Piggy In The Middle in West Somerset

Unfortunately didn't get a chance to try the food so I can't give leave a rating, but I'm sure it would be good given previous reviews. All I'd say is if you do want to eat from here get your order in ASAP otherwise you will be left hungry. We walked in at 7, only one table was taken, but they couldn't take an order for 2 x fish and chips, and there wasn't even a hint of trying to fit our order in. So we left hungry. All I'd say to non local visitors is get there at 5pn or ring early otherwise you may be disappointed, the food looked great which made it worse!!

Gluten free pizza. Absolutely smashed it. Loved every bite. Thank you so much! £14 95p well spent

Had takeaway twice from Piggy in the Middle during our recent trip to Porlock and food was fantastic both times. Great fish and chips and the pies were the best we have ever tasted. Lovely cosy restaurant with a great choice of wines and beers if you choose to eat in too. Everything is cooked fresh to order so it is always best to book or phone in your order ahead of time. Looking forward to our next visit.

A very enjoyable visit with good food and excellent service. Definitely worth a visit when in Porlock especially if you enjoy good fish and chips.

Went to get Fish and Chips take away, looked lovely inside but appeared overwhelmed with orders from seated customers. said we couldn't put any order in until after 8pm. I would suggest they stop doing take away or at least not during high season. We ended up going to Alcombe , had superb fish and chips.

Going to this restaurant has just confirmed to us what an amazing place Porlock is. The wonderful man running the front of house has had the restaurant for 40 years and his fabulous art work is displayed on the walls. My son was shattered from a long walk and he entertained him with a magical wooden box. The food came out and it came with beautifully cooked fresh vegetables. We have come away feeling blessed that we stopped here and received service that has humbled us in such a good way.

Quirky little restaurant in the middle of Porlock. Majors in pies and seafood. We went for the pies, which were excellent. Good value and service. Would love to return and try some of the seafood! There are also dozens of interesting sounding pies still to try including a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options.

Absolutely fabulous. The Seafood basket, delicious, my husband had the Lamb and mint pie and he said it was fantastic. Can't fault the food, service or premises, so clean and friendly. I hope they remain for a very long time.

The worst experience a group of friends could have. We had made a prior booking at this restaurant yet the owners denied the booking, said they would never have agreed to accommodate a group of seven. Called us by the wrong leader’s name and denied they had been the ones to phone us which they did two days before our departure for this holiday. We left with no apology, certainly no meal and found a very pleasing venue for dinner elsewhere. We would not recommend this diner in Porlock and the owners were most unpleasant in their manner.

Had a meal earlier this evening and it was superb. The decor is interesting and some very relaxing music. Service was excellent and food was cooked to order. We both had pies which were good quality and tasty. Without asking extra gravy was provided. A wide range of vegetarian options. All in all a nice place for an evening meal in Porlock.

After a hard days hiking and swimming the nosh at the Piggy was ideal - tasty, filling and unpretentious. The wine by the glass was stonking value and the art on the walls of Mick, Keith and co a great nod to the rock'n'roll heritage of the UK. Fab family fun.

Fish and chips was delicious. But the restaurant was old fashioned needs an update desperately. Black cutlery, black napkins. Seating by the door very unsuitable as every time door is open cold food. Not the cheapest and they only take cash..

We caught “magpies” there. That was delicious ! The restaurant is stormed (and we understand why) by people who want to have fish & chips/pies to take away. It's a bit annoying to have so many entries/exits while dining at the table. But hey, it was worth it! Do not accept credit card, bring cash.

Who has ever heard of a fish and chip shop that can't take any more takeaway orders at 8pm on a Saturday night??? A strange way to run a fish and chip shop.

The pies are absolutely fantastic, served with homemade chips or mash. The owner is very friendly and service was great. In fact, the pies are so good that we ordered takeout later the same week. However, be warned, it is very busy and it’s best to book in advance and order take-away early as we saw a lot of people turned away.

I had read reviews for this restaurant and decided to give it a go. The owner was very welcoming when we arrived. It’s a cosy little place. The choice of pies are really good. As a family of four - we went for steak and ale/lamb/beef and blue cheese and mushroom and asparagus . All arrived with either mash and veg/gravy or homemade chips peas and gravy. The pies were delicious and the homemade chips were lovely. All in all a wonderful meal followed by a small selection of lovely desserts. Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant if you find yourself in Porlock - compliments to the chef!! Thank you.

As Verena (Owner) says, it’s not a traditional fish and chip shop, but do do fish & chips to take away. The chips aren’t my favourite but the pies and fish are second to none. The fact that they’re still going strong after all these years speaks volumes. You can’t please everyone & there’s plenty of good chippys just a 10-15 minute drive away. Piggy’s employs folk and helps with Porlock’s economy, so I say, ‘Verena and the amazing chefs, keep on doing what you do best, and thank you.

Award winning home made pies with either chips and peas or veg and mash. Absolutely great. Eat in or take-away. A chance visit given it was the only place open on a Monday and it was worth the visit. Highly recommend.

We'd been looking forward to popping in here since we found out about it. Decor fascinating, with many paintings. Music good, the kind of thing Elizabeth Alker might play on her known unknown sequence Saturday mornings. Food great: the seafood platter delicious. Order early though, and bring cash rather than card. Reasonable prices, friendly place to eat.

This is predominantly a pie, fish and chip restaurant and is seriously good. There are a wide selection of (delicious) pies and the service is efficient and professional. The fish is lovely and the pies are lovely. We stayed in Porlock for a week and ate there twice - cancelling another local pub/restaurant to dine there on the second occasion.

Very nice little restaurant in Porlock. They have different fish and chips and lots of pie! They also have vegan/gluten free version. The restaurant welcomes around 20 people only but they do take away. I saw many people coming to order and collect take away while I was eating there. Looks like it has a good reputation in the area!

Very disappointed with our takeaway meal from this place. My husband walked down from the campsite to purchase a takeaway and was told cash only so as he only had his phone to pay, he returned to the campsite to inform me of the situation. 8 then walked into the village to get cash out of the machine and order our food. I was told it would not be ready until 8.10pm ( over an hour and half wait). I asked if I needed to pay upfront but was told no. I agreed and returned to the campsite to wait. My husband then returned at said time to pick up our order. I ordered the seafood box and chips. The whole meal looked and tasted like it was cheap, nasty over fried in old oil food. Absolutely disgusting and I couldn't eat it ( gave it to my dogs). Hubbies was just as bad, he couldn't eat the brown shrivelled chips. A very long wait involving ×3 trips too and fro from campsite to chippy for nothing. I might also add that the owner was a miserable so n so who blatenently had no sense of humour and made me feel that I was an inconvenience for stepping into the chippy to attempt making an order. Well never, ever again!

Wonderful fish and chips well worth the visit

We were staying in Prolock for the weekend and wanted a takeaway, so gave Piggy in the Middle a go. The fish and chips were decent enough with generous portions but I'd say you are better off going for the pies - mine was excellent. The owners could make it clearer that you need to phone up during the day to place your order in advance, you can't just turn up and order something.

Excellent service and Cod and Chips also. Cooked to perfection. Best I've had in many a year. Totally recommend.

I always say there is something missing in the pies when I eat out, there is so much potential in what we can put in our pies. Piggy in the middle have ABSOLUTELY NAILED it!!!! I ordered the bbq pulled pork with stuffing and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since, made my eyes widen and my shoulders relax as my senses took it all in. Staying in Porlock for one night wanting fish and chips and bingo there it was. Clean and tidy with a friendly host order fish and chips and it was freshly cooked and very tasty. Recommend.

The best fish and chips ever, cooked to perfection.

The pies lived up to expectations. We had the beef stout and horseradish and the pulled pork. Really tasty fillings and melt in the mouth pastry. Good value too. Definitely worth a visit for a takeaway.

Staying a week near Porlock, we planned one day where we would have a fish and chips meal. So after our 11 mile walk along the coast, called in to order our meals. We parked outside the shop and despite arriving an hour after the time they open, the door was locked with no-one in site. Looking through the window, all I could see were a collection of paintings, priced for sale. So I phoned the number on the door to see what was going on, as there was no explanation on the door. The lady that answered the phone, said they had just got back from a holiday with no apology for being closed without any indication at the door. What a way to treat your customers!! So we returned to our accommodation for our sandwich supper. Incredible.

Terrible service, rude answer service,We had the award winning pies, I’m not sure how it’s award winning as we had bad tummy’s from them the next day. I wouldn’t call this a fish and chip shop it’s Barbara doing her best at a fish and chips shop in the back of a shop. Service with no smile at all!

After one and a half hour wait for two cos and chips, the Fish was well cooked but small, the chips were definitely frozen oven cooked not fried. A bit disappointing after a long wait.

The quality of food is very good but you must remember to phone your order through in advance. It's not your traditional chippy but more a restaurant that does take away. The quoted opening times are when you collect and pay (cash only) for your order. You agree the pickup time when you place your order. There's no parking but there is a car park not too far away that is free after 6pm. Oh, did I mention the food is very good? Will definitely order again.

We're holidaying in Porlock and saw the excellent reviews for Piggy in the middle. We went to order at 8.35 pm knowing it closed at 9pm. We were rudely told that we couldn't have any food as they were too busy and we should have ordered earlier. We are a party of five adults. As a customer service specialist I feel the front of house attitude was appalling and the manager of the establishment should address customer service excellence training for the staff.

We’ve eaten many fish and chip meals from here and I have to say I’ve never been disappointed. Very good quality food at a great price.

I've stayed at Porlock 4 times it is always closed, away for a break it has on the window but if you look online it says it opens soon, would love writing a good review but I can't as it doesn't list anywhere it's accurate opening times, odd way to run a business

By far the best fish and chips I have ever had in my life. I’m a huge fan of a good fish and chips and in my 31 years of eating them I’ve journeyed from north to south of the UK dining on the good and the bad. Piggy in the Middle stands out as the best I’ve had. I ordered a large cod and chips, with a seafood basket. Each batter was different in flavour, marrying the prawn, squid or fish it was delicately coating. The cod was fresh, melting in your mouth and the decadent batter was the perfect accompaniment. The chips weren’t soggy but had the perfect texture. It’s clear they know the art of cooking fish and chips and have perfected it over their 30 year history. I wish I could go back. Thanks again

Phoned in our order. They were very flexible in arranging a pick up time which allowed us to go for a pint beforehand. The fish was beautiful. Not too greasy and incredibly tasty. Chips were great, perfect thickness and well made. It all came in a recyclable box as well which I liked. Best fish and chips I've had in years, possibly ever.

Well that was delicious! Panko prawns followed by veg curry pie. Really well cooked and the pie was like a veg samosa - but with pastry - which definitely worked! Phoned through our order this afternoon and picked up right on time. Recommended.

Only taking orders for take away by phone, but we had no telephone reception where we were staying! Do we drove out closer to the restaurant and when I phoned to place the order I was told that they would not be able to accommodate the order until 8:45pm a hole two and half hours later. He asked if that was ok and I said no as we had young children but as I was talking he put the phone down on me! Obviously they don’t need the business!

This place does vegan takeaway pies and fish and chips! We ordered 4 pies which were delicious. Only little problem was we ordered curried and spinach and butternut squash pies and ended up with 4 curried ones. They were tasty though! Would recommend this place!

It is hard to get gluten free pies, so you can imagine my delight fidning this little gem in the quiet viallage of Porlock.We had a gluten free chese and onion pie, lamb and mint pie and a steak pie, wow wowo wow, off the scale for quality and taste. My husband is not gluten free but ate the pie and said if he had not known, he would have thought was a normal one as pastry was excellent quality.Thank you.

Had a take away from here on Saturday. Ordered over the phone and had time for a pint in the pub before collection. We we given a time slot which was bang on time. Fab fish and chips and the best curry sauce I've had. This is our second visit and there will be a third. The beach is about a 15 minute walk and was the perfect place to eat.

A couple of years since my last visit to this restaurant when the menu was a little more upmarket and had a wider range of fresh fish dishes. It's now fish and chips, pie and peas but a good range, good quality and even caters well to the vegetarian market.Unfortunately we hit the start of the coronavirus lock down during our recent stay. All the pubs, restaurants and cafes we'd usually visit were closed on day two, so it was good to find somewhere like Piggy In The Middle, offering a wide range of takeaway options. We were a party of nine, ordered quite a selection of dishes and through the range of pies to the fish and chips, everyone was more than happy with their choice. We even returned before leaving our accommodation for a venison pie to take home!I prefer to sit in to be honest but given the circumstances, takeaway worked well on this occasion. Next trip to Porlock though, I hope to book a table and enjoy this restaurant once again.

Where do you start with a business that's been around for 35 years? What could I tell the owners that they haven't already heard? After becoming pretty (very) regular at this quaint, warm, friendly restaurant for many years, this restaurant has seen big changes from it's earlier days cooking local brasserie food, from steaks and racks of lamb to now serving some of the most humble - but some of the best - comfort food I've ever eaten.With staple British dishes like Fish and Chips, Pie and Mash, Seafood baskets - it's always better served simply and not over-complicated. This restaurant achieves that and so much more.. From the quality fish they buy ensuring freshness, to the hundreds of people the owner Paul was telling me they push out over the summer at it's peak time, and keeping the locals fed in the winter months when nobody else wanders the streets. Fish and chip Friday is also still very much alive!The decor is homely, with paintings by the owner himself, a big warm gas fire, relaxing music and very much emanating a family friendly vibe. It's an intimate 20 or so cover restaurant which feels particularly cosy in the Autumn and Winter months.The food? Exceptional. The fish is top quality and always perfectly cooked.. Through precision timing and a special oil blend they use, they produce this amalgamation of deliciousness that simply melts apart, but somehow the batter still stays crispy? Most chippies I go into produce stodgy, overcooked and stewed chips. The batter is always soggy and tends to not stick to the fish, but at Piggy it's always bang on perfect. On one occasion I was a little late picking up my order and the chef Vee cooked me fresh chips after I apologised profusely with no extra charge.. They didn't have to do that either as it was completely my fault.But to summarise this long-standing business, the reviews speak for themselves and the locals have been supporting them for over 35 years. As I was about to post this review I noticed a review below mentioning that they weren't open. As a local I can explain that after October there are no people in the area at all and the hours for the business reduce just to accommodate the local trade. Otherwise in January and February if small businesses opened normal hours they would LOSE MONEY and therefore WOULDN'T SURVIVE (it's probably cheaper for them to close for a couple of months and go somewhere nice). Who decides to come to a seaside town in February during a storm anyway?As a previous small business owner I understand this, but I guess not all people understand (or have common sense). Putting negative reviews on small businesses review platforms (when you haven't even tried the product) is low. For your little ego kick and your little "I told you so", you're trying to destroy someone's livelihood. Also as far as I'm aware, they haven't ever had a website.. The times on TripAdvisor don't reflect 80% of businesses in this area because they're all seasonal and reduce hours in the winter. TripAdvisor doesn't allow for those sort of constant updates.So in short - stick to your pre-battered, bought in fish darling, and leave the good stuff for us. We won't let Piggy go anywhere.

This intimate, cosy, family run restaurant has been going for over 35 years. It's food has become a staple in the area and is ranked in the top 13 Fish and Chip restaurants across the South West. Admittedly, I've become a bit of a regular over the years (my wife likes to remind me) and have tried the majority of their some 40 plus hand made pies, which cater for vegans, vegetarians and people who are gluten free. If it's your first time though, go straight for the freshly cooked fish and chips... This amalgamation of magic - borderline witchcraft - puts most chippys I've stumbled upon before, to shame. You could tell the fish was perfectly cooked by the way the flakes of the fish just melted apart, and the batter super light and crispy. This is the first time I've eaten a large cod and not felt a sense of shame from all that grease and oil. IT'S SEASONAL. Yes folks, due to the restaurant being located in a tiny village in Somerset it's very seasonal meaning that after October their hours slow down and the owners close the restaurant for a few weeks. People don't always realise this and come at unusual times during the winter months and expect it to be open all year around. This has been the case for the 35 years they've been open. I'd recommend calling in advance, earlier the better as Friday and Saturdays become extremely busy and the locals always place their orders early to receive a time to come and pick their orders up. Can't recommend this place enough, it's charming, warm, inviting and puts out the best comfort food in the area (in my humble opinion).

Went to get a takeaway this evening. They were closed. The web site says that they are open, and I know it is out of season, but, if you are running a business, then at least you should keep thing like opening times up to date. No signs in the window to indicate the place would be shut. Just the place in darkness. Very disappointed.

Piggy in the middle food is amazing there was 23 of us ordered food for a take away. Absolutely spot on. So tasty especially the pies. 100% recommend the chicken, ham and leek pie. 👌🏼

This place advertised award-winning pies and they were great. They also offer wine by the half carafe which suited us. Another very friendly place in Porlock. I only gave 4 stars because I thought the chips were a bit poor in comparison with the rest of the meal.
