Overall good experience. The staff were really lovely, attentive & were helpful in changing our booking (there was a family health emergency so we were really delayed making it to Skye). Nice atmosphere. Our starters & mains were good but found dessert was quite basic. Also, the Caramelised onion soup for starter was nothing special. I would give 4 star over 5 as I think for what it is, it is overpriced. £21 for Fish & Chips, £29 for duck. Which is similar, if not higher to price points of The Ivy Restaurants in London. The banana crumble was good, however, small for £9 a portion. I found the Sticky Toffee a bit dry/plain and the ice cream quite basic (which the menu states comes as 3 scoops, so you end up paying £7.50 for ice cream). For parking, there is limited space directly outside the hotel/restaurant, so I would factor in time to find a parking spot when arriving.

Ok, but overall underwhelming. The beef burger was genuinely nice, though both of the pies we had were just ok, each served barely warm, with the token pastry lids (nice, crisp and flaky) perched on top. The chicken and leek pie at least was a hearty serve, and the chicken breast was cooked well and broke up nicely to mix with the sauce and vegetables, however there was no real taste to speak of. The Crofter's pie was however disappointing in every way, portion, temperature and flavour. The staff were lovely and polite, though clearly quite busy with a full restaurant. I'd definitely pick something else rather than go again.

This was a bizarre experience overall. I think Skye just has a low caliber setting for culinary experiences. After this I am considering investing in and monopolizing the entire restaurant scene in Portree. Originally, I booked it because it looked modern and offered more than fish and chips and was excited to try it. I was disappointed. They ran out of lamb, their first listed entree by 1930. I got mustard chicken salad which was like something akin to what they serve at New York City's JFK Airport international terminal. Their waitstaff shouted at each other the whole time. One even said telling people away was his favorite part when they were booked. Soup was decent. My server was nice. Honestly, they should just invest in a handy sign to post outside when they're booked full.

Some of the best mussels we have had this trip. The lobster was also very good. But what took the cake was the whisky ice cream. It had just enough whisky for its name, and the flecks of oast gave a good contrasting texture to that of the ice cream. Well worth a visit when in town.

My wife and I happened upon Dulse and Brose while we were staying in Portree just on a whim and we were not disappointed. The quality of food was incredible, delicious eats and the presentation was very nice as well. We had the pleasure of being served by Mark who was incredibly personable and always attentive whenever he was walking passed. My wife and I enjoyed the restaurant so much that we went back for dinner the next night and we were luckily served by Mark again! 100% would recommend and would definitely return next time we’re in Portree!

I don’t understand the other negative reviews. I feel that the people commenting about service just maybe haven’t travelled much? The service was more than adequate. They were quite efficient if I’m to be honest. I don’t look for the front of house to slam rainbows down my throat. They were pleasant, quick, and informative. They looked to work well as a team and one of the back of house even came out to bring dishes to tables when the wait staff was busy. People’s interpretation of good service can vary, but this place has done well. Our food? Absolutely out of this world. Best venison I’ve ever had, cooked and seasoned to perfection. Haggis Bon Bon’s were delicious with a small dressed salad. Dessert of caramelised bananas with rum and raisin ice cream was faultless. My husband throughly enjoyed his burger, mushrooms on toast and lemon posset. We talked about it afterwards and wished we ate there all week!

We had a delicious dinner here. I ordered the chicken pie, which was so comforting —perfectly seasoned. My husband said the fish and chips he ordered were the best he’s had. We also had some yummy honeycomb ice cream for dessert. But what stood out even more was the fantastic hospitality the staff showed us. I see the restaurant is a popular choice considering portree doesn’t have that many restaurants. But it’s not a warm place for sure, specially not for brown people. Did sense a bit of racism happening. We sat at the bar and ordered food like many were ordering and the waitress said ‘now we have stopped serving’ which was horrible. Wouldn’t recommend going specially not if it’s season time since they sure can’t handle it.

Absolutely top notch food by the chef; excellent in every way. After an initial issue with our order, which delayed our food by an hour, our host salvaged the situation admirably with a sincere explanation and apology, and compting the drinks. As per other reviews, this restaurant seems to have some server training issues, but this host, and the chef are second to none.

The worst experience I’ve ever had in a restaurant, bar none. Not a good start to my first visit to Skye. Notwithstanding that the food was lacking in flavour and substance is besides the point, the service was absolutely horrendous. My polite requests were either met with disregard or blatantly ignored which was infuriating to say the least. The last thing you’d expect from a server is to be treated as if you’re an inconvenience. I had been a waitress in high end restaurants for over 10 years’ , and had I ever treated customers in such a manner I would have been fired on the spot. Hopefully the management will do something about a certain petite dark haired waitress. I would highly recommend ordering fish & chips to be shared with seagulls as a more enjoyable experience.

Overpriced for the portion you are getting. Dessert were 9£ each with a cookie and a scoope of ice cream. I had the sole , which was delicous, but my partner’s Sunday’s roast was so-so, potatoes are dried and under seasoned. The Skye beer I ordered wasn’t cold enough. I like the tartan cushion at the seats and layout of restaurant. We found ourselves wanting to eat more food elsewhere after the meal.

We had high expectations for this restaurant and were sadly disappointed. My meal was very good but my wife’s was not, but because the service was so awful. We never could get the attention of server to let them know after the initial server took our order. She continually walked by us throughout the evening. Another server came by to bring our food, but never checked up on us. The large mandatory service charge added in seemed quite ridiculous given the situation. This restaurant needs to get its staffing in order.

The bill is £35.44 (service charge and VAT already included) but charged me £36.44 Besides, I ordered a lemon posset from a young lady but then another young lady chatted with her right away. It seemed that she forgot my order, so after waiting for more than 10 minutes, a senior lady who seemed to be the head waitress came to me and asked me to leave, for my time was out and there was nothing left on my order. Food was okay but not exceptional, service was terrible. However, decorations are good. And the young man at the reception desk was also amiable.

The best thing I can say about this restaurant is that the presentation and descriptions of the food were amazing. Everything else was lackluster. The chicken was dry, and the only flavor in the dish was the whole peppercorns in the sauce. The lemon sole was fine. The only decent sever was the person who led us to our table and treated us like we were individuals (and it was his first day)—everyone else treated us like we were an inconvenience (even going to far as to ask to grab our plates as we finished the last bites of our dishes). We ended up finishing our dinner within an hour and just wanted to leave—the whole experience left us particularly disappointed. Definitely would not recommend.

The duck tasted very good, but no adult can get enough of the two small strips of meat, and the fries don't help either. We would still rate the food as very good.

Big mess... the guy at the reception does not do his job correctly (he asks you to wait at the bar, but forgot about you..we had to come back several time to get the table) finally we've got a table 30min after our reservation time and we only ordered a main dish that arrives 45min after So for a table reserved at 8.00pm we were served at 9.20pm The waitress and the bar tender were really busy and try to take care of the table but clearly restaurant is understaffed. And the main person responsible does not help at all. However food was good and tasty, but a dinner is a whole thing

Based on recommendations from local guides we booked this restaurant for our visit in Portree, did not meet the expectations based on historical reviews. Service was quite slow (not getting drinks while waiting for the food, time to order etc.) and the restaurant was not even half-full this evening. The starters were OK (risotto and starched donut) but the main course was not satisfying. We ordered the halibut, receiving a plate with three small bites of fish wrapped in Parma ham, dots of roasted potato purée, and some greens. Halfway through dinner it also started leaking water from the ceiling.

Make sure to reserve ahead of time for timely service. My partner and I had the duck, cheese plate, and a bottle of wine. The duck did not come with sides which were for purchase at an extra cost. The cheese plate was good although the bread offerings were sparse and the server nor the menu explained what cheeses we were trying. The bathrooms were clean and service was quick given how busy they were.

We had a reservation for 4 at 8:15 p.m., and upon arriving we were told to wait at the bar for 10 minutes for our table to be ready. So we had a drink at the bar while waiting, and 30 minutes later, no one had come to pick us up: we had to go and ask the waiter who had clearly forgotten us... Once seated at the table, we noticed that our glasses were dirty (hair in the glasses) and we asked the waiter to change them, who first told us that they had come out of the dishwasher before finally kindly changing them. We ordered the smoked salmon as a starter which was way too expensive for what it was: 3 very small pieces of salmon for +10 GBP, that was a bit excessive... At the end of the meal, we asked for the menu. desserts and our server told us that the kitchen had been closed for more than 10 minutes and of course, they had not warned us before. In short, a service clearly not at the price level of this restaurant. To end on a good note, the dishes were good even if once again, in very small quantities for a price that was way too high. In short, move on, there are much nicer restaurants

Good food, nice decor, spoiled by perfunctory and indifferent service With the understanding that the restaurants on Skye can get quite busy, we heeded the advice to book a table in advance. We booked for 17:15, the latest time available on the Dulse & Brose reservation system and fine for us, we’re happy to eat early. We arrived on-time to a stylish, handsome, warmly decorated, mostly empty restaurant (we may have been the 3rd table seated). We were shown to a table, when I asked if we could possibly be seated in one of the cozy 2-person booths, we were told it was not possible, their tables had all been reserved and to move from one 2-top to another would be problematic. OK, fair enough, maybe they have some inflexible reservation management software. We were seated with one incomplete menu (no drinks list) and no whiskey menu. When the server came to take our order, we asked about whiskeys, were then given the ~5 page book and asked which one we wanted, expecting a reply at that moment. While my husband took a brief second to glance at the whiskeys I ordered our appetizer and main courses, a pre-dinner Prosecco for myself, and a bottle of wine. Not having had time to explore the whiskey list, my husband then ordered a favorite he already knew. Shortly thereafter, our delicious soups and homemade bread arrived - well before the whiskey, the Prosecco or the wine. When the person we assumed was the floor manager, the one who told us it was not possible to have a different table, asked how the soup was, I said it was delicious, but that we were feeling rushed. The (paraphrased) response was “We’re a very busy restaurant, this is bistro food, you are not expected to linger over your meal“. With the soup finished, the whiskey finally came, as did the wine, we cancelled the Prosecco, which, like the whiskey, was intended as a pre-dinner cocktail. Our dinners arrived promptly, they were delicious and beautifully presented. To the servers credit, he did stop to ask if the food was fine, and as soon as I could say “yes, it’s good”, he was walking away, his back to us, as his gave his reply. We did go on to share a dessert. All clocked-in, we were done in ~1 hour, 10 minutes. As with many restaurants, the service was included. We’re usually good tippers (having been in the restaurant business ourselves), but this time, we didn’t add any additional gratuity because we didn’t feel any was earned. Before running our credit card, the server did look to see if we’d increased the bill, and it was evident from his expression, he was disappointed that we had not. Oh, and when we left, those cozy booths we had asked to be seated in were still empty and the restaurant was about half-full (but getting busier as you would expect closer to 19:00). My advice, look elsewhere to dine if possible.

This was our first night in Skye and what an absolutely disappointment… I am not sure this place got such good reviews. The service was not even there . No one even checked in to take our order or bothered to check how our food was. We had to request for our water to be filled several times I have never had such poor service. The service team was completely incompetent and disinterested. They honestly looked like they wanted to just be somewhere else. We were so looking forward to a good meal but this was truly a disappointment . I am sure there are a lot better restaurants with wonderful hospitality. Stay away from this one.

Was looking forward to here as the menu sounded great. The pork belly starter was excellent. Unfortunately my main, the short rib burger was a bit dense and dry for my taste. My girlfriend had the beef cheek which was pretty good though so points for that. Desserts potentially looked good but didn't have the hunger for it on this visit. Would definitely recommend making a booking if you can as we tried twice before doing so and were turned away (out hiking, couldn't commit to a time). There is a service charge even on smaller tables (we were two) so not discretionary.

After a long journey from Dundee to Portree by car we got into Portree rather late and were starving for some food! We had tried a few other places but they were all packed and fully booked - we obviously had no bookings for anywhere so we worried if we would even get any food for the night! Luckily we nipped into here and they very kindly squeezed us in for a meal. The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully made and the service was great too - we had a few different people serve us and check up on us but all 3 of them were kind with us. I had chocolate fondant for dessert and I almost cried with how good it tasted! Probably one of the best puddings I have ever had in my life. For our first meal in Portree, they definitely set the standard for us! Can't recommend more.

I reserved a table for three at the restaurant, and overall, our experience was positive until we finished our meal. The waiter, after confirming we didn't need anything else, unexpectedly brought the bill, saying there's no rush but presenting it. We were having a conversation, and he later approached us, prompting payment by cash or card. We arrived at 5:40 and left by 6:50, not overstaying, and the restaurant was relatively empty. It would have been better if they communicated the need for the table rather than rushing us, especially since it was my friend's first visit to Scotland, and I had mentioned how friendly Scots are. Despite the service hiccup, we paid a 15% service fee.

We were asked to wait 10-15 minutes at the bar which we happily did. After 45 minutes we popped back into check in and were told they'd given our table away despite looking right at us several times and never telling us the table was ready. We left and won't be returning. The bar is in the next room. We were not hard to find and went where we were told.

One of the restaurants recommended by Sky Island was rejected for walk-in on the first day, so I made a reservation for dinner on the second day in advance. Such an oasis in Portree! After walking to 7 restaurants who were either closed, short staffed or had menus that were 🫤 we found this. Firstly it was warm, romantic and has great ambience and music. We had the muscles, scallops to start which were delectable. The mains were the mushroom and artichoke risotto and the pheasant dish just gorgeous. Warm and cozy restaurant in Portee. We had made a reservation for later in the evening but due to our tour ending early we stopped by to see if we could get in and had no issues even though it was fairly busy. We had the savory donuts as a starter and the peanut butter cookies for dessert, both were delicious. Unfortunately the Beef Cheeks were a bit dry. While we might not make it back to Portee anytime soon, when we do we would love to try Dulse and Brose again!

Great location, atmosphere. Bread was delicious. Scallops were tasty (2 in a portion). Vegetarian Risotto was hearty in taste and portion size. Husband got the ribeye special, overall good but the meat was buried under salad and various accutromonts.

This was the best meal we had on Skye. The food was delicious. The service staff was working really hard and did outstanding even though they were understaffed that evening, but all in all a really pleasant experience. Make sure you make reservations ahead of time because they are very full!

The soup of the day and artisan bread were unbelievable, and so hit the spot after a rainy day of exploring. Unfortunately, our entrees were a bit greasy and I felt sick after the meal. Perhaps we just truly ordered the wrong thing and other options would be better, but I was disappointed.

Exceptional dining experience! The staff were incredibly welcoming and the food was nothing short of delicious. Unfortunately, they seated us near the door for breakfast while everyone else enjoyed the cozier inner parts of the restaurant. It took 10 minutes before we were asked what we'd like to drink, and the coffee came without milk. It was another 15-20 minutes before the hot food arrived. We had such a great experience. We had accidentally made a reservation for the wrong day and they were able to squeeze us in anyways. The food was really incredible and very unique. Definitely the best meal we had on our trip. The gammon, mushroom bruschetta, scallops and black tea pudding were out of this world. The staff were also so sweet and helpful. 10/10

The restaurant can be full, but I have rarely been treated so rudely. No thanks. Edit: We don't hold grudges and by luck we got a place on another day. The food (mushroom bruschetta, salmon, game with an incredible sauce) was very good. The service is also good. Price reasonable. This increases the rating to 4/5.

Food was wonderful, we had the seafood platter to start and it was great. Unfortunately we were really disappointed in the service. Once we put our order in we were ignored except for having the food dropped off. We would have ordered another drink and wanted to get a dessert but it took forever for someone to stop back by to give us our check and then more time to take our payment. If the service was better it'd be 5stars.

My sister and I traipsed around Portree looking for somewhere to have a drink or eat and everywhere was completely fully booked. We managed to get served in the pub attached to Dulse and Brose and a table became free later on. We were served by the gorgeous Kevin who couldn't do enough for us; he was so lovely, we could have chatted with him for hours. The food was delicious. We had the fried duck ball and beetroot and cheese salad. Everything was fresh and perfectly seasoned. We booked in again for Saturday - can't wait.

The best part of the menu is the artisan bread, which was a pumpkin bread tonight. It was really good bread. Could’ve made a meal out of the bread and butter. Otherwise the carrot soup of the day was tasty. The rest of the menu just seemed overall lacking in options. Salmon or fried haddock as far as seafood goes. The chips are way too big. Might as well eat multiple baked potatoes. The service wasn’t great. Felt rushed out the door. I was hoping to order dessert but instead got the check. Just left.

I visited Skye for the Women Won't Wheesht event and enjoyed a beautiful meal in Dulse and Brose. I can recommend the Wild Mushroom Bruchetta and the Lamb Burger. I was delighted to find they'd a decent alcohol free beer in stock too. They could perhaps do with more staff as they were run off their feet, yet managed to remain friendly and attentive. Prices were reasonable and the food was quality. The view outside is stunning too.

We booked a reservation here (very necessary) based on reviews that this was the best meal several people had in Scotland. We were disappointed. The waitstaff were inattentive except when we called to them, and the menu was uninspiring. The ribeye was one of the worst I’ve ever had, if not the worst (very tough), and my wife’s gammon was tough and lacked flavor. The one upside was the drink selection - great rum and gin menu. We likely won’t be back, unless the service and menu improve. I’ve seen great menu items mentioned in past reviews!

Do not get their Mackerel with Hazelnut pesto. Salmon overcooked. Price range is not worth it. Service was terrible and slow. Staff knows nothing about their spirits or food. Saw someone spit out a desert while eating it. GET THE BASICS IF YOU COME HERE. For a place with that many cookbooks on their wall you would think they were good at adventurous things. Stick to things that are hard to get wrong. You would think salmon were easy but that too was very dry. Maybe fish and chips? More below: Mackerel dish was on the Specials list. Hazelnut Pesto was an adventurous choice, and it proved to be the entire price point of the dish; the hazelnut flavour was extremely overwhelming. I expected it to be Nutella at that point. Dish was advertised to have roasted squash. There were about two pieces of an inch and a half long and the rest was a squash purée. Dish was way too saucy. And they decided to drown pieces of kale into it as well. The Mackerel is a very flakey fish. Therefore, when I was dining my plate became mush. It was barely filling in any capacity. Seems they like to drown salads/ lettuce because the starter salad with blue cheese had immense amounts of cheese: both chunks and it completely covered lettuce. About Service. Was about to order dessert, but it took over 15 minutes for the server to bring the desert menu to us when she walked by multiple times, hands-free, before she came to us again. We asked for the check. Good thing we did because the man next to us had basically dribbled out some part of his ice cream brownie desert. Atmosphere was good but would have been better with servers who were attentive and knew about anything. Overheard manager talk about how the place has been so busy since March. Said that everyone was having a really hard time. So props for the staff but I think that because of the popularity of this place and likely staff burnout and turnover, they cannot keep up with quality. Look elsewhere.

Very bad and rude service with manager “Samantha” (that's what she told us, she even lied about her own name). Her name is actually Angela - Director of Operations - not sure what she is actually doing “service” in the restaurant, whom is person rushing us from very beginning. Told us to hurry up with our order at 6.40pm even though we still waiting for 1 more person. Then give us bill to pay at 7.40pm, but we suppose to have our table until 8.15pm. I am also their sister hotel customer as. We had been very badly treated, Rush rush rush us all the time. In the end she kicked us out at 8.00. My advice is to avoid this place. She should be fired as manager or director as well. Don't go to this restaurant. It has the worst manager I have ever met. The food there is mediocre. From the moment you enter, you are urged to eat more, which definitely doesn't let you concentrate on eating.

We had a lovely dinner here. I had the haddock and my husband had the steak. My fish was delicious!! We also loved the cabernet they had. Service was friendly. It was quite warm inside which was a bit uncomfortable but nothing I couldn't love with. We loved our meal and our experience here. Get a reservation when it's on season. It gets busy! I definitely recommend this place!

Food and atmosphere are great. However, the waiter that served us (17 year old with long blond hair) was totally unprofessional and unpleasant. He pushed us to order everything at once and made sarcastic remarks when we ordered food and drinks. We complained to the restaurant manager who listened carefully and apologized very professionally.

Een echt schots bistro’tje. En wat een lieve man staat er in de bediening. Enorm mee gelachen, ontzettend gastvrij en heerlijk makkelijk, maar lekker eten. In Forse konden we niet zoveel vinden qua lekkere restaurants, dus het was de moeite waard om 20 minuutjes omhoog te rijden voor dit restaurantje!

An absolute gem—the best dining experience in Portree! Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious. If you're planning to visit, make sure to book 1–2 months in advance, as there aren’t many restaurants in town and it fills up quickly. We enjoyed 5 outstanding dishes. Truly a must-visit spot for an unforgettable meal!
