to other pubs in Parbold. It's still overpriced, menu is very very limited and as for the toilets and decor it's not changed in years. The back room too has damp walls, holes in the roof ( where I know upstairs toilets are located) and it's now very tired indeed. It's a shame because I used to love it but I'm now I hate to say it but it's a dump. I'm giving up trying and moving on!!!

We have eaten at this restaurant on numerous occasions and have always loved it. The manager & staff were lovely and very friendly and efficient . Sadly a new manager has taken over & to be quite honest he would be more at home behind a doctors reception desk. No interaction with us or anybody else and the new staff he has brought in are like zombies. No smiles no chat just the absolute minimum in conversation. The food was fine although the roast lamb was poor. Not the welcoming country pub it was

After being very impressed with this lovely country local that we have frequented for the last ten years and seen its popularity and quality of food and service go from good to bad and back to very bad recently under the new management from April of this year (2015)onwards, Jamie the previous manager had it in a nutshell, running a perfectly run friendly country pub and restaurant, but alas he was too good and unfortunately moved on after being headhunted(no wonder) he was good !We had already booked for Xmas 2015 ,but under the present management ,we have decided to go elsewhere. This is very unfortunate as Xmas 2014 was absolutely brilliant ,food atmosphere and hospitality from fantastic staff,,,,,,,,,disappointed. John and sue Lathom

My wife & I visited the Eagle & Child on Wed 22nd July with a friend, greeted with the usual warm friendly welcome. It's the kind of village pub you would like as your local. The service was a little slow, but acceptable when the food is freshly cooked. The excellent range and quality of the cask beers helped to keep us going. The food was again top quality and plentiful, well worth the wait, I had steak & mushroom pie with suet crust, tender beef with lashings of thick gravy. Our friend had 10oz rump steak which was cooked perfectly as requested. The down side though was with my wife's meal, not the quality, but the lack of menu choice. My wife is vegetarian, there was 2 vegetarian starters both cheese based, and 4 vegetarian main courses, 3 of which were cheese based, the remaining option, which she selected was a bean burger, enjoyable but unimaginative. This has never happened on our previous visits and was probably an over site by the chef.It won't prevent us going again.

I returned to the eagle and child last night with a couple of friends. The cod loin was to die for my friend had sea bass which again was delisious and the men enthused over the veal cutlets. It may be a bit pricey but what people need to know is that everything is made from scratch not jars etc and fresh produce and man hours make it worth the price. Can't wait to go back.

Arrived in the car park at 8.30 walked in the back entrance to where three members of staff were stood chatting. Asked if we could have a table for two? One member of staff looked at her watch and said no, we finish serving at 8.30 it is now 8.35!! The pub wasn't overly busy, food was still coming out of the kitchen. We walked back to the car - both car and phone said 8.33! I realise you have to have a cut off point but when it is a minute or two, I think it was more of 'couldn't be bothered' attitude. Anyway managed to get to the Ship Inn before they stopped serving food and had a great meal.

Popped in on spec mid afternoon , nice friendly welcome and prompt service. The food was great . Not a hint of some of the generic stuff that can sometimes be served elsewhere , oh and a great choice of beers .All in all I would heartily recommend it.

A good time had by all some great ales and ciders ,a big thank you to all Jamie and all the staff who worked so hard to keep this going over the last 4 days . Some good entertainment the only one negative I don't know why the DJ on a Sunday the last night has to turn the whole tent into a mad rave after 6pm, music very loud , may I suggest something different for next year like more entertainment through out the day.

Three of us for midweek lunch. We had to go up several steep steps with a disabled person as only a large table available in the bar area. We were told we could have a very small table for two with an added chair! When we went to the higher level we were the only ones up there in an area of 10? tables. With a disabled person one would expect more consideration. The food was OK for two of the party, one was a bit disappointed with the 'salad' which had very little vegetable content. No sugar brought with coffee, had to request it twice before it arrived - but no apology given.

Decided to give a friends 2 week old baby her first experience of the Eagle and Child. Whilst she slept through the whole affair, we had another first class dining experience. Asparagus ravioli with queenie scallops and asparagus shavings was a delicious and light starter, but my main course of goosnargh duck was a work of art, served with fondant potato, roast plums and brocolli with a paper thin slice of toast with a liver pâté. My dining companions waxed lyrical about their main courses of steak and goosnargh chicken. Service was as friendly as ever and the meal was reasonably priced. Definitely worth making the journey from Liverpool to dine here.

We like to go out for lunch on a Sunday and we were recommended to go here by a friend. Told a little pricey but good food. Place was just our cup of tea a local pub that does good food. A number of people came for a drink with their dogs a very relaxed atmosphere. The staff were helpful and friendly. The food was good, steak was excellent the pate was maybe a shop bought in taste to be critical. It was as we were told good food and we will not hesitate to pass that recommendation on. Well worth a visit but if you are going out your way book they might be full.

Living close by I am lucky enough to be able to visit the Eagle and Child for a quick lunch with friends or a weekend get together. However after my most recent visits I am tempted to avoid it in future. One male member of the bar staff can only be described as down right rude....his attitude and comments are so surprising that last week my colleagues and I did walk out. I understand he may be new to the team but a smile and attentiveness costs nothing. We have stood at the bar on several occasions only to be ignored and on one visit he actually told us that the pub doesn't serve lunch! They do of course....not sure of his motives that day!. I must also agree with other reviews that the manager has an unfortunate familiar approach which can be uncomfortable to watch! Its such a shame as the food is tasty and the young female waitress an absolute delight and so helpful! Sort it out and make the Eagle the talk of the village for all the right reasons!

How wrong can one get a roast beef dinner? After waiting Nearly 40 minutes (which I don't normally mind for good, fresh home cooked food), I found myself confronted with a roast dinner minus potatoes. Waited another while, thinking potatoes may come separately, but then realised having looked at other peoples plates that ours had in fact been forgotten. Mentioned the issue to a passing waitress who then proceeded to bring 6 of the smallest most anaemic looking roasties I have ever seen. I actually thought they were new potatoes at first glance! The place did not seem particularly busy, I have certainly seen it busier, but 1 lady waited over an hour for 2 kids meals and fish& chips. I complained about our potatoes and the waitress just said "oh, ok" and took our plates without the courtesy of an apology. I rarely complain, having worked in the industry myself and therefore know how tough it could be, but I was so disappointed with the meal and general lack of concern shown by the member of staff in question that I did complain again to someone else. She was most apologetic and did discount the bill, which was unexpected but appreciated.

Visited many times over the years, if you enjoy local seasonal food then this is for you. Lots of local ales to choose from and the food is excellent if a little pricey, however you get what you pay for.Decor is old fashioned country pub, uneven floors, flags and wooden tables , hunting prints, perfect.

Called in for lunch on Friday. No reservation needed. Excellent range of real ales. I had Silver Tally which was well kept (not too cold). Steak and mushroom pie was a stew with a crust. Very well made though with good beef and no fat. Too much salt in it for my liking. My better half had fish and chips which she declared to be excellent. Service was spot on and the general atmosphere was comfortable and convivial. The menu was a bit difficult to read (they need a better printer) but had an interesting if not eclectic mix of dishes prompting me to consider going back in the evening one day. The beer festival at the beginning of May is definitely worth a visit.

Visited on a Sunday evening with friends and impressed by the quality of the food. In a lively, friendly atmosphere, we were well looked after by attentive staff. The menu was imaginative and offered good selection. The food was well presented and well prepared. The house wine however was expensive making the cost per head somewhat unattractive for a country pub.

Three of us had a Christmas eve meal at the Eagle and Child. We'd booked for 7:30 but we're told we would have to order quickly as the restaurant was closing. If we'd been told this when we had booked we would have made it 7:00. As it turned out, apart from ordering quickly we didn't feel rushed at all! The service was very good from all staff. We all enjoyed our starters and two of us had blade of beef for our main course which was great. The vegetarian risotto was however "nothing special". Deserts, similarly received a mixture of "great" and "OK". It certainly isn't cheap for a gastro pub but, in general, it is worth it. We will be back.

I went to a 60th celebration meal for 40 people. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The food was delicious and generous portions. The menu we were offered to choose from was excellent and I would've happily have chosen any one of the dishes on offer. I had delicious brown shrimps as a starter, followed by Goosnargh duck breast cooked to perfection. My dessert was a fruit jelly with local ice cream. Although it took 45 minutes to get there, it was worth journey and I will return.

Took my mum here for some lunch as she don't mind it. We ordered food along with two small chips. The chips came and they were cold so we mentioned it to one of the staff who took them and walked off then returned with one bowl of chips and told us to share and walked off. I couldn't be bothered arguing the toss with her as everything seemed too much for her and she didn't want to go out of her way for anyone not even a smile guess that was to much too

Passing through Ormskirk at lunchtime and saw Toby Carvery, pulled in and found the Fiveways. We both had the Carvery which was an excellent choice of Lamb, Turkey, Gammon or Beef. We both had Turkey and Beef the accompanying vegetables were excellent and even though stood on a hot plate were not dried up. The place is spotlessly clean the toilets smelt fresh and clean. One of the best Cavey's we have had., and the price was very reasonable @£15.48 for two
