Fish & Chips done in beef fat.. they are on another level..mushy peas to die for. Try the Steak & Chips with gravy..lovely..as well. Money well spent.

Call me Ishmael, the fish was as like a white whale on a plate. Fantastic food and great service, can highly recommend. Massive portions of chips and we only had regular size portions Alcoholic drinks in a chippy, something different Slight wait for the food but it was school half term so the place was packed, the waiting staff were brilliant and couldn’t apologise enough. Truly great value for money and we’ll definitely visit again next time we come to York

It was my birthday yesterday ( 15th Feb) and I wanted to spend it in YORK , we had wanted to go to a pie n mash place but it was Saturday and everywhere was full , we stumbled upon this place and although it too was busy they managed to squeeze us in . The service was OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish everyone treated you like this , The food was ABSOLUTELY 💯 PERFECT I've never had fish n chips as good EVER and we regularly visit THE MAGPIE WHITBY . My mouth is honestly watering while writing this review. Next time I'm in YORK I'm heading straight back here . One last thing I love mushy peas but proper genuine mushy peas well these were so good OMG I actually had 2 full ramekins and couldn't stop , sadly mushy peas usually upset me so I was waiting for the inevitable but I am delighted to say I'm fine no issues so guys I can't express this enough this is THE BEST FISH N CHIPS EVER in my opinion!!!!!!!!!! Thank you to DRAKES and it's wonderful STAFF who served us for help making my birth special ❤️ Thank you Xx

Great old fashioned fish and chips, perfect on a cold day!

We went for lunch on 1/31 to eat fish & chips; Even though we hadn't booked, they made us sit in the queue at the entrance waiting for our turn, and they accompanied us to our table in less than five minutes! Good dishes and good local beer. Price a little lower than average.

I recently visited this fish and chip shop while exploring the city. It has a great location, making it a convenient stop for a meal. The interior was warm and comfortable, which was nice on a cold day, and there was plenty of seating available, so we didn’t have to wait for a table. However, I found the food to be quite disappointing. For the price, I expected better quality, but unfortunately, the fish and chips lacked flavor and weren’t very tasty. Given the higher prices, I had hoped for a more enjoyable meal. Another downside was that there was only one toilet available for all customers, which could be inconvenient during busy times. Overall, while the location and seating were good, the food did not meet expectations, and the prices felt too high for what was offered. I personally wouldn’t return, but with some improvements to the flavor and pricing, it could be a much better experience.

Delicious fish and chips. I especially loved the batter, light and crispy and best I’ve had in England. Really really fantastic!

Delicious chips. Walked past and the smell was so good. We ended up coming back for a bag of chips. Only ordered a portion of chips and was asked if we wanted scraps. They were so yummy and reasonably priced.

Usually we treat ourselves to a regular fish and chips portion walking home. Today I have had an unpleasant experience. The regular size wasn’t the usual size I asked if the business Decided changing the portion of the regular. I doubted the lady’s testimony only because she had an arrogant attitude to oats me as she noticed my accent was Foreign. Reasons I wanted to speak to the manager. The manager was the chef I also doubt he was the manager same attitude arrogants! I noticed the mocking and left! To all the visitors of York mostly the tourists please be vigilant of what you buy. Some business will take advantage just because you are Foreign they will feel Entitled of taking advantage! Hope the owners will take the above to consideration . The lady I know serving was very friendly and professional!!! I am afraid to say today was my last visit!!!

Delicious food, friendly service and a cozy, cozy atmosphere

The batter is just perfect, sadly it was not so tasty as I expected it but the plate is a must, the chips were good and the service just right. They also have take away so is really convenient.

In my opinion Drake's is the best fish and chip restaurant in York. The quality of the fish is unsurpassed, the chips are perfection, and I don't even know what they do to their mushy peas to make them taste that good. The restaurant is cosy, and gets busy, but the friendly service makes every visit a joy.

This is the best Haddock and chips I've had outside of Hull.

Decent fish and chips, although a fairly small portion. The "extensive wine list" mentioned on the menu turned out to be two bottles, one of which wasn't chilled. The deep fried mince pie was a bit of dare, and as bad as it sounds - damp, oily and with a slight hint of fish

Went with a group whilst visiting York. Chips were mediocre, nothing special. Fish was wet , slimy and mushy, not edible. You’re seated in a room in a house, very awkward. And to top it all off the bill came to £100!! For four portions of fish and chips! Never heard anything like it, food was not worth that money. Wouldn’t visit again.

Fish and chips are not greasy, so you can eat them crunchy, but if the taste doesn't change, you'll get bored. It's a bit bulky.

I only had as a take out (but there is s restaurant). Cooked in beef dripping so not good for you - but the flavours are 100%. I can't recall ever having better.

Best fish and chips we've had! We sat in and really enjoyed our meal. We added mushy peas curry sauce, slice of bread and tartar sauce. We went for the regular haddock which was more than enough.

The food was absolutely brilliant, had the steak pie, mushy peas and gravy - it was delicious. The portion sizes are very generous and the chips are perfect (and unlimited!). Favourite chippy I've had in a very long time. Nikki was fantastic - service was excellent and Nikki made it very easy to sort out our order despite a few fussy eaters - thanks so much :)

Really surprised how good a big portion of Haddock n Chips for £9.95 was. Madge, me and the missus had more than we could eat. Loved it. Got scraps added for free.

First time at Drake's, it came highly recommended and did not disappoint, awesome Haddock, chips and mushy peas, all washed down with an Aspull draught cider and for less than £21, absolute bargain!!!!!!! Thank you.

In 2 years the prices have become extortionate. Used to get a meal deal here for around £8. Small Fish, chips, peas and drink. Now the same thing costs around £6 more under years later. No more money from me

Absolutely disgraceful! I have colieac disease and have eaten at Drakes several times after being well assured the Gluten Free fish and chips were 100%. Free. On this visit, we noticed there was a “Tiny” disclaimer saying that “although we are proud to serve gluten free food some contamination may occur” I asked the lady serving about the contamination who had the most ridiculous excuse I’ve ever heard. Her exact words were “we do serve gluten free fish and chips but cross contamination can happen as the baskets used to fry the fish and chips cab get mixed up!!!!!!! So you have a separate fryer but can’t do something as simple as have different colours on the basket handles to stop this? This is outrageous and dangerous! If I was not to see this extremely tiny disclaimer I would now be in hospital. Very poorly disclaimed and to be honest I don’t think they care about the safety of their coeliac tourists as we will soon move on and go home with the consequences. DO NOT GO THERE THEY DONT CARE

Nice fish and chips but poor service but yet charged 10% service charge with consent. Visit during Sun 1.30pm but was not busy as expected, with still a lot of empty tables but was asked to seat in outside the table just beside the only busy toilet. Not a single "friendly" staff around. Quite disappointed with this kind of service.

Always good food and service. Although I think that 'offering' to add a 'service charge' to customers bills when they come to pay isn't acceptable.

The fish was prepared very quickly. For this price I expected a bit bigger fish, but it was tasty. The fries were well made, the portion of sauces was also well chosen, I think that if you are looking for something quick, it is ok. Unfortunately, a minus for the fact that there was no salt to use.

Good food, slow service, clean restaurant, casual atmosphere. The front on the restaurant is for take- out service. You have to walk throught a narrow hallway, pass the kitchen to the dinning room. The food was served hot and with good presentation. The food was made to order, so it was served very hot. The quality and taste were good, but I've had fresher fish. The service was slow and unattentive. Everyone around us received similar poor service. This establishments offers free refills on fries/chips. We didn't need them, but good luck in getting a server's attention if you did. They also add a service charge at the end. The restaurant has only one public restroom. They also have a second, cheaper price tier for take - out orders. - Tourist from the U.S.A.

Absolutely zero customer service. Waited between five ten minutes at the counter whilst the server sorted out takeaway orders… I wasn’t acknowledged at all. Not even a ‘ sorry, I’ll with you in a minute’ or anything. I wasn’t the only one to walk out either. I saw at least 3 staff members, not a single one said anything to me. If they can’t be bothered to train their staff to be polite, I’ll be happy to spend my money elsewhere. Avoid this fish and chip shop!

OMG! It's got to be the best fish and chips ever! I'll never want to eat mediocre fried fish ever again. The breading and fish were so good, and the chips were so delicious, better than normal french fries. I'd come back again 100%! Way to go Drake's.

Stumbled upon Drake’s on a day out in York, seated straight away at noon. Immediately wasn’t impressed with the seats, they were dirty from previous customers. Ordering was quick and we didn’t wait too long for the food to arrive. Fish was moist and batter was thin and crispy, portion was on the small side although you can ask for extra chips! Nothing particularly stands out about the fish and chips here, I found the chips very greasy….be aware that they automatically add on 10% gratuity which is discretionary….personally I don’t think it’s worth the 10%.

The food here is seriously good and I know my fish and chips! I took my Spanish family here who were visiting from Barcelona so hoped it would be good. We used the sit in restaurant part. The haddock fillet was excellent. Super fresh with flakes nicely separating out. The fillet was lovely and thick. Batter was light and evenly distributed over the fish. There were no slimy or greasy bits as you sometimes get. Chips were firm and crunchy with a lovely fluffy inside. We ordered a couple of mushy peas and curry to try. Peas were nice and full of flavour and just the right texture. Curry was fine but would have benefited from a little more heat. The restaurant itself is windowless and lacking in character. It’s right in the heart of old York so not a great deal they can do about it. Prices are fantastic. My Spanish family were blown away by the value of it. £70 to feed 5 with sides. There’s also a good selection of locally brewed bottled beers which I also know a lot about! Booking was easy through bookatable. Service was just OK. If anything, this is where they could improve training. Especially since it’s predominantly a tourist restaurant. Not particularly friendly or helpful but functional. Not much knowledge of the menu, where the ingredients are sourced etc. Big delays in getting and paying the bill. All easily fixed I would think.

I saw it from outside at first and thought it was just an average fish and chips shop but when I went inside, I was super impressed with the ambience and the lovely staff. A lot of friends suggested to try the deep fried Mars bar and it was worth it. They're known for their fish and chips and they made simple fish and chips look like a 7 star meal. Will definitely be coming again.

Hello, I had the "Oldie, but Goldie" menu for pensioners. Meal with a small pot of tea as a menu. The attention of the female waiter...was a matter of luck...! Later a male employee came and asked in a friendly manner whether everything was OK. I say THANK YOU! Food was great and looked like fish, whereas at many F & C, the “fish” look the same. (Frozen) (Only the artificial cannabis plastic "plant" was absolutely inappropriate there and should be replaced.) In addition to the price of the meal, there are also "voluntary"... 10% service...!

Superb fish supper - the chips were lovely and not soggy at all, and the fish was fried and crispy to perfection. Pretty good price for the city centre as well, you can get a fish supper for under a tenner if you’re having it to take away. Very tasty battered sausage supper too. The service was fast and efficient as well, which is great because it can get busy at weekends.

Had a platter of fish ,scampi ,chips and salad..( side of mushy peas) very busy but service was fast and efficient, Decor was lovely..all in all great food , lovely staff and gushing comments from fellow diners.

I liked the fried fish better than any other I have had as a tourist in the UK. But the chips were soft & soggy, apparently the way the English like it.

Family of 4 ate inside the restaurant and had fish and chips with tea. The fish and chips were really nice but spoilt by the poor condiments. I need salt and vinegar on my fish and chips and unfortunately the salt was a poor quality, so you could not taste it even after applying 3-4 times and the vinegar was so watered down/or poor quality, it was also tasteless. The tea was also not that nice. The restaurant was lovely and cool. Very clean and service was very good. The downstairs toilets need to be in use all the time, not just when it's busy or else it's a trek upstairs to use the loo. There weren't many other customers in when we ate but it was getting busy as we left (12.30 ish).

The Fish and Chips are some of the best York has to offer. The Fish is always cooked perfectly and not greasy or oily like other Fish and Chip shops and the Chips have the exact same standard. If you are visiting York and are feeling peckish, this is the place to go!

Tried a children’s fish bites & small chips. Great quality & value. The batter is crisp and the fish is very fresh. Came with a small amount of freshly cooked chips fabulous if you are hungry but only want a small portion.

We booked a table for 2 and was given the option of one downstairs or on the 1st floor. As downstairs was busy, which was to be expected at 5.30pm, we chose upstairs, which was empty and suited us. Service was attentive but no overly, so good. We ordered regular Haddock & Chips and Fish Tacos & Chips, Curry Sauce & Mushy Peas plus 2 drinks. The Fish & chips on both meals were fantastic, proper traditional style, fish was skinless and boneless, just how we like it. Chips are unlimited, so if you're hungry, you can ask for more. We would definitely go back again.

Ordered fish and chips and some extra chips. The chips were "soggy" and the fish was of poor quality, teasted like old frying oil used for cooking. Mushy peas were good. Compared to other fish and chips I have had here in the UK this year, this was by far the worst so far.

My daughter visited yesterday with her partner after a long drive you held her table & served a sumptuous meal of gluten free fish salad & onion rings.. brilliant service dog was allowed in too.. everyone was so kind 5 stars from them my father owned a fish & chip shop in London so it’s wonderful to see this tradition continues in good stead..

When going to York, this is our go to place to eat. Today, as usual, food excellent and service prompt. Staff are polite and accommodating.

Definitely if you want to try the best Fish and Chips this is the best place I have ever eaten in my entire life. Everything is delicious, the fish feels fresh, the fries and everything else has an incomparable flavor. I live in the United States, Florida and I want to return to this beautiful city and eat there again.
