Nice quality food - pricier side of cafe fodder but not unexpected from the venue as a whole. Minor issue with not knowing what a Panini is when serving crusty baguette roll - the overall quality/taste was very good. Decent Coleslaw rather than the budget catering watery affair usually found. Pre-packed sandwiches with no option to create your own, Captive audience but plenty of room in the park for your own picnics. £46 for 4.

Sadly the only redeeming feature of this cafe was the very nice and helpful lady serving The food was shockingly poor quality . 40 mins to wait for a quiche while the rest of the party had finished their food. Quiche was allegedly brie, beetroot and kale. It was literally brie with a dollop of some sort of beetroot salad in the middle. No egg involved .. very strange Will bring a picnic next time

Firstly the grounds of Dumfries House are amazing and well worth a visit. The cafe however isn’t. One would hope for something better at such a prestigious location. It has an air of being run down and mismanaged. We were served the dullest cheese sandwiches on plain sliced white bread with a handful of crisps and stale carrot cake. Get your act together or give up and get someone else in who can do a good job.

Used to be a nice cafe with snacks, soups, cakes, and sandwiches, unfortunately, looks like in an attempt to increase the profits they employ now could care less teenage staff, and started to leave the quality of the food behind what used to be.

Lovely building; very comfy feel. However, coming into the cafe you are faced with a vague open space in front of the counter with no guidance for what to do where. Fine if you have visited before, but as newbies we ended up wandering about like confused hens while the plentiful staff completely ignored us. Menu limited; food very good; service vague - mostly the staff treated us as getting in the way of their far more important tasks. I stood at the counter for nearly five minutes while SIX staff busied about, studiously avoiding eye contact. Also, they won't clear dishes from the table until you've left, so trays pile up on unoccupied tables.

Went to the cafe hoping for a full English Breakfast. Choices were bacon roll or sandwich, sausage in roll or sandwich and scrambled egg. I had the bacon in toast in brown bread and my wife had scrambled egg with brown bread Staff were very pleasant. After a short wait a young lady brought our breakfast. Tea was hot and plentiful! Unfortunately, my bacon came with white toast (first mistake) my wife's scrambled eggs came with white toast (second mistake). My bacon was like hard plastic and had obviously not been cooked fresh. Two bites were enough! My wife had the same problem. Arrived with white toast not brown and scrambled eggs that had obviously been cooked some time ago. I love Dumfries House, but we will not be returning for breakfast! Not only have I been a cook, but I was also a Cookery teacher, so hopefully I know what I am saying. This is just basic cooking that is done in minutes. As we paid beforehand, I had already left a tip. Mistake!

Such a beautiful place to come to with family. However the lunch was awful. I ordered the jacket potato and it tasted awful. The kids menu was a sandwich with a slice of cheese in it and about 10 crisps on the plate. Online it says they serve wine and beer but we were told not when we got there. Will not ever come back to lunch here

Before our tour of Dumfries House, we popped into the nearby Coach House for quick lunch. This building was previously a stable and storehouse and the sections between areas are still in situ, so that diners can choose from cosy small rooms to eat in. It was a chilly June day when we were there and there didn’t seem to be any heating on, so slightly cold. It’s self-service and there’s a wide choice of hot and cold food including two home made soups and freshly made sandwiches and paninis. A bit more choice for vegetarians would be welcome. Service was quick and friendly. The food was delicious and the portions are generous. Prices are reasonable. There are toilets here, very clean and welcoming, as well as the toilets outside. If you have time, the Visitor Centre is nearby with extremely helpful staff to answer queries. They seem to be building up a range of books and other items for sale.

At its previous location, this cafe was poor but they have upped their game. Food and choice are both better, as is the environment in the former stables. Queuing system is still a bit cumbersome as no priority is given to customers wanting a coffee only to finish off their meal and same staff are handling food and cash - hardly hygienic.

The food here was good however, fairly disorganised during order taking it was fairly clear I had a family of four and the person behind taking the order took my food order and started making my hot drink instead of taking the full family food and drink order. Then another person came round to finish taking the whole food order but then the first person finished the order. Was very weird. But good thing is by the time we had walked outside the food arrived pretty quickly. It was all good. One thing I would say I should that all the sandwiches seemed to be on white bread no brown bread choice. But the jacket potatoes and paninis were good and filling. Also not very clear with what you get with your JP on the side. Still good food.

The Coach House cafe on the Dumfries House estate has seen a revamp and more seating, much of it in the horse stalls of the stables. There is still the coach house space with tall wide windows giving the impression one is in an orangery or conservatory, all decked out with Lloyd Loom chairs. Both areas are comfortable and, on a winter's day, warm.

But whoever designed the queuing system has miscalculated. It’s bonkers. There’s no table service, you q and for food they give you a number and bring it out to you. Massive congestion between the rooms with the doorway between them far too narrow, so lots of squishing. And they don’t tell you anywhere that there’s no table service, so you can sit and wait for 20 minutes thinking you are being ignored when you’re not....

Quick visit to the gardens, beautiful as they are, decided to have a bite to eat as well as we had travelled from North Ayrshire and felt a bit hungry. The service counter is a decent size but there is not real room to queue as there is a walkway through it on which both sides have seating areas to dine. Becomes very crowded during busy times and no-one seems to know where to stand if there is a few people waiting. The food is nice but not a great choice and I suggest a little on the dear side. It does have sandwiches to order which means if that is what a lot of folk want then there will be quite a wait. There are nice clean and tidy toilets in the place and the cafe and facilities are easy accessible for wheelchair users and those with walking difficulties. Nice spacious outdoor area to eat/drink with little bins which are generally full and the tables invariably have used crockery and trays on them, not exactly quick to clear the tables, twice we have been and cleared a table ourselves. It is nice enough but I think we will take a picnic next time.

Came yesterday with my kids and in laws. We went for something to eat first. The food was delicious homemade soup sandwiches freshly made if there wasn't one suitable for you. The kids had the kids box and hubby had a baked potato with cheese, the cheese is like a powdered cheese quiet strong and dry. The staff are friendly although there was too members of staff I found a but rude whilst going up the wee ramp with my newborn in the buggy was forced to reverse as they continued to walk towards us talking back and forth there was no apology or thank you for letting past the people behind me had to move in order to let me back and them through I was already half way up the ramp therefore they should have waited until we had passed, this is what I was taught as a waitress and thought it was the etiquette. The landmarks within the grounds aren't well sign posted but kids had a blast on the adventure playgrounds and the walled garden. Will be back to explore more. Before we left we got ice cream from the kiosk. I heard someone asking if the ice cream had eggs in it to which the response was we don't make it we get from Ferris I think staff should have a he knowledge especially if someone has an allergy even if it's kept close to or on the freezer door

My then boyfriend and I went to the DA for our Valentine's night out. They were offering a three course meal plus a glass of bubbly for £25. On arrival, one member of staff showed us to our table, another took our drinks order and another took our food order. I ordered a cocktail. 45 minutes later, my cocktail had still not arrived. I mentioned this to our waitress and my cocktail arrived shortly afterwards. The food was excellent that evening, but when we received our bill, we had been charged for two cocktails. I pointed this error out to the staff and this error was swiftly rectified. The bill came to £61 and some pence. My boyfriend gave the waiter £70 in cash. The waiter then asked "IF WE WANTED OUR CHANGE BACK?" My boyfriend informed him that we did indeed want our change back. Having worked in the hospitality industry myself, I was shocked that a member of waiting staff felt it was appropriate to ask such a question. I pretty much always tip the waiting staff when I dine out or have some drinks, but I have never been asked this question in my life! I thought it was incredibly cheeky! The next evening I telephoned the hotel and asked to speak to the duty manager. I was told that there was no manager on duty at that time, and the young lady I spoke with on the phone asked if she could be of any assistance. I explained the events of the previous evening to her and she seemed similarly shocked by the audacity of the waiter. She assured me that a manager would call me within the next few days to discuss the matter. A week later and no one from the hotel had contacted me. I called for a second time and again no manager was available but one would contact me within the next few days. Again, no one contacted me. I called a third time about a month later. No manager available and was promised a follow up call which never happened. In hind sight I would have asked to speak to the duty manager there and then and addressed my issues that evening but I did not want to put a dampener on my romantic night out.VERY disappointed with the way this establishment 'manages' complaints. It was a DISGRACE!!!!

Despite living only a short distance from the house, this was my first visit. Can never expect good weather in December, but it was pleasantly warm when we visited. The Coach House Café was quiet when we arrived, but at least that meant we didn't have to wait long for our food to be ready. I had a jacket potato with coronation chicken and a side salad. Generous helpings and good size chunks of chicken. There was a definite 'kick' to the chicken. Excellent value for money. My friend had the breakfast plate, again a generous serving. The Coach House itself is tastefully decorated to reflect the age of the house. There were tables and chairs outside on the patio - no-one was using them today, despite the mild weather. Would imagine they will be popular in the summer. Staff were pleasant and helpful and played their part in making the visit an experience to be repeated.

Visited the café with my parents and my partner. It was 3pm on a Sunday and the place was very busy. The queue to order food was long and we waited a while to get served. When our food arrived (soup combo each) it was really delicious. Lovely homemade cream of cauliflower soup with a selection of 3 sandwiches, side salad and bread roll all for only £6.50. I thoughy for the quality of food and the amount it was very reasonable compared to Culzean for example. Beautiful surroundings also. The only downside was the slow service at the tills. We fancied a small tub of ice cream after our soup which was located in the freezer right next to the tills. I felt there should have been a separate till for ice cream sales as by the time you waited in the queue to pay for the ice cream it was about melted! Would definitely go back. Nice relaxing Sunday day out.

We were looking forward to a nice meal in lovely surroundings but unfortunately the meal , service and value for money was very disappointing. The staff were pleasant but the whole experience was a bit of a let down in comparison to the quality of food service that can had in other local Ayrshire Restaurants.

It is very disappointing when you have an Itison or Groupon voucher and you are given a different menu to other diners. Lunch was okay, but service was appalling slow - considering it wasn't actually that busy. Presumably if businesses are offering a voucher deal they are looking for business and subsequent repeat business. By treating voucher customers as inferior, they are not promoting themselves in any shape or form.

On Easter Sunday it was wiped out.The space and staff not coping well and the customers uncomfortable. My scone was solid, the clotted cream frozen in the pot!!The stables area was not being used, the grass outside turning to mud.PLEASE get the big restaurant open for weekend lunches.

We arrived at 6pm to an empty (though warm) dining room. We were advised that the main menu did not start until 7pm. Only an early bird limited choice menu was available. This was not on their website so we were unaware of it. Not a good start! After some time the waitress re-appeared saying that the chef had decided that he could cook items on the main menu but that our party had all to choose from the one menu. Otherwise it would confuse matters. (We were the only diners in the restaurant at that point). A complimentary glass of wine was gratefully received. The food was fine but we had to ask for bread (as well as a steak knife) and for some reason our table was the only one with paper napkins. Very odd that we should be singled out as we had done nothing wrong!Would we rush back? No. The prices were not commensurate with the whole experience. No childrens menu was available but chicken nuggets and chips were offered! I can cook that myself at home..

We had a very pleasant lunch here in the cafe. The food was fresh and tasty and was good value for money. The walnut and coffee cake was delicious and so light. The pricing was not excessive, e.g. £3.95 for a sandwich. Our lunch consisting of a panini, sandwich, 2 pots of tea and a cake was £15. Overall, it would have been nice to have encountered a more welcoming atmosphere but otherwise a nice lunch out. I would return again.

We were staying for 3 nights at the lodge of Dumfries house where ir was suggested as a dinner venue for 2 to drive 5 minutes away to the named bistro. We were not disappointed. The Hotel has been completely refurbished in the last few years into a modern and welcoming place. Similarly the Bistro is modernly furnished. The serving staff over the two nights we have been were very attentive and courteous and we were very well looked after. The food was particularly good and the Rib eye Steak was one of the best we had in a long time: cooked to perfection and very tender. the bill was average with any pub south of the border but with far superior standards. I would gladly return if I am in the area again.

Took my nephew for a walk round the gardens and a play in the park, stopped in for some lunch afterwards and was really disappointed. Too many staff behind the counter, was completely ignored by two members who were doing nothing, eventually ordered a sandwich for my nephew, young girl disappeared into the kitchen and didn't return until it was ready, so couldn't order anything else. Specials were mince and onion pie or quiche and there was only one soup. My partner had a sandwich and cheesecake, cheesecake had no taste. I ordered mince and onion pie which tasted just like a Greggs pie. Also ordered two lattes which came in tea cups, three mouthfuls and they were gone! All in all £17 not well spent, won't be retuning!

Having taken my sister to this restaurant for her 70th birthday celebrations & tasted the fayre served on Sunday, I did not hesitate when my husband offered to take me out to dinner here for my recent birthday treat. I was not disappointed.............in fact this visit only served to confirm my belief that this is the best kept secret in Ayrshire for fine dining. I love the concept of it,its decor , the staff are exemplary & the food is astonishingly good. Never have I tasted venison like it before- highly recommend it! Keep on doing whatever it is you are doing guys- well done!!

Rotten service spoilt the tasty macaroni cheese. Ordered Mac Cheese which came with garlic bread. Garlic burns my throat so I asked at the till for it to be replaced with ordinary bread - no problem said the cashier. Meal arrived with the garlic bread on the plate. Asked for it to be changed only to be told it couldn't be done as they don't do substitutes. Thankfully it wasn't allergy issue!

Visited recently and could not believe how bad the food was. Slice sausage was the cheapest of cheap frozen rubbish from Farmfoods or the likes of it. Chicken curry was simply not edible, again cheap frozen junk and the food was over priced.

Have eaten a few times here over the last year. Visited again this week and was disappointed at the portion sizes that have clearly shrunk. We overheard the table beside us comment too. I’d rather be charged a couple of quid extra for the same portion size rather than see them shrink and keep the prices. The chicken Caesar salad look like a starter portion and the Tablet Sundae comes a with a really long spoon but a very shallow dish. Strange decisions have been made by management! Staff were very friendly, though.

This is a great local cafe. The staff are friendly and food is freshly made and tasty. Child friendly. Homemade cakes are also yummy.

Very poor service and charged 20% service charge without giving option to remove it, certainly won't be eating here again
