Dyls in York

We arrived at 5:30pm and they let us order without informing us that they're about to close. 20 minutes later they asked us to leave 🤷‍♀️ what a waste of money!

Sat outside next to the canal. Food was reasonably priced, and the staff were pleasant and were very hospitable.

Beautiful view and very nice place to have a cup of coffee, the staff were great and helpful, definitely worth the visit. I would love to go back again

Stopped off for tea and cake, great place to watch people. Menu and food going out looked amazing.

Has this place been renamed recently? What I saw on the plate was definitely not what I've seen in the reviews. Fairly generic food for a medium price. Hot chocolate was super watery. Two girls on the table next to me were also not impressed and left half their ciabatta behind.

Love this place. Quite possibly the cafe with the most stunning view in York. Right on the river with the boats going by. Nice lunches and sandwiches available, some toasted. Very friendly service. Some lovely walks nearby in the park and down the river. Coffee is nice but could do with being a little stronger.

Such a cute place! They didnt sell hot drinks when i came in the afternoon which was a bummer bc me and my friend just wanted hot coco. Stairs were scary to walk down after a few drinks especially when people were queuing for toilets and taking up half of the narrow stairs. With the plants, light and music would still recommend as a Cozy place for drinks :)

We visited this beautiful cafe twice. The servers are very welcoming, warm and cordial. The café has an extensive menu! A little extra for the calzones (perfectly crispy dough) and for the wild berry cider (light, subtle and fresh). It’s a must-have!!!

Dyls is the absolute most aesthetic coffee shop I have ever seen, and never disappoints. They also do 20% student discount on Wednesdays !

It's not the best experience, to be honest. It's a touch expensive for what we had, the service was awful, it wasn't busy, and they ran out of some options 😴

I love this place and it’s always our first stop when visiting York ,staff are always friendly and the coffee is great . Revisited today I know times are hard but £5.80 for a mocha is mad , will by pass next time and go into town centre sorry

The first time I went to York (as an adult - not including school trips), I went to Dyls. It was 7 o'clock on an especially horrendous night in November/December. I'd jumped off the train and walked south from the station towards Mickelgate. I then crossed over to Nunnery Lane and marched towards Skeldergate Bridge. It was here that I was supposed to meet a friend, but it was pouring with rain. So naturally, I ducked into the first doorway that I could find along the bridge. This happened to be Dyls. And now I make it my first stop whenever I'm in York. It's hard to find a café with a character that compares to that of Dyls Café Bar. The pokey shop is set into a medieval tower on the east side of Skeldergate Bridge. It spans three floors, with a spiral staircase and a terrace overlooking the Ouse. The interior is a unique blend of medieval stonework and art nouveau décor. But the real attraction is what they serve... Smooth, yet warming coffee is served from the tiny counter on the ground floor. The small food menu is filled with mouth-watering bites. I would recommend: 1) The Bacon Sandwich - This is unquestionably the best bacon butty I've ever had. 2) The Sausage Sandwich - Remember to ask for their burnt onion marmalade. 3) Beans on Toast - It's dotted with chorizo and cream cheese, and it's divine. They also serve a variety of toasties with a bowl of chips covered in chip spice. If you find yourself passing by, I highly recommend that you give them a visit.

I felt like Rapunzel in the tower……and I’m not even gay.

I was absolutely amazed at the quantity of crisp, tasty bacon piled into my ciabatta, and we took our time to enjoy eating and drinking delicious coffee while settled into one of the various cosy rooms, each of them individually designed and fitted to allow maximum space, the whole simply full of clever decorative touches so it was comfortable, quaint and interesting without appearing 'too crowded'. We will undoubtedly return to this friendly cafe-bar whenever we are within reach, and we highly recommend it. A delightful experience to eat and drink here, well done to all involved (don't change a thing.....), thank you!

Dropped In for a pint, coffee and cake while heading back to our hotel... Great vibe-a must if passing, or just fancy a change when visiting the area! We sat in the tower... sorted💯

Myself and a friend attended on Saturday evening and unfortunately we didn't receive very good service. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a female waitress that didn't seem very interested. We asked if there was any seats upstairs and the request wasn't greeted with any real energy. I was put off but decided to give the benefit of the doubt and sit outside. We made them aware and they said it's table service. Well in this instance, table service was a hole other meaning haha. We took our seats outside and it seemed to take the staff an age to come take our order. Eventually a young lady came out, took the order. Upon bringing the order to us, the member of staff got to the table and just dropped the tray, ofcourse the drinks spilling all over the table. I was incredibly embarrassed and I'm sure she was. She apologised, albeit insincerely. Just before she dropped the order, I noticed the beer I'd asked for was poured very poorly with half of it just froth. So in a way, it's a god send that I didn't have the chance to drink it. She went back inside and we followed as my friend seemed interested in sitting inside but I was understandably angry and we abruptly left. With regards to the food, from the photos people have shared, I looks wonderful and I will be back to try it but I was left disappointed on Saturday evening.

Worth every penny. Had the Yorkshire ham and cheese toastie. To say I’d travel to York just for one of these toasties I’m not lying! The atmosphere was beautiful by the river. The waitress was so friendly, attentive and polite. Beautiful place with beautiful food and people.

I have mixed feelings, the food and location are excellent, but the service was really slow. The soup was very nice.

Enthusiastic staff ,drinks came fairly quick ,food had to ask after waiting 30 mins for bacon sandwich, slightly pricey .this could be a very nice cafe come bar .If could handle food order better and not soaking in oil from coiked bacon. Get your act together guys.

A wonderful place, the girl who served us yesterday had such an amazing energy, the place is beautiful, great coffee and that bacon sandwich....

My partner and I were visiting York and noticed this cafe on a stroll so we decided to come the next day as a treat after visiting the Museum. We were greeted by an incredibly friendly man who sat us down quickly and was very enthusiastic and attentive. We ordered an americano, hazelnut latte and the pistachio and orange brownie. WOW! This was the best coffee I have ever had and the brownie was so decadent. We both felt incredibly relaxed during our visit and the decor was vibrant and interesting to look at. We are both saddened that we are not residents of York because this would have easily become our go-to spot on a cold rainy day.

Dyls was a delightful find during our day in York. We sat outside in the very pleasant covered outdoor area, right next to the river as we had our dog with us. Menu really good. Inside has to be seen, several floors with quirky little areas to sit and dog friendly throughout. Look forward to returning when we're back in York

Loved Dyls...we sat outside under a canopy with an outdoor heater on in the rain, next to the river...we drank summer cider which tasted beautiful. Excellent location and atmosphere. I only went inside to use the loo which was up a winding staircase. Such a beautiful place.

It's a lovely place, really nice food and drink and view of the river but the menu is very confusing. So they us "V" for Vegan but "VG" for vegetarian I have never seen that before so was a close call. I would go back as a beautiful place but anyone wanting vegan food will think "VG" is for them.

We met for a coffee with my friend and we really enjoyed the coffee and desserts. There is a nice relaxed atmosphere next to the river and park.

I love the ambience of this little spot, right by the river surrounded by cute little glowing lights :) To order you have to go up stairs, so it's not very accessible for those with disabilities, however there is a QR code on their menus so perhaps you can order and pay through that. There were people with puppies there which was cute. 4 stars rather than 5 as it's a bit of a bind having to walk up to order rather than the staff take your order and we waited around 12 minutes before they brought the coffee and coke which felt like a real long time! Otherwise, lovely!

Really nice atmosphere sat outside on a sunny afternoon. I loved that this was filled with mixed ages and demographics. However, it is quite expensive, not so where to go often. Would love to see non alcoholic options and a wider variety of flavours in the cocktails. (The interior was lovely, very cute, though you could tell the decorations haven’t been cleaned since they were put up)

The best since margarita I have ever had. And I've had plenty.

We had an outside lunch here, but if you ever do that, don't forget to have a look at the inside because how it looked there was a pleasant surprise. The lunch we had was really good and the staff was friendly.

Limited inside seating, so the good weather today helped us to enjoy our visit. Service was prompt, polite and friendly. Coffee was excellent and the almond croissants the best we've ever had, anywhere.

A really cute spot on the river for a drink. Right off the city wall walk, so a perfect rest spot.

The young waitstaff here are brilliant. So much good humour and energy. I love coming here with the dogs as they’re treated like valued guests as well.

Called in for Cappuccino and Hot Chocolate. The cappuccino was luke warm and when I asked for sugar, the waiter said I will get it. Never came back.

I don’t normally go out of my way to write reviews but felt this place needed to be shouted about. The menu has items you wouldn’t find anywhere else and they’re executed so well the pizza wraps were delicious and I’m so sad we were only in York for one day and had to leave not knowing when I’d be eating that dish again. Even the fries were top notch. Perfect place to stop when walking the wall with gorgeous views of the river. My only pointers of constructive criticisms would be; don’t use napkins under the food maybe swap for greasproof paper the napkin gets stuck to the food. Also the plates are a little small for the quantity of food so everything was a little squashed and you have to eat through the fries to get to the wrap- not an issue just a thought. But I really enjoyed my lunch there the food was incredible

This is an idyllic and quirky place on a lovely riverside location. The menu after 2pm is quite limited so ordered pulled pork calzone (OK) and vegetable calzone (undercooked and a bit sour-tasting). Service was very friendly but slow and chaotic with multiple tables being given the wrong order. I hope it’s not always like this as it has real charm and such a nice setting:

My husband and i just stopped for a drink after going on a river cruise. The owner saw that the cup I was drinking out of was chipped, asked if I wanted a new cup, I refused, he came back with a caramel shortbread as an apology. My favourite cake, it just happened to be my birthday too. Fantastic service.

Best eggs on toast ever! The herbed yogurt was plentiful, the eggs fresh, the sourdough bread tasty as heck. Washed down with a flavour packed chai latte and that set me up for a straight 6 hour exploration of the city before I needed to refuel again! Beautiful setting, a little romantic even. Many very happy dogs sat with owners and a fabulous, quirky interior which is cosy and comfortable. Thankfully I did not see the cake and pastry selection until we were leaving!!! My best advice is go on an empty stomach and save space for two courses because the food really is that good.

Really couldn't fault this quirky little place overlooking the river in York. Loved all the plants everywhere inside the building. Staff were excellent and couldn't have worked harder. Drinks and food were great!

Cute cafe. It's in a tower part of one of the old bridges of York crossing the River Ouse. The staff are absolutely wonderful. It has some indoor seating and plenty of outdoor seating with enough rain/sun cover, too. The service is fast, food is really nice with nice vegetarian options! (Might have vegan, can't remember). The staff are also super friendly. Shout-out to Alice, Ruby, and Tom! It also looks on to the river so if you want to be out on a sunny day watching city cruise boats go back and forth on the water or watch people walk along the river then this is the cafe to be at.

It must be one of the cutest little spaces in all of England. We had the top room in the tower which really looks magical 🧙‍♀️. Coffee and cake are not cheap but of very high quality.

Best festive sandwich I’ve ever had! Decor super interesting, would recommend.

£37.40 for two cheese toasties and two coffees. 45 minute wait despite not being particularly busy. Hot chocolate served cold and then (once returned) served cold a second time. Toasties, and accompanying chips, also cold and too sweet.

Just ran in to avoid heavy rain shower, great with our dog, served lovely coffee and decaffeinated as well, great almond croissant, definitely recommended

I’ve been going to Dyls since before the pandemic, the location, food and coffee cannot be faulted which is why I continue to go back, but the service is getting so increasingly horrendous that’s it’s pushed me to leave this review and to think twice about whether I have the tolerance to try and go back again. Everyone is friendly enough but each time I go it’s something and I’ve had to start walking out. On a whim they ll stop serving coffee at random times of the day, often get orders wrong and decide to stop serving food hours before its say so on the menu (after being handed a food menu and seated) or that food will take up to an hour sometimes even when it’s not very busy and even though they only do toasties and pre made food. Highly recommend if you happen to have the patience for things to be not as straight forward as you’d expect.

Nice comfy setting, friendly staff, coffee was nice. However, my pastry didn't taste fresh and was a bit hard.
