We called in on New Year’s Eve for lunch an was surprised at the range of vegan choices. The owner was really helpful and lovely and her husband who was the Chef also came up to check the food was okay. We ended up having 4 vegan side dishes to share with rice and roti. Good portion size and everything was delicious. Highly recommend and we will be back. Thank you. No photos of good as too busy eating 😋

Such a disappointment. On the day we went it was cash only and some things I had to ask the waiters for twice like a drink (no water was offered) and a fork as I’d used the only one on the table for my starter so I was sat staring at my meal for about five minutes as well as trying to get a waiter’s attention for about five minutes. The food was lovely although disheartening as we had apparently looked at an older menu and some things were now no longer available since Covid. Also the prices have sharply risen since then it seems! My meal with a starter (the samosa which is highly recommended), poppadom (the pickled lime possibly the best I’ve tasted), and sharing rice and a naan (which is very dry) with my friend came to £45 with two pints of kingfisher on draft. The main meal was £18. I’ve been to restaurants in central London that charge less than this where you get bigger portions as well, I walked away still feeling hungry and also very surprised no kulfi was on the menu either. I feel the restaurant need to up their game a little. The decor is a bit tired as well. Like I say, an overall disappointment and considering where it is this could be a superb restaurant and even gives you that sense of promise with the well written menu too. Won’t be rushing back for the sake of lime pickle and a rather nice samosa (also very overpriced at £10.50). Do trust previous reviews. It’s not the worst in Cardiff but it’s not the best and is very average and extremely overpriced for what you get, plus frustrating the “classic” curries are £6-£8 extra for meat options… I don’t believe even the best Indian restaurant in town (this is another Benghali restaurant btw) charge £18 just for a meal nor £5 for rice. It’s just far too expensive for the portion sizes and the quality of the food and the service isn’t the best. Friendly enough but also even though it wasn’t particularly busy they looked like they couldn’t be bothered or were on auto pilot. I believe the manageress was in and she was friendly enough however. Other Indian style restaurants are in the bay and dare I say actually taste better and offer better value for money over in the red dragon centre. A real shame.

Extremely expensive and the food isn’t good enough for the price. All of the dishes, even the mild ones were too spicy. You can’t choose which meat you have in the curry’s which made us think it’s all pre-made. The waiter kept randomly laughing when he came to the table. Also weird that on Sundays it’s cash only. All in all a strange experience, we wouldn’t go back

Recently visited before going to see Hamilton - such a convenient location for a meal before going to see a show. Lovely atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff and great choice of vegetarian/vegan options, one of the best I’ve seen in Cardiff! The meals we had were delicious, only slight disappointment was that the sides were quite a small portion, almost too small to share. Great value for money though and would definitely visit again.

Been to duchess of delhi many many times over the years Really nice food , good service , good amounts of food etc But wow wow wow We decided to order a takeaway last weekend First/it was quite expensive still for 20% off 1st order considering it's a takeaway compared to other Indian takeaway places around cardiff but was still happy to go ahead off many pervious visits Second /wrong curry given and nann bread missing from order Third /2 person poppadoms selected in order only got 2 poppadoms given Fourth/rang restaurant to explain order was wrong and missing items and only 2 poppadoms for 2 people, they offered to to replace what was wrong +missing if I drove the 20mins drive back to restaurant at 9pm at night that was not convenient man (waiter) started to change he's tone quickly over the phone once I said I'm not happy then lady came on phone (owner) offered money back for only missing items and the wrong curry minus the 20% explain to them at the very least it should be totally replace the order as it was an eatable for my partner so personally the whole order should have been replaced so agreed for just the items missing to be refunded she asked to email the restaurant the bank details and she would refund so 3 email sent over a week still no refund very disappointed in the restaurant will not ever be returning or recommending again which I have done for years lost a loyal customer and yes thanks for the non apology ever given also

Just picked up take away at 18:20. Note have had food from here before which was ok. Today everything was Terribly spicy. Biryani was edible (client likes a lot of spice!) Saagwala was extremely spicy. I could not eat it. And the Dhal I mean who makes spicy dhal is all I can say. Phoned just to provide feedback and state that I had made scramble eggs & spinach for my daughter and I. Barely acknowledged my feedback. Therefore deserving of this review. I often give low rated restaurants benefit of doubt just so I can judge for myself. Today I learnt with Duchess of Delhi that they do strive to live up to their dismal reviews. I just ordered a takeaway but had to collect - and the restaurant was full (of empty chairs and tables). The food was generally unpalatable, inappropriately spiced and flavourless - all I could get was the heat of chilli and a coating of oil. They weren’t interested in hearing my feedback when phoned (after all they have a 3.9 score on Google - which really is positive because it is on the right side of 2.5). But hey, who cares? For a curry house that occupies some super prime land in Cardifff, they seemed happy with just my meagre custom. Perhaps the management is uninterested in keeping up appearances. Otherwise they would have had patrons on tables enjoying a beer whilst waiting for a delectable curry - even on a Tuesday school night! Anyway, lesson learnt. Public reviews are generally accurate. Most places that serve you well will earn 4.5 stars or more - no matter how cheap or expensive they are. The ones with less than that are not worth visiting or entertaining or supporting. The Duchess of Delhi is one of them. Sad, but that’s my truth. Please tell yours…

As someone who was born and raised in Delhi and has been living in the UK for the past five years, I have to say this was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. I recently visited a restaurant Duchess of Delhi that claims to bring the authentic flavors of Delhi to its patrons, but the reality couldn't have been further from the truth. Right from the start, things went downhill. The restaurant has an absurd policy that they won’t serve starters unless you order a main course first. As a Delhiite, I know the joy of sampling a range of appetizers and sharing them with friends and family, but this restaurant seems determined to rob customers of that experience. When we asked to order just a few starters, we were met with rude and dismissive responses from the staff. Their attitude was nothing short of horrible, and it was clear they had no interest in providing a welcoming or enjoyable dining experience. The behavior of the staff was shocking—they were not only unhelpful but downright rude. It was as if our presence was an inconvenience to them, and every request was met with a scowl or a curt reply. I have never felt so unwelcome in a place that is supposed to offer hospitality. To the owners, I would like to say: stop using the name of Delhi. The city I come from is known for its incredible food, warm hospitality, and vibrant culture. This restaurant is a disgrace to that reputation, and it certainly doesn’t deserve to be associated with Delhi in any way. If you’re looking for a place that respects its customers and serves great food, avoid this place at all costs. This was a deeply disappointing experience, and I won’t be returning and also the guy asked us to leave if we didn’t order main course.

Vistited on a Saturday early evening with my Son who had been here before and raved about the food. He had a Prawn Biryani and I had the Chicken Naga Jhaal Jhol (a hot dish) which was amazing with a fantastic after taste. These and the side dishes were simply presented and let the taste do the talking. Great location across the way from the Millenium centre with polite and professional staff. Im surprised at some of the negative reviews - no air conditioning for the three days a year when its needed, small portions? I was stuffed when we left there with just two extra side dishes added to the main course and rice......unfortunately there will always be a small band of people who will find something to moan about, no matter how trivial it is! From both my Sons previous meals there and my own visit, don't be put off, the food here is outstanding.

The food quality was good, though for 17-18£ main course, I expect a bit more. I ordered mango curry and I loved it, it was delicious but as it’s not served with rice or bread, I feel the portion needs to be a bit bigger. The drinks were average. For dessert, only gulab jamun was Indian so I ordered it and it was very delicious but we didn’t like strawberry icecream, as there were pieces of ice in it! We selected this restaurant on account of its position (opposite the Cardiff Millennium Centre) and the mostly favourable reviews. What a shoddy disappointment! From the outside it is a terraced property with peeling paint on rusting railings in front of crumbling steps to a basement. To the side of the main entrance is a tacky pub with smokers and vapourers standing outside with their drinks on a large wooden beer barrel. Perhaps this is all a leftover from the notorious Tiger Bay area. Inside we were led to a scrubbed pine table with peeling varnish. The large menu card offered some hope, but the reality was so sad and disappointing. Poppadoms were very thin and curled up so that they disintegrated into tiny pieces as soon as they were touched. They were accompanied with a tray of three chutneys, which were all so watery and runny that they could only be served onto a plate with a spoon and could not be dipped or ladled onto the poppadoms. A starter, we only had one, was 'Duchess Calamari' supposedly accompanied by a tamarind chutney. About 6 very thinly sliced rings from what must have been a very small squid were presented with a spice-hot liquid, not a chutney. Our enquiry about the hotness of main course choices was met with total incomprehension, as the non -english- speaking waiter tried to read the menu card. My main course was Beef Rendang (£22.75) which the menu claimed had 20 ingredients. The beef was tender but the mushy sauce seemed to have just chilli as the only tastable content, masking anything else that might otherwise have been in the sauce. My partner unwisely chose the Goan Green Chicken Curry (also £22.75) which she told me contained very basic cheap chicken pieces with a sauce so chilli-hot that it was almost inedible. Both our main dishes were accompanied with steamed rice with little or no flavour or seasoning and a chapati which had the texture of cardboard. So no dessert or coffee, but nevertheless a bill of a few pence less than £70 ( one tea and one beer) plus a rather small tip of £5. We will not be returning and suggest that others might reconsider putting this establishment on their wish list

Great vegan curry this evening and so close to the Millennium Centre. I’ve been here several times before and will come again for certain. Especially charming service from a family-owned restaurant but it’s the food I come here for. Excellent. Thank you.

Had a lovely meal here with the wider family, some very unique dishes that I’m glad I tried, really recommend the Goan green chicken curry, never had anything like it and was very pleased, my wife had the Lamb Vin D’alho a clever play on words for a curry with some Portuguese influences and with wine vinegar. The price is high but didn’t feel ripped off.

Extremely expensive and below average food. City road has a lot of Indian/desi food restaurants with better taste and half of price. Owner lady is extremely rude and arrogant. Order arrived extremely late and the staff behaves like they are giving you free food and you are not paying anything. I don't know why this place is overhyped. Please don't go if you don't want your day to be ruined. Lastly almost every Indian restaurant offers at least 10 % student discount. When asked about the student discount the owner lady said, we like to add-on bill if you want to pay more than ask only.

This place is terrible not even worth for 1 star. Staff don’t know how to talk with customers. Pathetic food taste, even though the Lady who asked for feedback. She has different attitude. I suggest who ever planning to visit store. Please don’t visit. Disappointed with service and food I spend 100£. Which is not even worth for 5£ food.

A nice interior but well below average food in small portions priced very high. Ridiculous mark ups on the drinks. The service was poor and unfriendly. Avoid, there are loads of better places near by.

Lovely range of dishes and a great vegetarian selection, warning though, it's all quite spicy. Only downside was they only accept cash on Sundays, which is odd as they accept card the rest of the week. The Peshawari Naan was the best I've ever had, but the paneer masala lacked something. The mango lassy was very tasty though

This is a pathetic place. Apparently, you have to order separate main course for each person? What stupid rule is that? They charge like 18 pounds+ for each dish and say the portion is small? Then what for are you taking 18 pounds? The waiter was a dimwit and had attitude. When we said we will have starters and drinks and then main course, they said they do not serve only starters. To hell with your restaurant. Hope you guys close down soon and learn a lesson. Wannabe "delhi" restaurant it is. I would never recommend such a pathetic place to anyone.

I'm not a person who gives out reviews mostly. Honestly this was the worst place i've been to that too with my family. The waiter was so rude in front of other guests as well, as he owned the place. We had no choice but to walk out and the food felt so disrespectful, so looked down upon by the bi@£; a@@ owner. Never ever going back there. She literally followed us while we left the place and gave a nasty look. Like the karens' but for real.

This came well recommended. Good service, but to be honest I’m always a bit suss when there are two different textures to the chunks of meat inside the sauce. And the sauce was a bit claggy to be honest.

Two diners, one vegan, one not. Both catered for. Good food, well prepared. It's worth mentioning that it's cash only on a Sunday. We were warned when we ordered, so no problem. I'm from North West England, so some things were unfamiliar. The poppadoms came already broken into pieces, and there were only three chutneys. Up north we're used to unbroken poppadoms and five chutneys. The other minor quibble was no-one was able to make any of the cocktails on the menu, but again that was because it was a Sunday. Plenty of other options, so not a major problem. A good selection of beers and lagers available.

Overpriced food, got 4 pieces of chicken per curry. Awful atmosphere with staff running upstairs and all over the restaurant, whispering. And another very stern member of staff put us off going completely. Drinks took 20+ minutes to come each time. Got starters before drinks. Very strange atmosphere. Would avoid!

Thumbs up for their pasta. I love it when you can make your own dish, my favorite is simple, pasta and cheese sauce topped with chilli flakes. Or hash brown and cheese sauce with chilli flakes. Warm hearty goodness. They also have a pasta of the month, worth checking out every now and then!
