I popped into the tea room on Sunday with my 2 dogs after a walk over the deer park, the man working was very welcoming and said we accept dogs, I asked for a cappacino and he realised this was going to be challenging for me to take my coffee into the garden with the two dogs on leads, he kindly said I’ll take your coffee to the garden for you and also offered to wipe the slightly wet seat for me, he was every welcoming and coffee was perfect a lovely peaceful start to my Sunday sitting with my dogs in the beautifully kept garden in lovely surroundings - thank you!

This cafe is a bit out of the way but in a lovely location next to the water. They were having trouble with the till when we arrived so the queues built up quite a bit. Service wasn't the quickest in any case. Our cheese scones were ok but nothing special. Tea was good, coffee was ok. Staff were friendly.

Stepping into the National Trust Dunster tea room, my visit was infused with a sense of nostalgia, as my wife had been a dedicated member of the staff in the years before the establishment’s much-anticipated upgrade. Fond memories of impeccable service, fresh delicacies, and genuine smiles had set a high standard for this return. The first noticeable change was the substantial investment in the new building. However, on a bustling Saturday at midday, the vast space felt eerily deserted, a stark contrast to the thriving hub of activity one might expect. With four staff members and only a handful of patrons, the grandeur of the upgraded setting seemed incongruent with the sparse attendance. A critical issue emerged at the till, where the prepping area shared space with the point of service. This impractical arrangement led to a frustrating 10-minute wait, a bottleneck exacerbated by the staff’s evident efforts. While not entirely their fault, the design flaw hindered the flow of service, leaving an impression of inefficiency. Culinary disappointments followed, starting with a generously sized pot of tea containing only two teabags. The result was a weak, insipid brew resembling hot brown water, a departure from the robust flavors of the past. The letdown continued with coffee walnut slices—dense, flavorless cakes that seemed store-bought, far from the bespoke offerings of yesteryears. The financial sting came with the bill totaling £14, an exorbitant price for what felt like hot water and a slice of mundane cake. The perceived value for money was woefully absent, intensifying the sense of having been shortchanged. Adding to the disappointment were observations of servers placing milk jugs directly into teacups, an unorthodox practice at odds with expected standards of hygiene. Furthermore, the sight of servers putting their fingers inside teacups when retrieving them from the cupboard raised concerns about cleanliness and professionalism. In conclusion, this visit to the National Trust Dunster tea room was a far cry from the warm and inviting haven it once represented. The grandeur of the present clashed with the emptiness, logistical challenges, lackluster culinary offerings, and lapses in hygiene, leaving me with a profound sense of disappointment and no eagerness to return anytime soon.

Dreadful experience went with hubby and friend. I asked for cheese scone I got a stale red chilli scone and a piece of cheese that had seen better days. I asked a staf member for some butter and she begrudgingly gave me some. On leaving I spoke to the young girl on till and said I could not eat the scone as was far too hot as in chilli hot and maybe she should tell people that request a cheese scone that they are so spicy. I had no apology or any kind of response. All in all the experience was not a good one. The piece of shortbread my husband had was just cheap shop bought rubbish. Such a shame as in a beautiful position and could have been a nice visit. Will not go again

This is such a lovely and relatively secluded Tea Garden, very pretty and easily accessible a little way outside the village even if you're not visiting the Water Mill or walking through the gardens up to the Castle. The queuing system for ordering is excruciatingly slow and despite the cafe not being full, my wife queued for 30 minutes to place our order. One person serving at the till at lunchtime is incredibly inefficient and frustrating. That said, the shared ploughman's was very tasty although more contemporary than traditional. The summer fruits flapjack was delicious and moist too. Food 5 stars Slow service 1 star

Beautiful spot to stop for coffee and cake, with friendly polite cafe staff, however that’s where the nice part ended. We were confronted by a very angry red faced man in his 60’s as we left as we didn’t realise we weren’t supposed to park where we did. We had missed a sign right at the top of the long road and there were no no-parking signs or lines on the ground anywhere. As 2 females we felt really intimidated and upset by this bullish man’s actions. There was no need for his to raise his voice at us as he did. The grounds were dog friendly, however I couldn’t find a dog bin so placed in large ones outside the toilets…the swarm of fruit flies that came out the bin, it couldn’t have been emptied in weeks.

Visited the Castle on a day trip and stopped to have lunch. Was very chaotic from the start as the lady on the till did not seem very competent unlike the young lad who took over. We were very shocked to see they only sold IRISH cider in the County of Somerset. Very basic sandwich no trimmings whatsoever and couldnt put onion in tuna sandwich instead of cucumber!!! The time we were sat there three different couples food was returned and people wanting their money back. Not a good experience for such a lovely setting. when we had a chat with some locals they commented on "how bad it was" crazy!!!

Beautiful spot, by the river and the staff were quite pleasant BUT cakes were in short supply and Strawberry Cream Cake was very dry and had less than one strawberry on it. Cream tea at £6.60 had just one scone on the plate and a tiny one ounce jar of jam. However, there was enough cream for two scones! I am a very disappointed local and I am sorry I cannot recommending it.

I visited here with my sister for lunch, as we had always wanted to try this cafe in such a beautiful setting. Whilst the garden was a lovely place to sit, and the staff were very friendly, we were incredibly disappointed when the food turned up. We both ordered a cheddar and red onion marmalade toastie on brown bread, which when it arrived turned out to be made from cheap sliced bread and came with no salad or coleslaw. This did not live up to what we expected given the price paid and the reputation of national trust tearooms. We had a far better experience in independent tea rooms close by, and so would be reluctant to visit here again for lunch.

Gone downhill since last visit, ordered Farmhouse style Cheddar cheese sandwich which when arrived turned up to be a square piece of cheese like you get in a plastic wrapper from a supermarket between two pieces of dry cheap white bread that came across like it was made the day before. Other people were complaining about food Items were being sent back . It’s a pity that the quality of the food and the lack of pride in preparation didn’t match the garden ambiance

We take regular short breaks in this lovely part of England and often follow a brisk dog walk with a visit to a National Trust tea room. Standards are usually high with helpful staff - even if peak times become busy. Our visit today with friends was a real disappointment. Tables were not cleared, the coffee machine was 'down', baked potatoes off menu and no sandwiches after 2pm. Service was lacklustre at best and our waitress clearly had other interests at heart.

Took our two children (2 and 4) to Dunster Castle so stopped here for lunch. Were lucky to get a table as it was quite busy. Ordered a cream tea, a ham sandwich, slice of victoria sponge and some bread and butter. Tea and coffee and two glasses of milk. Ten minutes later the cream tea and victoria sponge turn up, along with tea and coffee and one glass of milk. We ask how long the rest will be and the waitress goes and comes back with another glass of milk. We wait another ten minutes for the sandwich and bread and butter but nothing arrives. We wait a bit longer before I go and ask. I then get told that it got really busy just after we ordered so should expect a wait, but the chap was very sorry. I ask how long it will be, and he tells me another ten minutes. For a ham sandwich and some bread and butter. So I asked for a refund as the rest was finished and we had to leave. I got a refund, and once we'd packed up and left, saw the missing food arrive at our table. Not very well organised, cake was nice, coffee was average, never got find out about the ham sandwich!

The cafe was busy, but there always seemed to be tables available and the service was friendly and reasonably fast. We both had the very tasty vegetarian quiche which came with a nice fresh salad. I think the cafe is run by the National Trust, but it's actually just outside the castle boundary, so no need to pay an admission charge if you're not visiting the castle/the actual water mill/the castle gardens (you can't see the water mill from the cafe). Dunster is very dog-friendly - dogs can go everywhere except actually in the castle, and there's a big meadow between the castle and the road where they can run off-lead.

The waiting queue was ridiculously slow, only one person taking orders, the food was ok, but expensive, and after ordering we had to keep asking and reminding them fr items missed. Having waited 40 mins for the first of our orders to arrive, we were there for some time! n the end the waitress came out into the garden to ask who else was waiting for their food. The cafe is far too small for a busy tourist weekend and the staff could not cope. they clearly need more people in the kitchen preparing food. Shame, as this cafe is in a beautiful setting and could be really lovely.

Came here with my family and granted they were busy but there seemed to be no organisation and staff were all over the place. We had the Victoria sponge and well that was just an extremely dry sponge with a slither of jam in, and no butter cream etc and well the cheese scone left a lot to be desired. Would rather bring a picnic next time.

Came here with family for cups of tea and cake.the cafe was busy and the service was very disjointed.we made our order which being teas and cakes was not a difficult order but it took ages to arrive and was then delivered in stages.the cakes were abissmal.the Victoria sponge was so try it was almost a rock cake and the cheese scones appeared to be lacking the key ingredient....cheese.while the place looks very pretty and scenic I wouldn't recommend it

We visited while at Dunster Castle on a very wet day. The mill is a nice place to visit, its free, dogs are welcome and its interesting for the kids. We spoke to a member of staff who was very friendly and he explained to my daughter how flour is nade. There is a small shop that sells local produce, we bought some porridge oats and muesli, I would highly recommend as they are so tasty!

Friendly place to stop by. We did plenty of good walking around here, could have spent longer but it was only a flying visit. We didn't eat at the cafe but it all looked good as we saw it being delivered. I'll certainly stop by on my next visit.

We visited on a hot sunday, it was very busy, and we had a hungry toddler with us. The team were very accommodating and offered to make her a kids sandwich, which was presented lovely. Also had a bowl of leek and potato soup and a cheese scone, it was the best homemade soup I've had in a long time. Great customer service and lovely environment

Lovely young lady served us today with excellent product knowledge! I suffer with some allergies and she helped me make the right choice, a flapjack in the end and it was delicious. Our decafe soya lattes where perfect too - nice and hot! Nothing was too much trouble for her - a real credit to the NT. Well worth a visit, even though I could imagine it's hectic on busy days. Will be visiting again. Thank you.

After a lovely trip around the castle we stopped for lunch at the watermill tea rooms. I had a smoked cheese and spinach frittata and hubby had tuna jacket, both very tasty and reasonably priced. Unfortunately the best seats on the grassed area were not available as it was being re seeded. The staff were really friendly helpful and Poppy our dog was made welcome too.

Its a great shame but the Tea Rooms are run by young people that have no idea of customer relations and food quality. Its not their fault but they total under trained. The young man that was serving dropped a piece of a cake of the plate so hard all the sugar fell off all over the tray. The tray was then taken, along with the spilt sugar to a table. The cake both my wife and myself had was unbelievably dry, and completely inedible. Take my advice and eat elsewhere as there are many Tea shops in the town that want your business and serve great cake with smile.

We went to have a nice relaxing visit but the staff here clearly wasn't in a very friendly mood. When we asked for menus the lady was abrupt and snapped saying all menus are on table which they wasn't when she realised she almost through the menu at us. When we got served the lady behind the til was really huffing when I asked a question that she clearly didn't want to be there. A real shame as this could have a nice atmosphere and people may want to hang around longer but we left straight away.

Unfortunately didn't get a chance to try the food so I can't give leave a rating, but I'm sure it would be good given previous reviews. All I'd say is if you do want to eat from here get your order in ASAP otherwise you will be left hungry. We walked in at 7, only one table was taken, but they couldn't take an order for 2 x fish and chips, and there wasn't even a hint of trying to fit our order in. So we left hungry. All I'd say to non local visitors is get there at 5pn or ring early otherwise you may be disappointed, the food looked great which made it worse!!

Awful! 1/4 Burgers tasted disgusting. No nice meaty taste, just slimey, tasteless and cold. I don't even want to think where the burgers came from or what the ingredients are 🤢. Came with a little bit of shredded lettuce, no onions or burger sauce, I thought my taste buds had died until my husband and father-in-law agreed with me. We had to go out in the terrible storm as my elderly in-laws had no power/electricity and don't have gas where they live, they were cold and hungry and as McDonald's was closed thought I'd give Seafare a go as their fish and chips are good, what a HUGE disappointment especially as it cost over £20.00! We wish we had gone next door to the Takeaway place as obviously Seafare have no idea on burgers. My mother-in-law had the chicken burger and left her's too. VERY DISAPPOINTED and a total waste of money.
