Absolutely disgraceful! I have colieac disease and have eaten at Drakes several times after being well assured the Gluten Free fish and chips were 100%. Free. On this visit, we noticed there was a “Tiny” disclaimer saying that “although we are proud to serve gluten free food some contamination may occur” I asked the lady serving about the contamination who had the most ridiculous excuse I’ve ever heard. Her exact words were “we do serve gluten free fish and chips but cross contamination can happen as the baskets used to fry the fish and chips cab get mixed up!!!!!!! So you have a separate fryer but can’t do something as simple as have different colours on the basket handles to stop this? This is outrageous and dangerous! If I was not to see this extremely tiny disclaimer I would now be in hospital. Very poorly disclaimed and to be honest I don’t think they care about the safety of their coeliac tourists as we will soon move on and go home with the consequences. DO NOT GO THERE THEY DONT CARE

Been to york last three years drakes is the first place we go great fish and chips

In 2 years the prices have become extortionate. Used to get a meal deal here for around £8. Small Fish, chips, peas and drink. Now the same thing costs around £6 more under years later. No more money from me

Best fish and chips in York. Superb fresh from the frier haddock and chips with a spicy curry sauce. Just the job on a cold night. Served by very friendly staff Alex on the frier and served by Gemma. Highly recommended.

Absolutely loved this restaurant with the cosy rooms , the food was fabulous..real Yorkshire fish and chips cooked in beef dripping and home made mushy peas..we had lunch and served us for the day..lovely quirky building..servic was attentive ...full marks...see you in a couple of months.

Nice fish and chips but poor service but yet charged 10% service charge with consent. Visit during Sun 1.30pm but was not busy as expected, with still a lot of empty tables but was asked to seat in outside the table just beside the only busy toilet. Not a single "friendly" staff around. Quite disappointed with this kind of service.

Always good food and service. Although I think that 'offering' to add a 'service charge' to customers bills when they come to pay isn't acceptable.

The fish was prepared very quickly. For this price I expected a bit bigger fish, but it was tasty. The fries were well made, the portion of sauces was also well chosen, I think that if you are looking for something quick, it is ok. Unfortunately, a minus for the fact that there was no salt to use.

Dined in at this restaurant for the first time, was delightful service by Chaan, was a wonderful experience would recommend, will be back 👍

Good food, slow service, clean restaurant, casual atmosphere. The front on the restaurant is for take- out service. You have to walk throught a narrow hallway, pass the kitchen to the dinning room. The food was served hot and with good presentation. The food was made to order, so it was served very hot. The quality and taste were good, but I've had fresher fish. The service was slow and unattentive. Everyone around us received similar poor service. This establishments offers free refills on fries/chips. We didn't need them, but good luck in getting a server's attention if you did. They also add a service charge at the end. The restaurant has only one public restroom. They also have a second, cheaper price tier for take - out orders. - Tourist from the U.S.A.

I highly recommend this restaurant! The fish & chips are really excellent. The staff was kind, smiling and welcoming: the large group we were in (more than 10 people) was welcomed in the best possible way. THANKS!

Had nice chips and scampi, but I don't know why they put a small garnish on it is that a Yorkshire thing? Definitely not needed. I would visit again.

Absolutely zero customer service. Waited between five ten minutes at the counter whilst the server sorted out takeaway orders… I wasn’t acknowledged at all. Not even a ‘ sorry, I’ll with you in a minute’ or anything. I wasn’t the only one to walk out either. I saw at least 3 staff members, not a single one said anything to me. If they can’t be bothered to train their staff to be polite, I’ll be happy to spend my money elsewhere. Avoid this fish and chip shop!

Myself and my husband dined here the food is amazing and the staff are fantastic.we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and were given a free bottle of Prosecco and peroni which we weren’t expecting when in York please visit you won’t be disappointed

OMG! It's got to be the best fish and chips ever! I'll never want to eat mediocre fried fish ever again. The breading and fish were so good, and the chips were so delicious, better than normal french fries. I'd come back again 100%! Way to go Drake's.

Stumbled upon Drake’s on a day out in York, seated straight away at noon. Immediately wasn’t impressed with the seats, they were dirty from previous customers. Ordering was quick and we didn’t wait too long for the food to arrive. Fish was moist and batter was thin and crispy, portion was on the small side although you can ask for extra chips! Nothing particularly stands out about the fish and chips here, I found the chips very greasy….be aware that they automatically add on 10% gratuity which is discretionary….personally I don’t think it’s worth the 10%.

The food here is seriously good and I know my fish and chips! I took my Spanish family here who were visiting from Barcelona so hoped it would be good. We used the sit in restaurant part. The haddock fillet was excellent. Super fresh with flakes nicely separating out. The fillet was lovely and thick. Batter was light and evenly distributed over the fish. There were no slimy or greasy bits as you sometimes get. Chips were firm and crunchy with a lovely fluffy inside. We ordered a couple of mushy peas and curry to try. Peas were nice and full of flavour and just the right texture. Curry was fine but would have benefited from a little more heat. The restaurant itself is windowless and lacking in character. It’s right in the heart of old York so not a great deal they can do about it. Prices are fantastic. My Spanish family were blown away by the value of it. £70 to feed 5 with sides. There’s also a good selection of locally brewed bottled beers which I also know a lot about! Booking was easy through bookatable. Service was just OK. If anything, this is where they could improve training. Especially since it’s predominantly a tourist restaurant. Not particularly friendly or helpful but functional. Not much knowledge of the menu, where the ingredients are sourced etc. Big delays in getting and paying the bill. All easily fixed I would think.

I saw it from outside at first and thought it was just an average fish and chips shop but when I went inside, I was super impressed with the ambience and the lovely staff. A lot of friends suggested to try the deep fried Mars bar and it was worth it. They're known for their fish and chips and they made simple fish and chips look like a 7 star meal. Will definitely be coming again.

Hello, I had the "Oldie, but Goldie" menu for pensioners. Meal with a small pot of tea as a menu. The attention of the female waiter...was a matter of luck...! Later a male employee came and asked in a friendly manner whether everything was OK. I say THANK YOU! Food was great and looked like fish, whereas at many F & C, the “fish” look the same. (Frozen) (Only the artificial cannabis plastic "plant" was absolutely inappropriate there and should be replaced.) In addition to the price of the meal, there are also "voluntary"... 10% service...!

Superb fish supper - the chips were lovely and not soggy at all, and the fish was fried and crispy to perfection. Pretty good price for the city centre as well, you can get a fish supper for under a tenner if you’re having it to take away. Very tasty battered sausage supper too. The service was fast and efficient as well, which is great because it can get busy at weekends.

Had a platter of fish ,scampi ,chips and salad..( side of mushy peas) very busy but service was fast and efficient, Decor was lovely..all in all great food , lovely staff and gushing comments from fellow diners.

I liked the fried fish better than any other I have had as a tourist in the UK. But the chips were soft & soggy, apparently the way the English like it.

Family of 4 ate inside the restaurant and had fish and chips with tea. The fish and chips were really nice but spoilt by the poor condiments. I need salt and vinegar on my fish and chips and unfortunately the salt was a poor quality, so you could not taste it even after applying 3-4 times and the vinegar was so watered down/or poor quality, it was also tasteless. The tea was also not that nice. The restaurant was lovely and cool. Very clean and service was very good. The downstairs toilets need to be in use all the time, not just when it's busy or else it's a trek upstairs to use the loo. There weren't many other customers in when we ate but it was getting busy as we left (12.30 ish).

The Fish and Chips are some of the best York has to offer. The Fish is always cooked perfectly and not greasy or oily like other Fish and Chip shops and the Chips have the exact same standard. If you are visiting York and are feeling peckish, this is the place to go!

Tried a children’s fish bites & small chips. Great quality & value. The batter is crisp and the fish is very fresh. Came with a small amount of freshly cooked chips fabulous if you are hungry but only want a small portion.

We booked a table for 2 and was given the option of one downstairs or on the 1st floor. As downstairs was busy, which was to be expected at 5.30pm, we chose upstairs, which was empty and suited us. Service was attentive but no overly, so good. We ordered regular Haddock & Chips and Fish Tacos & Chips, Curry Sauce & Mushy Peas plus 2 drinks. The Fish & chips on both meals were fantastic, proper traditional style, fish was skinless and boneless, just how we like it. Chips are unlimited, so if you're hungry, you can ask for more. We would definitely go back again.

My daughter visited yesterday with her partner after a long drive you held her table & served a sumptuous meal of gluten free fish salad & onion rings.. brilliant service dog was allowed in too.. everyone was so kind 5 stars from them my father owned a fish & chip shop in London so it’s wonderful to see this tradition continues in good stead..

Ordered fish and chips and some extra chips. The chips were "soggy" and the fish was of poor quality, teasted like old frying oil used for cooking. Mushy peas were good. Compared to other fish and chips I have had here in the UK this year, this was by far the worst so far.

When going to York, this is our go to place to eat. Today, as usual, food excellent and service prompt. Staff are polite and accommodating.

Definitely if you want to try the best Fish and Chips this is the best place I have ever eaten in my entire life. Everything is delicious, the fish feels fresh, the fries and everything else has an incomparable flavor. I live in the United States, Florida and I want to return to this beautiful city and eat there again.

My friend and I were intrigued by the ‘Fish Tacos’ offering on the menu, but they ended up being a little underwhelming. Nice chip shop fish, though! There’s a restaurant at the back if you prefer to dine in.

Unfortunately batter undercooked (sloppy)as was the fish (watery) this is caused by the fryer being to hot, chips were OK.

I got the chicken bites (delish) and a very generous portion of chips. Couldn't find any fault with any of it. Highly recommended.

Popped in here as we were staying in York nearby and ordered fish and chips for 8 of us. Shop was clean and friendly. Food was really good, portions great, service quick - 8 hungry tummies filled and happy.

This place was recommended to my friends and I by the friendly doorman at The Grand. We were starving and were delighted to arrive at this lovely fish and chip place. There is a lot of seating and we were greeted by lovely friendly staff who met us choose a table of our liking. The decor is calming and it’s a clean restaurant with a family friendly ambience. The menu was rondel, lots of options. We went for the classic fish and chips option. Our drinks were great and I LOVED the bottomless chips!!! We also had onion rings, fresh and scrumptious. It was all as good as it gets! our swerved was v sweet, hence the photo!!

They used to be so good. Now every takeaway has half our family's order missing. This was our last time using them. Missing food and what we had left was cold fish sitting in oil.

First time trying York’s fish and chips and I am not disappointed. Delightful Whitby scampi and haddock and chips. Everything tasted fresh and cooked to perfection. Lots of sauces and condiments available. Sweet waitresses who were so kind and helpful. The toilets were extremely clean and had stunning decor.

Had a large lightly battered fish, chips and gravy. It was delicious! The chips are done to perfection and the fish was so good and super crispy. The gravy was full of flavour! I think they use beef dripping for cooking, honestly the best fish and chips place in York! If you eat on and get fish and chips it's unlimited chips... I got a mountain of chips on my plate when it came anyway but the option is there if you want more. They also have a jumbo sized fish and unlimited chips if you fancy. They also have a range of fish you can pick from, cods not on there but the haddock was lovely. They do have a dine in or take out option. Clean and tidy with a nice atmosphere and toilets upstairs. Staff were super friendly and couldn't do enough for you. 100% will be going again!

The fish and chips were oily and I’m seriously nauseous on my way back. I asked for a takeaway but was handed an open box of fish and chips. Very uncomfortable and unwelcoming attitude. My brother straight up left and waited outside because of this middle aged waitress who was so so unwelcoming. People will explore your menu if you just keep your attitude right. Sorry to say but that lady seems like a racist.

Went in after a few beers after work, had a discussion about scraps or batter, (obviously scraps),staff were brilliant, food was 10/10, would highly recommend top quality chippy.

This place is dog friendly and the food was quick served and hot. Will definitely be back again!

I can't give it 5 stars, although the food deserves it, but it bothers me that if you eat it on the street, the fish + fries is 9.75, the same if you sit down, it's 13.25£, plus the 10% service charge, which adds up to the costs for 4 people . 3.55 a 330 colaer is a robbery! 2.5 maximum 3£ and even then they are sold at a minimum double price.

Absolutely incredible. Firstly, I am a big fish and chips person, I've trawled the length and bredth of the UK looking for the tastiest fish and chips, I've sampled from the likes of the Cods Scallops, the Rock, loch Fyne, murgatroyds and many others. Having stayed in York, I was desperate to find somewhere that did good fish and chips. This place popped up and I thought I'd trust the reviews and well, what can I say, they were right, this place is great! Had a large haddock and chips with a side of mushy peas and curry sauce all in cost about £15 which isn't bad for the size of the portion, I shared with my partner. Everything was fresh, cooked to order the staff were lovely and well the food was superb, the fish was flaky and battered well, the chips had a lovely amount of crunch but were nice and soft in the centre. The mushy peas were perfect as was the curry sauce. Everything tasted great and it really is on par with the big boys out there in the fish and chips realm. Delicious and well worth a visit if you're after good fish and chips in York. The only downside is there is steps into the restaurant but still, I'm sure the staff would help if needed, takeaway is what we got and it was perfect.

Visiting York with family must end with good food we go try local Haddock with chips was so good as you can see on attached picture all gone 😉

Excellent fish and chip shop! I opted for the Fish Tacos with curry sauce. I must say, the curry sauce was the best I've ever had, so thick! My family members really enjoyed the large haddock with chips. I'll definitely be hitting this place up on my next visit to York!

Can't ratel this chippy highly enough. Dined inside and offered a free drink for my wife's birthday which was a nice touch from Drakes. I still prefer the takeaway fish and chips wrapped up. It just adds that extra element to the flavour when unwrapped and eaten. We did both. If you are in York it's a must place visit to enjoy excellent if not the best fish n chips.

Great food. Just one option for celiacs, although the portion/price/quality ratio of it was really good. Really poor service, not issue with the service itself, it’s just that it was massing the service per sei. The waiter just gave us the table, and then disappeared for the rest of the evening. Casually passing by once to take the order (we were asked for drinks when they didn’t even hand us a drink menu at all), once again to drop the plates and then never see them again. We had to go around the place to finally achieve to get the bill (20mins after we finished our plates), and honestly even lost track of time on when they came to take the payment. Incredibly slow and effortless service. Would come back just for take away.

Friendly staff and good food...

Stopped in for lunch. Met some locals that came into town to eat the fish and chips. We also had that and a burger and chips. Fantastic! Had a pot of tea also. Wow. Very good. We will return.

One gluten free and one normal pensioners fish and chip meals. Manageable portions, and lovely fresh fish. Thoroughly enjoyed them, and the staff were really lovely.

Visited at approx 1230 on Sunday 14th April. Asked for the biggest fish they do. I was given "The Jumbo". Absolutely perfect. It was huge. Service was great too. Thankyou so much to everyone there. I will definitely return in the near future.
