Discussed pint Guinness gone upto £5.90 a pint, said to staff, cost gone down and owner has put up Guinnes to a very high price, even the staff agreed really hike up price, they too thought it was pure greed. Will not use this pub again.

Being visiting the Dun Cow for many years and it never fails, I tend to have the goats cheese vegetable lasagne, it is delicious and full of flavour, the salad is always fresh with just enough drizzle for flavour and the chips oh my, best ever. My partner on that occasion had curry which was also excellent, it was a full chicken fillet in a curry sauce and my mam had seabass, she is an excellent cook herself so knows good food, always a great atmosphere and staff very helpful, we there again this week to celebrate our daughter getting her first job

Been going here last couple of years probably about once a month. Unfortunately service was very poor with food quality not as good as usual. The waitress managed to get the order’s wrong ( one of the starters and one of the main meals) I think she was new as I hadn’t seen here before. I received prawn cocktail instead of tempura prawns, this was changed without issue but my partner had finished hers by the time mine came ( which wasn’t a problem as I appreciate they needed to be cooked) The main meals came and again mine was wrong. I asked for chips instead of mash but it came with mash, I told the young man I requested chips and he did offer to change it but I said it would be ok. The vegetables were very bland which surprised me as normally they are tasty. Not sure what has changed here?

We booked an overnight after a day at the races. When we arrived we were welcomed by the Manager Richard. He could not have been more helpful. This place is a homely pub with a large separate restaurant. We checked into our room. It certainly is not the Ritz. But was clean ,comfortable and had everything you needed. We ventured into the bar where a quiz was just about to start. The place was packed. There are a great selection of beers and lagers and 24 gins. We ate in the bar it was top class.

I have been going to the pub for a number of years now but after this mornings appalling treatment will never stop foot in again. Three of us arrived at the premises just after 9am for breakfast. As we walked through the second entrance door I heard a female voice say "And these can sod off". I didn't think much of it as didn't believe she was referring to us. We went into the bar area where there was a female member of staff who's face was like thunder. There were people eating in the restaurant but we were seating in the bar. After a few minutes the same female staff member approached us and gave us three forms and a pen and was told to fill it in (this was for us to select what we wanted, clearly for residents staying B&B). The female was stood at the bar talking to a male who appeared to be cleaning the pipes. I then heard her say to the male, in a loud voice "She needs to get more staff in, does she think I'm an octopus!!" and then walked off. I assumed she was referring to either the manager or owner. I completely understand the pressures of working in hospitality industry but to make comments in front of and to customers is a disgrace. We then decided we were clearly not welcome so left. We then went to The Pickled Parsons where we enjoyed a superb breakfast.

Seemed a little disorganised . Other than that it was okBar prices a bit heavy for the area at well over £4 a pint for ordinary type beers. Would I use it again..yes if I was passing.

We were in the area and looked for somewhere for Sunday Dinner, the sign said serving from 12 til 6 so in we went, it was about 3 when we got there. Went to the bar, where we ordered our drinks and were asked to take a seat and someone would come over and take our order. We sat, and sat, and sat, watched others come in and have their order taken, and sat some more, until eventually the barmaid, it wasn't her job, came out and took our order. Food arrived promptly, word of caution, if you don't like to much gravy ask for it separate so you can add what you would like, the meat was deliciously tender, the veg was fresh and tasty and the portions were a decent size, good value for money in a nice local pub, and even thought there was a delay in ordering we would return, the pub was very busy and it didn't look like there were many staff about, the ones that we saw were all busy..good effort.

The food here is always amazing and portions are very large too - something to take into account if you don't have a huge appetite. The only downside is the place itself is starting to look a bit tired. Whereas it once looked charmingly rustic, the shabby carpets, tables and chairs (in the bar, I can't speak for the restaurant) are in desperate need of a makeover.

So many Restaurants/Pubs could learn so much from ‘The Dun Cow Inn’. All the basics are more than covered here. Selection/value/service/quality home cooked food/atmosphere etc. Being somewhat geeky when dining out, I always ask for scores out of 10. When all four of us scored each course 10/10, it says everything. Couldn’t fault it. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Visited here for another family birthday meal. All 10 of us thoroughly enjoyed our main maps, which ranged from beef lasagne and salmon to pork in bacon, butter chicken and steak like the one pictured. The majority of us also had dessert. I got a HUGE portion of sticky toffee pudding as pictured and they were almost as generous with the other desserts including a pistachio brownie, bakewell and bread and butter pudding. The Dunn Cow is proving to be a very reliable place, where everyone in the group is guaranteed equally good food and we can't wait to return.

We were given the lunchtime and light bites menus but there are chalkboards near the bar with all the other main meals on, and there’s plenty of choice. Have been a few times mainly in large family birthday groups, Went a few sundays ago for lunch. Food good, service abysmal, drink prices ridiculas. Went with wife & daughter arrived 2pm left at 4.30pm that is the time we waited to be served. We were sat at table went to bar ordered drinks, I had a pint of Morretti lager £5.50 never ever anywhere paid that much for the same drink. No one came to table to take order so went to bar and asked if we could be served and barmaid said she would send someone over to take order. When I went back to the bar for the 3rd time she was so embarrassed she took the order herself. Food then arrived quite quickly all good apart from the roast potato's as they were dont know how tough as old boots??? Finished that, no dish's cleared so had to go back to bar to order desert's. Basically we sat two & a half hours to be served this meal, Tables either side of us one ordered a desert and the other coffees both went to the bar to pay there bills with neither having received these. That's at least three very disgruntaled patrons due to no service.

Attended today as a large party with family and friends. 9 adults, 2 kids and 3 infants. The gentleman that took our orders was fantastic. However, when it came to the infants needing a high chair it was a problem. All two high chairs that I could see were being used. One by a kid studying for her GCSEs on an iPad. She jumped in and out of the chair faster than a rabbit on ecstasy. I understand it’s rare to probably get a table with three kids under 18 months. We improvised took a chair with arms off an unused table. The child had an accident in the chair which was cleaned up; the waitress saw she was not entertained. Made us feel wrong for taking the chair. Huffing and puffing over the incident. Ding ding round 2- the mains. All our mains came out, except one which we’d ordered to come with the starters. When enquiring about the missing meal to the blonde male waiter, he snapped back,’it’ll be on its way out!’ Rude. The meal wasn’t on the way out. Clearly it hasn’t been made up. Moral of this- if you’re a group of more than 4 with no children you’ll have a great time. The staff are rude can’t cope with a high pressure environment.

We booked a table in the restaurant for a mid week dinner as my wife had been previously with friends . The food was very good albeit rather large portions with some dishes . The Scallops starter was very fresh and light and the main course dishes were also fresh but a little too much . Overall the menu was quite varied and a very large selection , wine was pleasant for house choice by the glass . The pub was quite full for bar meal customers but the Restaurant quite empty which was a pity as the cost and choice were of better value . The cost was pleasantly low 2 starters 2 main courses and 3 glasses of wine came in at less than £70 which we feel was value for money . We attended as a family on 19/6/2018, as a celebration. Only one member of staff smiled, or was polite during the whole visit. . Of the seven people who ate, one meal was inedible and had to be sent back. No apologies were made and the meal was taken away very rudely. The staff member in charge came over about 5 minutes later (she was the only polite one) and asked if something else was wanted instead, but this was declined. We had to wait ages between courses and was never asked if any drinks were wanted after the first order, which they got completely wrong. Unfortunately I did not check the bill until after I had paid. They charged me for 1 drink we never got and the meal that was inedible. When I noticed this I asked for the meal to be refunded and was told no. I asked why and was told "chef said other people ate the same meal and theirs was fine so he said we had to pay". Unbelievable. I insisted on the refund and was again refused. Absolutely appalling experience after many good visits. Will never be going back and would advise all to check your bills carefully. My dispute is now in the hands of the legal department of my bank.

Went for Sunday lunch today as was passing, had heard good things. The food was actually good but three young lads who are obviously regulars as they knew lots of people in there decided to become abusive as I left with my wife and two girls. They were mouthing obscenities, laughing and blowing kisses out of the front window of the pub as we were walking to my car. I wanted to confront them but my wife told me to get in the car and my two young girls told me to come back as I started to walk to go back inside and confront them. I am Asian and clearly this was racist and I would have confronted them if my family wasn't with me. The landlords will lose custom if they allow this behaviour and this type of customer as a regular. Spoilt what was a good afternoon and upset my wife and daughters.

Food is top class if a little expensive. Bar meals seem to be same price as restaurant meals. However, staff are wonderful and quality is outstanding. Just really needs new carpets and furnishings.

We had family visiting the North East and so wanted to take them somewhere they'd enjoy before they headed back home. We remembered our last visit here and knew it would be good.

Visited on a Friday evening when it was busy. Took the staff a while to ask us if we wanted drinks then a further delay before ordering food. Starters arrived about 20 minutes later - acceptable as they were busy and obviously everything is made fresh. Really lovely food. Gap between clearing starter plates and bringing mains was ok. Delicious food. Plates cleared, desert menus brought promptly and order taken fairly quickly. 20 minutes later we enquired where deserts were, waitress apologised but didn't say what had happened. 10 minutes after this we told them we didn't want them (to do this my mam had to get up and go to a waitress as they kept walking past the table not doing anything but ignoring us). Someone came and apologised and said we could have the deserts and that she had taken them off the bill however by this point (30+mins) since ordering them we really didn't feel like them so we declined their offer - no other compensation was offered and we were told that the 'girls' would be spoken to.

This is not a typical Inn serving food. most Inns will serve a small selection well but the Dun Cow serve a huge range excellently..

We visited for a meal on a cold December evening and we weren't disappointed by this classic British pub. We got a seat by the window and there was a nice friendly atmosphere. The bar staff were polite and friendly, and the menu offered a nice range of food. We ordered an omelette with chips and a side salad and a pasta dish. Both were absolutely delicious, the omelette in particular was one of the best I've had. We would definitely recommend this place and will be stopping by again next time we are passing!

We went for Sunday lunch having phoned two days before and booked for the restaurant, when we arrived they could not find our booking and offered us a table at the bottom end of the restaurant. It was so dark we could not read the menu so we decided to eat in the bar. Husband went and paid for drinks and after choosing of food ordered at the bar. When the Sunday lunch arrived he requested more gravy , the meal was OK , not many vegetables. Yorkshire pudding was good.

A menu with something for everyone - and very reasonably priced. I cannot fault the service or the meals. One word of caution.... The car park is tiny, so you might want to park up by the library- which is just a minute or so walk to the pub.

I have been visiting this pub on occasions while in UK and for five or six years. The food has been consistently good and today’s fish and chips and bangers and mash were no exception. Beer selections are also good with the Black Sheep being a very good pint. If the pub/ hotel has a problem it tends to be service and there is always an undercurrent of conflict behind the bar that I recall on each visit as barmaids glower at each other. It made a change from the false politeness back home in US so I did not consider it detrimental.

We used to visit here often but hadn’t been in a couple of years so booked a family meal at Christmas. We ordered from the Christmas menu, which had a good selection. The food was good apart from my Mother who ordered the fish, which came very over cooked. The only other downside was the we were given the desserts menu but no staff returned to take our order so didn’t end up having anything.

Had booked weeks ago only to be told we would have to sit in bar , I refused whereupon they sat us in a little cubby hole with low ceiling so after eating our meal we had to move as was uncomfortably hot . The service was ok , nothing special , was that dark could hardly read the menu so just ordered the first thing we came to that we fancied . Finished our wine and left . Food was tasty but that’s the only plus .

Was not happy with our last visit as standards were lacking but it was the end of a busy Sunday so said we would return at a different time. Glad we did as it was completely different from last visit staff more relaxed and helpful, sharing a joke, table clean and situated in a nice spot, food of a high quality all in all a really positive experience. So glad we gave it a second chance.

We booked a table for 12 on a Sunday lunch to celebrate my mum's 92nd birthday. We were given a lovely square table, meaning we could all chat, and it was beautifully laid out and with lit candles - it looked really special. We all chose a variety of things from the menu - some of us had the traditional roast, whilst others had fish or the veggie option. Without exception, everyone's meal was delicious, with extremely generous portions. Special mention to the glorious desserts! But what made the meal really memorable were the staff who looked after us. Even though the place was heaving, we never felt rushed and they couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Thank you so much, we had the best time.

We went to this restaurant as the menu looked diverse to suit everyone. We were seated ok but took a while to get drinks so ordered from the bar. Food came in a reasonable time. 3 out of 5 enjoyed their meal, however, I ordered the steak pie and some of my steak was chewy. The other meal was a shepherds pie and was very runny. We asked the waitress if we could order more drinks and were told you need to do that at the bar but can do it this once. Not a good response from a waitress. Seemed to be busy and full of other happy customers. I would say try another spot first.

Stayin in the travel lodge near by and walked into Sedgefield. Came across the dun cow inn on a Saturday night. Very busy but managed to get a cosy table for 2. Had the scallops and black pudding to start, best scallops I’ve ever tasted, melted in the mouth. Mains where the home made chilli with rice & sea bass & lemon potatoes. Not had such a good meal for ages sea bass was lovely.

Visited the Dun Cow as myself and my family felt like treating ourselves on a Tuesday night , after all why not . We have visited before but mainly for Sunday lunch and more than often the Sundays are crazy . On arrival we were greeted by a lovely female who seated us, took our drinks order then very promptly came back with drinks.

Have visited here for several meals over the years. Our most recent visit was for an early evening meal. My wife had the duck which she said tasted delicious - well cooked and nicely presented. The veg (honey roast) were also lovely. I opted for steak pie - in terms of the taste of the filling there was plenty succulent and tender meat with very tasty gravy - this was probably one of the best pub pies I've ever had (second only to the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge imho) I wasn't as keen on the puff pastry - it wasn't bad, but just a bit average.

Called in for a lunchtime meal for my birthday, quite busy,so waited approx.45mins for meals, which I think is enough time to wait.We both had the peri peri chicken, with chips and side salad.Chicken was delicious, fat and tender, lovely sauce etc.Only downside the salad/coleslaw had cucumer mixed in,which I hate, but no hassle picking it out!Just aswell we'd ordered extra chips,as the bowl wouldn't have been enough for 2.Couldn't fault the bar staff/waiters,very polite and pleasant chaps!!The bill was very reasonable, would certainly go again!!

Went here Sunday 24th September as a party of 6. It was packed throughout the restaurant and pub. Three of us adults and a child ordered fish and chips which was good. Two of us however ordered the supposedly lean beef traditional Sunday lunch. It was dreadful. The meat was very tough, grisly and not in the least tender as described. The service was abysmal. We waited a long time for our main course then eventually were asked if we would like to see a dessert menu. The menu hadn't materialized after around 45 minutes so we asked a passing waitress who gave us menu's. After another very long wait, it would seem no one was going to bother to come back to take our order so we decided to leave. On paying the bill, my husband saw a customer and his family in distress. The man was clearly choking. My husband went to his aid and sorted the issue however, we did not see one member of staff go to this family to ask if they were ok. The whole family were right there in a place they could not be missed and were clearly distressed and crying. Sadly another case of profit over service. Understaffed or badly organized, just wonder how many orders they lost because of this. We would not bother going here again.

Visited first time after lock down (I believe it’s opened under new management) on a Saturday afternoon. Booked a table for food and glad we did as it was very busy. The service was slow but this was mentioned on our arrival as they were under staffed and didn’t predict how busy it would be. However, the atmosphere was fab (lively, sport on the TV and a range of music was been played) and at the time we hardly noticed the wait between drinks and food! We ordered three different meals (Yorkshire Pudding, Cheeseburger and chicken and cheese baguette) portions were huge (for £6.95 each) and delicious. Lager and cider were reasonably prices too. Hopefully the place gets a well needed refurb under new management as it is the only negative - but I appreciate the pub has just recently reopened and Rome wasn’t built in a day! We’ll definitely be back.

Ordered BBQ chicken loaded fries and was served frozen chips not fries with frozen strips of chicken covered with cheese and a squirt of BBQ sauce. Husband had pie of the day, said the pie was nice but the gravy was lumpy and too thick won’t be going back there again

This pub is ok when they actually have food on they advertise a carvery till 8 we turned up at 5.30 it was our 35 wedding anniversary and we wanted to go out for a special dinner we were going to have all three courses and a few drinks only to be told they didn’t have any carvery left really bad management to run out of food two and a half hours before closing we ended off coming home and our special meal was beans on toast it’s a ok pub for a quick meal but don’t go there for any special occasion they will just let you down

The most disgusting breakfast, the poached eggs were stone cold, the mushroom not sure how it was cooked but it was horrible, heavily smoked streaky bacon, awful sausage, beans ok. It's not cheap either. Definitely won't be back.
