We each got the Dove's Deluxe and weren't impressed... the food tasted good, but it was a relatively small portion of basics that weren't worth $15. My friend, who doesn't eat red meat, asked if there was a chicken option to replace the sausage or bacon, but we could only get half an avocado. Maybe some of the other more niche options would have been better, but with this I was left feeling I could have made it in my own kitchen for far less.

It has been over 6 years since I last visited here so I am re-writting my review. We used to love coming here but it was just so difficult to get in because the joint is so small and it was first come first serve. Now you can reserve your seating online, it is a big plus and we will definitely come back more often. The food here has a mix of American and Mexican, lots of Tequila and Mezcal. The menu is small but this is how it should be for a small breakfast / lunch joint. Something quick and easy, quick turn over. The seats are all bar stools like an old dinner, along the edges of the restaurant and a bit by the kitchen. It is extremely uncomfortable to sit for a long time but the service is fast so there is nothing to worry about. I wouldn't come here for a date but for a good comfort food fix this is it. I strongly recommend the fried chicken, which is tenderized thigh meat marinated and drenched in buttermilk, crispy and mouthwatering, especially with the gravy and the homemade chilli hot sauce. The burnt end hash (home style potatoes) is also legit, tender meats and flavorful.

I’ve been here many times and I love the food/diner vibes. The burnt ends hash is one of my favorite things to each for brunch in Chicago, and this time got the chicken fried chicken and tried their new burger as well. The chicken was a mountain of food and was delicious. And the burger was fantastic. Light, sesame seed but was great and the sauce was amazing. Also got the Al pastor seasoned fries. Delicious, and the side of Chipotle aioli had a real nice kick. Only downside was we had to wait 1.5 hours for a table. Longest I’ve had to wait here before. Still worth it though, highly recommend.

Our friend who lives in this neighborhood recommended this restaurant and we went this weekend for brunch. There was a 20-30 minutes wait because the place is not big, but the wait is worth it! The restaurant is cozy and has many cool details. My favorite is that the music is played on a turn table. We sat in the bar, and enjoyed a house made tortilla with crispy cheese and brisket and potatoes. Both dishes were delicious! We also had good coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, and an amazing pineapple, cucumber, and basil juice. As long as you don’t mind a little wait and seating close-by to other people, you will love it because is tasty. The bartender, Al, was super nice and recommended us places to explore in Chicago. We would love to be back and highly recommend it to you! Whatever you order, please try the salsa macha! 🔥

Every time we are in Chicago we make a trip on the Blue line to eat at Dove's. Soooo gooood!! The cocktails are delicious (hello gin pineapple agua fresca!), the meals all have a creative twist, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I recommend the burnt ends brisket dish, the fried chicken and peas, or the Ceasar salad with a sunny side up egg. The portions are big and we rarely finish our meals...leftovers!!! Woohoo! They always spin good tunes and have a fantastic selection of tequila and mezcal. It can be quite busy but the turnover of tables usually isn't too bad. Plus it's super convenient right off the Blue line. Can't recommend Dove's Luncheonette enough!!

A retro diner with Mexican fusion dishes. The fried chicken and potato hashes are done quite well here. The portions are also generous and dishes are reasonably priced. The Burnt Ends Hash is the most popular dish here but I preferred the Chicken Fried Chicken - it was nice and crispy. The hash didn’t end up having as much brisket as I had hoped. Seating is communal and mainly consists of bar and window seating. You can expect to be sitting beside strangers. Interior is unique with retro features and they play music with vinyl records which is cute. The staff are friendly and are knowledgeable about the menu. They seem to be friends with the locals that come here.

Felt very unhappy with my experience hearing the server talk about me for not tipping him for a service that might have been tipped had I not heard him immediately turn to a coworker and belittle me so openly. Enjoyed food here before but it was very rude to me that good experience and food should be conditional on the reservation that a customer can’t just pay for the food. You’ll get your tips from other people, it’s not the end of the world. Really ruined my time there. Forgiving the price point and all for a very limited menu.

Oh how I love Dove's. My friend and I visited Chicago in July 2024, and we were staying in Wicker Park just around the corner from the Damen stop. Dove's looked cool so we went in, and we were both thrilled with the results. It was breakfast time, and we sat at the bar and looked over the menu while the bartender, who we soon learned was a Kraftwerk-loving fellow named Courtland, gave us some suggestions. We ordered, and chatted with him while we waited. Courtland and I talked about cumbia, and mezcal, and Chicago. We realized that he and my friend had grown up in the same neighborhood. In summary, Courtland is rad. The food came, and it was fantastic. I had Dove's Deluxe, complete with salsa matcha and a little hot sauce. My buddy had Brisket Hash. We both had perfect cups of house coffee. We finished our breakfast, said our goodbye's and went about our business. Later that day I said "Can we go back to Dove's for drinks now?" My buddy obliged, and we ventured forth. We jumped head-first into "Dove's After Dark," drank cocktails, shot mezcal, and made new friends. Dove's is A+++ Highly recommended

The brisket hash was good. But, it came with mostly potatoes. I wish they either gave more brisket or added some other kind of vegetable. It was a large portion of potatoes. And the egg on top should have been cooked longer The friend chicken was good. Nice and crispy. The fries were good. Not too crispy, not too soggy. The drinks were bad. We got the horchata latte. Which tasted like watered down coffee and cinnamon. Did not taste like horchata. And we got the blueberry tea, which tasted like watered down tea. Not even a hint of blueberry.

Dove’s brings a unique, lively Tex Mex flair to traditional diner food and vibes, and the service is excellent. The dishes are fresh, flavorful, and come out fast. It’s kind of pricey, but the portions are large and filling and my group of 4 had some leftovers afterwards. Make a reservation if you can— seating is limited and it gets quite busy for brunch especially on weekends. Food I tried: - Taco Norteno (4.2/5): The brisket in the taco was delicious, flavorful, and well-seasoned, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the tortilla which felt too thick and dough-y for me. - Tlayuda (4.3/5): I enjoyed the crispiness of the tortilla and the freshness of the ingredients, though it could have used a bit more vibrant flavors. It was simultaneously light and filling. - Brisket Hash (4.4/5): Great flavors all around. The potatoes were crispy and well-sauced and the brisket was meaty and umami. - Masa Pancakes (4/5): Probably my least favorite out of everything we ordered, but I’m also just not the biggest fan of pancakes. The flavors here were just okay. — Price (relative to peers): 4.2/5 Food: 4.2/5 Ambience: 4.8/5 Service: 4.8/5 Overall Value: 4.4/5

Dove’s is a fantastic spot whether you’re popping in for brunch or dinner. The inside brings you back to that old school diner vibe but it’s a significant upgrade when it comes to the food. If you like Mezcal, they also have a wide range of mezcal offerings straight up or in their cocktails. I think there needs to be a conversation about their OK Style Smash burger being one of the best in Chicago with a perfectly soft bun, great sauce, and a nice crispy lace on the patty. If you’re there for dinner you can’t skip it, and throw in some of their Al pastor fries. I’d also recommend the chicken fried chicken and their deviled eggs. For Brunch I don’t think you can go wrong with anything. Great service every time from their staff!

I would compare my experience here similar to eating on a Spirit airliner. No elbow or leg room while also being price gouged. It's fairly cramped. The restaurant is not very big and the the amount of seats relative to it's size is kinda absurd. It's also fairly pricey, and the portions are fairly small. I had the "Dove's Deluxe" which comes with 2 eggs, 1 link of sausage, 1 piece of toast, and approximately a half a potato. I also had a regular coffee. The food was "meh", nothing that blew me away or would justify the price. Total with tip came out to $24 and some change. I feel 3 stars is too generous and 2 Stars is too harsh. So 2½

Almost all counter seating in this cute diner, definitely better for smaller groups. HIGHLY recommend the broccoli caeser salad, it was my favorite thing we ordered. The potatoes that came with both the brisket and the basic breakfast have a delicious aioli vibe that made them the highlight of both dishes. Bread was also outstanding. We've been here a few times now on different trips to Chicago, and I'm not sure we'll go back. The seating is so uncomfortable and we always have to sit at the long table shared with other guests which is fine, if it was comfortable. But it's not. The seats are stools there and hard and short, and we're always right next to the area where the servers stand and sitting close to strangers. And it's so small and loud, I noticed several wearing ear buds which was a good idea. But we went with our friends and just had a hard time having a conversation, music was loud and everyone has to practically scream to talk. The food is ok, we got the dove special breakfast, the sausage and bacon were both really good, the toast was burnt, the hash browns were ok, service was ok. Overall, just not the breakfast experience we're looking for.

Edit: 5th time here, it's good again! Edit: 4th time here, this was previously my #1 spot to eat in Chicago but there has been a noticable decline in quality. The sunny side eggs were overcooked and the meat tasted like it had gone bad - how do you serve overcooked sunny side eggs at a diner charging what Dove's charges?... The service was also rushed and cold. I left feeling overall very diasapointed with our $50 meal. I had to check my previous pictures to make sure I wasnt imagining things - even the pictures of the food look like a poor imitation of what I had been served on previous occasions. Seriously, take a look at customer pictures of the dishes from the last couple months, vs earlier in the year. The food quality has taken a nose-dive. Hopefully they can bring the quality back but I will not be recommending this place anymore.

I walked in here without any expectations, as it just happened to be the nearest breakfast spot at the exact moment I searched for a place. HOLY HELL. This is such an incredible little spot. It definitely has a latino theme in the cuisine— my partner ordered a taco situation for breakfast that was absolutely SLAMMIN. I ordered the patty melt which usually comes on sourdough, but they were out of sourdough so they put it on rye and hot damn. I found myself gasping and clutching my chest between bites and I AM NOT A DRAMATIC PERSON. The fresh squeezed orange juice was divine. The service was fast. The ambiance was quintessential diner. 1000% will come again and will be adding this to the list of places I must bring guests when they visit Chicago.

Food is normally pretty great, but Doves are clearly making a conscious decision to rip-off their customers. Prices have risen, but it’s their decision to configure their handheld payment terminals to calculate the tip amounts based on your subtotal + taxes, and now they have started to add an opt-out 3% hospitality fee. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes…. First of all, the portions of the dishes are very Texan. However, the burnt ends hash was way too fatty, it was like every piece of burnt ends hash was just a big piece of fat, not brisket. @lydieats 💕 You will find Dove’s on every Chicago breakfast list ✍️ It’s your usual neighborhood diner but with a Mexican & Southern twist. They have the old school, vintage-y vibes and friendly staff, making it a great spot to start your weekend. Space is limited, mostly counter seating with one communal table so prepare to wait in line! My pick is the chicken fried chicken. Buttermilk fried & covered in chorizo verde gravy. Appreciate the crunch - fried rly well and the chicken is juicy 😋 Gravy is pretty rich so the sweet peas and pearl onions help cut through it all. Dove’s deluxe is your classic option. Solid execution but nothing too special. If I lived in Wicker Park, I would go more often but it’s not worth a commute AND a thirty minute wait imo.

When we first arrived, the staff was attentive and we were seated immediately - lucky us! It took us awhile to select what we wanted - the prices aren’t cheap so we wanted to choose wisely. We ended up getting Burnt Ends Hash, the deviled eggs and Pozole Rojo. Deviled eggs are okay - not worth $4 for one egg in my opinion but we were glad to try it. The Burnt Ends Hash was excellent - great portion and seasoning. We got the pozole rojo as it stated online it is one of their more popular dishes. We felt it lacked seasoning, the chicken was flavorless and chewy, and the tostada was rock hard. We didn’t eat it and they did take it off of our bill thankfully. Not sure if our feedback was well received - it took awhile to get our waiter’s attention - so long that we had finished one of our meals before they came to check on us. And when we gave our feedback, our waiter seemed very annoyed with us. We’ve never sent food back at a restaurant before and felt very awkward about it. But we cannot justify eating such a tasteless dish at an $18 price point and at a restaurant with such positive reviews overall. We wouldn’t go again unfortunately but to each their own.

There are many great breakfast places fishing up the standards- Dove’s chose to blaze its own path with a menu that is wholly original and deeply, deliriously delicious. The Tlayuda was a giant tostada slathered in bean paste with grilled squash and cheese and arugula and scrambled eggs on top. Also recommend the Burnt Ends Brisket Hash and the Taco Noteno. We couldn’t let it go at just one dish so we split the apple butter French toast. All this serves with smiles and alacrity in a milieu straight out of the best 70s nostalgia. Unmissable.

I was given Doves location as a recommendation from another local business to go eat for lunch. When I arrived the place was fully pack with no seating area available. I still decided to stay and consider trying the food there. I was greeted by a waitress who decided to show me the menu. I became disappointed when I was not offered a seat or even asked would be dining in or take out. I got the impression since I was African American that they did not want me to stay or eat inside the restaurant but automatically presumed that I would have my food to go. I asked the waitress, "Do you think I would like to eat outside in the cold?". She then went on to servicing other customers who were not black and asked them would they like seats inside the restaurant.

The food and drink was excellent. Our server recommended chicken friend chicken and that was right on the money. Some tequila and house made sangria were fantastic. Really friendly service and good energy.

Dove’s Luncheonette was my first stop on a brief stay in Chicago. Excellent neighborhood vibe, great service, eclectic music mix courtesy of a regularly rotated record player, and plenty of counter seating for this party of one. Everything was right in the world as I sipped coffee waiting on the arrival of a smoked brisket taco. It landed with a thud, unfortunately. Flavors were good, but tough as shoe leather. A fall-apart tender cut like brisket needs long cook time at low temps to bring out the best of it. They missed the mark on this. Food coming out looked good, so hope to get a chance to try something else next time I’m in the area. TL;DR…Skip the brisket

A creative menu, great service, and incredible mezcal selection. I had masa pancakes with mole maple syrup for breakfast and they were amazing!!

Great place for breakfast/lunch in Wicker Park. Food is amazing and service is great. There is a bit of a wait to get seated especially on a weekend.

I ordered the “Smash Burger” and it was good. Don’t get me wrong. However, it is $16! It does not come with any sides at all. No fries. No side salad. Nothing. Not worth the price in the slightest. We sat at the bar and the bartender was not pleasant. He diss not greet us or say “you’re welcome” after I said “Thank you” for taking my plate away. My friend tried to make conversation and ask about the menu and he was very dismissive. He had no opinion as to what was the most ordered dish on the menu. He just repeated “They all are ordered regularly”. Would I recommend this place? If you want mediocre service and overly priced food, then sure. For anything else, no. Absolutely not.

Visiting Chicago; friend recommended this place. This is probably my favorite spot I’ve been to in town. Atmosphere was great—comfy diner vibe with a jukebox, b&w photos and old posters on the wall; my placemat had a picture of agaves being processed. I loved it. I had the Taco Norteño and it was incredible with the salsa macha that was already on the table. Thank you Maxwell for the great conversation and great service! I came for breakfast so I didn’t order spirits or cocktails but next time I visit Chicago, I will definitely come back here! Can’t recommend enough!

Dove's has been on my Chicago list for at least 10 years; I finally went for lunch and my only regret was not going sooner. The food was incredible. It was crowded at lunch, and the service was a bit slow as a result, but I would go back for every meal if I could.
