Fabulous menu which more than met expectations. My wife & I enjoyed three courses plus coffee, having only really planned to go in for one plate of food - every one a winner. I was full-to-bursting by the time we left! Great selection of ales. Excellent service by staff who really looked like they enjoyed their jobs, and a lovely, relaxed yet sociable and friendly atmosphere in the pub. Easy to park at lunchtime on Saturday. Dog-friendly - ask for a table in the room by the kitchen for minimum doggie distractions. Amazing value for money too! Next time we are in the area, we will book again without hesitation.

Food and service excellent, now the issue. Hadn’t booked, table for 2 provided promptly, all going well until coach pulls up that were clearly on a pub crawl. All in good spirits but a handful stood right next to our table, very loud and one using bad language. I asked if they knew they were going to visit. They did so I believe I should have been warned. Really did ruin what could have been a great experience. Nothing offered as an apology, Didn’t she seem to have anyone in charge who had any power. Won’t be visiting again.

The perfect English country pub. Good selection of real ales, excellent food (not overpriced), log fire, dimmed lighting, an interior which has not been ruined by a shiny designer makeover, a motley gathering of antique furniture, old prints on the walls, no music, no machines, lovely gardens, easy parking, and a farm shop in the yard. If you crave the arcadian charm of yesteryear, this is your place.

We went on a busy Christmas holiday Monday Lunch. The place was booming and Had a lovely bright atmosphere put out by the staff. It was my work Christmas lunch and we had a wonderful time. The food was amazing, recommended the steak pie and the shepherds pie by the waitress and it was well worth it. The wait for the food even though it was very busy was reasonable for both starters and mian meals and the staff were very attentive. We highly recommend this sweet country pub with its lovely array of food and beers it has a lot of potential to be a good local for drinkers and eaters in the future.

My wife booked a table here for my birthday. She specified we would like the table next to the fire place at the end of the bar which was clarified by the booking staff. However when we arrived, the table was occupied, for which they apologised (little alarm bells began to chime). We were annoyed but didn't wish to make a fuss so chose another table. In summary, the service was so slow we were there for over three hours. Two tables next to ours also complained about the shoddy service. One poor guy, with his young daughter were forgotten about completely and they eventually left! We used to love it here and have been going for years but such is the decline in both service and food, we won't be returning. The gaps between courses were so long, I managed to write a novel about the experience! Avoid.

A truly fantastic representation of an old English pub, where tradition blends with modern touches in a near perfect way. Tucked in the centre of a small village, this pub is a cosy spot for lunch or dinner, with beautiful ornate decoration and a fantastic log fire that welcomes you in on a cold day. The only downside is the toilets which are a bit too tired for my liking, but not a big deal if you don't have kids. The food was fabulous, which was a surprise given the huge variety of options available across the 3 or 4 menus we were given. It was pricey for a pub, but the quality was well above that of an average pub, so I'd say it was reasonable. Staff were very friendly and made a big fuss of our kids which was lovely. Highchairs available, as well as free parking. I've found my new favourite pub!

Extremely poor service (50 minutes from seating on time for our table until starters finally came). Similar story for the mains. Recently dropped in on our way back from a bank holiday family walk with the kids and dog and wow!! This is my new favourite place to eat. Such a beautiful, quaint place. Firstly met and served by who I have to say, were the best staff I’ve ever come across in a pub/restaurant. My husband and I love to eat out, with or without the children but these guys surpassed any service we have had before. So friendly, knowledgeable and made us feel like nothing was a problem. The food was also the best we have eaten in a pub, ever! I cannot rate it highly enough. As a family of 5 with a dog, we sometimes have to eat and run but here we were made to feel so welcome and it was so lovely we didn’t want to leave! Massive shout out to the staff (I didn’t get their names) but the service from them was off the scale. We can’t wait to visit again. Thank you for a lovely lovely time.

Lovely pub and atmosphere. Some staff seemed a little rude/abrupt when asking about baby changing facilities. Had CousCous Arancini, Beef Roast Dinner and Bakewell Tart. The starter and desert were tasty but the roast was quite underwhelming. Very poor range of vegetarian options which left one person having garlic mushrooms and a side of chips.

We've just eaten here again, probably our 10th visit over the past 5 years. As ever a great menu and with the specials menu adding several more options, more than enough choice for anyone. A shared garlic ciabatta bread, followed by mains and desserts each (mine washed down with a pint of draft (still) cider and a coffee................delicious meal, happily full, all great!

Don’t expect your meal to come in two minutes, it won’t because it is all freshly cooked and will be absolutely delicious. Few pubs have such fabulous food with excellent service in a traditional pub setting. Try the fish pie, it was mouthwatering and came with a selection of vegetables all cooked to perfection. We spontaneously decided to stop here for a drink one evening and were pleasantly surprised by the friendly atmosphere, attentive staff that served us, and quality of food. We ordered a selection of things from the menu including; Smokies 5/5 - Wow, delicious, but could've done with some more bread. Calamari 4/5 - Good but not the best I've had, room for improvement, but certainly not bad. Tasty, well cooked, light batter, no complaints. Garlic Ciabatta 4/5 - Good, Great paired with Smokies, could've been a bit more toasted but then again I could have asked for it. Chips 4.5/5 - Really good, can't give a 5 as they're not triple cooked in Wagyu beef dripping. But as far as big chunky chips go, be hard to find better. Overall a cracking country pub, good food, friendly locals and staff, dog friendly too. Will go again.

Overall - this is a "do not go" for me. Unfortunately I have to give this one star. We may have caught them on a very bad day, but here was the awful, beyond ridiculous experience. Arrived about 12:30 for lunch. St around for 10 min with NO one around. Place is empty. Got up to leave, someone appears who thinks we just walked in, and offers us a table with menus. Very friendly, all seemed fine. Says will be back in a minute for order and drinks. 10 min later, we're still sitting unserved and completely alone. At this point a courier arrives, the waiter appears for them, has a 5 min chat, ignores us, then starts cleaning a table which hasn't been used. 5 min later, laughing at the ignorance, we interrupt and ask for our order to be taken, no apologies from them, but all is friendly and takes our drinks only order. The waiter then disappears for another 10 min. So we're sitting there waiting for two simple drinks when another customer walks in. They too sit there waiting for a full 5 minutes for some one to appear. A waiter then serves them after they badgered them, and they get their drinks. After which the staff ignore us again. After 45 min of sitting around and waiting for even 2 simple drinks which never came we've had enough. We assume it will be another hour before we get food, so we leave, but once again we had to wait 5 min just for someone to appear to tell them we were going. Add to that, The place itself was shabby, dirty and desperately in need of a refurb, with the wall near me properly peeling and falling away. The menu was very expensive for the fairly typical pub food on offer. In short, The eagle and child was utterly deserted of customers for a reason - it's rubbish in everyway. After leaving, we tried other pubs and cafes right nearby, and couldn't get in as they were all full. That says enough -> Other places full, eagle and child literally empty.

Gorgeous beer garden by a canal. You can enjoy the long boats sailing past and the ducks when the weather is good.
